Temporal Phosphorus Dynamics in Shallow Eutrophic Lake Suwa, Japan

It can be difficult to decrease the water phosphorus (P) concentration in eutrophic shallow lakes, even if the external P loading is reduced, owing to a high level of internal P loading to surface water from sediment. However, in shallow Lake Suwa, Japan, lake water P concentration has largely decreased in recent years owing to low levels of internal P loading, as well as declining external P loading. We measured water/sediment P and iron (Fe) concentrations and the P release rate from sediment in Lake Suwa, and then compared it with data from the 1970s. In the 1970s, the P concentration throughout the lake water was high during the hypoxic period. Recently, however, the P concentration has increased only in the hypolimnion during the hypoxic period. This suggests that internal P loading from sediment to surface water has largely been suppressed during the hypoxic period in recent years. This may be due to (i) stronger water stratification from global warming, (ii) a greater decrease in the P release rate from the sediment owing to a decline in sediment P concentration from the 1970s to 2020, and (iii) stronger formation of the Fe–P cycle in Lake Suwa recently, compared with that in the 1970s. Our results indicated the need to reduce both external P loading, and internal P loading from sediment to water, for effective water quality improvement in shallow lakes.

Ferric- and calcium-loaded red soil assist colonization of submerged macrophyte for the in-situ remediation of eutrophic shallow lake: From mesocosm experiment to field enclosure application

Eutrophication and its resulting harmful algal blooms greatly reduce the ecosystem services of natural waters. The use of modified clay materials to assist the phytoremediation of eutrophic water is a promising technique. In this study, ferric chloride and calcium hydroxide were respectively loaded on red soil for algal flocculation and phosphorus inactivation. A two-by-two factorial mesocosm experiment with and without the application of ferric- and calcium- loaded red soil (FA), and with and without planting the submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans was conducted for the in-situ repair of eutrophic water and sediment. Furthermore, field enclosure application was carried out to verify the feasibility of the technology. At the end of the mesocosm experiment, the total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and ammonia nitrogen concentrations in water were reduced by 81.8 %, 63.3 %, and 62.0 %, respectively, and orthophosphate phosphorus concentration in the sediment-water interface decreased by 90.2 % in the FA + V. natans group compared with those in the control group. The concentration and proportion of chlorophyll-a in cyanobacteria decreased by 89.8 % and 71.2 %, respectively, in the FA + V. natans group. The content of active phosphorus in V. natans decreased and that of inert phosphorus increased in the FA + V. natans group, compared with those in the V. natans alone group, thus may reducing the risk of phosphorus release after decomposing of V. natans. The sediment bacterial diversity index did not change significantly among treatments. Field enclosure application have also been successful, with chlorophyll-a concentration in the water of treated enclosure decreased from above 200 μg/L to below 10 μg/L, and phosphorus concentration in the water decreased from >0.6 mg/L to <0.02 mg/L. These results demonstrated that the FA in combination with submerged macrophyte planting had great potential for the in-situ remediation of eutrophic water, especially those with severe algal blooms.

Multiple stressors mediate the effects of warming on leaf decomposition in a large regulated river

AbstractPredicting how increasing temperatures interact with other global change drivers to influence the structure and dynamics of Earth's ecosystems is a primary challenge in ecology. Our study made use of multiple simultaneous “natural experiments” to examine how rapid warming, declining nutrients, invasive consumers, and riparian invasive species management interact to influence leaf decomposition in a large and regulated river. Specifically, we compared the breakdown of cottonwood (Populus fremontii), willow (Salix exigua), and saltcedar (Tamarix sp.) leaf litter in 2022 to a previous experiment from 1998 that occurred under much cooler water temperatures, and had higher water phosphorus concentrations, low numbers of invasive New Zealand mudsnails (Potamopyrgus antipodarum), and unaltered litter chemistry from the herbivory of saltcedar leaf beetles (Diorhabda carinulata). We found that the effects of up to 10°C warmer temperatures on leaf decomposition were mediated by the establishment and management of invasive species and declining water nutrient concentrations arising from upstream reservoir lowering. Such interactions led to accelerated breakdown of saltcedar, but relatively minor effects of warming on the rate of cottonwood and willow decomposition. Additionally, our results demonstrate the potential for favorable invasive species management outcomes in the terrestrial environment to produce unintended responses in adjacent freshwater ecosystems. As temperatures continue to rise, it is critical that future studies consider how warming interacts with multiple stressors and environmental factors to influence processes such as decomposition in freshwater ecosystems.

