Demodulation Reference Signal (DM-RS) based channel estimation for non-terrestrial networks to support high mobility

This paper provides an adaptive 5G-NR based solution for non-terrestrial networks (NTN) to support the high mobility of the user equipment (UE). A front-loaded demodulation reference signal (DM-RS) symbol pattern with additional orthogonal symbols is proposed to support UE mobility 500 km/h. We develop a 5G-NR link-level simulator (LLS) to analyze the performance of physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) under the proposed front-loaded DM-RS symbol pattern, tapped delay line (TDL) channel model, and precoding-based beamforming/MIMO schemes. The simulation results show that the proposed channel estimation method based on front-loaded DM-RS helps to improve the link reliability and achieves the maximum spectral efficiency up to 5.05 bps/Hz under 64-QAM, which can also contribute to the evolution of NTN in 6G networks to support the transonic speed mobility of UE.

Design and FPGA-Based Hardware Implementation of NB-IoT Physical Uplink Shared Channel Transmitter and Physical Downlink Shared Channel Receiver

With the anticipated growth of the internet of things (IoT) market, many low-power wide-area (LPWA) technologies have been introduced to connect a wide range of IoT devices with varying performance requirements. The narrowband internet of things (NB-IoT) is a 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) standardized LPWA technology that meets most IoT service requirements. In this paper, the design and implementation of the physical uplink transmitting chain as well as the physical downlink receiving chain of the NB-IoT user equipment (UE) are presented. Both chains’ main blocks are designed to follow the 3GPP NB-IoT LTE standard Release 14 (Rel-14). The whole design is experimentally implemented on the Virtex 7 (VC 709) Connectivity kit, and all performance metrics are reported. Moreover, an NB-IoT base station is implemented and integrated with the two prototyped UEs to set-up an NB-IoT system, which is employed to send data from one UE to another UE through the NB-IoT base station using two FPGAs (one to implement the sending UE and the other one to implement the receiving UE) and three universal software radio peripherals (USRPs) B200 (one to implement the RF front-end of the transmitting UE FPGA, one to implement the base station RF front-end, and one to implement the RF front-end of the receiving UE FPGA). Experimental results show that the implemented NB-IoT system is working successfully, as the two NB-IoT UEs communicate together successfully through the NB-IoT base station and exchange the data properly.

5G-NR Physical Layer-Based Solutions to Support High Mobility in 6G Non-Terrestrial Networks

Non-terrestrial network (NTN) systems can offer wide area coverage for applications requiring high mobility, which is expected in the sixth generation (6G) of telecommunication systems. This paper proposes a high-mobility support system based on the 5G-NR physical layer components for NTN connectivity. In this paper, we propose the optimization of 5G-NR numerologies and the impact of various modulation and coding schemes (MCS), 3GPP NR-NTN channel models, and MIMO/beamforming schemes with link-level simulation under pilot-aided-based perfect and DM-RS-based practical channel estimation at stationary UE and high mobility of 500 km/h, respectively. This paper also develops a link-level simulation of the 5G-NR physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) under the 3GPP NR-NTN tapped delay line (TDL) channel model to support UE mobility up to 500 km/h. The bit error rate (BER), maximum achievable throughput (Mbps), and spectral efficiency (bps/Hz) are analyzed for the 5G-NR-based potential elements to be utilized in the evolution of NTN. Furthermore, the denser DM-RS symbol pattern is proposed for utilization in channel estimation to support high mobility, as simulation results prove their capability of fast decoding while using the front-loaded symbol structure. The simulation results show that the large 5G-NR numerologies, such as 120 kHz and DM-RS-based channel estimation, support the high UE mobility by providing high link reliability and the maximum achievable throughput of 368.832 Mbps and spectral efficiency of 3.68 bps/Hz under 64-QAM for TDL-E (LOS) channel model, which can also be a potential solution to support transonic speed mobility in the NTN of 6G services.

An algorithm to reconstruct the constellations based on the superposed character in the Multi-dimensional transmission VLC system

In the Intensity Modulation and Direct Detection (IM-DD) based Multi-dimensional Visible Light Communication (VLC) system, we display different kinds of constellations by using superposed character. An algorithm named Cyclic Delay Diversity (CDD) is used to reduce the superposed signal order at the transmitter, it improves the data rate to 1.6 Gbps with the Bit Error Rate (BER) under the threshold in the Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) VLC system. Although CDD is a common method used in the Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) in Long Term Evolution (LTE), it brings an unexpected result in the VLC system. To our acknowledge, this is the first time to discuss the superposed constellations issue detailly and may provide a bran-new idea in the Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO)/MISO VLC system or IM-DD system in the following researches.

