Heat-Induced Changes in the Physical Properties of a New Premixed Calcium Silicate-Containing Root Canal Sealer: An In Vitro Study.

This study aimed to examine how heating affects the physical properties of a newly developed premixed calcium silicate-containing sealer (AH Plus Bioceramic Sealer; AHB), in comparison with EndoSequence BC Sealer (ES), AH Plus Jet (AH), and Pulp Canal Sealer. The setting time, flow, and film thickness were tested with or without heating at 100 °C for 30 or 60 s, in accordance with ISO6876:2012 standards. Ultrastructural and elemental analyses were performed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a Tukey post hoc test (α = 0.05). All sealers exhibited significantly shorter setting time and flow after heating at 100 °C for 30 and 60 s (p < 0.05). After heating, AHB showed a significantly higher film thickness compared to that of the other materials (p < 0.05). None of the tested properties of heat-applied AHB and ES met ISO standards, except the setting time in ES. The SEM/EDS results for AHB and ES were not affected by heating. The detected changes in physical properties can negatively impact the performance of premixed calcium silicate-containing sealers, particularly AHB, when warm vertical compaction is employed.

Ecological condition of marine waters in the area of dredging operations of the kashagan field, Kazakhstan

To determine the hydrophysical and hydrochemical parameters of sea water and their changes during dredging works in the north‐eastern part of the Caspian Sea along the Western Approach Route and near/inside block D, islands EPC‐2, EPC‐3, EPC‐4 and island A of the Kashagan field.Measurement of hydrophysical parameters: salinity, temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen concentration, electrical conductivity, pH of seawater was carried out using a portable multi‐parameter analyser "Horiba‐U53" directly in the water column. Water transparency was determined using a Secchi disc. The depth of the water layer was determined using a sounder. Hydrochemical investigations were carried out for seven parameters, with all components sampled in the near‐surface and benthic horizons. Water samples were taken using probes or bathometers: BM‐48, GR‐18 or their analogues.Hydrochemical analyses of seawater samples for: biogens (NO2, NO3, NH4, Ntotal, and Ptotal), synthetic surfactants, phenols, hydrocarbons including polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHS), heavy metals, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5). These were carried out in laboratory conditions using analytical equipment according to scientifically accepted methods.The data obtained as a result of the research allow us to draw the following conclusion: changes in the amount of suspended sediment in sea water lead to changes in physical and chemical properties of water (increase in turbidity, disturbance of sediment composition and properties), changes in biotopes, deterioration of oxygen regime, optical properties of water and temperature regime.

Soft Materials with Time-Programmed Changes in Physical Properties through Lyotropic Phase Transitions Induced by pH-Changing Reactions.

We present the development of time-programmable functional soft materials. The materials undergo reversible phase transitions between lyotropic phases with different topologies and symmetries, which in turn have very different physical properties: viscosity, diffusion, and optical transparency. Here, this behavior is achieved by combining pH-responsive lyotropic phases made from the lipid monoolein doped with 10% oleic acid, with chemical reactions that have well-defined controllable kinetics: autocatalytic urea-urease and methyl formate hydrolysis, which increase and decrease pH, respectively. In this case, we use small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and optical imaging to show temporally controlled transitions between the cloudy hexagonal phase, which is a two-dimensional (2D) array of cylindrical inverse micelles, and the transparent, highly viscous three-dimensional (3D) bicontinuous cubic phases. By combining these into a single reaction mixture where the pH increases and then decreases again, we can induce a sequential transformation cycle from hexagonal to cubic and back to hexagonal over several hours. The sample therefore changes from cloudy to transparent and back again as a proof-of-concept demonstration for a wider range of soft materials with time-programmable changes in physical properties.

