Community Structure of Marine Macrofauna at Diu coast, Gujarat, India

The marine ecosystem support variety of habitat that consequently supports high species diversity. The present study investigated the diversity of marine macrofauna in the rocky intertidal zone of Diu, Gujarat. Survey was carried out from 4 different sites during April 2022 to March 2023. During the study, all the study sites were surveyed regularly on monthly basis during the lowest low tide period. During the examination, the encountered fauna was carefully observed along the coast using a Quadrat method and visual encounter method and extensive photography was carried out. This study demonstrates 70 species of macrofauna at coastal area of Diu. The highest diversity was observed in the phylum Mollusca (37 species), followed by phylum Arthropoda (16 species), Cnidaria (8 species), Porifera (4 species), Annelida (species 2), Echinodermata (2 species), Platyhelminthes (1 species). This study highlights the importance of protecting the diverse marine habitats in Diu and emphasizes the need for further research on the ecology and conservation of the region’s unique marine biodiversity.

Enhancing diagnostic accuracy in common human poxvirus infections during mpox outbreak: A dermoscopy review.

Poxviruses belong to the Poxviridae family, a group of pathogens known for their high infectivity in humans, posing significant health threats. One of the most well-known representatives of poxvirus infections is smallpox, which has been successfully eradicated. However, in recent years, there has been a resurgence in cases of mpox, another member of the Poxviridae family, raising concerns about the potential for a global pandemic or a worldwide health crisis. While the typical clinical presentation of mpox and other poxvirus infections often involves cutaneous lesions, there have been reports of various atypical and non-classic clinical manifestations. Dermoscopy has emerged as a crucial diagnostic tool, aiding dermatologists in clinical practice to make informed decisions. In this summary, we provide an overview of the clinical and dermoscopic features of representative cutaneous lesions associated with human poxvirus infections, including mpox, orf, milker's nodule, and molluscum contagiosum.

Common Skin Infections in High School Athletes and the Role of the School Nurse.

Skin infections in high school athletes pose a risk of transmission to other student athletes. Therefore, it is important to promptly identify possible skin infections and refer them to the healthcare provider for treatment so athletes can return to play quickly and with little interruption to the team. Common skin infections include bacterial infections such as Streptococcus and Staphylococcus, viral infections such as herpes simplex and molluscum contagiosum, and fungal infections such as tinea corporis and capitis. The National Federation of State High School Associations provides guidance for the prevention of skin infections as well as return to play guidelines. The school nurse and high school athletic trainer are both healthcare professionals who play a role in preventing, identifying, monitoring, and caring for student athletes who contract skin infections.

First Record of Parasitic Isopod Renocila bijui Aneesh & Bruce, 2020 (Isopoda: Cymothoidae) from the Arabian Sea

Renocila bijui Aneesh & Bruce, 2020 was described as a new species from Andaman & Nicobar Islands. After its description, no studies confirm its distribution to any other places of India. Here we report Renocila bijui Aneesh & Bruce, 2020 for the first time from the Arabian Sea, near Okha coast of Gujarat. This paper also reports the species for the first time from the west coast of India as well as from Arabian Sea with its morphological characters. This fish parasitic isopod has a specific host fish, namely Acanthurus triostegus [1], and A. mata (Cuvier, 1829) which are common in coral reef areas in Indian coast. As isopods are associated with many species of commercially important fishes and shell fishes and causes significant losses to fisheries by the way of killing, stunting or damaging the fishes and thereby limiting aquaculture production and its economic viability, the report of this isopod from Gujarat coast has a significance in respect of marine fisheries.

