A Different Perspective on Tuning the Photophysical and Photochemical Properties: The Influence of Constitutional Isomers in Group 6 Carbonyl Complexes with Pyridyl-Mesoionic Carbenes.

Exploring novel and existing design principles to tune the photochemical and photophysical properties of transition-metal complexes is an important goal in contemporary research. Here, we highlight the influence of constitutional isomers of pyridyl-1,2,3-triazolylidene mesoionic carbene (MIC) ligands on the photophysical and photochemical properties of the corresponding tetracarbonyl group 6 metal complexes (M = Cr, Mo, W). All new complexes [M(C-C)] presented herein incorporate a C-C linked pyridyl-MIC ligand and were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, and 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy. Detailed photophysical investigations reveal a single emission in the VIS region, which extends into the NIR with lifetimes of up to 3.5 μs in the solid state at lower temperatures. The quantum yields were determined for all three complexes, and, in particular, the W0 complex shows an unusually high quantum yield of 29% compared to the values of 0.02% obtained for the [M(C-N)] isomers investigated in earlier works. Beyond this, the investigated W0 complex also exhibits an emission at 717 nm in a fluid solution. The combination of luminescence and FTIR-step scan spectroscopy with theoretical calculations reveals an emissive 3MLCT state. Irradiation of the presented complexes leads to a clean cleavage of one axial CO ligand. A metastable 16 VE species with a vacant axial coordination site was detected in the solid state at low temperatures. In solution, the respective solvato complexes are formed. A dark reverse reaction is observed, as previously described for the [M(C-N)] analogues. The increased electron density induced by the C-C linked pyridyl-MIC ligand leads to an increased kinetic rate constant for the reformation of the starting species and is also reflected in the lower photodissociation quantum yields.

POPTARTS: A New Method to Determine Quantum Yields in a Molecular Beam.

A new technique is reported to determine absolute photodissociation quantum yields, ϕdiss, in a molecular beam. The technique relies on a molecule having two available product channels, where a species in channel A can be converted photolytically to a species in channel B. The relative decrease in the species from channel A and the relative increase in species from B provide a direct measure of the relative product yield of each channel, with no external calibration required. In the event that only channels A and B exist, or at least dominate, then the sum rule ϕA + ϕB = 1 can be used to convert relative quantum yields into absolute yields. The technique is demonstrated using the well-understood and characterized photochemistry of HCHO. Formaldehyde photolysis at wavelengths near 310 nm produces either H + HCO (channel A) or H2 + CO (channel B). HCO can then be photolyzed with high efficiency into H + CO. The product state distributions for HCO from channel A, CO from channel B, and CO from the secondary HCO photolysis event are all well-known; this is not a requirement but is utilized here to demonstrate the veracity of the technique. The zero-pressure quantum yields of HCO from HCHO photolysis via the 2341 and 2151 states of HCHO are determined to be 0.66 and 0.74, respectively, which are in excellent agreement with the established quantum yields at atmospheric pressure and support the conclusion that HCHO quantum yields at these photolysis energies are not pressure dependent.

Mechanistic and Kinetic Investigations of ON/OFF (Photo)Switchable Binding of Carbon Monoxide by Chromium(0), Molybdenum(0) and Tungsten(0) Carbonyl Complexes with a Pyridyl‐Mesoionic Carbene Ligand

This work tackles the photochemistry of a series of mononuclear Cr0, Mo0 and W0 carbonyl complexes containing a bidentate mesoionic carbene ligand of the 1,2,3‐triazol‐5‐ylidene type. FTIR spectroscopy, combined with density functional theory calculations, revealed a clean photo‐induced reaction in organic solvents (acetonitrile, pyridine, valeronitrile) to give mainly one photoproduct with monosubstitution of a carbonyl ligand for a solvent molecule. The highest photodissociation quantum yields were reached for the Cr0 complex under UV irradiation (266 nm). Based on previous investigations, the kinetics of the dark reverse reactions have now been determined, with reaction times of up to several hours in pyridine. Photochemical studies in the solid state (KBr matrix, frozen solution) also showed light‐induced reactivity with stabilization of the metastable intermediate with a free coordination site at very low temperature. The identified reactive species emphasizes a mechanism without ligand–sphere reorganization.

Photodissociation Dynamics of Nitric Oxide from N-Acetylcysteine- or N-Acetylpenicillamine-bound Roussin's Red Ester.