Optimized register level transfer mechanism for ASIC-based memscomputing

Micro-electromechanical system-based semiconductor sensor systems typically need a reliable on-chip analog readout circuit to identify and process changes in physical properties. To improve the mobility, robustness, reliability and performance (in terms of power consumption and speed) of the sensor system, the remaining parts of the post-processing logic, such as the digital data processor (or part of it), can also integrated into the chip. Cost and integration are always important considerations in both analog and digital designs, but they become even more important; the subsystem of data processing must be squeezed into a very small space near the structure of the micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) sensor. The paper introduces a new Buffalo-based register-transfer level (BRTL) method that aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of the system of digital data processing for MEMS sensor post-processing algorithm. Initially, the memcomputing system was designed with the needed functional processing elements. Then, a novel Buffalo-based register-transfer level design is modelled in the MEMS architecture. The digital data transmission process is performed to estimate the reliability of the proposed BRTL model. Finally, the performance of the proposed model can be validated.

Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) Investigation for Landslides: Case Study in the Hunan Province, China

Electrical resistivity tomography is a non-destructive and efficient geophysical exploration method that can effectively reveal the geological structure and sliding surface characteristics inside landslide bodies. This is crucial for analyzing the stability of landslides and managing associated risks. This study focuses on the Lijiazu landslide in Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province, employing the electrical resistivity tomography method to detect effectively the surrounding area of the landslide. The resistivity data of the deep strata were obtained, and the corresponding geophysical characteristics are inverted. At the same time, combined with the existing drilling data, the electrical structure of the landslide body is discussed in detail. The inversion results reveal significant vertical variations in the landslide body’s resistivity, reflecting changes in rock and soil physical properties. Combined with geological data analysis, it can be concluded that the sliding surface is located in the sandy shale formation. Meanwhile, by integrating various geological data, we can conclude that the landslide is currently in a creeping stage. During the rainy season, with rainfall infiltration, the landslide will further develop, posing a risk of instability. It should be promptly addressed through appropriate remediation measures. Finally, based on the results of two-dimensional inversion, this article constructs a three-dimensional surface morphology of the landslide body, which can more intuitively compare and observe the internal structure and material composition of the landslide body. This also serves as a foundation for the subsequent management and stability assessment of landslides, while also paving the way for exploring new perspectives on the formation mechanisms and theories of landslides.

Time-dependent model for two-phase flow in ultra-high water-cut reservoirs: Time-varying permeability and relative permeability

For the ultra-high water-cut reservoirs, after long-term water injection exploitation, the physical properties of the reservoir change and the heterogeneity of the reservoir becomes increasingly severe, which further aggravates the spatial difference of the flow field. In this study, the displacement experiments were employed to investigate the variations in core permeability, porosity, and relative permeability after a large amount of water injection. A relative permeability endpoint model was proposed by utilizing the alternating conditional expectation (ACE) transformation to describe the variation in relative permeability based on the experimental data. Based on the time dependent models for permeability and relative permeability, the traditional oil-water two-phase model was improved and discretized using the mimetic finite difference method (MFD). The two cases were launched to confirm the validation of the proposed model. The impact of time-varying physical features on reservoir production performance was studied in a real water flooding reservoir. The experimental results indicate that the overall relative permeability curve shifts to the right as water injection increases. This shift corresponds to a transition towards a more hydrophilic wettability and a decrease in residual oil saturation. The endpoint model demonstrates excellent accuracy and can be applied to time-varying simulations of reservoir physics. The impact of variations in permeability and relative permeability on the reservoir production performance yields two distinct outcomes. The time-varying permeability of the reservoir results in intensified water channeling and poor development effects. On the other hand, the time-varying relative permeability enhances the oil phase seepage capacity, facilitating oil displacement. The comprehensive time-varying behavior is the result of the combined influence of these two parameters, which closely resemble the actual conditions observed in oil field exploitation. The time-varying simulation technique of reservoir physical properties proposed in this paper can continuously and stably characterize the dynamic changes of reservoir physical properties during water drive development. This approach ensures the reliability of the simulation results regarding residual oil distribution.