Increasing risk of invasions by organisms on marine debris in the Southeast coast of India

Increasing amount of anthropogenic litter in the marine environment has provided an enormous number of substrates for a wide range of marine organisms, thus serving as a potential vector for the transport of fouling organisms. Here, we examined the fouling organisms on different types of stranded litter (plastic, glass, rubber, foam sponge, cloth, metal and wood) on eight beaches along the southeast coast of India. In total, 17 encrusting species belonging to seven phyla (Arthropoda, Bryozoa, Mollusca, Annelida, Cnidaria, Chlorophyta and Foraminifera) were identified on 367 items, with one invasive species, the mussel Mytella strigata, detected. The most common species associated with marine litter were the cosmopolitan bryozoans Jellyella tuberculata (%O = 31.64 %) and J. eburnea (28.61 %), the barnacle species Lepas anserifera (29.97 %), Amphibalanus amphitrite (22.34 %) and Amphibalanus sp. (14.16 %), and the oyster species Saccostrea cucullata (13.62 %) and Magallana bilineata (5.44 %). We also reported the first records on stranded litter of four species: the gastropod species Pirenella cingulata and Umbonium vestiarium, the foraminiferan Ammonia beccarii, and the oyster M. bilineata. This study is thus the first documentation of marine litter as a vector for species dispersal in India, where the production and consumption of plastic rank among the highest in the world. We also highlight the increasing risk of invasions by non-indigenous organisms attached to debris along the southeast coast of India. Comprehensive monitoring efforts are thus needed to elucidate the type of vectors responsible for the arrival of invasive species in this region. Raising awareness and promoting education are vital components in fostering sustainable solutions to combat plastic pollution in the country and globally.

Giant Molluscum Contagiosum Opportunistic Infection in a HIV/AIDS Patient

Atypical types of molluscum contagiosum (MC), which are present in immunocompromised patients and show substantial weakening of cellular immunity, can be difficult to diagnose. Low CD4 cell counts are associated with MC lesions, which are most frequently seen in HIV patients. We report MC lesions in the trunk and lower extremities in a 40-year-old HIV-positive female patient. A 75 cells/mm CD4 count was present in the patient. To rule out more dangerous disorders including dimorphic fungal infections, a skin biopsy was performed. The hypogastrum of the trunk and vulva were affected by the lesions which were painless, flesh-colored papules and nodules. Syphilis and hepatitis B virus testing came out negative, while serological tests for HIV-1 were positive. Intracytoplasmic molluscum bodies were detected in the skin biopsy. However, the opportunity for an early diagnosis in our case was lost.

Quality of life in children with skin disease: A Spanish sample

IntroductionThe impact of skin diseases on quality of life varies widely, and some can have an impact similar to that of asthma or cystic fibrosis. Material and methodsWe conducted a cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study with the aim of describing the degree to which quality of life was affected in paediatric patients managed in a dermatology clinic by means of the Children’s Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI). ResultsIn our study, the skin disease with the greatest impact on quality of life was atopic dermatitis, chiefly on account of symptoms like pruritus and insomnia. It was followed by acne, mainly due to the associated negative feelings (shame, sadness, etc.). Quality of life in patients with viral warts and molluscum contagiosum was mostly affected by the treatment, chiefly based on cryotherapy. Most patients with nevi or café-au-lait spots did not have a decreased quality of life, although up to one third of them had negative feelings in relation to their skin disease. DiscussionAtopic dermatitis was the common skin disease that caused the greatest impairment in quality of life in our sample, although other diseases also had an impact on different dimensions of quality of life. We ought to underscore the recommendation to use less painful treatments than cryotherapy for viral warts and molluscum contagiosum, as the impairment in quality of life in paediatric patients with these conditions was mainly due to the treatment.

History of S. aureus Skin Infection Significantly Associates with History of Eczema Herpeticum in Patients with Atopic Dermatitis.

Patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) are uniquely susceptible to a number of serious viral skin complications, including eczema herpeticum (EH), caused by herpes simplex virus. This study explored the associations between biomarkers of epithelial barrier dysfunction, type 2 immunity, Staphylococcus aureus infection, and S. aureus-specific immunoglobulin responses in a cohort of AD subjects with and without a history of EH (EH+ and EH-, respectively). A total of 112 subjects with AD (56 EH+, 56 EH-), matched by age and AD severity, were selected from a registry of over 3000 AD subjects. Logistic regression was used to test the association between history of S. aureus skin infection and history of EH, while controlling for a number of confounders. Compared to those without a history of S. aureus skin infection, subjects with a history of S. aureus skin infection were found to have more than sixfold increased odds of having a history of EH (6.60, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.00-21.83), after adjusting for history of other viral skin infections (molluscum contagiosum virus, human papillomavirus), serum total IgE, and IgG against the S. aureus virulence factor SElX. These findings indicate an important relationship between S. aureus skin infections and EH.