The photochemical release of nitric oxide (NO) from a NO precursor is advantageous in terms of spatial, temporal, and dosage control of NO delivery to target sites. To realize full control of the quantitative NO administration from photoactivated NO precursors, it is necessary to have detailed dynamical information on the photodissociation of NO from NO precursors. We synthesized two new water-soluble Roussin’s red esters (RREs), [Fe2(μ-N-acetylcysteine)2(NO)4] and [Fe2(μ-N-acetylpenicillamine)2(NO)4], which have five times longer lifetime than the well-known [Fe2(μ-cysteine)2(NO)4]. The photodissociation dynamics of NO from these RREs in water were investigated over a broad time range from 0.3 ps to 10 μs after excitation at 310 and 400 nm using femtosecond time-resolved infrared (IR) spectroscopy. When these RREs are excited, they either release one NO, producing a radical species deficient in one NO (R), [Fe2(μ-RS)2(NO)3], or relax into the ground state without photodeligation via an electronically excited intermediate state (M). R appears immediately after photoexcitation, suggesting that one NO is photodissociated faster than 0.3 ps. A certain fraction of R undergoes geminate recombination (GR) with NO with a time constant of 7–9 ps, while the remaining R competitively binds to the solvent. Solvent-bound R eventually bimolecularly recombines with NO with a rate constant of (1.3–1.6) × 108 M–1 s–1. For a given RRE molecule, the fractional yield of M (0.62–0.76) depends on the excitation wavelength (λex); however, the relaxation time of M (6 ± 1 ns) is independent of λex. Although the primary quantum yield of NO photodissociation (Φ1) was found to be 0.24–0.38, the final yield of NO suitable for other reactions (Φ2) was reduced to 0.14–0.29 due to the picosecond GR of the dissociated NO with R. Detailed photoexcitation dynamics of RRE can be utilized in the quantitative control of NO administration at a specific site and time, promoting pin-point usage of NO in chemistry and biology. We demonstrate that femtosecond IR spectroscopy combined with quantum chemical calculations is a powerful method for obtaining detailed dynamic information on photoactivated NO precursors such as Φ1 and Φ2, the GR yield, and secondary reactions of the nascent photoproducts, which are essential information for the design of efficient photoactivated NO precursors and their quantitative utilization.

Ab Initio and RRKM/Master Equation Analysis of the Photolysis and Thermal Unimolecular Decomposition of Bromoacetaldehyde

Bromoacetaldehyde (BrCH2CHO) is a major stable brominated organic intermediate of the bromine-ethylene addition reaction during the arctic bromine explosion events. Similar to acetaldehyde, which has been recently identified as a source of organic acids in the troposphere, it may be subjected to photo-tautomerization initially forming brominated vinyl compounds. In this study, we investigate the unimolecular reactions of BrCH2CHO under both photolytic and thermal conditions using high-level quantum chemical calculations and Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM)/master equation analysis. The unimolecular decomposition of BrCH2CHO takes place through 14 dissociation and isomerization channels along a potential energy surface involving eight wells. Under the assumption of singlet ground-state potential energy surface-dominated photodynamics, the primary photodissociation yields of BrCH2CHO are investigated under both collision-free and collision energy transfer conditions. At atmospheric pressure and under tropospheric actinic flux conditions at ground level, depending on the assumed collisional energy transfer parameter, 150 cm-1 < ⟨ΔEdown⟩ < 450 cm-1, 78-33% of BrCH2CHO undergoes direct photodissociation instead of collisional deactivation at an excitation wavelength of 320 nm. This is significantly higher than the 14% reported for acetaldehyde, hence indicating a strong effect of bromine substitution on the product photolysis yield that is related to additional favorable Br and HBr forming dissociation channels. In contrast to the overall photodissociation quantum yield, the relative branching fractions of the photodissociation products are less dependent on the collisional energy transfer parameter. For a representative value of ⟨ΔEdown⟩ = 300 cm-1 and an excitation wavelength of 320 nm, with 27% for C-C bond fission, 11% for C-Br bond fission, 7% for HBr elimination, and only below 2% each for a consecutive O-Br fission reaction and the photo-tautomerization channel yielding brominated vinyl alcohol, the photodissociation is markedly different from the acetaldehyde case. Finally, as brominated halogenated compounds are of interest for flame inhibition purposes, thermal multichannel unimolecular rate constants were calculated for temperatures in the range from 500 to 2000 K. At a temperature of 2000 K and ambient pressure, the two main reaction channels are the C-Br and C-C bond fissions, contributing 35 and 43% to the total reaction flux, respectively.

