The Effect of Problem-Based Learning Model Assisted by PhET Simulations on Students’ Physics Problem-Solving Abilities

This study aims to examine the effect of problem-based learning model assisted by PhET simulations on students' physics problem solving ability. This research is Quasi Experimental with non-equivalent control group design. The population of this study were all students of class XI IPA SMAN 4 Mataram with sampling technique using purposive sampling technique, because there were four classes XI IPA, so it was determined that class XI IPA 1 as the experimental class and class XI IPA 2 as the control class. Based on the results of the study, the average value of physics problem solving ability of students in the experimental class was 45.09, while the average value of problem-solving ability of the control class was 39.61. Data Problem solving ability of both classes are normally distributed. Based on the results of the data homogeneity test, the problem-solving ability data are both homogeneous. Problem solving ability data was analyzed using the polled variance t-test and obtained a t_count of 2.24. The t-table value for problem solving ability data is 2.00 at a significant level of 5%. The value of t_count is greater than t_table, meaning that there is an effect of problem-based learning model assisted by PhET simulations on physics problem solving ability of students.

Effect of Problem-Based Learning Model on Students' Physics Problem Solving Ability: A Meta-Analysis

In the 21st century, the improvement of science and technology leads humans to master various skills, one of which is problem solving. Physics learning can be one of the means in improving students' problem-solving ability (PSA). The purposes of this research are determine the effect of PBL model on students' physics PSA, determine the effect of PBL model on students' physics PSA based on subject matter, and determine the effect of PBL model on students' physics PSA based on teaching materials. This research is a meta-analysis by analysing 17 articles from national journals indexed at least Sinta 4 and international journals or proceedings. The results showed that there is an effect of PBL model on the ability to solve physics problems of students as a whole equal to 1.985 with a very high category. Based on the subject matter, the most effective effect of PBL on PSA is on temperature and heat material which is 4.135 with a very high category. In the material of effort and energy, the influence of PBL on PSA is the lowest compared to other materials with an effect size value of 0.365. While based on teaching materials, the effect of PBL on physics PSA is low with an effect size of 0.315. Digital teaching materials are the best teaching materials applied in PBL learning to improve students' physics PSA

Influence of Inquiry Learning on Concept Mastery Ability and Physics Problem Solving Ability of Students on Work and Energy Material

The aim of the study was to determine differences in students' concept mastery abilities and students' problem solving abilities in the material of effort and energy using inquiry learning with students who learned using conventional learning as well as the correlation between concept mastery abilities and students' energy and effort problem solving abilities. This research is a quantitative research with a Quasi Experiment research design and the research design is a nonequivalent control group design. This study involved an experimental class that used the Inquiry learning model with learning stages according to the Inquiry learning model syntax and a control class that used conventional learning with learning stages according to the learning model used by the teacher when teaching. Taking the research sample using random sampling technique. The data collection instrument used tests with physics concept mastery skill instruments in the form of 10 multiple choice questions and 5 physics problem solving questions in the form of description questions. The test data were obtained through the pretest and posttest which were then subjected to prerequisite tests. The prerequisite test results stated that the data were normally distributed, homogeneous, and the test was linear. The data that has passed the prerequisite test is then used to test the hypothesis using Ancova. The results of the data analysis test showed that there were significant differences in students' concept mastery and problem-solving abilities between classes using Inquiry learning and classes using conventional learning. In addition, the results of the research data analysis show that there is a correlation between the ability to master the concept and the ability to solve problems, which means there is a relationship between the ability to master the concept and the ability to solve problems. The conclusion of the research shows that inquiry learning on work and energy materials can improve students' concept mastery and problem-solving abilities

Assessing Students’ Critical Thinking and Physics Problem-Solving Skills in Secondary Schools

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are some of the most crucial elements of 21st Century Skills. Very few studies have been conducted to specifically assess critical thinking and physics problem-solving skills among secondary school students. Therefore, a survey research was conducted on 66 Form Four science stream students from secondary schools in the Federal Territory of Labuan, Malaysia. Critical Thinking Assessment and Physics Problem Solving Ability Test instruments were used to measure critical thinking and problem-solving skill in Physics respectively. Overall, the level of critical thinking and physics problem-solving skills were moderate. The finding also indicated that there was a significant difference in critical thinking and Physics problem-solving skill based on achievement of the students. Meanwhile, the relationship between critical thinking and problem-solving skill in Physics was found to be positive and strongly significant. The findings from this study implied that more actions need to be taken to improve students' critical thinking and problem-solving skill in Physics.