Design and Synchronization Procedures of a D&F Co-Operative 5G Network Based on SDR Hardware Interface: Performance Analysis.

Software defined radio (SDR) is a commonly used platform for its ease of operation and cost-effectiveness for the development and testing of real wireless communication systems. By supporting high transmission rates and enabling fast and cost-effective deployments, mainly in millimeter-wave (mmWave), the co-operative 5G network has been standardized by 3GPP Release 16. In this paper, a decode-and-forward (D&F) co-operative hardware network is proposed as one of the key technologies for future 5G/6G wireless networks. The proposed system consists of an emulated base station processing unit (gnodeB), a D&F protocol and the user equipment (UE). In particular, the design of the D&F relay node is based on an MIMO layer 2 relay technology. A testbed based on an SDR platform and Matlab software, in which the physical broadcast channel (PBCH) transmission, physical downlink control channel (PDCCH), physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH), and downlink shared channel (DL-SCH) for transport channel coding, according to the 3GPP standardized 5G downlink signal, has been designed. The key performance indicators (KPIs), namely EVM, BER, and throughput, were measured for 5G signals with 64-QAM and 256-QAM modulation schemes. The obtained results show that the D&F co-operative 5G network achieves substantially improved KPIs in the communication between the gnodeB and the UE in an outdoor-to-indoor scenario. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that the D&F protocol presents a good performance and behavior being compared to one commercial equipment.

Enhanced Paging Monitoring for 5G and Beyond 5G Networks

User experience, characterized by not only data rate and latency but also power consumption, is one of the major drivers for the success of 5G and Beyond-5G (B5G) networks. User Equipment (UE) power saving enhancements are at the forefront of ongoing discussions in 3GPP for next generation radio standards. Idle mode Discontinuous Reception (IDRX) is an important mechanism for UE’s power saving. However, IDRX in 5G/B5G networks is more challenging than in legacy networks. UE is required to measure Synchronization Signal Block(s) (SSBs) for Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) and Physical Downlink Common Control Channel (PDCCH) reception in every paging occasion (PO) of IDRX cycle in 5G/B5G networks. Furthermore, PDSCH decoding is very sensitive to the time-frequency synchronization error and requires multiple SSB measurements before every PO. In this paper we present an Enhanced Paging Monitoring (EPM) for reducing the impediments on IDRX in 5G/B5G due to SSB measurements and related overheads. We also extend our EPM proposal by incorporating paging early indication. The proposed EPM can manifest up to 37% more power saving compared to existing system while considering multiple SSB measurements that are essential to 5G/B5G networks.

In Situ Assessment of 5G NR Massive MIMO Base Station Exposure in a Commercial Network in Bern, Switzerland

This paper describes the assessment of radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure from fifth generation (5G) new radio (NR) base stations in a commercial NR network in Bern, Switzerland. During the measurement campaign, four base station sites were investigated and the exposure induced by the NR massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MaMIMO) antennas was assessed at 22 positions, at distances from the base station between 30 m and 410 m. The NR base stations operated at 3.6 GHz and used codebook-based beamforming. While the actual field levels without inducing downlink traffic were very low (<0.05 V/m) due to a low traffic load and low antenna input powers of up to 8 W, setting up a maximum downlink traffic stream towards user equipment resulted in a time-averaged exposure level of up to 0.4 V/m, whereas the maximum extrapolated exposure level reached 0.6 V/m. Extrapolated to an antenna input power of 200 W, values of 4.3 V/m and 4.9 V/m, respectively, were obtained, which amount to 0.5–0.6% of the reference level recommended by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). In Bern, it was found that the impact of the NR network on the total environmental RF exposure was very limited; with maximum downlink, it contributed 2% on average. Finally, it was also concluded that extrapolation to the maximum exposure level can be done without prior knowledge of the radiation patterns, directly based on the measurement of the Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) resource elements.

Sample Clock Offset Compensation in the fifth-generation new radio Downlink

In this paper, the authors investigate the issue of sampling clock offset (SCO) in fifth generation new radio systems. Due to the imperfect SCO estimation methods, the correction methods relying on the SCO estimation will not be perfect, so the proposed method directly corrects the effect of SCO without using any kind of estimation methods. Our method can work well in physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) and use reference signals as recommended by the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) standards. Through system-level simulations, the obtained results show that the throughput of the system is improved where the gain difference between the proposed method and the case without SCO compensation arises to reach 25 % over tapped-line (TDL) channel.

