A philosophy of psychiatry as a medical specialty is presented in general systems terms with an approach to goals and methods as developed at the Medical University of South Carolina. Emphasis is placed upon expectations and limitations in psychiatry, its place in other health care systems, and the distinction between education and training. The subgoals given are suggested as universally applicable to psychiatry programs—basic understanding of man, competence in modification of adaptive systems, and personal growth of the professional self.