The primary photo-dissociation dynamics of lactate in aqueous solution: decarboxylation prevents dehydroxylation.

We study the primary photolysis dynamics of aqueous lactate induced by photo-excitation at λ = 200 nm. Our calculations indicate that both decarboxylation and dehydroxylation are energetically possible, but decarboxylation is favoured dynamically. UV pump - IR probe transient absorption spectroscopy shows that the photolysis is dominated by decarboxylation, whereas dehydroxylation is not observed. Analysis of the transient IR spectrum suggests that photo-dissociation of lactate primarily produces CO2 and CH3CHOH- through the lowest singlet excited state of lactate, which has a lifetime of τ = 11 ps. UV pump - VIS probe transient absorption spectroscopy of electrons from the dissociating lactate anion indicates that the anionic electron from the CO2˙- fragment is transferred to the CH3CHOH˙ counter radical during the decarboxylation process, and CO2˙- is consequently only observed as a minor photo-product. The photo-dissociation quantum yield after the full decay of the excited state is Φ(100ps) = 38 ± 5%.

Primary photodissociation mechanisms of pyruvic acid on S1: observation of methylhydroxycarbene and its chemical reaction in the gas phase.

Pyruvic acid, a representative alpha-keto carboxylic acid, is one of the few organic molecules destroyed in the troposphere by solar radiation rather than by reactions with free radicals. To date, only its stable final products were identified, often with contribution from secondary chemistry, making it difficult to elucidate photodissociation mechanisms following excitation to the lowest singlet excited-state (S1) and the role of the internal hydrogen bond in the most-stable Tc conformer. Using multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry we report the first direct experimental evidence, via the observation of singlet methylhydroxycarbene (MHC) following 351 nm excitation, supporting the decarboxylation mechanism previously proposed. Decarboxylation to MHC + CO2 represents 97-100% of product branching at 351 nm. We observe vinyl alcohol and acetaldehyde, which we attribute to isomerization of MHC. We also observe a 3 ± 2% yield of the Norrish Type I photoproducts CH3CO + DOCO, but only from d1-pyruvic acid. At 4 Torr pressure, we measure a photodissociation quantum yield of 1.0+0-0.4, consistent with IUPAC recommendations. However, our measured product branching fractions disagree with IUPAC. In light of previous calculations, these results support a mechanism in which hydrogen transfer on the S1 excited state occurs at least partially by tunneling, in competition with intersystem crossing to the T1 state. We present the first evidence of a bimolecular reaction of MHC in the gas phase, where MHC reacts with pyruvic acid to produce a C4H8O2 product. This observation implies that some MHC produced from pyruvic acid in Earth's troposphere will be stabilized and participate in chemical reactions with O2 and H2O, and should be considered in atmospheric modeling.

Photochemical α-Cleavage Reaction of 3',5'-Dimethoxybenzoin: A Combined Time-Resolved Spectroscopy and Computational Chemistry Study.

Benzoin is one of the most commonly used photoinitiators to induce free radical polymerization. Here, improved benzoin properties could be accomplished by the introduction of two methoxy substituents, leading to the formation of 3’,5’-dimethoxybenzoin (DMB) which has a higher photo-cleavage quantum yield (0.54) than benzoin (0.35). To elucidate the underlying reaction mechanisms of DMB and obtain direct information of the transient species involved, femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) and nanosecond transient absorption (ns-TA) spectroscopic experiments in conjunction with density functional theory/time-dependent density functional theory (DFT/TD-DFT) calculations were performed. It was found that the photo-induced α-cleavage (Norrish Type I reaction) of DMB occurred from the nπ* triplet state after a rapid intersystem crossing (ISC) process (7.6 ps), leading to the generation of phenyl radicals on the picosecond time scale. Compared with Benzoin, DMB possesses two methoxy groups which are able to stabilize the alcohol radical and thus result in a stronger driving force for cleavage and a higher quantum yield of photodissociation. Two stable conformations (cis-DMB and trans-DMB) at ground state were found via DFT calculations. The influence of the intramolecular hydrogen bond on the α-cleavage of DMB was elaborated.