Nutrient transport, shear strength and hydraulic characteristics of topsoils amended with mulch, compost and biosolids

Anthropogenic disturbance of soils can disrupt soil structure, diminish fertility, alter soil chemical properties, and cause erosion. Current remediation practices involve amending degraded urban topsoils lacking in organic matter and nutrition with organic amendments (OA) to enhance vegetative growth. However, the impact of OAs on water quality and structural properties at rates that meet common topsoil organic matter specifications need to be studied and understood. This study tested three commonly available OAs: shredded wood mulch, leaf-based compost, and class A Exceptional Quality stabilized sewage sludge (or biosolids) for nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) water quality, soil shear strength, and hydraulic properties, through two greenhouse tub studies. Findings showed that nitrogen losses to leachate were greater in the biosolids amended topsoils compared to leaf-compost, mulch amended topsoils, and control treatments. Steady-state mean total nitrogen (N) concentrations from biosolids treatment exceeded typical highway stormwater concentrations by at least 25 times. Soil total N content combined with the carbon:nitrogen ratio were identified to be the governing properties of N leaching in soils. Study soils, irrespective of the type of amendment, reduced the applied (tap) water phosphorus (P) concentration of ∼0.3 mg-P/L throughout the experiment. Contrary to the effects on N leaching, P was successfully retained by the biosolids amendment, due to the presence of greater active iron contents. A breakthrough mechanism for P was observed in leaf compost amended soil, where the effluent concentrations of P continued to increase with each rainfall application, possibly due to an saturation of soil adsorption sites. The addition of OAs also improved the strength and hydraulic properties of soils. The effective interlocking mechanisms between the soil and OA surfaces could provide soil its required strength and stability, particularly on slopes. OAs also improved soil fertility to promote turf growth. Presence of vegetative root zones can further reinforce the soil and control erosion.

Interpretable CEEMDAN-FE-LSTM-transformer hybrid model for predicting total phosphorus concentrations in surface water

The complexity of the biogeochemical cycle of phosphorus in lakes makes it challenging to produce efficient and accurate predictions of total phosphorus (TP) concentrations. In this study, a hybrid model is developed for TP predictions. This model combines the Complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise, Fuzzy entropy, Long short-term memory, and Transformer (CF-LT). The introduction of data split-frequency reconstruction effectively solves the problems of over- and underfitting suffered by previous machine learning models in the face of high-dimensional data, while an attention mechanism overcomes the inability of these models to establish long-term dependencies between data when making long-term predictions. The CF-LT model is applied to predict TP concentrations from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2020, at Yaoxiangqiao, Zhihugang, and Guanduqiao, three national water quality monitoring stations at the inlet of Taihu Lake, China. Moreover, the Shapley additive explanations are used to interpret the CF-LT model and identify the essential input features. The prediction results demonstrate that the CF-LT model achieves a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.37–0.87 on the test dataset, representing an improvement of 0.05–0.17 (6%-85%) over the control models. In addition, the CF-LT model provides the best peak value predictions. The model interpretation results indicate that the turbidity and total nitrogen are the essential factors influencing TP predictions. This demonstrates that the TP concentrations at the inlet of Taihu Lake are closely related to the non-point pollution discharge and the status of aquatic plants. It's worth noting that these two indicators exert a more significant influence on the prediction of TP during wet season. This work provides a viable modeling strategy for predicting TP concentrations and guidance for early warning and treatment of surface water eutrophication in the Taihu Lake basin.

