MOSEL survey: Unwrapping the Epoch of Reionization through mimic galaxies at Cosmic Noon

Abstract The nature of the first galaxies that reionized the universe during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) remains unclear. Attempts to directly determine spectral properties of these early galaxies are affected by both limited photometric constraints across the spectrum and by the opacity of the intergalactic medium (IGM) to the Lyman Continuum (LyC) at high redshift. We approach this by analysing properties of analogous extreme emission line galaxies (EELGs, [OIII]+Hbeta EW> 400) at 2.5 < z < 4 from the ZFOURGE survey using the Multi-wavelength Analysis of Galaxy Physical Properties (MAGPHYS) SED fitting code. We compare these to galaxies at z > 5.5 observed with the James Webb Space Telesope (JWST) with self-consistent spectral energy distribution fitting methodology. This work focuses on the comparison of their UV slopes (βP), ionizing photon production efficiencies ξion, star formation rates and dust properties to determine the effectiveness of this analogue selection technique. We report the median ionizing photon production efficiencies as for our ZFOURGE control, ZFOURGE EELG, JADES and CEERS samples respectively. ZFOURGE EELGs are 0.57 dex lower in stellar mass and have half the dust extinction, compared to their ZFOURGE control counterparts. They also have a similar specific star formation rates and βP to the z > 5.5 samples. We find that EELGs at low redshift (2.5 < z < 4) are analogous to EoR galaxies in their dust attenuation and specific star formation rates. Their extensive photometric coverage and the accessibility of their LyC region opens pathways to infer stellar population properties in the EoR.

Cosmic Sands. II. Challenges in Predicting and Measuring High-z Dust Temperatures

In the current era of high-z galaxy discovery with JWST and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, our ability to study the stellar populations and interstellar medium conditions in a diverse range of galaxies at Cosmic Dawn has rapidly improved. At the same time, the need to understand the current limitations in modeling galaxy formation processes and physical properties in order to interpret these observations is critical. Here, we study the challenges in modeling galaxy dust temperatures, both in the context of forward modeling galaxy spectral properties from a hydrodynamical simulation and via backwards modeling galaxy physical properties from mock observations of far-infrared dust emission. Using the simba model for galaxy formation combined with powderday radiative transfer, we can accurately predict the evolution of dust at high redshift, though several aspects of the model are essentially free parameters (dust composition, subresolution dust in star-forming regions) that dull the predictive power of the model dust temperature distributions. We also highlight the uncertainties in the backwards modeling methods, where we find the commonly used models and assumptions to fit far-infrared spectral energy distributions and infer dust temperatures (e.g., single temperature, optically thin modified blackbody) largely fail to capture the complexity of high-z dusty galaxies. We caution that conclusions inferred from both simulations—limited by resolution and post-processing techniques—and observations—limited by sparse data and simplistic model parameterizations—are susceptible to unique and nuanced uncertainties that can limit the usefulness of current high-z dust measurements.