Evaluation of Daylight Methylene Blue Photodynamic Therapy in Multiple Recurrent Molluscum Contagiosum

Abstract Background Molluscum contagiosum is a common viral infection caused by DNA Poxvirus. Daylight-photodynamic therapy (DL-PDT) is defined as a photochemical reaction used to selectively destroy tissue. Objectives To evaluate the efficacy and safety of daylight methylene blue photodynamic therapy in treatment of multiple recurrent molluscum contagiosum. Subject and methods This is a single blinded controlled prospective interventional clinical study including 20 patients with molluscum contagiosum diagnosed clinically and by dermoscopy. Patients subjected to daylight methylene blue-mediated photodynamic therapy. Topical MB liposomal loaded 10% cream was applied over the lesions area with occlusion and left for 15 minutes. Two leisons were left as control in each studied patient. Patients were instructed to stay outdoors exposing their lesions and the adjacent area to daylight continuously for at least 90 minutes (if it was a sunny day) or 120 minutes (if it was an overcast or partially sunny day) between 11:00 am to 02:00 pm. Treatment sessions were done weekly for 10 weeks or till complete clearance. Follow up of the patients for 6 months after end of study to detect recurrence or appearance of new lesions. Results Daylight MB Mediated PDT response in a total of 20 (100%) studied patients showed Excellent response to treatment shown as complete clearance in 65%( no.=13) of patients, very good response to treatment in 15.0%( no.=3), good response to treatment in 10.0%( no.=2) and poor response to treatment in 10.0%( no.=2). The total number of lesions was 313. Response of the lesions in studied patents to MB-PDT was monitored by dermoscopic follow up of lesions. Lesions showed complete response in 66.5% (no. = 208) of lesions, partial response in 25.2% (no. = 79) of lesions and no response in 8.3% (no. = 26) of lesions. No serious side effects and also MB-DL/PDT is a painless treatment. No relapse was detected at the site of cleared MC or at a near site during the follow-up period of 6 months following the procedure. Conclusion Daylight-PDT using MB is effective in clearing MC lesions, also is safe, easy to carry out, economic, acceptable cosmetic results with no recurrence, convenient especially for children as it is a painless treatment.

Viral Conjunctivitis: Findings, Therapy, and Prophylaxis

Viral conjunctivitis is one of the most common acute eye diseases. The fall and winter months are known to be the main season for viral infections which is also reflected in the ophthalmological outpatient clinics. Viral conjunctivitis is often accompanied by symptoms of the upper and lower respiratory tract, fever, chills, arthralgia or skin lesions. The spectrum of pathogens comprises DNA viruses such as Adeno-, Herpes simplex and Molluscum contagiosum as well as RNA viruses. Symptoms caused by pandemic pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2 and mpox viruses can also cause ocular manifestation. Viral conjunctivitis is often self-limiting leaving no residual symptoms, however an ophthalmologist should be consulted if there are inflammatory symptoms of the anterior eye accompanied by visual disturbance. It is particularly important to recognize the affection of corneal or even intraocular structures early to initiate an adequate and effective therapy. Affection of the cornea, vitreus or retina can result in temporary or permanent impairment of the field of vision and visual acuity. The diagnosis is usually made without further tests on the basis of the typical clinical presentation. Rapid tests or PCR diagnostics are also available for confirmation. In most patients the treatment is symptomatically with artificial tears and antibiotic eye drops in cases accompanied by secondary bacterial infections, not prophylactically. If the cornea or other ocular structures are affected by certain viruses, local as well as systemic virostatic therapy is initiated. The most important prophylactic measure is meticulous and consistent hygiene.

