Catecholamine response to intracranial hypertension.

Pulmonary congestion, hemorrhage, and edema, produced in the experimental animal by various methods of disturbing the central nervous system, have led to the concept that such neurogenically-initiated changes are mediated through the autonomic nervous system. Blocking the sympathetic nervous mechanisms prevents these changes. Little is found concerning the expected role of catecholamines. In this study, using a standard model of increasing intracranial pressure (ICP), intense cardiovascular changes, with blood pressure rising above 320 mm Hg and heart rate of 180 beats per minute, were noted. Within seconds, plasma catecholamine levels rose as much as 1200 times the highest normal values for epinephrine, 145 times for norepinephrine, and 35 times for dopamine. These changes occurred only when raised ICP was sustained and spatial compensation of the brain was exceeded. It is not unlikely that these events are related not only to increased ICP, but also to the effects of physical distortion of the brain stem with structural, functional, and vascular alterations within it.

A generalized approach to the evaluation of reflection effects in close binary systems

A convenient integral formulation (σ-integrals) proves useful in describing reflection effects where there is an axisymmetric illumination, and the form of the emergent intensity distribution of the reflected component can be approximated by a cosine series. The formulation is applied to close binary systems where theoretical curves for the reflected light variation are considered. The treatment proceeds to the fifth power in the fractional dimensions — i.e. including combination of the leading terms of reflection with physical distortion of the components — and is therefore consistent with the usual ‘first order’ theory of photometric proximity effects in close binary systems.

Visual Function in Acute Posterior Multifocal Placoid Pigment Epitheliopathy

We examined a 19-year-old woman with acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy one week after she noted blurring of central vision. Her corrected visual acuity was R.E.: 6/7.5 (20/25), and L.E.: 6/12 (20/40). The visual fields showed 10-degree pericentral scotomas. A color vision defect and an abnormal Stiles-Crawford effect were present. Dark adaptation showed a delayed time course, with normal final thresholds. The electro-oculogram was subnormal, suggesting widespread abnormality of the retinal pigment epithelium. Active lesions resolved within three weeks, but fluorescein angiography showed characteristic widespread residual changes. Within three weeks, she had normal visual acuity and a normal electro-oculogram. Other tests of visual function showed recovery with a slower time course. By one year, the visual fields, color matching, Stiles-Crawford effect, and dark adaptation were almost normal. Analysis of the color-matching data and Stiles-Crawford effect indicated that the abnormalities of macular function were caused by an underlying lesion of the pigment epithelium and photoreceptors. This caused a physical distortion of the photoreceptor layer and metabolic disfunction of the photoreceptors.

Changes in the Fine Structure of the Human Dental Pulp Subsequent to Carious Exposure

Sections of human pulp tissue taken from the region of a carious exposure in four young patients each having a clinical history of spontaneous dental pain were examined with the electron microscope. All the tissues examined exhibited a generalized edema, and an infiltration with lymphocytes, plasma cells, polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages. Varying degree of lysis of pulp and inflammatory cells were evident. The unmyelinated nerve axons of the pulp appeared to be least affected. Extracellular lysosomes were present in many of the necrotic areas. Edematous vacuoles were noted in two of the pulp specimens. In some of the sections these vacuoles appeared to be responsible for a physical distortion of adjacent unmyelinated nerve axons. It was postulated that such distortion may be a contributing factor to the pain of pulpitis. In another of the pulp specimens, micro-organisms were found intracellularly and extracellularly. Intracellularly they were present within the cytoplasm of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and macrophages and exhibited evidence of lysis. Only two morphological forms, a gram positive rod, and a gram positive coccus were identified.