Exploration of Physics Problem-Solving Ability in Physics Education College Student: The Concept of Buoyancy

This study explored the ability of college students to solve problems involving buoyant force materials. The method used was descriptive qualitative, with the research subjects of Physics Education college students at Halu Oleo University who have programmed the Basic Physics I course. The instrument used was a description of five questions and interview guidelines to explore quantitative findings. The results of the analysis showed that the overall problem-solving ability of college students was still relatively low, with an average score of 40.6. The low problem-solving ability of college students on the concept of buoyancy in expressing the ratio of the lifting force of objects in different fluids determined the lifting force of an object by applying an equation and selecting the buoyancy experienced by an object in a liquid. The difficulties experienced by a college student generally in understanding problems had an impact on completion due to a lack of mastery of concepts. Thus, they could impact appropriately.

Pengaruh Model Pembelajaran Berbasis Masalah Terhadap Kemampuan Pemecahan Masalah Fisika Peserta Didik Pada Materi Usaha dan Energi

This study aims to examine the effect of the problem-based learning model on students’ physics problem-solving abilities on work and energy materials. The type of research used a quasi-experimental research design with a nonequivalent control group design. The population of this study was students of class X SMA Negeri 1 Empang for the 2021/2022 Academic Year. The research sample was taken using the cluster random sampling technique so that 27 students of class X IPA 2 were selected as the experimental class and 26 students of class X IPA 4 were selected as the control class. The experimental class was given treatment in the form of learning using a problem-based learning model, while the control class used a conventional model. The instrument used to measure the problem-solving ability of students was a description test which is first tested for the validity, reliability, different capability, and difficulty of question level. The result obtained in the form of the average value of KPM obtained by the two classes in the pre-test was the experimental class of 15,48 and the control class of 13,38 and the average value of KPM obtained by the two classes in the post-test was the experimental class of 88,81 and the control class of 80,73. The result of the data analysis test showed that the pre-test and post-test data were homogeneous and the post-test data were normally distributed and the hypothesis test they were analyzed using the t-test in order to obtain the value of 3,15. The value at a significant level of 5% is 2,007, then the value is bigger then. Thus, it is concluded that there is a positive effect of the problem-based learning model on students' physics problem-solving ability in the matter of work and energy.

THE MEASURING INSTRUMENT OF PRIMITIVE PHYSICS PROBLEM FOR UPPER-SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS: COMPILATION AND EXPLORATION

Problem solving is considered one of the most critical competencies for life. However, many students may perform well in school yet cannot transfer the skills they learned in school to solve real-world problems, especially in science education. This study discusses the characteristics of the problem from the physics education perspective, based on Problem Representation Theory, and proposes a new type of problem: The Primitive Physics Problem. Moreover, the significance and contribution in promoting students' physics problem-solving ability, both theoretical and empirical, are described. Then the study develops a set of instruments that was tested on 811 students in 12th grade from 10 upper-secondary schools in China. The results showed that the new instrument had good reliability and validity. The promising application in the instruction of the Primitive Physics Problem and in measuring upper-secondary school students' problem-solving ability of the instrument is discussed. The correlation between physics problem-solving skill and metacognitive ability from collaboration of socratic dialogue-modeling instruction implementation