A Comparative Experimental Study of MIMO A&F and D&F Relay Nodes Using a Software-Defined Radio Platform

The relaying technologies in co-operative systems are considered a core element in actual and future wireless communications, assisting the network by enhancing its reliability and improving its capability through exploiting co-operativity. In this paper, a co-operative system testbed based on Software Defined Radio (SDR) through Universal Software Radio Peripherals (USRPs) and the MatlabTM software is presented. The main novelty in this development of the platform is the implementation of 4G signal features, such as Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) and Downlink Shared Channel (DL-SCH) for transport channel coding, which is one of the main contribution of the paper. The developed Multi-Input and Multi-Output (MIMO) SDR co-operative platform is capable of developing prototypes for the Relay Nodes. More specifically, the Amplify-&-Forward (A&F)—with or without Zero Forcing (ZF) and Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) Pre-Equalization—and Decode-&-Forward (D&F) protocols were implemented. Both Single-Input and Single-Output (SISO) and MIMO modes are supported by our testbed. The developed A&F and D&F MIMO co-operative systems in this paper utilize Orthogonal Space-Frequency Block Codes (OSFBCs) for the transmission of data symbols from the source to the destination. Our results show that relay nodes can substantially improve the Bit Error Rate (BER) and throughput in communications between the eNodeB (eNB) and User Equipment (UE). In particular, the maximum throughput achieved by conventional MIMO A&F is 9.3Mbps at SNR=16dB, which is 4Mbps higher than throughput of MIMO Non-Co-operative. It also shows the capacity improvement when considering the pre-equalization in the A&F schemes, compared to the conventional A&F Relay Node. For example, with MIMO A&F-MMSE pattern, a value of 11.8 Mbps is achieved for SNR=16dB, which is 84.8 % of the maximum system throughput (13.95 Mbps). On the other hand, the obtained results with D&F schemes far exceed those obtained with A&F strategies, achieving the maximum performance with the 2 × 2 MIMO D&F protocol from SNR=8dB. Furthermore, this work constitutes a first stage to the implementation of a 5G New-Radio Co-operative System platform.

Joint Statistical and Machine Learning Approach for Practical Data-Driven Assessment of User Throughput Quality in Microcellular Radio Networks

The provision of enhanced user experience with higher-data transmission speed over the radio frequency channels was one of the core objectives of evolving Long Term Evolution (LTE), which is a 4th generation of cellular broadband communication standard. LTE was developed to supports data transmission speed up to 300 Mbps and 75 Mbps in downlink and uplink, respectively, utilizing a robust multiplexing technique. For mobile radio networks operators to maintain high operability around the ever increasing and demanding subscribers, periodic evaluation, quantitative estimation and analysis of network performance is pivotal. There exist a quantum of previous research works on LTE system network performance that have been conducted both at spatial domain and temporal domain, but the authors concentrated their studies either on practical LTE radio coverage issues only or on general LTE network performance issues using analytical/simulation techniques. In this contribution, a combined statistical and machine learning approach is proposed and applied to provide an in-depth user data throughput performance of operational LTE networks in relation to signal coverage and signal quality parameters, using in typical microcellular built-up terrains as case study. Specifically, the impact of transmitter- receiver communication distance, received signal reference power, received Signal reference quality, Signal to Noise Ratio, Received Signal Strength and Channel Quality Indicator on user throughput over Radio Link Control, Physical Downlink Shared Channel and Packet Data Convergence Protocol layers have been shown using professional TEMS investigation tools. Particularly, for the purpose of effective LTE system network planning and management, the most influencing signal coverage and signal quality parameters on user throughput performance are also examined and shown in the framework of Self-organsing map (SOM) and statistical correlation stratagems.

Bringing AI to the edge: A formal M&S specification to deploy effective IoT architectures

ABSTRACT Internet of Things applications are based on ubiquitous networks of multiple distributed devices, with limited computing resources and power, capable of collecting and storing data from heterogeneous sources in real-time. To avoid network saturation and delays, new architectures are needed to provide real-time Big Data and data analytics capabilities at the edge of the network, where energy efficiency needs to be considered to ensure a sustainable and effective deployment in areas of human activity. In this research, we present an IoT model based on the principles of Model-Based Systems Engineering. It covers the description of the entire architecture, from IoT devices to the processing units in edge data centres, and includes the location-awareness of user equipment, network, and computing infrastructures to optimise federated resource management in terms of delay and power consumption. Design and implementation of beamformed physical downlink control channel for 4G massive MIMO systems