Light‐Driven Proton Release of Spirobenzopyran‐Derived Protonated Photomerocyanine in Cyclodextrin Aqueous Solution

AbstractProtonated photomerocyanine (PMCH), which is a ring‐opening isomer of spirobenzopyran, functions as a metastable‐state photoacid (PAH) driven by blue or visible light. Enhancement of the proton photodissociation efficiency and thermal stability of the deprotonated isomer facilitates pH adjustments and control by light irradiation. In this article, we report the proton photodissociation of PMCH based on 1,3,3‐trimethylindolino‐8’‐methoxybenzopyrylospiran (1) in an aqueous cyclodextrin (CD) solution. In the aqueous solution, the spirobenzopyran form of 1 underwent a spontaneous ring‐opening reaction and formed the thermodynamically stable PMCH form of 1 (PMCH‐1). After a laser flash at 355 nm, the photomerocyanine form of 1 (PMC‐1) was generated by proton photodissociation from the singlet excited state of PMCH‐1. The quantum yield of the proton photodissociation was changed by the stoichiometry or binding constant of the inclusion complex between PMCH‐1 and CD. Additionally, the encapsulation effects of CD inhibited the re‐protonation of PMC‐1. We conclude that these findings are useful for pH adjustment and control using PAHs based on PMCH.

Mechanism and bottlenecks in strand photodissociation of split green fluorescent proteins (GFPs)

Split GFPs have been widely applied for monitoring protein-protein interactions by expressing GFPs as two or more constituent parts linked to separate proteins that only fluoresce on complementing with one another. Although this complementation is typically irreversible, it has been shown previously that light accelerates dissociation of a noncovalently attached β-strand from a circularly permuted split GFP, allowing the interaction to be reversible. Reversible complementation is desirable, but photodissociation has too low of an efficiency (quantum yield <1%) to be useful as an optogenetic tool. Understanding the physical origins of this low efficiency can provide strategies to improve it. We elucidated the mechanism of strand photodissociation by measuring the dependence of its rate on light intensity and point mutations. The results show that strand photodissociation is a two-step process involving light-activated cis-trans isomerization of the chromophore followed by light-independent strand dissociation. The dependence of the rate on temperature was then used to establish a potential energy surface (PES) diagram along the photodissociation reaction coordinate. The resulting energetics-function model reveals the rate-limiting process to be the transition from the electronic excited-state to the ground-state PES accompanying cis-trans isomerization. Comparisons between split GFPs and other photosensory proteins, like photoactive yellow protein and rhodopsin, provide potential strategies for improving the photodissociation quantum yield.

Estimating the photodissociation quantum yield from PLP-SEC peak heights

A fast method for the reliable estimation of the photodissociation quantum yield Φdiss is presented. Pulsed laser polymerization (PLP) experiments are performed at various pulse energies (1.5–6 mJ) and regression analysis is performed to the ratio of the peak heights identified in the size exclusion chromatography (SEC) trace. The high accuracy of the method is demonstrated for PLP initiated by 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (DMPA), considering in silico generated data including large theoretical errors (up to 20%). The method has also been successfully applied to experimental data of DMPA based isothermal PLP of n-butyl acrylate at 306 K, with an estimated Φdiss of 0.42 ± 0.04. In the long term, the method will facilitate the evaluation of current and the design of new highly efficient photoinitiators.

Experimental and Theoretical Study on the OH-Reaction Kinetics and Photochemistry of Acetyl Fluoride (CH3C(O)F), an Atmospheric Degradation Intermediate of HFC-161 (C2H5F).

The direct reaction kinetic method of low pressure fast discharge flow (DF) with resonance fluorescence monitoring of OH (RF) has been applied to determine rate coefficients for the overall reactions OH + C2H5F (EtF) (1) and OH + CH3C(O)F (AcF) (2). Acetyl fluoride reacts slowly with the hydroxyl radical, the rate coefficient at laboratory temperature is k2(300 K) = (0.74 ± 0.05) × 10(-14) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) (given with 2σ statistical uncertainty). The temperature dependence of the reaction does not obey the Arrhenius law and it is described well by the two-exponential rate expression of k2(300-410 K) = 3.60 × 10(-3) exp(-10500/T) + 1.56 × 10(-13) exp(-910/T) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1). The rate coefficient of k1 = (1.90 ± 0.19) × 10(-13) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) has been determined for the EtF-reaction at room temperature (T = 298 K). Microscopic mechanisms for the OH + CH3C(O)F reaction have also been studied theoretically using the ab initio CBS-QB3 and G4 methods. Variational transition state theory was employed to obtain rate coefficients for the OH + CH3C(O)F reaction as a function of temperature on the basis of the ab initio data. The calculated rate coefficients are in good agreement with the experimental data. It is revealed that the reaction takes place predominantly via the indirect H-abstraction mechanism involving H-bonded prereactive complexes and forming the nascent products of H2O and the CH2CFO radical. The non-Arrhenius behavior of the rate coefficient at temperatures below 500 K is ascribed to the significant tunneling effect of the in-the-plane H-abstraction dynamic bottleneck. The production of FC(O)OH + CH3 via the addition/elimination mechanism is hardly competitive due to the significant barriers along the reaction routes. Photochemical experiments of AcF were performed at 248 nm by using exciplex lasers. The total photodissociation quantum yield for CH3C(O)F has been found significantly less than unity; among the primary photochemical processes, C-C bond cleavage is by far dominating compared with CO-elimination. The absorption spectrum of AcF has also been determined by displaying a strong blue shift compared with the spectra of aliphatic carbonyls. Consequences of the results on atmospheric chemistry have been discussed.

