Some Physical Properties of Dimethyl Sulfoxide-Water Binary System

We have yet very little information as to some physical properties of dimethyl sulfoxide-water binary system. The purpose of this paper was to determine the physical properties of this system, such as refractive index, density, viscosity, surface tension, coefficient of expansion, specific heat, heat of mixing, solid-liquid equilibrium, vapor-liquid equilibrium, and the relation between diameter of bubble and diameter of drop. Dimethyl sulfoxide has an excellent affinity to water. The interaction between dimethyl sulf oxide and water was investigated by McAllisters' two body model, which has been derived to study the viscosity of binary mixtures.

Abstract In the preceding article, Bary has shown a curve of the changes with time in rubber solutions of various concentrations, the interesting feature of which is the angular break which separates the curve into two sections. In a discussion of this paper, attention was called by de Meeus to the fact that it would be interesting to study the physical properties of rubber solutions as a function of the concentration without the complicating effect of aging. This brings up the question whether this curve would also have a similar break. Though data are not available on rubber solutions, it is considered that this is rendered probable by the following facts. Rubber solutions are true solutions or pseudo-solutions at great dilutions, while they become plastic at high concentrations. Experiments with certain plastic systems have shown a phenomenon which is characterized by the accompanying curve. A study of the physical properties of systems formed of various pigmente in suspension in unoxidizable oils, as a function of the concentration, showed that, in general, the properties change uniformly and continuously with increase in concentration of the pigment until a point is suddenly reached where a very pronounced break in the curve occurs.

Les relations fonctionnelles entre l'energie libre et les quantites qui determinent l'etat d'un systeme sont determinees par le milieu, et varient avec celui-ci. Un changement du milieu cause un changement du minimum de l'energie libre et une variation correspondante dans l'equilibre du systeme. Cependant, tant que l'energie libre n'a qu'un minimum, le systeme est toujours dans le meme etat pour un milieu donne, et une variation donnee du milieu cause toujours meme “reaction” dans le systeme. On ammonium and the solubility of metals without chemical action

The idea of charge frustration is applied to describe the properties of such diverse physical systems as oil-water-surfactant mixtures and metal-ammonia solutions. The minimalist charge-frustrated model possesses one energy scale and two length scales. For oil-water-surfactant mixtures, these parameters have been determined starting from the microscopic properties of the physical systems under study. Thus, microscopic properties are successfully related to the observed mesoscopic structure.