Attenuation proxy hidden in surface brightness – colour diagrams

Aims. Large future sky surveys, such as the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), will provide optical photometry for billions of objects. Reliable estimation of the physical properties of galaxies requires information about dust attenuation, which is usually derived from ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) data. This paper aims to construct a proxy for the far-UV (FUV) attenuation (AFUVp) from the optical data alone, enabling the rapid estimation of the star formation rate (SFR) for galaxies that lack UV or IR data. This will accelerate and improve the estimation of key physical properties of billions of LSST–like observed galaxies (observed in the optical bands only). Methods. To mimic LSST observations, we used the deep panchromatic optical coverage of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Photometric Catalogue, Data Release 12, complemented by the estimated physical properties for the SDSS galaxies from the GALEX-SDSS-WISE Legacy Catalog (GSWLC) and inclination information obtained from the SDSS Data Release 7. We restricted our sample to the 0.025–0.1 spectroscopic redshift range and investigated relations among surface brightness, colours, and dust attenuation in the FUV range for star-forming galaxies obtained from the spectral energy distribution (SED). Results. Dust attenuation is best correlated with colour measured between u and r bands (u − r) and the surface brightness in the u band (μu). We provide a dust attenuation proxy for galaxies on the star-forming main sequence. This relation can be used for the LSST or any other type of broadband optical survey. The mean ratio between the catalogue values of SFRs and those estimated using optical-only SDSS data with the AFUVp prior calculated as ΔSFR = log(SFRthis work/SFRGSWLC) is found to be less than 0.1 dex, while runs without priors result in an SFR overestimation larger than 0.3 dex. The presence or absence of the AFUVp has a negligible influence on the stellar mass (Mstar) estimation (with ΔMstar in the range from 0 to −0.15 dex). Conclusions. We note that AFUVp is reliable for low-redshift main sequence galaxies. Forthcoming deep optical observations of the LSST Deep Drilling Fields, which also have multi-wavelength data, will enable one to calibrate the obtained relation for higher redshift galaxies and, possibly, extend the study towards other types of galaxies, such as early-type galaxies off the main sequence.

Quantitatively rating galaxy simulations against real observations with anomaly detection

ABSTRACT Cosmological galaxy formation simulations are powerful tools to understand the complex processes that govern the formation and evolution of galaxies. However, evaluating the realism of these simulations remains a challenge. The two common approaches for evaluating galaxy simulations is either through scaling relations based on a few key physical galaxy properties, or through a set of pre-defined morphological parameters based on galaxy images. This paper proposes a novel image-based method for evaluating the quality of galaxy simulations using unsupervised deep learning anomaly detection techniques. By comparing full galaxy images, our approach can identify and quantify discrepancies between simulated and observed galaxies. As a demonstration, we apply this method to SDSS imaging and NIHAO simulations with different physics models, parameters, and resolution. We further compare the metric of our method to scaling relations as well as morphological parameters. We show that anomaly detection is able to capture similarities and differences between real and simulated objects that scaling relations and morphological parameters are unable to cover, thus indeed providing a new point of view to validate and calibrate cosmological simulations against observed data.

Beyond mirkwood: Enhancing SED Modeling with Conformal Predictions

Traditional spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting techniques face uncertainties due to assumptions in star formation histories and dust attenuation curves. We propose an advanced machine learning-based approach that enhances flexibility and uncertainty quantification in SED fitting. Unlike the fixed NGBoost model used in mirkwood, our approach allows for any scikit-learn-compatible model, including deterministic models. We incorporate conformalized quantile regression to convert point predictions into error bars, enhancing interpretability and reliability. Using CatBoost as the base predictor, we compare results with and without conformal prediction, demonstrating improved performance using metrics such as coverage and interval width. Our method offers a more versatile and accurate tool for deriving galaxy physical properties from observational data.

Modeling the spectral energy distribution of starburst galaxies

Context. Analyzing multiwavelength observations of galaxies from the far-ultraviolet to the millimeter domains provides a wealth of information on the physical properties of galaxies and their evolution across cosmic time. Existing or upcoming ground-based or space-borne facilities with enhanced sensitivities and resolutions open an unprecedented window on the galaxy evolution in the early Universe. However, the derivation of galaxy properties from nebular emission lines is not trivial because the interstellar medium in a galaxy may be patchy, and emission might originate both from starburst emission regions and from partially covered photon-dominated regions. Aims. We model both the nebular continuum emission and the line emission of the spectral energy distribution for galaxies exhibiting both a HII region-like emission and emission like that from a photon-dominated regions to account for the partial shielding of the starburst emission region by dense clouds. Methods. Nebular galactic emission was modeled from far-ultraviolet to millimeter ranges in a two-sector model with an HII region and a photon-dominated region. The partial overlap of the HII region by the photon-dominated region was accounted for by a covering factor. We generated grids of emission spectra using the Cloudy photoionization code for our two-sector model. Results. We compared our models with spectral lines from different samples of galaxies for which we mixed characteristic emission from starburst regions and denser regions. We show that the infrared line ratios can constrain the density, metallicity, photoionization parameter, and the covering factor. We also built infrared diagnostic diagrams based on different infrared line ratios in which the galaxy location contains information about its physical conditions. Conclusions. The two-sector model that couples starburst emission regions and photon-dominated regions can span the existing observations. We implement the resulting emission line libraries in the CIGALE galaxy spectral energy distribution code to help interpret spectrophotometric observations.