Multimetric socio‐ecological assessment of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart) solms) invasion of an urban Ramsar wetland lake

AbstractWater hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart) solms), a widely distributed invasive aquatic plant in Sri Lanka, has invaded the Diyawannawa wetland lake located in Colombo city, which is the first Ramsar wetland city in South Asia. The present study was conducted to assess the water quality parameters that influence the distribution of water hyacinth and to identify the environmental, economic, and social consequences of its invasion of the Diyawannawa wetland. Five sampling sites were selected from the Diyawannawa lake, and the water pH, temperature, conductivity, total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity, dissolved oxygen concentration (DO), nitrate concentration, and total phosphorus concentration were measured at monthly intervals in the rainy and dry seasons of 2020. The abundance of water hyacinth was recorded at each site at each sampling event. Interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted with the representatives of the community associated with the wetland to assess the ecological, economic and social effects of water hyacinth invasion. Principal component analysis of the water quality parameters revealed that phosphorus and nitrate concentrations in water significantly influenced the abundance of water hyacinth. Further, the water quality index (WQI) indicated poor water quality in the sites invaded by water hyacinth. The interviews and FGDs revealed that water hyacinth invasion has adversely affected the lake's fisheries and navigation pathways and increased the frequency of flooding, resulting in an increased mosquito population. The results of the present study highlighted the importance of implementing water quality management programmes in the Diyawannawa wetland to control the invasion of water hyacinth. Further, we recommend increasing community participation in water hyacinth control programmes and providing opportunities for the community to engage in self‐employment activities associated with the uses of water hyacinth.

Inactivation of phosphorus in a highly eutrophic pond using Zeofixer® to eliminate the free-floating aquatic plant (Spirodela polyrhiza)

Free-floating aquatic plants are important invasive alien species whose excessive growth strongly affects freshwater ecosystems and their ecological service functions worldwide. Due to their rapid reproduction rate and the difficulty in their removal using common methods, the management of these aquatic weeds is still challenging. In this study, we proposed a strategy to control giant duckweed (Spirodela polyrhiza) in a highly eutrophic pond by blocking the supply of phosphorus by greatly lowering the phosphorus concentration in water using Zeofixer®, a novel lanthanum-containing P-inactivation agent. We found that the application of Zeofixer® satisfactorily eliminated the aquatic weed from the study pond. Zeofixer® had a high affinity for phosphate with a maximum adsorption capacity of 21.19 mgP/g, and it reduced the concentration of dissolved inorganic P, which was the major form of P species in the pond, from 1.60 to 0.005 mg/L. Amendment of pond sediment with Zeofixer® greatly diminished the P concentration in water under either oxic or anoxic conditions, although the latter caused a great release of P from sediment when compared with the former. After Zeofixer® treatment, the releasable P fractions in the sediment were substantially converted to stable P fractions, enabling the inactivation of P and the retardation of future P release. In conclusion, the free-floating aquatic plants in bodies of water could be thoroughly and permanently controlled using P-inactivation agents.

Assessing the nonlinear association of environmental factors with antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the Yangtze River Mouth, China

The emergence of antibacterial resistance (ABR) is an urgent and complex public health challenge worldwide. Antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) are considered as a new pollutant by the WHO because of their wide distribution and emerging prevalence. The role of environmental factors in developing ARGs in bacterial populations is still poorly understood. Therefore, the relationship between environmental factors and bacteria should be explored to combat ABR and propose more tailored solutions in a specific region. Here, we collected and analyzed surface water samples from Yangtze Delta, China during 2021, and assessed the nonlinear association of environmental factors with ARGs through a sigmoid model. A high abundance of ARGs was detected. Amoxicillin, phosphorus (P), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), calcium (Ca), and strontium (Sr) were found to be strongly associated with ARGs and identified as potential key contributors to ARG detection. Our findings suggest that the suppression of ARGs may be achieved by decreasing the concentration of phosphorus in surface water. Additionally, Group 2A light metals (e.g., magnesium and calcium) may be candidates for the development of eco-friendly reagents for controlling antibiotic resistance in the future.