Theoretical Understanding of Effects of Operating Modes on the Performance Durability of Solid Oxide Cells: A Comparison between Potentiostatic and Galvanostatic Operations

In solid oxide cells (SOCs), the choice between galvanostatic (constant current) and potentiostatic (constant voltage) modes does not significantly affect the performance of SOCs as long as the cell components remain unchanged and intact. However, the degradation of cell components, which leads to changes in electrochemical and physical properties of the cell, elevates the importance of the selected operating mode. This paper aims to investigate the effects of galvanostatic and potentiostatic operating modes on the evolving properties of SOCs and their subsequent influence on performance durability. Employing non-equilibrium thermodynamic analysis, a crucial approach for understanding the degradation phenomena within an active electrochemical system, this study aims to provide in-depth insights into how these operating modes affect the longevity and efficacy of SOCs. Key findings include: In cases where oxygen electrode (OE) degradation is accelerated by higher partial pressure of oxygen ( pO2 ), operating under constant voltage electrolysis can mitigate the high pO2 at the OE|electrolyte (OE|EL) interface. Conversely, if OE degradation occurs more rapidly under a lower pO2, constant current electrolysis is more effective in suppressing degradation by achieving a high pO2 at the OE|EL interface. For degradation of the fuel electrode (FE) due to higher pO2, constant current electrolysis is beneficial for more stable performance, which helps maintain low pO2 at the FE|EL interface. When FE degradation is accelerated by lower pO2, constant voltage electrolysis can avert low pO2 at the FE|EL interface. In practical scenarios, more complex degradation mechanisms come into play, especially when pO2 significantly deviates from initial conditions. Degradation in one electrode can influence pO2 in the other electrode, a phenomenon more pronounced in potentiostatic than in galvanostatic electrolysis.

Dynamics of soil penetration resistance, moisture depletion pattern and crop productivity determined by mechanized cultivation and lifesaving irrigation in zero till blackgram

Rice fallow black gram is grown under the residual moisture situation as a relay crop in heavy texture montmorillonite clay soil under zero till condition. Since the crop is raised during post monsoon season, the crop often experiences terminal stress due to limited water availability and no rainfall. Surface irrigation in montmorillonite clay soil is determent to pulse crop as inundation causes wilting. Therefore, zero tilled rice fallow black gram has to be supplemented with micro irrigation at flowering stage (35 days after sowing) to alleviate moisture stress and to increase the productivity as well. Hence micro farm pond in a corner of one ha field was created to harvest the rain water during monsoon season and the same was utilized to supplement the crop with lifesaving irrigation through mobile sprinkler at flowering stage for the crop grown under conservation agriculture. Soil cracking is also the common phenomena of montmorillonite clay soil where evaporations losses would be more through crack surfaces. The present study was therefore conducted to study the changes in the soil physical properties, crop establishment and productivity in conjunction with mechanized sowing and harvest and supplemental mobile sprinkler irrigation. Sowing of black gram by broadcasting 10 days prior to the manual harvest of rice, manual drawn single row seed drill after the machine harvest of rice and sowing by broadcasting at 4 days prior to machine harvest of rice was experimented separately and in combination with lifesaving irrigation. Results indicated that the number of wheel passes and lifesaving irrigation had a very strong impact on soil penetration resistance and soil moisture. Combined harvester followed by no till seed drill increased the soil penetration resistance in all the layers (0–5 cm, 5–10 cm and 10–15 cm). Two passes of wheel increased the mean soil penetration resistance from 407 KPa to 502 KPa. The soil penetration resistance (0–5 cm) at harvest shown that black gram sown by manual broadcasting 10 days prior to manual harvest of paddy supplemented with life irrigation on 30 DAS reduced the soil penetration resistance from 690 Kpa to 500 Kpa, 740 Kpa to 600 Kpa and 760 Kpa to 620 Kpa respectively at 0–5 cm, 5–10 cm and 10–15 cm layer. In general, moisture depletion rate was rapid in the surface layer of 0–5 cm as compared to other layers of 5–10 cm and 10–15 cm up to 30 DAS (Flowering stage). The moisture content and the soil penetration resistance had an inverse relationship. The soil penetration resistance also had an inverse relationship with the root length in which the root length lowers as the soil penetration resistance increases. The soil crack measured at 60 DAS was deeper with no till seed drill (width of 3.94 cm and depth of 13.67 cm) which was mainly due to surface layer compaction. The relative water content, specific leaf weight and chlorophyll content were significantly improved through the supplemental irrigation given on 30 DAS irrespective of crop establishment methods. The results further indicated that compaction of ploughed layer in the moist soil due to combined harvester and no till seed drill had a negative impact on yield (457 kg ha−1), which was improved by 19.03 per cent due to increased soil moisture with supplemental irrigation. The mean yield increase across different treatments due to supplemental lifesaving irrigation through mobile sprinkler was 20.4 per cent.