Less is less: Photometry alone cannot predict the observed spectral indices of z ~ 1 galaxies from the LEGA-C spectroscopic survey

Aims. We test whether we can predict optical spectra from deep-field photometry of distant galaxies. Our goal is to perform a comparison in data space, highlighting the differences between predicted and observed spectra. Methods. The Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) provides high-quality optical spectra of thousands of galaxies at redshift 0.6 < z < 1. Broadband photometry of the same galaxies, drawn from the recent COSMOS2020 catalog, is used to predict the optical spectra with the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code Prospector and the MILES stellar library. The observed and predicted spectra are compared in terms of two age and metallicity-sensitive absorption features (HδA and Fe4383). Results. The global bimodality of star-forming and quiescent galaxies in photometric space is recovered with the model spectra. However, the presence of a systematic offset in the Fe4383 line strength and the weak correlation between the observed and modeled line strength imply that accurate age or metallicity determinations cannot be inferred from photometry alone. Conclusions. For now we caution that photometry-based estimates of stellar population properties are determined mostly by the modeling approach and not the physical properties of galaxies, even when using the highest-quality photometric datasets and state-of-the-art fitting techniques. When exploring a new physical parameter space (i.e. redshift or galaxy mass) high-quality spectroscopy is always needed to inform the analysis of photometry.

Analysis of the Functions of Cosmology Dust in Galaxy Formation

The physical laws related to star formation in galaxies are the key to understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies. The dust in the interstellar medium has a significant effect on both the star formation and the observational properties of the galaxy. Understanding the properties, effects, and evolution of cosmology dust in galaxies is an essential part of a complete picture of galaxy formation and evolution. In this study, the background of interstellar dust research in galaxy formation will be summarized. Some basic concepts and physical properties of galaxies are introduced. The definition, classification and evolution of galaxies will be discussed. It then states the properties of cosmology dust in galaxies, including the basic concepts of physics, properties, generation, and evolution of dust. It will then focus on the role of interstellar dust in galaxies, including its basic concepts and background. These results shed light on guiding better understanding of the functions of cosmology dust in galaxy formation.

Lyman- Spectra shapes in high redshift and low redshift galaxies

Lyman-alpha (Ly) photons were first predicted by Theodore Lyman in 1906 as part of his work on the hydrogen atom spectrum. The Ly transition occurs when an electron in a hydrogen atom falls from the second energy level to the ground state, releasing a photon with a wavelength of 121.6 nanometres. It was not until the 1960s that Ly photons were observed in astronomical sources, including galaxies and quasars. Since then, the Ly line has been recognized as a powerful probe of the intergalactic medium and the properties of galaxies, providing insights into the formation and evolution of structures in the universe. With the development of advanced telescopes and spectrographs, astronomers have been able to study Ly photons in greater detail and at higher redshifts. This has led to new discoveries and a deeper understanding of the universe, including the epoch of reionization and the formation of the first galaxies. Today, Ly studies continue to be an active area of research, with the potential to uncover even more insights into the nature and history of the cosmos. Ly spectral shapes are a crucial tool for unravelling the mysteries of the universe. These spectra provide valuable information about the distribution of gas and the physical properties of galaxies at different epochs. By analysing Ly spectra from galaxies with low and high redshifts, astronomers can gain insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies and the process of cosmic reionization.