Yielding of aquaponics using probiotics to grow tomatoes with tilapia

Aquaponics is a cutting-edge technology where plants and fish are grown together in a close-loop re-circulating system. It is not feasible to use growth-promoting agents, such as pharmaceutical antibiotics, with this biological and ecologically friendly technology to prevent or treat fish diseases. Examination of different growth booster substances became necessary because of this, and probiotics are one potential solution. The purpose of this experiment was to figure out the effect of gut probiotics, water probiotics and biofloc inputs in aquaponics to grow tilapia and tomato. Tilapia was fed with 29.40% protein containing feed with the supplement of gut probiotics (AQ-GT), water additive probiotic (AQ-WT), combination of probiotics-molasses-yeast (AQ-BF) and without any probiotic supplement (AQ) as control in media-based aquaponics. The investigation was incorporated for 75 days with triplicates of each treatment. Water quality, tilapia and tomato plant were sampled at 15-days interval. Moreover, matured tomatoes were harvested regularly. The findings showed that the treatments differed significantly in terms of electric conductivity, dissolved solids, calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, boron, copper, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate concentration in tank water. The highest tomato flower was recorded in control (P < 0.01). On the other hand, the highest tomato and tilapia production were in AQ-BF (P < 0.01). The research findings revealed that biofloc technology (AQ-BF) significantly lower the feed conversion ratio and enhance the specific growth rate of tilapia than the other treatments. Moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, crude fiber, ash, and nitrogen free extract percentage in tilapia varied significantly among the treatments. Contrarily, statistical similarity among the treatments exists in terms of moisture, lipid, and ash content of tomato. The results indicate that, combination of biofloc technology with aquaponics is more viable for higher fish and vegetable production with favorable water quality than the other ways of probiotic inclusion in aquaponics.

Revealing the hidden burden for lake management: the sediment phosphorus storage pools in Eastern Plain Lake Zone, China.

As one of the essential components in ecosystems, lakes play a major role in the global phosphorus (P) cycle. It is helpful for further understanding of the inside lake P geochemical cycle to research P pollution and storage in lakes, which is of positive significance for lake eutrophication restoration. In this study, we investigated the total phosphorus concentrations (TPC) of water and sediments from 37 lakes in the Eastern Plain Lake Zone (EPL) of China, evaluated the P pollution degree of lakes, and estimated P storage in lake sediments with quantitative data of lake area and number. The results indicate that the total phosphorus concentrations of water (TPCW) and total phosphorus concentrations of the surface sediments (0-1cm, TPCSS) in EPL were high, the mean values were 0.11mg·L-1 and 869.85mg·kg-1 respectively, with obvious differences between urban and rural areas, as well as between different river basins. Over half (56.76% and 70.27% respectively) of the lakes reached severe pollution levels in water and surface sediments. There were 16224 lakes (> 0.01 km2) with a total area of 21662.37 km2 in the EPL, and the P storage in the lake sediments (0-30cm) was about 4.87 ± 2.08 Tg (1 Tg = 1 × 1012g), accounting for about 2.74% of the basin soil. TPCW and TPCSS of lakes in the EPL were significantly positively correlated, may suggest a close nutrient cycling relationship between the lake water and the sediment. During periods of high winds and waves, the stored P in the top sediments in the EPL may continue to participate in the internal P geochemical cycle and migrate to the overlying water, posing a potential pollution hazard. Therefore, it is crucial to take into account the sediment P pools when formulating effective lake phosphorus management strategies.