Open-Label Observational Study of a Topical Formulation of Calcium Spirulan Contained in a Defined Extract of the Microalga Spirulina platensis in the Treatment of Children with Molluscum Contagiosum.

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a common viral skin infection primarily affecting children which is difficult to treat using available therapeutic approaches. The sulfated polysaccharide named calcium spirulan (Ca-SP) has demonstrated antiviral effects against herpes simplex virus in keratinocytes in vitro, and a cream containing 1.5% Ca-SP and 1% of a defined microalgae extract (Spiralin®) effectively prevented herpes labialis in a trial with susceptible individuals. This observational study aimed to show antiviral effects of a similar formulation (Spirularin® VS) against MC in children. Children with active MC lesions were treated with Spirularin® VS cream twice daily on affected skin over several months and asked to return for follow-up visits after 1 to 3 months. Clinical status of MC infection was documented at baseline and follow-up visits. Of the 31 children enrolled in the study, 26 completed treatment and returned for control visits. Spirularin® VS cream was applied twice daily over a period of 1 to 9 months (mean treatment duration 3.9 months). 19/26 (73.1%) children achieved complete clearance of MC lesions with no clinical evidence of bacterial skin infection during treatment. No irritative skin reactions or unpleasant symptoms were observed or reported. This open-label observational study suggests that a cream formulation containing 1.5% Ca-SP and 1% Spiralin® may be an effective and safe treatment option for children with active MC lesions. The high rate of complete clearance of MC lesions and lack of adverse reactions warrant further investigation in larger, controlled trials.

Evolutionary potential ofthe monkeypox genome arising from interactions with human APOBEC3 enzymes.

APOBEC3, an enzyme subfamily that plays a role in virus restriction by generating mutations at particular DNA motifs or mutational 'hotspots', can drive viral mutagenesis with host-specific preferential hotspot mutations contributing to pathogen variation. While previous analysis of viral genomes from the 2022 Mpox (formerly Monkeypox) disease outbreak has shown a high frequency of C>T mutations at TC motifs, suggesting recent mutations are human APOBEC3-mediated, how emerging monkeypox virus (MPXV) strains will evolve as a consequence of APOBEC3-mediated mutations remains unknown. By measuring hotspot under-representation, depletion at synonymous sites, and a combination of the two, we analyzed APOBEC3-driven evolution in human poxvirus genomes, finding varying hotspot under-representation patterns. While the native poxvirus molluscum contagiosum exhibits a signature consistent with extensive coevolution with human APOBEC3, including depletion of TC hotspots, variola virus shows an intermediate effect consistent with ongoing evolution at the time of eradication. MPXV, likely the result of recent zoonosis, showed many genes with more TC hotspots than expected by chance (over-representation) and fewer GC hotspots than expected (under-representation). These results suggest the MPXV genome: (1) may have evolved in a host with a particular APOBEC GC hotspot preference, (2) has inverted terminal repeat (ITR) regions-which may be exposed to APOBEC3 for longer during viral replication-and longer genes likely to evolve faster, and therefore (3) has a heightened potential for future human APOBEC3-meditated evolution as the virus spreads in the human population. Our predictions of MPXV mutational potential can both help guide future vaccine development and identification of putative drug targets and add urgency to the task of containing human Mpox disease transmission and uncovering the ecology of the virus in its reservoir host.

Laboratory assessment of a multi-target assay for the rapid detection of viruses causing vesicular diseases.