The filament determination depends on the tracer: comparing filaments based on dark matter particles and galaxies in the gaea semi-analytical model

ABSTRACT Filaments are elongated structures that connect groups and clusters of galaxies and are visually the striking feature in cosmological maps. In the literature, typically filaments are defined only using galaxies, assuming that these are good tracers of the dark matter distribution, despite the fact that galaxies are a biased indicator. Here, we apply the topological filament extractor disperse to the predictions of the semi-analytical code GAlaxy Evolution and Assembly to investigate the correspondence between the properties of z = 0 filaments extracted using the distribution of dark matter and the distribution of model galaxies evolving within the same large-scale structure. We focus on filaments around massive clusters with a mass comparable to Virgo and Coma, with the intent of investigating the influence of massive systems and their feeding filamentary structure on the physical properties of galaxies. We apply different methods to compare the properties of filaments based on the different tracers and study how the sample selection impacts the extraction. Overall, filaments extracted using different tracers agree, although they never coincide totally. We also find that the number of filaments ending up in the massive clusters identified using galaxy distribution is typically underestimated with respect to the corresponding dark matter filament extraction.

The Subtle Effects of Mergers on Star Formation in Nearby Galaxies

Interactions and mergers play an important role in regulating the physical properties of galaxies, such as their morphology, gas content, and star formation rate (SFR). Controversy exists as to the degree to which these events, even gas-rich major mergers, enhance star formation activity. We study merger pairs selected from a sample of massive (M * ≥ 1010 M ⊙), low-redshift (z = 0.01–0.11) galaxies located in the Stripe 82 region of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, using stellar masses, SFRs, and total dust masses derived from a new set of uniformly measured panchromatic photometry and spectral energy distribution analysis. The dust masses, when converted to equivalent total atomic and molecular hydrogen, probe gas masses as low as ∼108.5 M ⊙. Our measurements delineate a bimodal distribution on the M gas–M * plane: the gas-rich, star-forming galaxies that trace the well-studied gas mass main sequence, and passive galaxies that occupy a distinct, gas-poor regime. These two populations, in turn, map into a bimodal distribution on the relation between SFR and gas mass surface density. Among low-redshift galaxies, galaxy mergers, including those that involve gas-rich and nearly equal-mass galaxies, exert a minimal impact on their SFR, specific SFR, or star formation efficiency. Starbursts are rare. The star formation efficiency of gas-rich, minor mergers even appears suppressed. This study stresses the multiple, complex factors that influence the evolution of the gas and its ability to form stars in mergers.

Probing bursty star formation by cross-correlating extragalactic background light and galaxy surveys

ABSTRACT Understanding the star formation rate (SFR) variability and how it depends on physical properties of galaxies is important for developing and testing the theory of galaxy formation. We investigate how statistical measurements of the extragalactic background light (EBL) can shed light on this topic and complement traditional methods based on observations of individual galaxies. Using semi-empirical models of galaxy evolution and SFR indicators sensitive to different star formation time-scales (e.g. H α and ultraviolet continuum luminosities), we show that the SFR variability, quantified by the joint probability distribution of the SFR indicators (i.e. the bivariate conditional luminosity function), can be characterized as a function of galaxy mass and redshift through the cross-correlation between deep, near-infrared maps of the EBL and galaxy distributions. As an example, we consider combining upcoming SPHEREx maps of the EBL with galaxy samples from Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time. We demonstrate that their cross-correlation over a sky fraction of fsky ∼ 0.5 can constrain the joint SFR indicator distribution at high significance up to z ∼ 2.5 for mass-complete samples of galaxies down to $M_{*}\sim 10^9\, {\rm M}_{\odot }$. These constraints not only allow models of different SFR variability to be distinguished, but also provide unique opportunities to investigate physical mechanisms that require large number statistics such as environmental effects. The cross-correlations investigated illustrate the power of combining cosmological surveys to extract information inaccessible from each data set alone, while the large galaxy populations probed capture ensemble-averaged properties beyond the reach of targeted observations towards individual galaxies.

