REHABILITATION to any practical extent is impossible for a patient with a spinal-cord or cauda-equina injury unless he can be certain that he can have infallible control of his bowel under ordinary circumstances and that, as a result, he need not fear soiling himself unexpectedly.This desirable condition depends upon the establishment of a conditioned reflex as the result of which the large bowel empties itself only at certain prearranged times.It is necessary to know the normal physiologic anatomy of the bowel as well as the mechanism of normal defecation to understand how such a reflex can be effectively . . .

Radiological Differentiation Between Pericardial Effusion and Cardiac Dilatation

In spite of our growing knowledge of the morbid anatomy and pathological physiology of the pericardium, the diagnosis of pericardial effusion has remained the perplexing problem that it has always been. The multitude of clinical and roentgenologic signs suggested by various observers emphasizes the difficulty of differentiation without offering a reliable solution of the problem. In our experience two stages of pericardial effusion are not readily diagnosed: the early fluid accumulation, which does not as yet display the classical symptoms, and the extreme filling of the pericardial sac, which must be differentiated from the heart enlargement due to rheumatic involvement, thyrotoxicosis, myxedema, and the various types of myocardial damage. In reference to the early roentgenologic recognition of pericardial effusion, certain statements are generally accepted: (1) that smaller amounts of fluid, up to 250 or 300 c.c., are usually not detectable fluoroscopically or on films; (2) that with the means available...

ANATOMY OF THE REFLEXES One of the important events of the year for clinical neurologists is the publication of Fulton's Physiology of the Nervous System.1The book is more accurately described as a physiologic anatomy of the central nervous system, for several aspects of neurophysiology have been slighted or omitted but the coordinated exposition of anatomy and function is extraordinarily well done and is just the sort of information that the student of neurology needs before he undertakes clinical problems. Chapter XV is written largely by Lorente de No and is especially significant because it brings together for the first time a group of observations that have changed the trend of neurologic thought in recent years. THE INTERVERTEBRAL DISK

The past five years has seen a greater increase in knowledge of the pathologic changes of the spine than that of the half century preceding. This is due to Professor Schmorl of the Dresden Pathologic Institute, who, in his researches up to now, did not achieve his object of demonstrating the cause of scoliosis but who indicated the anatomy, physiology and pathologic anatomy of that hitherto neglected organ the intervertebral disk. Schmorl removes the spine at every autopsy and during the past five years has studied more than 5,000 spines. His investigations and observations are those of the pathologist. A considerable literature has already sprung up in Germany as a result of Schmorl's work, while in this country it has received practically no attention. The Association for the Study of the Internal Secretions has been organized and its journal, Endocrinology, is being published in the interests both of the advance of science and of better medical practice. Our objects include not only the further development of a pure science of endocrinology, but also the evolution of an applied science of endocrinology and the improvement of the medical art as far as it is exercised in endocrine domains. The membership of our Association includes therefore not only investigators and teachers in the pre-clinical medical sciences of anatomy, histology, embryology, physiology, physiological chemistry, pharmacology and experimental pathology, but also many representatives of the clinical sciences of diagnosis and therapy and of the closely allied sciences of pathological anatomy and pathological physiology. Anatomy of the Human Body.

In the review of so well known a book, nothing more is necessary than to record the changes that have been made. In this edition the special sections on embryology and histology have been distributed among the subjects under which they naturally belong. New matter on physiologic anatomy, laws of bone architecture, and the mechanics and variations of muscles has been added, occupying much of the space formerly devoted to applied anatomy. The sections on ductless glands and the nervous system have been largely rewritten. By means of diagrams and descriptions, the sympathetic nervous system is presented in a more rational manner than heretofore. The central connections of the spinal and cranial nerves are also emphasized. Many new illustrations have been added, especially in the section on the central nervous system.

The Anatomy of Woody Plants

BOTANISTS for several years past have felt the heed of a comprehensive text-book on the anatomy of plants worthy to take the place of de Bary's classic book published in 1877. As Prof. Jeffrey says: “In de Bary's text-book both palaeobotany and development are deliberately eschewed.” The omission of any account of the anatomy of extinct plants would in these days foe a much greater defect than it was forty years ago, and whether one agrees or disagrees with the conclusions stated by the author, he cannot be accused of undervaluing the importance of palaeobotanical data. The study of the develop ment of organs is deliberately omitted on the ground that it throws little light on the processes of evolution. The researches of Schwendener gave a stimulus to the study of anatomy from a physiological point of view, and the last edition of Haberlandt's “Physiological Plant Anatomy” admirably represents the present state of our knowledge in this branch of botany. It is surprising that Prof. Jeffrey makes no reference to Haberlandt's work. The Anatomy of Woody Plants. By E. C. Jeffrey. Pp. x + 478.