The role of bioturbation triggered by benthic macroinvertebrates in the effectiveness of the Floc & Lock technique in mitigating eutrophication

Anthropogenic activities have led to excessive loading of phosphorus and nitrogen into water bodies, leading to eutrophication and promoting the growth of cyanobacteria, posing a threat to the health of humans and aquatic animals. Techniques such as Floc & Lock have been developed to mitigate eutrophication by reducing phosphorus concentrations in water and preventing algal blooms. However, little attention has been given to the impact of phosphorus resuspension by sediment-associated organisms such as benthic macroinvertebrates, on the effectiveness of this technique. Here, we experimentally evaluated whether the presence of snails Melanoides tuberculata (Müller, 1774) and larvae of Chironomus sancticaroli (Strixino and Strixino, 1981) affects the efficiency of the Floc & Lock technique. Snails and chironomid larvae are benthic macroinvertebrates commonly found in high abundance in eutrophic reservoirs. Specifically, we tested the hypotheses that (i) the presence of benthic macroinvertebrates reduces the efficiency of coagulants and clays in removing phosphorus and algal biomass from the water column, and (ii) this effect is species-dependent, as some organisms such as the snails, revolve the substrate and resuspend sedimented particles, while other ones, such as chironomid larvae, aid in the removal of phosphorus from the water column by depositing them in the sediment. Our findings revealed that the impact of benthic macroinvertebrates on the effectiveness of the Floc & Lock technique is species-dependent. Chironomid larvae positively influenced the efficiency of the technique by aiding in the removal of total phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphorus, and algal biomass from the water column, depositing them in the sediment. In contrast, the presence of snails had the opposite effect, resulting in increased phosphorus concentration and algal biomass in the water. Surprisingly, the snails consumed the flocs formed by the coagulant and clay within a short time interval of 72 h, raising concerns due to the presence of toxic cyanobacterial biomass in these flocs. Our study emphasizes the importance of considering benthic macroinvertebrates and their impact on the effectiveness of eutrophication management techniques.

Model evaluation of total phosphorus prediction based on model accuracy and interpretability for the surface water in the river network of the Jiangnan Plain, China.

Due to climatic and hydrological changes and human activities, eutrophication and frequent outbreaks of cyanobacteria are prominent in the Jiangnan Plain basin of China. Therefore, building a suitable model to accurately predict the phosphorus concentration in surface water is of practical significance to prevent the above problems. This study built 10 models to predict the phosphorus element in the surface water of the river network in the Jiangnan Plain. The main water types in the basin include the Yangtze River, the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, and the Gehu Lake. The 10 models in different datasets have been comprehensively evaluated by the prediction accuracy and interpretability of the model, and the calculation of the partial dependence diagram (PDP) and SHAP has proved that there is a transparent response relationship between phosphorus and different factors. The results show that the Yangtze River, Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, and Gehu Lake are suitable for random forest, linear regression, and random forest models, respectively, under the comprehensive evaluation of the prediction accuracy and interpretability of the model. Models with low prediction accuracy often show strong interpretability. In different water body types, turbidity, water temperature, and chlorophyll-a are the three factors that affect the model in predicting phosphorus.

Nutrient runoff loss from saline-alkali paddy fields in Songnen Plain of Northeast China via different runoff pathways: effects of nitrogen fertilizer types.

The application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer aggravates the nutrient runoff loss from paddy, causing serious agricultural non-point source pollution, and leading to a serious decline in water quality. The global area of saline-alkali paddy has expanded, but the response of nutrient loss via runoff to N-fertilizer applications in saline-alkali paddy is still unclear. This study conducted a 147-day field experiment to evaluate the nutrient runoff loss from saline-alkali paddy with different N-fertilizer application strategies in Songnen Plain of Northeast China. Regardless of N-fertilizer types, the nutrient loss via rainfall runoff in the entire rice-growing season was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that via artificial drainage. The N and phosphorus (P) concentrations in runoff water were correlated with salinity and alkalinity. Especially, pH had a significant positive correlation with total-P (TP) (r = 0.658, p < 0.01). In the entire rice-growing season, the TN runoff losses in urea (U), microbial fertilizer (MF), and inorganic compound fertilizer (ICF) treatments were significantly (p < 0.05) lower compared with carbon-based slow-release fertilizer (CSF) and organic-inorganic compound fertilizer (OCF), respectively. Meanwhile, the TP runoff losses in OCF and ICF treatments were significantly (p < 0.05) lower than U and MF, respectively. Overall, the application of ICF is a better choice to avoid N and P losses via runoff from saline-alkali paddy fields.