Early Results from GLASS-JWST. XXII. Rest-frame UV–Optical Spectral Properties of Lyα Emitting Galaxies at 3 < z < 6

Lyα emission is possibly the best indirect diagnostic of Lyman continuum (LyC) escape since the conditions that favor the escape of Lyα photons are often the same that allow for the escape of LyC photons. In this work, we present the rest-frame UV–optical spectral characteristics of 11 Lyα emitting galaxies at 3 < z < 6—the redshift range that optimizes between intergalactic medium attenuation effects and temporal proximity to the epoch of reionization. From a combined analysis of JWST/NIRSpec and MUSE data, we present the Lyα escape fraction and study its correlation with other physical properties of galaxies that might facilitate Lyα escape. We find that our galaxies have low masses (80% of the sample with ), compact sizes (median R e ∼ 0.7 kpc), low dust content, moderate [O iii]/[O ii] flux ratios (mean ∼ 6.8 ± 1.2), and moderate Lyα escape fractions (mean 0.11). Our sample shows characteristics that are broadly consistent with low-redshift galaxies with Lyα emission, which are termed as “analogs” of the high-redshift population. We predict the LyC escape fraction in our sample to be low (0.03–0.07), although larger samples in the postreionization epoch are needed to confirm these trends.

A Census of WISE-selected Dual and Offset AGNs Across the Sky: New Constraints on Merger-driven Triggering of Obscured AGNs

Pairs of galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are powerful probes of merger-driven supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth as they can resolve individual AGNs and trace mergers over a large range of physical separations. To exploit this on a large scale for the first time for both obscured and unobscured AGNs, we use the photometric redshifts of AGNs selected by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) to find probabilistic pairs (<100 kpc separations) across the sky, along with a comparison sample of inactive galaxy pairs. Our final sample of integrated pair probabilities yields 198 AGN–AGN pairs (dual AGNs) and 2767 AGN–galaxy pairs (offset AGNs) with uniformly measured AGN and host galaxy physical properties. We find the fraction of galaxy pairs hosting WISE AGNs is dominated by offset AGNs and is significantly elevated above that of inactive galaxies for large host stellar masses. We show how the AGN merger fraction directly increases with AGN extinction for both offset and dual AGNs, with up to ∼40% of heavily obscured AGNs found in galaxy pairs. Elevated AGN merger fractions coincide with increased host specific star formation rates that suggest merger-driven coevolution of galaxies and SMBHs. Among dual AGNs, the most rapid SMBH growth may occur within the less-massive galaxy. Relative to stochastic mechanisms, mergers produce an excess of AGNs at increasingly smaller separations, especially for obscured AGNs (up to a factor of ∼5), and are augmented by correlated triggering. Finally, this excess is stronger than for lower-luminosity optically selected AGNs, regardless of the AGN obscuration level.

Asymmetry between Galaxy Apparent Magnitudes Shows a Possible Tension between Physical Properties of Galaxies and Their Rotational Velocity

Despite over a century of research, the physics of galaxy rotation is not yet fully understood, and there is a clear discrepancy between the observed mass of galaxies and their rotational velocity. Here, we report on another observation of tension between the physical properties of galaxies and their rotational velocity. We compare the apparent magnitude of galaxies and find a statistically significant asymmetry between galaxies that rotate in the same direction relative to the Milky Way and galaxies that rotate in the opposite direction relative to the Milky Way. While asymmetry in the brightness is expected due to the Doppler shift effect, such asymmetry is expected to be subtle. The observations shown here suggest that the magnitude difference is sufficiently large to be detected by Earth-based telescopes. The asymmetry is consistent in both the northern and southern galactic poles. The difference is also consistent across several different instruments such as DECam, SDSS, Pan-STARRS, and HST as well as different annotation methods, which include automatic, manual, or crowdsourcing annotations through “Galaxy Zoo”. The observation can also explain other anomalies such as the Ho tension. Analysis of Ia supernovae where the host galaxies rotate in the same direction relative to the Milky Way shows a much smaller tension with the Ho value as estimated by the CMB.

