This article discusses the phenomenon of language use by young people in the contemporary era. Through qualitative research combining pragmatic and sociolinguistic theories, we explore various aspects of the language used by young people today. The language used by young people today is a reflection of cultural changes and social trends that affect the way they communicate.In this article, we outline the variety and creativity found in youth language, including the use of slang words, popular terms. Our analysis includes the social context that drives the development of this language, as well as its impact on youth understanding and identity. In addition, the article discusses the potential positive and negative impacts of the evolution of youth language on interpersonal communication and how this language reflects changing values in society. In an effort to understand and appreciate the dynamics of youth language, we invite readers to reflect on the importance of language adaptation in keeping up with the times.

The Influence of Using Ambonese Malay Language on Learning of Indonesian Language of Students at PAUD Sinar Terang Anak Bangsa

Teachers and students use Ambonese Malay in learning Indonesian because learning a second language is inseparable from knowledge of the first language mastered by early childhood. This study aims to determine the effect of using Ambonese Malay on Indonesian language learning in early childhood education. This research is a sociolinguistic study to describe the phenomenon of language use. This study's results indicate three influences of the use of Ambonese Malay on students' learning of Indonesian. First, Ambonese Malay has a role as a 'language transfer tool' for children learning to understand a second language, namely Indonesian. Second, it is easy for the teacher to teach Indonesian to children because they can use Ambonese Malay vocabulary as the language of instruction to help students understand what the teacher means by learning Indonesian. Third, students gain knowledge of Indonesian vocabulary through the Ambonese Malay used by students and teachers in class.

Competition of Ethnic and National Languages within the Home Domain: Insights from Multilingual Sasak Family Language Choice, Lombok – Indonesia

Competition of languages in a bilingual/multilingual society is a prevalent phenomenon found anywhere in the world. Competition occurs when the choice of one language is supposed to be ‘prioritized’ and ‘prized’ over the other(s) in any domain of language use. This study explores how this phenomenon of language use occurs in the homeland of Sasak vernacular speakers living in the city of Mataram, Lombok–Indonesia. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which family members of native Sasak inhabitants in Mataram use their own ethnic language in their daily interaction with their family members in the home, neighborhood, and friendship domains. Data were collected through survey questionnaires, interviews, and participant observations by employing the concept of Fishman’s domain of language use, language attitude, and bilingualism. The obtained data were then selected, classified, and tabulated to compute the frequency of speech occurrences in each study group. The results show that participants displayed positive attitudes towards their mother tongue indicating that they were very proud of their first language. SL was almost always used in daily conversations in the home domain and neighborhood but the rate of use slightly differed among different age, education, and occupational groups. Societal bilingual patterns were portrayed in the stable use of both the indigenous language (SL) in the home domain and the national language (IL) in the official domain in education, government, or religious gatherings. Within the context of EGIDS by SIL, UNESCO developed from Fishman (1972) SL at present is still safe and maintained by its people.

TRANSLINGUAGING IN EFL CLASSROOM AND ITS IMPACT ON STUDENT'S PERFORMANCE AT A SECONDARY SCHOOL LEVEL: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Translinguaging is a phenomenon of language use where the people are bilingual or multilingual. Tanslinguaging occurs in the community and schools, both rural and urban areas. At the Indonesian secondary school level, the learning of English as a foreign language (EFL), teachers and students at schools use the target language (English) and the Indonesian language as the official language in the education system. But, local languages also occur and are used in schools for the students who have their local language, including in rural schools. This article uses the literature review method to analyze the use of translanguaging (Indonesian language, local language, and English) in EFL classrooms at schools and its effects. The author collects several national and international journals. The journal was compiled purposively, which related to translanguaging at schools. The literature review found that translinguaging in the EFL classroom influences students' performance with multilingual backgrounds (Indonesian language, local languages, and English). Therefore, translinguaging-based instruction is considered good if applied to learning English as Foreign Language (EFL).

Islamic Boarding School Linguistic Landscape in The Development of Arabic Language Skills and Islamic Knowledge

Linguistic landscape is one area of ​​sociolinguistics that examines specifically the phenomenon of language use in public spaces, be it monolingual, bilingual or multilingual. Islamic boarding schools as geographically exclusive Islamic educational institutions have a linguistic landscape phenomenon that is characterized and based on Arabic. This is in line with the Islamic orientation built in pesantren education. This study aims to explore the use of Arabic in the public space of Islamic boarding schools and its contribution to the development of Arabic language skills and Islamic knowledge of students. This research is a qualitative research with descriptive analysis. In this study, data collection used the observing method and the documentation method. The listening method is used to collect data in the form of writing while the documentation method is used to collect data in the form of pictures taken by cell phone. All data is processed and given a code and then selected based on who produced the text. The results of this study are: (1) The linguistic landscape of Arabic in the pesantren environment is categorized into 3 categories: verses of the Qur'an, Matan Hadith Nabawi, and Maqolah of Ulama. (2) The linguistic landscape of Arabic is part of the pesantren learning process indirectly, especially in supporting classroom learning so that it is internalized in life. (3) The linguistic landscape of Arabic has significance in developing the Arabic language skills and Islamic knowledge of the students in the pesantren environment.

