Comparison of three calibration techniques for utilization of GER 63-channel aircraft scanner data of Makhtesh Ramon, Negev, Israel : E. Ben-Dor, F. A. Kruse, A. B. Lefkoff & A. Banin, Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing, 60(11), 1994, pp 1339–1354

Geophysical Environmental Research (GER) 63-channel aircraft scanner data were used to map the mineralogy at Makhtesh Ramon in the Negev area of southern Israel. The data were calibrated to apparent reflectance using three techniques; the flat field (FF) method, the empirical line (EL) method, and the internal average relative reflectance (IARR) method. Results of these calibrations were evaluated by extracting image spectra and comparing them to library spectra for pure minerals and to laboratory spectra of samples collected from the field area. These comparisons show that each calibration method produces apparent reflectance spectra that contain useful mineralogical information. Care must be taken, however, to avoid over interpretation, as all of these calibrations may produce spectral artifacts

GIS-based habitat modeling using logistic multiple regression: a study of the Mt Graham red squirrel: J. M. C. Pereira & R. M. Itami, Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing, 57(11), 1991, pp 1475–1486

Multivariate statistical techniques were applied to the development of habitat suitability models for the Mt. Graham red squirrel, an endangered species. A digital map database and a Geographic Information System (GIS) were used to support the analysis and provide inputs for two logistic multiple regression models. The models attempted to predict squirrel presence or absence, the dichotomous dependent variable. Independent variables were a set of envi- ronmental factors in the first model, and locational coordinates in the second case, where a logistic trend surface was developed. Bayesian statistics were then used to integrate the models into a combined outcome. Potential habitat losses resulting from development of an astronomical observatory were assessed using the environmental model and were found to represent about 3 percent of the currently available habitat.

Numerical photogrammetry for the survey of the leaning tower of Pisa

This paper relates to the photogrammetric engineering survey of the famous Tower of Pisa. The aim was to determine the shape and spatial position of the successive orders making up the Tower by the digital plotting of a large number of equally spaced characteristic points. In this way we obtained a data base of 9480 points which after processing led to the determination of various constructional elements.

The possibility of the present living space is chainging into the direction in which we create the functional and humanistic space while so far in which we create the economic one. And the progress of mechanical engineering makes it realizable today. Besides, the aspect of planning presents these condition in which plan drawings visuarized by computer owing to its progress are taken out, while so far computer has been used only for calculation.In this paper, we inquire the future direction about planning or design in civil engineering or land use plan. Contents of this paper are, first, how to transform aerial photograph into numerical terrain infomation, second, how to transform it into visual form and last, how to make it possible for engineer to comunicate with macine for plan or design of residential area.

Mr J. R. L. A llen said that the author had pointed out that in the North Sea sand waves appeared only in areas where the tidal currents exceeded a certain maximum velocity. Recently, Simons, Richardson & Albertson (1961) had shown that, under experimental conditions using medium sand, the appearance of ‘dunes’ or sand waves was dependent both on depth of water and rate of flow; the sand waves appeared on the bed of their flume when the Froude number for the flow was between about 0.38 and 0.60. Had the author been able to establish a similar criterion for the sand waves of the North Sea? Dr J. V. H epworth said that the bottom structures described would no doubt be of great interest to sedimentologists. He, and perhaps other Fellows, had found some difficulty in assimilating the unfamiliar form in which the echo-ranger presented its results. What were its limits? Did it portray only the general shape of the sand waves and ribbons or was it capable of measuring the more familiar small-scale structures such as ripple-marks? He had been impressed by the results achieved in the United States by Hale and Cook (Hale, W. B. & Cook, C. E. 1962. Photogrammetric Engineering, 28, pp. 96–8) who, using twin cameras and photogrammetric methods, had photographed and contoured, at intervals of a few millimetres, bottom structures at a depth of 8000 ft. He understood that the author had used underwater television and photography and he would be interested

<title>Image Displacements on a Tilted Panoramic Photograph</title>

There are three image displacements inherent in aerial photogz-raphy which are not present in the more conventional frame and strip record. They are: 1) panoramic distortion arising from the cylindrical format, 2) sweep motion displacement due to the movement of the aircraft and 3) image motion compensation displacements caused by the changing positions of the lens relative to the film during sweep. This paper presents a derivation of the latter two displacements, and in addition derives the necessary image motion compensation (IMC) velocity or blur distance for cameras with no IMC. The case considered is the camera intentionally tilted in the direction of flight. For the vertical camera the derivation of these displace-ments has previously been published in Photogrammetric Engineering and is therefore not included.

Photogrammetric Engineering and Reservoir Planning

By using the precise measuring equipment available through and for Photogrammetric Engineering, a complete reservoir site study may be economically and comprehensively effected in a minimum time. The guidance of the professional in programmetry is essential from the first system design through final accomplishment. Equipment available and applicable are the fine aerial cameras, theodolites electronic distance measuring devices, coordinate measuring stereophotogrammetric equipment, data recording devices, electronic computers, processers, and plotters. Using these tools and the services of trained professionals and technicians in their respective phases of work aerial photographs through interpretation permit drainage area determination, soils typing, geologic land form determination, land use, cover dam site selection topographic mapping, property mapping and evaluation surveys, and subsequent systems design for service facility relocation, irrigation, power generation, flood control and real estate subdivision. The system described is based on property coordinated surveys with points paneled before photography and tied to the state standard system. Coordinates of objects in the photographs may be obtained photogrammetrically and processed with electronic computers. Properly preserved points and records may be readily retrieved for subsequent use.

American Methods and Practice in Air Survey

THIS manual has been produced by the American Society of Photogrammetry, some sections having been previously published in Photogrammetric Engineering, the journal of the Society. The Society is a very active one, and its journal regularly provides valuable technical information. Its membership extends overseas, including some from Great Britain.
