New method for the determination of the quantum yields in the photo-isomerization of photochromic epoxydiarylindanones

A method for the determination of the quantum yield in the formation of the unstable photoinduced form of 2, 3-epoxy-2, 3-diphenylindanone based on the reaction with tetracyanoethylene is proposed. The products of 1,3-dipolar addition of tetracyanoethylene to the photoinduced forms of the investigated compounds were isolated and characterized.

Regulation of photochromic properties of fast-relaxing spiropyrans in polymer films

When an indoline spiropyran (SPP) with electron-donor substituents in the chromene part of the molecule is introduced into a polymer matrix, in particular into copolymers of methyl methacrylate with oxyethyl methacrylate, there is a decrease in the rate of reaction of dark decolorization of the photoinduced form of the SPP, owing to interaction of the proton-donor units of the oxyethyl methacrylate and the oxygen of the chromene heterocycle of the photoinduced form of the SPP molecule, leading to the formation of an intermolecular hydrogen bond.

Polarization of the fluorescence of isomers of the photoinduced form of a nitro-substituted spiropyran at low temperatures

Polarization fluorescence spectra of the photoinduced form of 1,3,3-trimethyl-6′-nitrospiro(indoline-2,2′0[1(2H)]-benzopyran) have been measured in petroleum ether at 77 and 113°K and the angles between the oscillators of the two electronic transitions have been determined. 2. Irradiation of the solution at 77°K leads to the formation of a cis-cisoid isomer of the open form of the spiropyran, which, with a rise in the temperature, passes into the most stable stereoisomer of the colored form.

Nonlinear coloration of photochromic spiropyran solutions

An investigation was made of the two-photon photochromism of spiropyran solutions subjected to ruby laser radiation. The two-photon absorption cross section of spiropyran was calculated. At high laser radiation intensities the dependence of the optical density of the photoinduced form of spiropyran on the incident radiation intensity deviated from the square law. The cause of this deviation was considered.