The Full Dimension-MIMO (FD-MIMO) technology is capable of achieving huge improvements in network throughput with simultaneous connectivity of a large number of mobile wireless devices, unmanned aerial vehicles, and the Internet of Things (IoT). In the Long Term Evolution (LTE), with a large number of antennae at the base station and the ability to perform beamforming, the capacity of the physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) has increased a lot. However, the current 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) specifications of the LTE do not allow the base station to perform any beamforming techniques for the physical downlink control channel (PDCCH). Hence, PDCCH has neither the capacity nor the coverage of PDSCH. Therefore, PDCCH capacity still limits the performance of a network, as it dictates the number of users that a base station can schedule at a given time instant. In Release 11, 3GPP introduced enhanced PDCCH (EPDCCH) to increase the PDCCH capacity at the cost of sacrificing the PDSCH resources. The problem of enhancing the PDCCH capacity within the available control channel resources has not been addressed yet in the literature. Hence, in this paper, we propose a novel beamformed PDCCH (BF-PDCCH) design which is aligned to the 3GPP specifications and requires simple software changes at the base station. For the evaluation of the proposed BF-PDCCH, we model various link abstractions. We evaluate them through link-level simulations and then use all these abstractions in the system-level simulations. We show that the proposed BF-PDCCH achieves significant improvement in network throughput and outperforms the current state of the art algorithms, PDCCH, and EPDCCH schemes.

Automated performance‐based design technique for an efficient LTE PDSCH implementation using SDSoC tool

SummarySystem on a chip (SoC) creates massive design challenges for SoC‐based designers. The design challenges start from functional, architectural verification complexity and finally meeting performance constraints. In addition, heterogeneity of components and tools introduces long design cycles. The Software‐Defined System‐on‐Chip (SDSoC) developed by Xilinx is used to create custom SoC on a heterogeneous FPGA‐CPU platform. The SDSoC tool provides fast, flexible, and short design cycle to develop heterogeneous FPGA‐CPU platform. The objective of this paper is to introduce a new automated design technique to build a SoC on a heterogeneous FPGA‐CPU platform that meets design requirements using SDSoC tool. In this paper, the typical SDSoC design flow is introduced. In addition, a new automated SDSoC design technique is developed to design SoC on a heterogeneous FPGA‐CPU platform on the basis of performance metrics such as area, power, and latency. Design of physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) in long‐term evolution (LTE) is presented as a case study. This paper provides the implementation of the transmitter and the receiver of the PDSCH in LTE using SDSoC tool and selects a platform that meets performance metrics constraints.

5G New Radio Prototype Implementation Based on SDR

The fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR) has been developed to provide significant improvements in scalability, flexibility, and efficiency in terms of power usage and spectrum as well. To meet the 5G vision, service and performance requirements, various candidate technologies have been proposed in 5G new radio; some are extensions of 4G and, some are developed explicitly for 5G. These candidate technologies include non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA), and Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) channel coding. In addition, deploying software defined radio (SDR) instead of traditional hardware modules. In this paper we build an open source SDR-based platform to realize the transceiver of the physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) of 5G NR according to Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard. We provide a prototype for pairing between two 5G users using NOMA technique. In addition, a suitable design for LDPC channel coding is performed. The intermediate stage of segmentation, rate matching and interleaving are also carried out in order to realize a standard NR frame. Finally, experiments are carried out in both simulation and real time scenario on the designed 5G NR for the purpose of system performance evaluation, and to demonstrate its potential in meeting future 5G mobile network challenges.

Efficient Estimation Algorithm of Carrier Frequency Offset for LTE Machine-Type Communication Using Frequency Hopping

The demanding challenge of cellular-based machine type communication (MTC) is to meet emerging requirements of user equipment (UE), which can provide improved coverage and lower power consumption. To this end, an improved coverage UE is needed to estimate frequency error in the low coverage area. In this paper, an improved frequency offset synchronization scheme is proposed for MTC over long term evolution system. To perform the improved frequency offset estimation, the proposed method is based on repetitive nature and frequency hopping of the physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH), which is integrated with weighted least-squares estimation to eliminate the effect of channel fading. This design makes it possible to effectively estimate the residual frequency offset when there is frequency selective fading. It is shown from simulation results that the frequency-hopped PDSCH signal is effectively used to minimize the estimation error for coverage enhancement of MTC UEs in poor channel conditions.