Infrared spectroscopy and 193 nm photochemistry of methylamine isolated in solid parahydrogen.

The in situ UV photolysis of a precursor molecule trapped in a parahydrogen (pH2) matrix is a simple method used to generate isolated radical photofragments that are well suited for infrared spectroscopic studies. However, for molecules that can dissociate via multiple pathways, little is known about how the pH2 matrix influences the branching among these open pathways. We report FTIR spectroscopic studies of the 193 nm photodecomposition of methylamine (MA, CH3NH2) isolated in pH2 quantum matrixes at 1.8 K. We observe single exponential decay of the MA precursor upon irradiation and the quantum yield for MA photodissociation is measured to be Φ = 0.26(2) consistent with a weak pH2 cage effect. By comparing to gas-phase results, we show the in situ photolysis results in greater production of molecular products (CH2═NH + H2) compared to radical products (CH3NH + H) consistent with the idea of partial caging of the H atom photofragments. The information gained in this work can be used to guide future photolysis studies in pH2 matrixes.

Impact of acetone (photo)oxidation on HOxproduction in the UT/LMS based on CARIBIC passenger aircraft observations and EMAC simulations

Until a decade ago, acetone was assumed to be a dominant HOx source in the dry extra-tropical upper troposphere (ex-UT). New photodissociation quantum yields of acetone and the lack of representative data from the ex-UT challenged that assumption. Regular mass spectrometric observations onboard the Civil Aircraft for the Regular Investigation of the atmosphere Based on an Instrument Container (CARIBIC) passenger aircraft deliver the first representative distribution of acetone in the UT/LMS (UT/lowermost stratosphere). Based on diverse CARIBIC trace gas data and non-observed parameters taken from the model ECHAM5/MESSy for Atmospheric Chemistry, we quantify the HOx source in the UT/LMS from (photo)oxidation of acetone. The findings are contrasted to HOx production from ozone photolysis, overall the dominant tropospheric HOx source. It is shown that HOx production from acetone (photo)oxidation reaches up to 95% of the HOx source from ozone photolysis in autumn in the UT and on average ~61% in summer. That is, acetone is a significant source of HOx in the UT/LMS.

VUV and mid-UV photoabsorption cross sections of thin films of adenine: Application on its photochemistry in the solar system

The photochemistry of an organic compound in extraterrestrial environments is related to its photoabsorption cross sections in the VUV/UV range (<300nm). Such data, especially in the VUV range (<200nm) are quite scarce in the literature. This paper presents an experimental setup and associated methodology to measure VUV/UV spectra of thin films of organic molecules. The case of adenine is extensively discussed as an example study. The absorption cross sections spectrum of adenine between 115 and 300nm is measured from transmission measurements and accurate calculation of the thickness of our samples set thanks to interferometry techniques and infrared spectrometry. From these data, the infrared integrated band strength of solid adenine between 3600 and 1970cm−1 has also been measured and is equal to 7.9×10–16±4%cmmolecule−1. The use of the VUV/UV spectrum to estimate the photolysis rate constant is discussed and compared to direct kinetic measurements available in the literature for low Earth orbit experiments. However the lack of measurements of the photodissociation quantum yield as a function of the wavelength prevents a precise calculation. VUV/UV cross section spectrum is yet a necessity to conduct either proper kinetic studies on optically thin samples (less than 2nm in the VUV for adenine) or an appropriate modeling for optically thick samples.

Enhanced Surface Partitioning of Nitrate Anion in Aqueous Bromide Solutions.