Comparing Drivers of Spatial Variability in U.S. Lake and Stream Phosphorus Concentrations

AbstractDecision makers need to know the drivers of surface water phosphorus (P) concentrations, the environmental factors that mediate P loading in freshwater systems, and where pollution sources and mediating factors are co‐located to inform water quality restoration efforts. To provide this information, publicly available spatial data sets of P pollution sources and relevant environmental variables, like temperature, precipitation, and agricultural soil erodibility, were matched with &gt;7,000 stream and lake total P observations throughout the conterminous United States. Using three statistical approaches, consisting of (a) correlation, (b) regression, and (c) machine learning techniques, we identified likely drivers of P concentrations. Surface water concentrations in streams were more strongly correlated and effectively predicted by annual fertilizer and manure input rates and agricultural legacy sources compared to that of lakes. This observation suggests that streams may be more immediately responsive to improvements in agricultural nutrient management. In contrast, lake concentrations, though still positively associated with agricultural input and surplus variables, may be more influenced by historic erosional inputs, internal lake recycling, and other environmental factors. Thus, lake TP concentrations may not be as immediately responsive as streams to improvements in phosphorus management. Both stream and lake P concentrations will potentially increase because of warming temperatures and forest recovering from past acidification, putting even further pressure on existing water quality restoration efforts to meet nutrient loading reduction targets. The identified spatial data sets and relationships elucidated in this effort can inform the placement and development of watershed restoration strategies to reduce excess P in aquatic systems.

Comparison of dredging, lanthanum-modified bentonite, aluminium-modified zeolite, and FeCl2 in controlling internal nutrient loading

The eutrophic Bouvigne pond (Breda, The Netherlands) regularly suffers from cyanobacterial blooms. To improve the water quality, the external nutrient loading and the nutrient release from the pond sediment have to be reduced. An enclosure experiment was performed in the pond between March 9 and July 29, 2020 to compare the efficiency of dredging, addition of the lanthanum-modified bentonite clay Phoslock® (LMB), the aluminum-modified zeolite Aqual-P™ (AMZ) and FeCl2 to mitigate nutrient release from the sediment. The treatments improved water quality. Mean total phosphorus (TP) concentrations in water were 0.091, 0.058, 0.032, 0.031, and 0.030 mg P L-1 in controls, dredged, FeCl2, LMB and AMZ treated enclosures, respectively. Mean filterable P (FP) concentrations were 0.056, 0.010, 0.009, 0.005, and 0.005 mg P L-1 in controls, dredged, FeCl2, LMB and AMZ treatments, respectively. Total nitrogen (TN) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) were similar among treatments; lanthanum was elevated in LMB treatments, Fe and Cl in FeCl2 treatments, and Al and Cl in AMZ treatments. After 112 days, sediment was collected from each enclosure, and subsequent sequential P extraction revealed that the mobile P pool in the sediments had reduced by 71.4%, 60.2%, 38%, and 5.2% in dredged, AMZ, LMB, and FeCl2 treatments compared to the controls. A sediment core incubation laboratory experiment done simultaneously with the enclosure experiment revealed that FP fluxes were positive in controls and cores from the dredged area, while negative in LMB, AMZ and FeCl2 treated cores. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) release rate in LMB treated cores was 3.6 times higher than in controls. Overall, the applied in-lake treatments improved water quality in the enclosures. Based on this study, from effectiveness, application, stakeholders engagement, costs and environmental safety, LMB treatment would be the preferred option to reduce the internal nutrient loading of the Bouvigne pond, but additional arguments also have to be considered when preparing a restoration.