The recent mpox outbreak has highlighted the need to rapidly diagnose the causative agents of viral vesicular disease to inform treatment and control measures. Common causes of vesicular disease include Monkeypox virus (MPXV), clades I and II, Herpes simplex viruses Type 1 and Type 2 (HSV-1, HSV-2), human herpes virus 6 (HHV-6), Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and Enteroviruses (EVs). Here, we assessed a syndromic viral vesicular panel for rapid and simultaneous detection of these 7 targets in a single cartridge. The aim of this study was to evaluate the QIAStat-Dx ® viral vesicular (VV) panel and compare with laboratory developed tests (LDTs). Limit of detection, inter-run variability, cross-reactivity and specificity were assessed. Positive and negative percent agreement, and correlation between assays was determined using 124 clinical samples from multiple anatomical sites. The overall concordance between the QIAstat and LDTs was 96%. Positive percent agreement was 82% for HHV-6, 89% for HSV-1 and 100% for MPXV, HSV-2, EV and VZV. Negative percent agreement was 100% for all targets assessed. There was no cross-reactivity with Vaccinia, Orf, Molluscum contagiosum viruses, and a pooled respiratory panel. The QIAstat VV multi-target syndromic panel combine ease of use, rapid turnaround, good sensitivity and specificity for enhanced diagnosis, clinical care and public health responses.

Phenotypic and Endotypic Determinants of Atopic Dermatitis Severity From the Atopic Dermatitis Research Network (ADRN) Registry.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition with a highly variable clinical phenotype. This study aimed to identify historical and clinical features and biomarkers associated with AD severity. A US registry of extensively phenotyped AD participants (aged 0.73-80 years) were enrolled at 9 academic centers. Information on family and personal medical history, examination, skin swabs (culture), and serum biomarkers was collected to evaluate their association with AD severity. Participants with AD (N= 2862) whose disease was categorized as mild (11.6%), moderate (58.0%), or severe (30.4%) based on Rajka-Langeland scoring were enrolled. The trend test, when adjusting for gender, race, and age, demonstrated that severity was strongly (P ≤ .04) associated with a personal/family history of allergic disorders, history of alopecia, exposure to passive smoke, ocular herpes infection, skin bacterial and viral infections, and history of arrhythmia. Features observed more frequently (P ≤ .002), as a function of severity, included skin infections (impetigo, human papillomavirus, and molluscum contagiosum virus), Staphylococcus aureus colonization, excoriations, hyperlinear palms, ichthyosis, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, ectropion, and wheezing. Serum IgE, allergen and food (≤6 years) Phadiatop, and eosinophilia were strongly linked to severity (P < .001). In a diverse US AD population, severity was associated with a history of atopic disorders, skin and extracutaneous bacterial and viral infections (by history and physical examination), higher IgE, eosinophilia and allergen sensitization, atopic skin manifestations (ie, excoriation, hyperlinear palms, and ichthyosis), and atopic ocular features (ie, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and ectropion) as well as asthma findings (ie, wheezing). Data from our prospective registry significantly advance our understanding of AD phenotypes and endotypes, which is critical to achieve optimal management.

A Comprehensive Review on HIV-Associated Dermatologic Manifestations: From Epidemiology to Clinical Management.

Dermatological disorders are among the most prevalent manifestations of HIV infection/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). In this review, we aimed to characterize the various dermatologic presentations among HIV-infected patients with a detailed categorization of the mucocutaneous signs and symptoms, their etiopathogenic factors, and clinical management. In fact, cutaneous manifestations of HIV are quite various, ranging from AIDS-specific skin eruptions (xerosis, pruritic papular eruptions, eosinophilic folliculitis, and acne), opportunistic infections (herpes simplex, molluscum contagiosum, cutaneous leishmaniasis, bacillary angiomatosis, disseminated histoplasmosis, disseminated cryptococcosis, and zoster) to AIDS-related malignancies (Kaposi's sarcoma, lymphoma, and nonmelanoma skin cancers) and antiretroviral therapy (ART)-associated drug eruptions. We tried to classify HIV-related cutaneous presentations which can help clinicians for a better understanding of the various specific and nonspecific features of AIDS-associated cutaneous manifestations and management of the condition.

When the population of an endangered marine mollusc (Patella ferruginea) increases almost three-fold in ten years. Reality or fiction?