Relative length is a constant and distinctive characteristic for each autosomal SC, despite variations in absolute length from cell to cell. Arm ratio is distinctive for each SC except for two of the three sub-acrocentrics, and serves, together with relative length, for identification. The constancy of relative length and arm ratios indicates biological stability and lack of physical distortion in these spread preparations. There is a 1:1 relationship between relative lengths of autosomal SCs and mitotic autosomes: their arm ratios are similar. These close parallels provide strikingly similar SC and somatic karyotypes. Variability was observed in sub-acrocentric arm ratios and in lengths of unpaired X and Y axes, correlated with the presence of constitutive heterochromatin. - Utilizing progressive differentiations of the X and Y chromosomes for staging, it is demonstrated that autosomal SCs decrease in length from late zygotene to mid-pachytene, and then increase at late pachytene. Within a nucleus, synchrony of length changes is maintained. It is concluded that the factors governing autosomal SC length are regular for any given bivalent from cell to cell and may be related to those that control somatic autosome length relationships. - The X and Y axes differ quantitatively as well as qualitatively from autosomal SCs. The SC portion of the X and Y is constant in length through most of pachytene; the unpaired axes shorten and lengthen, but not in proportion to autosomal SCs. X and Y relative lengths ard arm ratios vary throughout pachytene and do not maintain proportionality with somatic values. The evidence suggests, but does not prove, that the long arm of the X is paired with the short arm of the Y.-Twists occur in autosomal SCs at increasing frequencies throughout pachytene but cannot account for length changes. The number of twists per SC is directly proportional to SC length. Intertwining of SCs is random and proportional to SC length. End-to-end associations of autosomal SCs appear to be random; however, the ends of the X and Y are less often involved in such connections. - The length of axial material in all chromosomes at pachytene, expressed as an equivalent length of DNA double helix, represents 0.013% of the diploid DNA complement.

A model for the creep of concrete

Porosity and density changes were measured for a series of mortar specimens and a series of cement paste specimens subjected to various compressive stress histories during desorption and sorption cycles. It was found that hydration is inhibited by compressive stress. Under normal basic and drying creep, the effect of compressive stress is to reduce the porosity and increass the interlayer volume with a corresponding increase in the weight of water retained in the interlayer spaces. For specimens completely dried under load the interlayer volume decreases with load. A model for the creep of concrete is advanced in which, under sustained stress, interlayer volume increases as a result of physical distortion of the solid sheets of cement hydrate.

The Physical Distortion of Schmidt Plates

One characteristic of Schmidt telescopes is that the focal surface is spherical. This causes a flat photographic plate to be buckled and under strain while it is in the plate holder. In the early days of the space program, it was proposed to use Schmidt telescopes for the calibration of tracking stations because they were photographically fast. The writer opposed this proposal because they are not of high astrometric quality, for the reason indicated above.

Thin sections. I. A study of section thickness and physical distortion produced during microtomy.

Knowledge of the thickness of sections is important for proper interpretation of electron micrographs. Therefore, the thicknesses of sections of n-butyl methacrylate polymer were determined by ellipsometry, and correlated with the color shown in reflected light. The results are: gray, thinner than 60 mmicro; silver, 60 to 90 mmicro; gold, 90 to 150 mmicro; purple, 150 to 190 mmicro; blue, 190 to 240 mmicro; green, 240 to 280 mmicro; and yellow, 280 to 320 mmicro. These results agree well with optical theory and with previous published data for thin films. Sections, after cutting, are 30 to 40 per cent shorter than the face of the block from which they were cut. Only a small improvement results from allowing the sections to remain in the collecting trough at room temperature. Heating above room temperature, however, reduces this shortening, with a corresponding improvement in dimensions and spatial relationships in the sections. When the thickness of the section is considered in interpreting electron micrographs instead of considering the section to be two-dimensional, a more accurate interpretation is possible. The consideration of electron micrographs as arising from projections of many profiles from throughout the whole thickness of the section explains the apparent lack of continuity often observed in serial sections. It is believed that serial sections are actually continuous, but that the change in size of structure through the thickness of one section and the consideration of only the largest profile shown in the micrograph can account for the lack of continuity previously observed.
