In 1887 J. H. van't Hoff, Svante A. Arrhenius, and Wilhelm Ostwald (whom Bernard Jaffe has called three musketeers who fought for ions) played central roles in establishing physical chemistry as a separate discipline. In October and December of that year, classic papers on osmotic pressure by van't Hoff and on electrolytic dissociation by Arrhenius appeared in Ostwald's newly founded Zeitschrift fUr physikalische Chemie . Each paper complemented the other, and together they ushered in a period of experimental and theoretical activity that explained a wide and varied range of observations on solutions from a powerful, unified point of view.