Phosphorus Adsorption in Water and Immobilization in Sediments by Lanthanum-modified Water Treatment Sludge Hydrochar

Using water treatment sludge and lanthanum chloride as raw materials, lanthanum-modified water treatment sludge hydrothermal carbon was prepared through one-step hydrothermal carbonization and loading lanthanum. SEM-EDS, BET, FTIR, XRD, and XPS were used to characterize the materials. The initial pH of the solution, adsorption time, adsorption isotherm, and adsorption kinetics were investigated to study the adsorption characteristics of phosphorus in water. The results showed that the specific surface area, the pore volume, and the pore size of the prepared materials were significantly increased, and the phosphorus adsorption capacity was greatly improved compared with that of the water treatment sludge. The adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the Langmuir model fitted the maximum phosphorus adsorption capacity to 72.69 mg·g-1. The main adsorption mechanisms were electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange. Adding lanthanum-modified water treatment sludge hydrochar into the sediment could effectively control the release of endogenous phosphorus from the sediment to the overlying water. According to the analysis of phosphorus forms in sediment, the addition of hydrochar promoted the transformation of unstable NH4Cl-P, BD-P and Org-P into the very stable HCl-P in the sediment, which reduced the content of potential active phosphorus and also significantly reduced the content of biologically available phosphorus. This indicated that lanthanum-modified water treatment sludge hydrochar could effectively adsorb and remove phosphorus in water and could also be used as sediment improvement material to effectively stabilize endogenous phosphorus in sediment and control phosphorus content in water.

Quantification of river total phosphorus using integrative artificial intelligence models

Total phosphorus (T-P) refers to the concentration of phosphorus in water and is one of the important parameters for eutrophication in lakes and rivers. In current research, neuroscience dependent (i.e., singular and double-platform synthetic) approaches were employed to predict the river T-P concentration. Singular techniques were developed utilizing machine learning based (support vector machines (SVMs), stochastic gradient boosting (SGB)), and deep learning based multilayer perceptron (DMLP) models. Besides, double-platform synthetic techniques were developed by integrating a prior data-processing (Discrete-wavelet) algorithm with the singular techniques. Six input scenarios conditional on different water quantity and quality parameters acquired from two stations (Hwangji and Toilchun), South Korea, were employed for appraising singular and double-platform synthetic techniques. The various promoted models were evaluated using four statistical standards viz., mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), scatter index (SI), and Pearson correlation coefficient (CCp), and four visual references viz., scatter diagram, box-and-whisker plot, violin plot, and Taylor diagram. It can be indicated from the outcomes that the double-platform synthetic techniques did not always lead to more accurate predictions than the singular techniques. Further, results also supplied that the SGB with the 6th input (MAE = 0.012 mg/L, RMSE = 0.014 mg/L, and CCp = 0.650 for Hwangji; MAE = 0.011 mg/L, RMSE = 0.017 mg/L, and CCp = 0.963 for Toilchun) scenario model demonstrated the best accuracy for predicting river T-P concentration by the singular techniques for both stations, whereas the discrete-wavelet SVMs with the 4th input (MAE = 0.007 mg/L, RMSE = 0.011 mg/L, and CCp = 0.765 for Hwangji) and discrete-wavelet SGB with the 5th input (MAE = 0.012 mg/L, RMSE = 0.017 mg/L, and CCp = 0.953 for Toilchun) scenario models provided the best predictive accuracy among double-platform synthetic techniques, respectively.

Comparative study of sediment phosphorus immobilization via the addition of lanthanum-modified and thermal-modified drinking water treatment sludge.

