Nitroxydes—LX: Isolement et autodecomposition du N-methyl N-tri-t-butyl-2,4,6 phenyl nitroxyde

N-methyl N-2,4,6-tri-t-butyl phenyl nitroxide is sufficiently stable to be isolated. It dimerises reversibly in solution; it decomposes to give N-methyl N-2,4,6 tri-t-butyl phenyl hydroxylamine and N-methylene 2,4,6-tri-t-butyl aniline N-oxide.

ESR Study of Phenyl Nitric Oxide Radical

Abstract ESR spectra were obtained for phenyl nitric oxide radicals derived from phenyl hydroxylamines by oxidation with benzoyl peroxide, and the variation of hyperfine splitting constants with solvent was examined. Hyperfine splitting constants of nitrogen and NH proton varied with the polarity and hydrogen-bonding nature of solvent. This variation was explained by molecular orbital theory where the Coulomb integral of oxygen atom is assumed to vary with solvent. The sigma-pi parameters, QNH (in aH(NH)=ρNQNH), QN and Qo (in aN=ρNQN+ρOQO), were determined from experimental splitting constants of nitrogen and NH proton and the spin density calculated by McLachlan’s method. The values QNH=27.5, QN=30.5 QO=−13.6 were obtained and the latter two values could be used to calculate the nitrogen hyperfine splitting constant for diphenyl nitric oxide radical.

Reactions of Hæmoglobin and its Derivatives with Phenyl Hydroxylamine and Nitrosobenzene

ON addition of a small amount of phenyl hydroxylamine (C6H5.NHOH) to a fresh alkaline solution of haematin prepared from haemin crystals, the colour of the solution turns rapidly from brown to bright red and its absorption band at about 630 mµ is replaced by two strong but somewhat diffuse bands at 562 mµ and 532 mµ. Two molecules of phenyl hydroxylamine per molecule of haematin are required for the complete formation of this new compound. Its instantaneous formation suggests in the first instance the view that in this reaction haematin combines directly with the phenyl hydroxylamine in the same way that it does with a variety of other nitrogenous substances. This view was not, however, supported by further experiments, which can be summarized as follows :