Metacognitive ability linked to the problem-solving skill lies in the control of cognitive processes as a guide in problems solving. Problem-solving skill should be trained as a scaffolding for students. Scaffolding can be done through Socratic dialogue. Implementation of Socratic dialogue will be more effective when combined with modelling instruction. Therefore, the research had been conducted to determine the influence of Socratic dialogue in modelling instruction on physics problem-solving skill in terms of students’ metacognitive ability. This research is a quasi-experiment posttest only group design with a 2x2 factorial design. The results showed that: (1) the physics problem-solving ability of students learned by modelling instruction+socratic dialogue are higher than conventional learning, (2) there is an interaction between modelling instruction+socratic dialogue with the metacognitive ability to physics problem-solving skill, (3) the physics problem-solving skill of students with high metacognitive ability learned by modelling instruction+socratic dialogue are higher than conventional learning, (4) the physics problem-solving skill of students with low metacognitive ability learned by modelling instruction+socratic dialogue are lower than conventional learning.

Improving Senior High School Students’ Physics Problem-solving Skills Through Investigated Based Multiple Representation (IBMR) Learning Model

This research aims to improve senior high school students’ physics problem-solving skills through learning used IBMR learning model. This research was a pre-an experimental study with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The Methods of data collection used validation and test. The materials used to teach were valid category by two experts and can be used to practice physics problem-solving skills. The average post-test score physics problem-solving ability was 73.24 with an N-gain of 0.59 was classified as moderate. The success of IBMR learning model-based devices in practicing problem-solving abilities can be seen in the increase in the average score in each indicator of problem-solving abilities. The indicator of understanding the problem had the highest post-test average score of 94.58 with an N-gain of 0.89 in the high category. The problem-solving indicator had the lowest posttest average score was 58.22 with N-gain 0.39 and mean that it was the moderate category. Based on the results study, it can be concluded that the learning used by IBMR learning model can practice the ability to solve physics problems on heat material and its displacement. Students' Metacognitive Awareness and Physics Problem Solving ability and Correlation between Them

This study investigates the correlation between metacognitive awareness and students’ problem-solving ability level in direct current electricity concepts. This study is conducted in 2019 in one of the Senior High Schools in South Tangerang. There are 126 students of 12th grade majoring in Science (XII MIA) as the sample. A proportionate stratified random sampling technique chooses the sample. It is the choosing sample technique used randomly and proportionally that focused on the population's level. The method of the study is correlational. The study instruments are 45 Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) statements and seven essay questions of problem-solving ability test. The result of the Person Product Moment correlation and the significant test shows that metacognitive awareness has a positive and significant correlation with students’ problem-solving ability to direct current electricity concepts. Moreover, it is known that students’ metacognitive awareness and problem-solving ability are at a medium level.

Description of Physics Problem-solving in the Topic of Static Fluid: Case Study of Physics Education in Halu Oleo University

Good physics teaching in secondary schools and colleges emphasize problem-solving. Although students are effective in conventional tests of problem-solving, there is evidence that they have little or no comprehension of basic concepts. There are two (2) reasons that justify the claim that solving plays a broad role in the physics curriculum at most levels of education, namely problem solving can facilitate students learning physics and physics can assist students in developing the skills needed to solve problems in the real world. This study aims to provide a description of the physics problem-solving ability of Halu Oleo university physics education students on static fluid material. This type of research is a quantitative descriptive study with research subjects in 4 classes of physics education students at Halu Oleo University. The research instrument and data collection made in the form of problem-solving essay test questions given to 120 students from 4 classes. The material of the investigation took one of the topics, namely static fluid. The problem-solving assessment consists of a useful description, physics approach, specific application of physics, mathematical procedures, logical progression adopted from the research of Docktor et al. 2016. The results of the analysis found that in the four classes that were tested on conceptual problem-solving tests, the average of all students were in the useful description category. In other words, students could only translate and organize information from problems into appropriate and useful representations, and summarize the essence of the information provided symbolically, visually and in writing. As for the category of physics approach, specific application of physics, mathematical procedures, logical progression that are in the low category are still weak.