Non-parametric galaxy morphology from stellar and nebular emission with the CALIFA sample

Aims. We present a non-parametric morphology analysis of the stellar continuum and nebular emission lines for a sample of local galaxies. We explore the dependence of the various morphological parameters on wavelength and morphological type. Our goal is to quantify the difference in morphology between the stellar and nebular components. Methods. We derived the non-parametric morphological indicators of 364 galaxies from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) Survey. To calculate those indicators, we applied the StatMorph package on the high-quality integral field spectroscopic data cubes, as well as to the most prominent nebular emission-line maps, namely [O III]λ5007, Hα, and [N II]λ6583. Results. We show that the physical size of galaxies, M20 index, and concentration have a strong gradient from blue to red optical wavelengths. We find that the light distribution of the nebular emission is less concentrated than the stellar continuum. A comparison between the non-parametric indicators and the galaxy physical properties revealed a very strong correlation of the concentration with the specific star formation rate and morphological type. Furthermore, we explore how the galaxy inclination affects our results. We find that edge-on galaxies show a more rapid change in physical size and concentration with increasing wavelength due to the increase in the optical free path. Conclusions. We conclude that the apparent morphology of galaxies originates from the pure stellar distribution, but the morphology of the interstellar medium presents differences with respect to the morphology of the stellar component. Our analysis also highlights the importance of dust attenuation and galaxy inclination in the measurement of non-parametric morphological indicators, especially in the wavelength range 4000−5000 Å.

Investigating the Dominant Environmental Quenching Process in UVCANDELS/COSMOS Groups

We explore how the fraction of quenched galaxies changes in groups of galaxies with respect to the distance to the center of the group, redshift, and stellar mass to determine the dominant process of environmental quenching in 0.2 < z < 0.8 groups. We use new UV data from the UVCANDELS project in addition to existing multiband photometry to derive new galaxy physical properties of the group galaxies from the zCOSMOS 20 k group catalog. Limiting our analysis to a complete sample of log (M */M ⊙) > 10.56 group galaxies, we find that the probability of being quenched increases slowly with decreasing redshift, diverging from the stagnant field galaxy population. A corresponding analysis on how the probability of being quenched increases with time within groups suggests that the dominant environmental quenching process is characterized by slow (∼Gyr) timescales. We find a quenching time of approximately Gyr, consistent with the slow processes of strangulation and delayed-then-rapid quenching although more data are needed to confirm this result.

VST-GAME: Galaxy assembly as a function of mass and environment with VST

Context. Observational studies have widely demonstrated that galaxy physical properties are strongly affected by the surrounding environment. On one side, gas inflows provide galaxies with new fuel for star formation. On the other side, the high temperatures and densities of the medium are expected to induce quenching in the star formation. Observations of large structures, in particular filaments at the cluster outskirts (r &gt; 2r200), are currently limited to the low redshift Universe. Deep and wide photometric data, better if combined with spectroscopic redshifts, are required to explore several scenarios on galaxy evolution at intermediate redshift. Aims. We present a multi-band dataset for the cluster MACS J0416.1-2403 (z = 0.397), observed in the context of the Galaxy Assembly as a function of Mass and Environment with the VLT Survey Telescope (VST-GAME) survey. The project is aimed at gathering deep (r &lt; 24.4) and wide (approx. 20x20 Mpc2) observations at optical (u, ɡ, r, i, VST) wavelengths for six massive galaxy clusters at 0.2 &lt; z &lt; 0.6, complemented with near-infrared data (Y, J, Ks, VISTA, ESO public survey GCAV). The aim is to investigate galaxy evolution in a wide range of stellar masses and environmental conditions. This work describes the photometric analysis of the cluster and the definition of a density field, which will be a key ingredient for further studies on galaxy properties in the cluster outskirts. Methods. We extracted sources paying particular attention to recovering the faintest ones and simultaneously flagging point sources and sources with photometry affected by artifacts in the images. We combined all the extractions in a multiband catalog that is used to derive photometric redshifts through spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We then defined cluster memberships up to 5r200 from the cluster core and measure the density field, comparing galaxy properties in different environments. Results. We find that the ɡ – r colors show bimodal behaviors in all the environments, but the peak of the distribution of red galaxies shifts toward redder colors with increasing density, and the fraction of galaxies in the blue cloud increases with decreasing density. We also found three overdense regions in the cluster outskirts at r ~ 5r200. Galaxies in these structures have mean densities and luminosities similar to those of the cluster core. The color of galaxies suggests the presence of evolved galaxy populations, an insight into preprocessing phenomena over these substructures. We release the multiband catalog, down to the completeness limit of r &lt; 24.4 mag.