Can saturated paste be used to predict bulk density in annual cropping systems in California?

AbstractSoil bulk density (BD) is important for measuring changes in soil chemical, physical, and biological properties; however, the measurement is tedious to collect and requires specialized equipment. Database measurements for soil surface BD do not always correspond to present field conditions as field management can alter BD in time. Saturation percentage (SP) is a routine lab measurement. The objectives of this study are to (1) understand if a relationship between BD and SP can be developed and (2) build a model that predicts BD based on a routine low‐cost lab analysis. We collected 83 soil samples from different experimental sites around California's Central Valley. At each site, BD, SP, soil organic matter (OM), and soil total organic carbon were measured. A set of models were generated and compared based on their Akaike information criterion (AIC) and adjusted R2. The best two models are presented in this paper, and their accuracy and precision in estimating BD were further compared by calculating the root mean square error (RMSE) and the R2 of the predicted versus values measured in the field. We determined that a strong relationship between BD and SP exists (R2 = 0.70) and that a cubic model that includes SP and OM resulted in the best model to predict BD in California soils. Inclusion of additional data may further strengthen this model or make it applicable for other grower regions.

Quantitative analysis of mRNA-lipid nanoparticle stability in human plasma and serum by size-exclusion chromatography coupled with dual-angle light scattering

Understanding the stability of mRNA loaded lipid nanoparticles (mRNA-LNPs) is imperative for their clinical development. Herein, we propose the use of size-exclusion chromatography coupled with dual-angle light scattering (SEC-MALS) as a new approach to assessing mRNA-LNP stability in pure human serum and plasma. By applying a dual-column configuration to attenuate interference from plasma components, SEC-MALS was able to elucidate the degradation kinetics and physical property changes of mRNA-LNPs, which have not been observed accurately by conventional dynamic light scattering techniques. Interestingly, both serum and plasma had significantly different impacts on the molecular weight and radius of gyration of mRNA-LNPs, suggesting the involvement of clotting factors in desorption of lipids from mRNA-LNPs. We also discovered that a trace impurity (~1 %) in ALC-0315, identified as its O-tert-butyloxycarbonyl-protected form, greatly diminished mRNA-LNP stability in serum. These results demonstrated the potential utility of SEC-MALS for optimization and quality control of LNP formulations.

Effects of UV/H2O2 degradation on Moringa oleifera Lam. leaves polysaccharides: Composition, in vitro fermentation and prebiotic properties on gut microorganisms