The critically endangered species Patella ferruginea (Gastropoda, Patellidae), endemic to the western Mediterranean, has breeding populations in both natural and artificial habitats, the latter of which are generally linked to port infrastructures. Over the past decade, the temporal change of this species’ population has been monitored (structure and density) using exhaustive censuses along Ceuta’s coast (Strait of Gibraltar), one of the few stronghold populations within the entire Mediterranean basin. This study focuses on the population dynamics of P. ferruginea in Ceuta and the environmental factors that affect the structure of this population, such as wave exposure, coastline heterogeneity, substratum roughness, substratum lithology, and chlorophyll-a concentration. Different potential negative interactions were also considered: angling, shell fishing, bathing in the intertidal, bathing near the intertidal, recreational boating and temporary migrant campsites nearby. The results have shown in the period 2011-2021, the estimated size of P. ferruginea population has increased by 200 %, from 55,902 to 168,463 individuals (of which 131,776 are adults). The subpopulation with the greatest increase in these years was the one settled on dolomitic rip-raps inside the Ceuta’s harbor, with an increase of 1,288%. The results of the present study indicate that Ceuta hosts the main population of this endangered species through its distributional range (Western Mediterranean), being a source population on the Southern Iberian Peninsula that its preservation must be prioritized. Statistical modelling has shown that the adult density of P. ferruginea is positively influenced by coastal heterogeneity, habitat area and substratum roughness, but negatively by vertical inclination, concentration of chlorophyll-a, and anthropogenic impact. These results also support the concept of ¨Artificial Marine Micro-Reserves¨ as a new area-based conservation measure according with the IUCN guidelines, as these will contribute to setting up a network of these source populations that promote genetic flow among populations, with eventual recolonization throughout its original distribution.

The structure and mechanism of action of a distinct class of dicistrovirus intergenic region IRESs.

Internal ribosomal entry sites (IRESs) engage with the eukaryotic translation apparatus to promote end-independent initiation. We identified a conserved class of ∼150 nt long intergenic region (IGR) IRESs in dicistrovirus genomes derived from members of the phyla Arthropoda, Bryozoa, Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Entoprocta, Mollusca and Porifera. These IRESs, exemplified by Wenling picorna-like virus 2, resemble the canonical cricket paralysis virus (CrPV) IGR IRES in comprising two nested pseudoknots (PKII/PKIII) and a 3'-terminal pseudoknot (PKI) that mimics a tRNA anticodon stem-loop base-paired to mRNA. However, they are ∼50 nt shorter than CrPV-like IRESs, and PKIII is an H-type pseudoknot that lacks the SLIV and SLV stem-loops that are primarily responsible for the affinity of CrPV-like IRESs for the 40S ribosomal subunit and that restrict initial binding of PKI to its aminoacyl (A) site. Wenling-class IRESs bound strongly to 80S ribosomes but only weakly to 40S subunits. Whereas CrPV-like IRESs must be translocated from the A site to the peptidyl (P) site by elongation factor 2 for elongation to commence, Wenling-class IRESs bound directly to the P site of 80S ribosomes, and decoding begins without a prior translocation step. A chimeric CrPV clone containing a Wenling-class IRES was infectious, confirming that the IRES functioned in cells.

Shape, Microstructure, and Chemical Composition of Pearls from the Freshwater Clam Diplodon chilensis Native to South America.

The capability to produce pearls is widespread in the phylum Mollusca, including bivalves of the superfamily Unionoidea. Here, we identified and characterized natural pearls formed by Diplodon chilensis, a freshwater clam native to southern South America, using samples obtained from two lakes located in the Chilean Patagonia. Pearls were studied using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy. Naturally formed pearls were found in both male and female D. chilensis specimens. Pearls are produced in different shapes, including spherical, ellipsoidal, buttoned, and bumpy, ranging in size from 200 µm to 1.9 mm. The internal microstructure is composed of irregular polygonal tablets, about 0.40 to 0.55 μm in thickness. EDX analysis showed that pearls are composed of calcium carbonate. FTIR and Raman spectra recorded several peaks attributable to the aragonite in pearls of this species, as has been shown in other mollusks. In addition to these results, pearls of different colors are illustrated.