Central molecular zones in galaxies: Multitransition survey of dense gas tracers HCN, HNC, and HCO+

New measurements of 46 nearby galaxy centers in up to three transitions of HCN, HNC, and HCO+ combined with literature surveys establish a database of 130 galaxies measured in both HCN and HCO+, and 94 galaxies in HNC as well, allowing a systematic exploration of the relations between normalized luminosities and line ratios. The almost linear relations between luminosities are predominantly caused by distance effects and do not reflect galaxy physical properties. Individual galaxies show significant dispersion in both their luminosity and line ratio, which will be analyzed in more detail in a later paper. Very few line ratios correlate either with luminosities or with other line ratios. Only the normalized transition ladders of HCN and HCO+ and the J = 1 − 0 12CO/13CO isotopologue ratio are positively correlated with CO and far infrared (FIR) luminosity. On average, HCN and HCO+ have very similar intensities and trace the same gas. In galaxies dominated by an active nucleus, HCO+ intensities appear to be depressed relative to HCN intensities. Only a small fraction of CO emission is associated with gas emitting in HCN and HCO+, yet a significant fraction of even that gas appears to be translucent molecular gas. In the observed galaxy centers, the HCN/CO line intensity ratio is not a proxy for the dense gas fraction, and the FIR/HCN and FIR/CO ratios are not proxies for the star formation efficiency. A proper understandig of star formation requires a more appropriate determination of gas mass than provided by the intensities of individual HCN or CO transitions. The observed molecular line emission is fully consistent with UV-photon heating boosted by significant mechanical heating. The molecular gas sampled by HCN and HCO+ has low kinetic temperatures Tkin = 10 − 50 K, low densities nH = 104 − 105 cm−3, and low optical depths in the ground-state lines. Most of the gas sampled by CO has densities lower by one to two orders of magnitude. For a mechanical heating fraction of 0.5, a modest energy input of only G = 300 G0 is required.

Forward Modeling of Galaxy Populations for Cosmological Redshift Distribution Inference

We present a forward-modeling framework for estimating galaxy redshift distributions from photometric surveys. Our forward model is composed of: a detailed population model describing the intrinsic distribution of the physical characteristics of galaxies, encoding galaxy evolution physics; a stellar population synthesis model connecting the physical properties of galaxies to their photometry; a data model characterizing the observation and calibration processes for a given survey; and explicit treatment of selection cuts, both into the main analysis sample and for the subsequent sorting into tomographic redshift bins. This approach has the appeal that it does not rely on spectroscopic calibration data, provides explicit control over modeling assumptions and builds a direct bridge between photo-z inference and galaxy evolution physics. In addition to redshift distributions, forward modeling provides a framework for drawing robust inferences about the statistical properties of the galaxy population more generally. We demonstrate the utility of forward modeling by estimating the redshift distributions for the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey and the Vimos VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), validating against their spectroscopic redshifts. Our baseline model is able to predict tomographic redshift distributions for GAMA and VVDS with respective biases of Δz ≲ 0.003 and Δz ≃ 0.01 on the mean redshift—comfortably accurate enough for Stage III cosmological surveys—without any hyperparameter tuning (i.e., prior to doing any fitting to those data). We anticipate that with additional hyperparameter fitting and modeling improvements, forward modeling will provide a path to accurate redshift distribution inference for Stage IV surveys.