Moringa oleifera Lam. leaves are a new raw food material rich in polysaccharides. These polysaccharides exhibit various biological properties, including antioxidant, hypoglycemic and immunoregulatory effects. However, the use of Moringa oleifera Lam. leaves polysaccharides (MOLP) may be limited by their large molecular weight (MW) and presence of numerous impurities, such as pigments. Research has indicated that degraded polysaccharides usually exhibit high biological activity because of changes in physical structure and chemical properties. In this study, we focused on the extraction of a degraded-modified fraction from MOLP using the Ultraviolet/ Hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) method. Specifically, the physicochemical properties and glycosidic bond composition of a particular fraction (UV/H2O2 degraded Moringa oleifera Lam. leaves polysaccharides in 3 h called DMOLP-3) were investigated. In addition, in vitro simulated digestion experiments showed that DMOLP-3 was only partially degraded during gastrointestinal digestion, indicating that DMOLP-3 can be utilised by gut microorganisms. Furthermore, the prebiotic properties of MOLP and DMOLP-3 was studied using an in vitro faecal fermentation model. The results indicated that compared with MOLP, DMOLP-3 led to a decrease in both the colour and MW of the polysaccharides. In addition, this model exhibited enhanced solubility and antioxidant capabilities while also influencing the surface morphology. Moreover, DMOLP-3 can facilitate the proliferation of advantageous microorganisms and enhance the synthesis of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These results provide valuable insights into the utilization of bioactive components in Moringa oleifera Lam. leaves for the intestinal health.

System and multi-physics coupling model of liquid-CO2 injection on CO2 storage with enhanced gas recovery (CSEGR) framework

Injecting CO2 into gas reservoirs can achieve CO2 Storage with enhanced gas recovery (CSEGR). The development of liquid-CO2 injection has the characteristics of high injectability, high mobility ratio, and low diffusion coefficient. Therefore, this paper established a wellbore-reservoir-thermo-hydro-mechanical-diffusion (WR-THMD) multi-physics fully coupled model of the wellbore-reservoir system, and verified the model based on field and experimental data. The mass transfer, heat transfer, and gas physical property changes in the wellbore and reservoir during the injection of liquid-CO2 were studied. The impact of different engineering parameters on improving CH4 recovery and CO2 storage is also discussed. The results show that the impact of the wellbore on the physical properties and phase state of CO2 is crucial. The injection of liquid-CO2 is beneficial to the storage of CO2 and the displacement of CH4. Lowering the injection temperature will slightly improve the injectability of liquid-CO2 and increase the CO2 storage rate by 5.13%. Using a high injection mass flow rate will effectively raise CH4 recovery rate by 15.60%, but it will weaken the injectability of CO2 and cause CO2 to break through in the production well prematurely. The research results provide important suggestions and theoretical support for the application of liquid-CO2 injection on CSEGR.

Changes in Physical Properties and Microstructure of Bamboo–Plastic Composites with Different Bamboo Powder/Polybutylene Succinate Ratios, Polypropylene, and Polyethylene

As the most promising biomass material, bamboo has been widely used, but at the same time, it is subject to many problems, such as processing residues and the failure of high-value utilization of residues. In this paper, bamboo powder and polybutylene succinate (PBS) were used as the main raw materials, and by changing the ratio of bamboo powder to PBS and adding polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE) in combination with PBS, the effects of the ratio, as well as the effects of the use of PP and PE, on the physical–mechanical, thermal, and degradation properties of bamboo–plastic composites were investigated, and the microscopic changes of the materials were studied by chemical component analysis. The optimal formulation of bamboo powder/PBS composite material has been identified through experimentation, yielding a flexural strength of 24.87 MPa and a compressive strength of 29.74 MPa. This material can be used for outdoor furniture, wall panels, flooring, road barriers, and other applications, providing a new environmentally friendly approach to the consumption of residual bamboo materials.