The Effectiveness of Creative-Inquiry-Based Student Worksheet in Improving Physics Self-Efficacy and Problem Solving of Senior High School Students

The objective of this research is to describe the use of creative-inquiry-based student worksheets in improving physics self-efficacy and problem solving of senior high school students. This was quasi-experiment research with pretest and posttest control group design. Samples were taken using the purposive sampling technique. They were the twelfth-grade students of Public Senior High School 7 in Bandar Lampung and Public Senior High School 1 in North Sungkai. Samples were divided into two groups; the experimental group taught by using a creative-inquiry-based student worksheet and control group taught by using student worksheet sold freely in the market. Instruments used were self-efficacy sheets and problems to test physics problem-solving ability. The data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis with percentage technique, N-gain, and independent t-test. The result showed that a creative-inquiry-based student worksheet is effective to be used to improve self-efficacy and ability of physics problem-solving. Good self-efficacy will have implications for the level of physics problem-solving ability in solving physics problems.

Identification of Students’ Metacognitive Levels in Physics Learning Viewed from the Problem-Solving Ability

This study aimed to look at the level of physics problem-solving ability achieved by students and identify the level of metacognition based on the ability to solve physics problems at each level. The research method used was a mixed method with a sequential explanatory strategy. The populations in this study were all eleventh-grade science students of Kebumen Islamic High School, Tanggamus District. The sampling technique used was a balanced sample with a participant selection model. The instruments used in this study were the physics tests, interviews, and documentation. The data analysis process included two stages of analysis, namely quantitative data analysis and qualitative data analysis. The results of this study indicated that 12.12% of students belong to the high problem-solving group, 66.67% of students belong to the moderate problem-solving group, and 21.21% of students belong to the low problem-solving group. The high problem-solving group had a high level of metacognition, namely Semi-reflective use with a percentage of 10% and Strategic use with a percentage of 10%. The moderate problem-solving group had Semi-strategic use level with a percentage of 40% and Aware use with a percentage of 20%. The low problem-solving group had the lowest metacognition level, namely Tacit use with a percentage of 20% of the total sample taken. so, the levels of metacognition ability of students in learning physics identified in this study were: tacit use, aware use, semi strategic use, strategic use, and semi-reflective use.

Influence of physics problem-solving ability through the project based learning towards vocational high school students’ learning outcomes

Physics, an adaptive subject in SMK, is the basis and prerequisite for productive and applicable material, so it needs to be emphasized on problem solving approaches. This study aimed to determine the influence of learning methods based on the problem solving ability on learning outcomes. The intended learning outcomes are cognitive learning outcomes and the learning method used is project based learning. The type of research was quasi-experiment. The population in this study were the 10th grade students of SMK Negeri 5 Surakarta in the 2018/2019 academic year which consisted of 7 majors with 22 classes. The sample of this study were 2 classes from the Mechanical Engineering department, each of which amounted to 35 students. The instrument used in this study consist of 20 multiple choice questions and 5 essay question of the Physics problem solving abilities. Data were analysed using normality test, homogeneity test and hypothesis testing with analysis of variance techniques (ANOVA). Based on the results of the study it was found that the influence of the interaction between learning method and problem solving ability on cognitive learning outcomes showed sig 0.043 ≤ 0.05. It can thus be concluded that there was an influence of the interaction of the learning model with the problem solving ability with cognitive learning outcomes. Therefore project based learning methods can be used as an alternative for teachers in carrying out their learning to create an active learning atmosphere and enhance students’ ability to understand physics problems.

The Profile of Students’ Physics Problem Solving Ability in Optical Instruments

This research aims to analyze the profile of students’ problem-solving ability in problems of optical instruments. This survey research involved 65 students class XI of MAN 3 Yogyakarta. The research instrument was in the form of 3 problem-solving questions in the form of a description. The results showed the percentage of students in the expert category was still relatively low at 30,7% and the students in the novice category were quite high at 69,3% so that students’ overall physics problem-solving abilities were relatively low. In this research, some student difficulties were still found, one of which was in determining the focus of the right lens for patients with eye disorders to use glasses and determine magnification when using a magnifying glass. Efforts to implement innovative learning are needed to improve problem-solving abilities in overcoming students’ physics problems.