The proximity of nitrate anions to the air-water interface is thought to strongly influence their photodissociation quantum yield, due to a reduced solvent cage effect at the water surface. Although nitrate in aqueous solution exhibits little or no surface affinity, the release of gas phase NO2 (nitrate's primary photodissociation product) has been reported to be enhanced when halides, in particular bromide, are also present in solution. Here, we use glancing-angle Raman spectroscopy to investigate whether solutions containing both nitrate and halides show different propensities for nitrate at the air-water interface. We find that bromide enhances, and chloride has little effect on (or perhaps suppresses) the surface partitioning of nitrate anions.

Modification of organosilicate glasses low-k films under extreme and vacuum ultraviolet radiation

Degradation of chemical composition of porous low-k films under extreme and various vacuum ultraviolet emissions is studied using specially developed sources. It is shown that the most significant damage is induced by Xe line emission (147 nm) in comparison with Ar (106 nm), He (58 nm), and Sn (13.5 nm) emissions. No direct damage was detected for 193 nm emission. Photoabsorption cross-sections and photodissociation quantum yields were derived for four films under study. 147 nm photons penetrate deeply into low-k films due to smaller photoabsorption cross-section and still have sufficient energy to excite Si-O-Si matrix and break Si-CH3 bonds.

Quantum yields and photodissociation coefficients of acetaldehyde in the troposphere

The experimental data available for the photodissociation quantum yields of acetaldehyde are evaluated to derive formal expressions for their dependence on wavelength and pressure. The formulae are used to calculate the photodissociation coefficient of acetaldehyde as a function of altitude in the troposphere. The processes active in the photodecomposition of acetaldehyde are comparable to those in acetone, but the photodissociation coefficients of acetaldehyde (at room temperature) are six times greater. The dependence of the quantum yields on wavelength and pressure supports recent evidence of participation of both singlet and triplet states in the photodissociation process.

Kinetic Study of the Daytime Atmospheric Fate of (Z)-3-Hexenal

Rate coefficients for three daytime atmospheric reactions of (Z)-3-hexenal (3HA)-photolysis (J(1)), reaction with OH radicals (k(2)), and reaction with ozone (k(3))-were measured at 760 Torr and 298 K using a 6 m(3) photochemical reaction chamber. The UV absorption cross sections (σ(3HA)(λ)) were obtained in the wavelength range 240-350 nm. The photodissociation rate of 3HA relative to that of NO(2) was measured by a solar simulator at 760 Torr and was determined to be J(1)/J(NO2) = (4.7 ± 0.4) × 10(-3). Using the obtained σ(3HA)(λ) and J(1)/J(NO2), the effective photodissociation quantum yield was calculated to be Φ(3HA) = 0.25 ± 0.06. The rate coefficient for the reaction with OH radicals was measured by the relative rate method with three reference compounds and was determined to be k(2) = (6.9 ± 0.9) × 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1). The rate coefficient for the reaction with ozone was measured by an absolute method and was determined to be k(3) = (3.5 ± 0.2) × 10(-17) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1). Using the obtained rate coefficients, the daytime atmospheric lifetime of 3HA was estimated.

Photochemistry of Methyl Ethyl Ketone: Quantum Yields and S1/S0‐Diradical Mechanism of Photodissociation

Pulsed laser photolysis (PLP) at λ=248 and 308 nm coupled with gas-chromatographic analysis is applied to determine the photodissociation quantum yield (QY) of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK). Temperature dependent UV absorption cross-sections [σ(MEK)(λ,T)] are also determined. At 308 nm, the QY decreases with decreasing temperature (T=323-233 K) and with increasing pressure (P=67-998 mbar synthetic air). Stern-Volmer (SV) analysis of the T and P dependent QYs provides the experimental estimate of E(S1)=398±9 kJ mol(-1) (=300±6 nm) for the barrier of the first excited singlet state (S(1)). The QY at 248 nm is close to unity and independent of pressure (T=298 K). Theoretical reaction pathways are examined systematically on the basis of CASPT2/6-31+G* calculations. Among three possible pathways, a S(1)/S(0)-diradical mechanism, which involves H atom transfer on the S(1) surface, followed by a nonadiabatic transition at a diradical isomer of MEK, explains the experimental data very well. Therefore, this unusual mechanism, which is not seen in any smaller carbonyl compounds, is proposed as an important pathway for the MEK dissociation. Our study supports the view that both the absorption cross-sections and the QYs of carbonyls have significant temperature dependences that should be taken into account for accurate modelling of atmospheric chemistry.