Response of maize yield to changes in soil organic matter in a Swedish long‐term experiment

AbstractAgricultural practices that lead to soil carbon sequestration may be a win–win strategy for mitigating global warming and improving soil fertility and resource use efficiency. The mechanisms through which soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration affects crop yields are numerous but difficult to separate. The objective of this study was to disentangle these processes and estimate to what extent the yield response to SOC is mainly driven by changes in physical or biochemical properties and processes. This was achieved by analysing the response of yields in continuous maize to SOC concentrations during 20 years (2000–2019), which had evolved in 14 experimental treatments in a Swedish long‐term field experiment at Ultuna since 1956, ranging from 0.94% to 3.65% in the topsoil (0–20 cm). Average maize yields during this period varied between 1.9 and 8.4 Mg dry mass per hectare in the different treatments. The treatments comprise applications of different mineral nitrogen (N) fertilizers and organic amendments and combinations thereof. Our analysis showed that maize yield in the treatments that were not severely limited by nitrogen supply or soil acidity increased by 16% for each percentage unit increase in SOC. We applied the widely used concept of critical N concentration in plant biomass to diagnose the N status in maize in the different treatments (N nutrition index [NNI]) and parameterized a response function between yield and pH (RpH). Dry soil bulk density (BD) was used as a proxy for soil physical properties. These three variables NNI, RpH and BD explained 95% of the variation in maize yields among treatments. Further analysis of the relationship between BD, SOC and plant available water capacity revealed that about two thirds of the yield increases in response to SOC change could be ascribed to associated changes in soil physical properties. Our analysis suggests that the extra storage capacity of water, which increased by up to 15 mm in the topsoil for each unit percentage increase in SOC, was the main driver for the observed yield responses. We conclude that measures for increasing SOC in soils most likely are an effective adaptation strategy for reducing the risk of crop damage during dry spells, which probably are becoming more frequent in the future due to climate change, even in relatively humid climates as in Sweden.

Study on the Physical Properties of Hydrogen-Doped Natural Gas Based on Equation of State

As a zero-emission green clean energy, hydrogen energy is an important means to achieve the strategic goal of carbon neutrality and an important part of the energy Internet. Hydrogen-doped natural gas transportation is an economical and feasible scheme to realize long-distance transportation of hydrogen by using the existing natural gas pipeline network. However, the addition of hydrogen to natural gas will cause obvious changes in the physical properties of the transport medium, which will have a certain impact on the transport characteristics and flow measurement of the pipeline. The main problem is that we need to understand the changes of physical properties after natural gas mixed with hydrogen to ensure the safe operation of natural gas pipe network mixed with hydrogen. Based on this situation, this paper takes BWRS equation as the theoretical basis, selects typical natural gas temperament, calculates and solves the physical parameters of natural gas under different hydrogen blending ratios, and compares them with the standard physical reference values. After verification, the results are used to explore the physical properties of hydrogen-doped natural gas with hydrogen blending ratio, temperature and pressure as variables. The relative average absolute value error (RAAD) of the calculated physical properties of hydrogen-doped natural gas in this paper is less than 2% compared with the reference value of standard physical properties, which can provide theoretical data basis for studying hydrogen-doped pipeline transportation, ensuring pipeline transportation safety and hydrogen-doped natural gas metering.

Formation mechanism of a disaster chain in Loess Plateau: A case study of the Pucheng County disaster chain on August 10, 2023, in Shaanxi Province, China

Under the heavy rainfall risk due to global warming, a new trend has emerged in geological disasters of loess, which have often evolved into a chain form of disaster chain of loess (DCL) in recent years. The DCL is characterized by multiple, hidden, catastrophic, and complex characteristics that seriously affect the construction and operation of large-scale infrastructure on the Loess Plateau. To understand the formation mechanism of a disaster chain of loess, we took the Shiyangpo DCL, a typical disaster chain occurring recently on the Loess Plateau, as an example to investigate the geomorphic features and deformation characteristics of DCL using new technologies and methods such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) mapping and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) spatial analysis technology. A series of special laboratory tests considering the vibration of the loess subgrade was conducted to explore the changes in physical and mechanical properties of loess samples in the study area under natural, saturated, and vibration conditions. Additionally, the trigger factors and evolution process of this DCL were analyzed, and the formation mechanism of recently emerging typical DCL was revealed as well. The triggering factors of the disaster were summarized as follows: loess nature, heavy rainfall, irrigation, irrational excavation, incomplete drainage channels, and long-term vehicle vibration of roadbeds. Furthermore, extreme rainfall was identified as the primary inducing factor of Shiyangpo DCL. Finally, the development and evolution of Shiyangpo DCL were divided into five stages: the formation of the loess sinkhole stage, the occurrence of the loess subsidence stage, the occurrence of the loess collapse stage, the occurrence of the loess landslide stage, and the formation of river-blocking and dammed lake stage. This study reveals the cause and evolution process of the newly emerged DCL in the Loess Plateau, and the new techniques and methods involved can provide references for the theoretical research and prevention of loess geological disasters in other places.