The Effect of Web-Assisted Problem Based Learning Model Towards Physics Problem Solving Ability of Class X Students

This research aimed to determine the effect of web-assisted PBL model towards problem solving ability of class X students. This research was an experiment research or experiment study on two sample groups namely the experiment group and the control group. The research design was True Experimental with the Post-Test-Only Control Design form. This experiment research was conducted in class X MIA of SMAN 2 Yogyakarta. The samples used in this study were 30 students of class X MIA 8 as the experiment group and 30 students of class X MIA 9 as the control group. Based on the results of the Independent Sample T-Test, the two sample groups seen from Sig. (2-tailed) were worth 0.000 < 0.05, so H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. The results of the effect test were calculated using Cohen’d Effect Size to determine the magnitude of the problem solving ability effect between the experiment class and the control class. The study was concluded that the web-assisted problem based learning model had a huge effect on the problem solving ability of class X students.

Literature Study on The Influence of Mathematics Basic Skills to Work Out Physics Problems

This research aims to describe the correlation of mathematics skills as the basic skills that students need in order to solve physics problems that seem complicated and difficult to understand. Physics describes the order of nature in mathematical equations thus the ultimate goal of physics in finding other sequences and making use of it in real life can be achieved more easily. This research was conducted using literature study approach. The data were collected by means of documentation with secondary data obtained from several references. The data were then analyzed using content analysis technique. A relevant summary of the correlation between proper mathematical understanding and complex physics problem-solving ability was attained from this research. These results were confirmed by the data gained from a range of references in the form of books, both online and offline journals as well as prior conferences that have been read, reviewed and analyzed by focusing on the mastery of mathematics skills in developing students' critical thinking to work out physics problems.

The Roles of Parents in Their Children’s Physics Problem-Solving Ability

Problem solving is an important aspect in learning Physics. Looking at the internal and external assessments, it shows that our students are still facing difficulty regarding this aspect. Therefore, several studies focusing on cognitive factors such as improving teaching methods have been done. However, it is found that motivation is a vital factor and one of the methods to motivate students is by parents providing social support to their children. Thus, this study will explore on this variable in regards to the learning of problem-solving skills in Physics. The samples involved are parents who have children studying in boarding schools. This study used semi-structured interviews and the interview was transcribed and analyzed by using thematic analysis method. After the analysis, the results showed that there are a number of social support aspects which are emotional support, educational support, relationship support and learning material support. Therefore, it can be said that, in order to positively influence children’s motivation to solve Physics problems, parent’s support plays an important role.

The Effect of Problem Based Learning (PBL) Model and Self Regulated Learning (SRL) toward Physics Problem Solving Ability (PSA) of Students at Senior High School

This study aimed to analyze whether student’s Problem Solving Ability that learned using Problem Based Learning Model better than conventional learning, to analyze whether student’s Problem Solving Ability who have above average of Self Regulated Learning better then students who have below the average Self Regulated Learning, and to analyze interaction between Problem Based Learning and conventional learning using Self Regulated Learning in improving students' Problem Solving Ability. This research is a quasi-experimental design with two group pretest posttest design. The study population were all students of class XI SMAN 13 Medan academic year 2015/2016 and the sample was grade XI IPA 3 and 5 selected by simple random sampling. The data were analyzed by two ways ANOVA. The results showed that: (1) student’s Problem Solving Ability that learned using Problem Based Learning Model was better than the conventional learning, (2) Problem Solving Ability groups of students who have above average Self Regulated Learning is better than the students who have below average Self Regulated Learning, and (3) there was an interaction between Problem Based Learning Model and conventional learning using Self Regulated Learning in influencing students' Problem Solving Ability.