Lanthanum-modified drinking water treatment sludge (DTSLa) and thermal-modified drinking water treatment sludge (TDTS) were prepared from drinking water treatment sludge(DTS). The adsorption properties of DTSLa and TDTS on phosphate in water and the effects on the controlled release and morphology of phosphorus in sediment at different dosages (0%, 2.5%, 5%) were discussed. Combining with SEM, BET, XRD, FTIR, and XPS characterization methods, the immobilization mechanism of DTSLa and TDTS on phosphorus in sediment was explored. The addition of TDTS can transform NH4Cl-P (loosely sorbed P), BD-P (bicarbonate-dithionite extractable P), and Org-P (organic P) into stable NaOH-rP (metal oxide-bound P) in sediment, and the conversion amount will increase with the increase of TDTS supplemental amount. DTSLa converted NH4Cl-P, BD-P, Org-P, and NaOH-rP to more stable HCl-P (calcium-bound P). At the same time, the content of WSP (water-soluble phosphorus) and olsen-P (NaHCO3 extractable P) in sediment can be reduced by the addition of DTSLa and TDTS, reducing the risk of the release of phosphorus from the sediment to the overlying water. In addition, phosphorus can be directly removed from the interstitial water by DTSLa and TDTS, so as to reduce the phosphorus concentration gradient between the overlying water and the interstitial water, thus inhibiting the release of phosphorus from interstitial water to overlying water. The results showed that DTSLa is better than TDTS in terms of its adsorption capacity and adsorption effect on endogenous phosphorus in water, so DTSLa is more suitable to be used as a sediment conditioner to control the phosphorus content in water and sediment.

Aquatic phosphorus behaviour within a UK Ramsar wetland: Impacts of seasonality and hydrology on algal growth and implications for management

Fundamental to all life, phosphorus is an essential nutrient and, contrastingly, a significant threat to surface water biodiversity globally as one of the most common causes of eutrophication in surface waters worldwide. Freshwater wetland ditches affected by these conditions undergo a conversion from primarily submerged aquatic vegetation to algae or duckweed dominance, leading to anoxic conditions. However, macrophyte biomass harvesting in eutrophic water systems is a promising means of remediation and nutrient recycling. This study seasonally assesses spatial distribution and chemical fractionation of surface water phosphorus, as well as surface biomass abundance and total phosphorus content in the ditch systems at West Sedgemoor (Somerset, UK), a designated site of special scientific interest. Elevated phosphorus concentrations in the surface water were observed across the site, with all sites exceeding e hi the Common Standards Monitoring environmental quality standard value of 0.1 mg L−1 during summer and autumn Sites lacking hydrological flow connectivity with contaminated freshwater inputs, typically had lower surface water phosphorus concentrations than the rest of the moor, with localised hotspots associated with likely cattle related agricultural activity. Summer and autumn were determined as the dominant duckweed growth seasons, in which an estimated 39 kg of phosphorus could be removed via duckweed biomass harvesting, per harvest period.

Effect of Bacillus cereus mutant strain S458-M on active phosphorus and crucian carp in culture systems

Certain bacterial strains could efficiently improve the conversion of insoluble phosphorus to active phosphorus due to their phosphate-solubilizing ability, but there is little research on its specific effects on aquaculture. In this study, a mutant strain Bacillus cereus S458-M was obtained via compound mutagenesis of UV and LiCl. We found it exhibited higher phosphate-solubilizing ability and phytase activity than the original strain S458-1 reported in our previous report. The sequence analysis of phytase gene (phyC) in S458-M revealed mutations in amino acids 81, 89 and 148. Its predicted protein contained an additional Ca2+ binding site that might be associated with higher phytase activity. To verify phosphate-solubilizing and probiotic properties of S458-M, no bacteria (CG: control group), S458-1 (LS: 1 × 105 CFU/mL; HS: 1 × 107 CFU/mL) and S458-M (LM: 1 × 105 CFU/mL; HM: 1 × 107 CFU/mL) were supplemented into aquaculture water separately. The results showed that S458-M could improve the concentration of active phosphorus in aquaculture water and enhance the antioxidant ability of crucian carp. Overall, S458-M obtained by UV-LiCl mutagenesis could support the application of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria in aquaculture water.