Low-Loading Mixed Matrix Materials: Fractal-Like Structure and Peculiarly Enhanced Gas Permeability.

Mixed matrix materials (MMMs) containing metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles are attractive for membrane carbon capture. Particularly, adding <5 mass % MOFs in polymers dramatically increased gas permeability, far surpassing the Maxwell model's prediction. However, no sound mechanisms have been offered to explain this unusual low-loading phenomenon. Herein, we design an ideal series of MMMs containing polyethers (one of the leading polymers for CO2/N2 separation) and discrete metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) with cage sizes of 2-5 nm. Adding 3 mass % MOP-3 in a polyether increases the CO2 permeability by 100% from 510 to 1000 Barrer at 35 °C because of the increased gas diffusivity. No discernible changes in typical physical properties governing gas transport properties are detected, such as glass transition temperature, fractional free volume, d-spacing, etc. We hypothesize that this behavior is attributed to fractal-like networks formed by highly porous MOPs, and for the first time, we validate this hypothesis using small-angle X-ray scattering analysis.

Water activity and glass transition effect on the physical properties and bioactive compounds of persimmon peel powder

SummaryPersimmon peel is an agro‐industrial by‐product that could be valorised as a potential powdered functional ingredient. However, powdered products exhibit quality and stability problems associated with the water activity and the glass transition. In this work, hot‐air drying was used to produce a persimmon peel powder, which was conditioned at 20 °C at different relative humidity (11.3%–75.5%). The changes in physical properties (water sorption, glass transition, mechanical properties), structure (light microscopy) and bioactive compounds (soluble tannin content, total carotenoid content) were evaluated. By combining the GAB sorption model and the Gordon and Taylor equation, the critical values of water activity (aw = 0.211) and water content (0.029 g water g−1 product), related to the glass transition, were obtained. These values were critical for the production of a free‐flowing powder rich in bioactive compounds and high antioxidant capacity.

Effects of herbivory, fire, and vegetation type on soil compaction and aggregate stability in a semi-arid savanna

AbstractVegetation type is an important component of savannas contributing to changes in soil health. In savanna landscapes, the tree-grass balance is primarily governed by water, nutrients, fire, herbivory, and their interactions. Here we investigated the long-term effect of herbivores, fire, and vegetation type, and their interactions on selected physical properties (bulk density, penetration resistance, aggregate size fractions, and mean weight diameter (MWD)) of water stable aggregates within the crest and foot-slope of 20-year-old Nkuhlu exclosures located in Kruger National Park, South Africa. Burning, herbivory, and open grassland zones had a significant main and interactive ecological impact on all the soil physical properties under investigation. The interactions between fire, herbivores, and vegetation type within the crest and foot-slope of the Nkuhlu exclosure had a significant impact on soil bulk density, with areas under tree canopies having lower bulk density than open grassland zones in all the exclosures. In all the sampling sites, both burnt and unburnt plots of the full exclosure had lower penetration resistance than the control site and partial exclosure. Moreover, unburnt plots and canopy cover increased aggregate size distribution and mean weight diameter of water stable aggregates. Since fire and herbivory are closely linked and bring about changes in soil physical properties, the understanding of the dynamics of fire, herbivory, vegetation, and their interactions can then be used to help make effective management decisions that incorporate concerns of biodiversity in savanna ecosystems.