VCSEL-Based Radio-Over-G652 Fiber System for Short-/Medium-Range MFH Solutions

In view of the realization of short- and medium-range Mobile Front-Haul connections for present (LTE) and future (5G) cellular networks, a cost effective, low-consumption radio over fiber system is proposed, based on 850-nm Single Mode Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers and Standard Single Mode Fibers (SSMFs). An efficient countermeasure to possible impairments due to the bimodal behavior of SSMFs at 850 nm allows even in critical cases to maintain at high level the quality of the received signal. The performances are evaluated with reference to the Physical Downlink Shared Channel of an entire LTE frame with 20-MHz bandwidth centered in band 20 of the standard. In terms of error vector magnitude and outage probability under temperature stress, the system is able to transmit 256-QAM signals in compliance with the LTE standard, which corresponds to a raw data rate transmission of 134.4 Mbit/s, up to distances of 1.5 km.

Design of Simulation System for LTE-U Using 5 GHz Band in MATLAB

Unused spectrum is being a limited commodity for the telecom industry. However, up to 500 MHz of unlicensed spectrum in 5 GHz band is in use for several applications and services, particularly in WiFi around the world. Unlicensed spectrum has foreseen to play a vital role in 5G. It is already under discussion at different forums that how the unlicensed band advantage can promote 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks. Long Term Evolution Unlicensed (LTE-U) is an extension of existing LTE mobile networks, and allow LTE technology to use unlicensed bands as an adjunct to the licensed band. It will not only deliver a better user experience to end users but also boost capacity for network operators. In this paper, a Simulink based LTE PDSCH (Physical Downlink Shared Channel) model is introduced which uses the 5 GHz band according to the specifications prescribed by LTE-U Forum and 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project). It demonstrates multi-codeword transmission within a small cell from an eNodeB to a User Equipment (UE). LTE enabling technologies like OFDMA, closed-loop spatial multiplexing, turbo channel coding and link adaptations are used to design this model. Minimum mean square error (MMSE) technique as a linear detection method is used for spatially multiplexed Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO). Bit error rate is analyzed for QPSK, 16-QAM, and 64-QAM and compared for hard and soft decisions MMSE based MIMO detection. Fairly improved throughputs are obtained for multi-antenna configurations considering the low mobility scenarios and low correlation settings between links.

Degradasi Jaringan TD-LTE 2.300 – 2.400 MHz Akibat Interferens Alur-Waktu Silang

Indonesia has set the frequency band 2,300-2,400 MHz (3GPP band 40) as one of the frequency allocations for the TD-LTE mobile network. Consequently, the implementation of TD-LTE should pay attention to the phenomenon of Crossed Timeslot Interference (CTI) which can occur as a result of the operators’ uplink-downlink configurations. A work simulating the impact of CTI interference that occurs between two network operators having an adjacent spectrum allocation is developed. Network performance indicator is measured through the value of Bit Error Rate (BER) and throughput value of Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH). The results show that the CTI has caused a degeneration of BER leading to a reduction of throughput value of PDSCH by 15.29%. This work is expected to be a reference for Indonesian network operators to pay more attention to the phenomenon of CTI which could potentially cause degradation of TD-LTE network performance.

Enhanced Signal Detection in 3GPP LTE System with Successive Interference Cancellation

In this paper we introduced interference cancellation (IC) in the cell search and the detection of physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) in long term evolution (LTE) of 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP). After user equipment (UE) is turned on, it has to first search the target cell using synchronization channel (SCH). After UE gets timing and cell identification (Cell ID) by cell search process, it can start to transmit and receive data through the traffic channel. In most cases, UE experiences the interference from surrounding neighbor cells, which may result in the degradation of the receiver performance. Not only in time division duplex (TDD) but also frequency division duplex network (FDD), the cells must be deployed with the time aligned to support better successful handover and also provide multemedia broadcast and multicast service (MBMS) efficiently in the network. In synchronous network system, since every cell sends his SCH using shared resource allocation, it is inevitable that two or more neighboring cells can interfere each other in some situation. The cell specific reference signal (CRS) is used for channel estimation in downlink reception. The CRS from neighbor cells may overlap with the resource of PDSCH of the target cell. Hence, the collision of SCH and CRS from the neighbor cells can degrade both the performance of cell search and PDSCH reception at the same time. In this paper, we analyzed the improved performance of the cell search and PDSCH reception by using successive interference cancellation. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can effectively reduce the mutual interference and improve the performance of the signal detection in view of the cell search and PDSCH reception, respectively.

The Research on a New Method of Indicating Downlink Power Allocation through MAC Control Element in LTE System

This paper introduces a new method about the downlink power allocation in LTE system, first, eNB indicates the downlink power allocation information through MAC Control Element, second, UserEquipment calculates Energy Per Resource Element of Physical Downlink Shared CHannel Resource Element according to the downlink power allocation information, finally, UserEquipment use the new Energy Per Resource Element to decode. The advantage of the method is that processing delay is less, and it improves performance of downlink transmission system.