Hate Language Produced by Indonesian Figures in Social Media: From Philosophical Perspectives

This study aims to: (1) describe the linguistic forms typically used in hate speech; (2) reveal the interpretation and intention of hate speech, and (3) propose its pedagogical implication. This was descriptive qualitative research with content and a philosophic analysis approach. The data were excerpts containing hate language produced by figures collected from YouTube videos. The hate speech was linguistically manifested through the use of swear words, mental abnormality terms, the animal metaphor, insults which refer to characters, Arabic terms with negative meaning, and nicknames that call out physical characteristics. According to the interpretation in the Indonesian context, the speakers use hate language to vent negative feelings, insult, condemn, accuse, show disagreement, show dissatisfaction, wish bad luck, and threaten. The hate language appears to be an Indonesian phenomenon of language use, however, its forms and functions are determined by the contextual or philosophic background of the users. Some hate language in this paper was found to mask the speakers’ defeat and incapability against the target of hate.

Pragmatic markers and events on social media in new habit era of COVID-19 outbreak

The phenomenon of language use in social media is interesting and important because it can describe positive or negative language use. The purpose of the study was to analyze the pragmatic markers and forms of language use on social media in the era of new habits during the COVID 19 outbreak. The research method used a qualitative approach. The results of the study are: (1) religious markers, (2) pronoun markers, (3) interjection markers, and (4) appreciation markers. The form of pragmatics consists of, (1) the form of syntax, (2) the form of discourse, and (3) the form of strategy. Conclusion (1). Positive utterances from speakers are responded to by positive and negative utterances from speech partners, while (2). Negative speech from the speaker is responded to by negative speech from the speech partner. (3). The pragmatic markers and forms of speech by speakers are 50% positive and 50% negative, while the pragmatic markers and forms of speech partners are 30% positive and 70% negative. (4). Positive pragmatic markers and forms are important to be used by speakers and speech partners so that they will have an impact on positive and healthy social media.

The Hoax News Text On Social Media: A Critical Discourse Study

The phenomenon of using language in cyberspace or social media has indeed a trend with various contemporary applications, with the aim of being more effective and efficient in communicating. The benefits of technology cannot be reached by its advantages and besides that, it also cannot be ignored from the negative side. It is possible that with various applications, it is easy to spread fake news text on social media. The text of fake news on social media, information in this study is used as a data source and at the same time used as an object of study on Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, and other media accounts. The aim of this study was to describe in depth the problem of the phenomenon of the spread of fake news texts on social media, this is adjusted to the problems raised in this study. The purpose is to find out and analyze the language criteria used in hoax text news texts on social media. This research was a type of qualitative descriptive research. By using van Dijk's version of the critical discourse study theory as a theoretical framework with the aim of revealing the phenomenon of language use in depth, both micro and macro, with the point of view of discourse as a text, social cognition, and context. Furthermore, methods and the techniques of data collection in this study. As the first step by way of observation, the next step was documentation that was supported by instruments in the form of questionnaires and analysis tables. Based on the results of data analysis, several things were found as follows: (1) criteria for hoax news texts on social media, consisting of (a) fake news texts on S social media are only humorous; (b) have low modality (c) motivation to want to cheat relatively (d) have incomplete information (e), not high plagiarism. Thus all of these things are indeed true empirically that the condition of the text of hoax news on social media is as described previously. All of this has become a widespread discussion regarding the concept of hoax news itself.

Code-Crossing in Indonesian EFL Classroom Interaction

The phenomena of language use in the class still become the object of study ever since the languages are essential aspects in classroom interaction. It cannot be denied that in the classroom interaction, the communicative styles of the lecturers and students will be influenced by many aspects. One of them is the social status differences which lead to the occurrence of code-crossing in the class. For that purpose, the study in this paper is directed to explore the occurrence of code-crossing in the class and the factors influencing it. This research applied a qualitative research design taking two English classes and their students at one university in Makassar as the subject. The data of this research were collected by employing classroom observation and audio recording. The data were analyzed descriptively by adopting Discourse Analysis approach which relies on data recording, data transcription, data selection, and data interpretation. The result of the research shows that the lecturers and the students employed code-crossing in EFL classroom interaction which can be seen from the use of low and high code. This study also found that the use of that high and low code in the form of code-crossing of the lecturers and the students is influenced by the power of social status, age differences, the social distance or familiarity, and intimacy between the lecturers and the students. Findings from this study are worthy of reading for English language teaching practitioners in their effort to create effective classroom interaction.Â

Analisis Semiotika Iklan Produk Elektronik Handphone di Media Cetak

The objectives of this research are (1) to identify and analyze the types of semiotic meaning of electronic product advertising on magazine including signified and signifier. (2) to analyze whether there is a relationship between the signifier and signified concerning the expression of the meaning that exists in electronic products mobile advertising in the print media; (3) to determine the rhetorical language and why it is used in electronic product advertising. This research is descriptive qualitative study. The data were taken randomly from three magazine monthly editions June and July 2013 as many as 6 product electronic chosen in which the data were taken in various types of mobile electronic product. In identifying and analyzing the semiotic meaning is used semiotic theory concerning (signified and signifier). It can be concluded that semiotic meaning including the use of icon, index, and symbol also types of language are used especially for marketing product. Additionally, further research on semiotic and its elements in magazine or another media may be pursued that the phenomenon of language use and language aspect can be clearly understood.Keywords : semiotic, icon, index and symbol

Competition as a unifying concept for the study of language

With linguistics suffering from increasing fractionalization, it is necessary not to lose sight of the overall picture. It seems uncontroversial that the study of language consists of the following five components: processing, use, structure, variation, and change. While some of the relationships between these concepts have been investigated, a systematic integration of these components into a coherent framework is conspicuously missing. A modest attempt is made here to outline such a framework which makes the interrelationships of the components transparent. In all of these components, competition is found to play a key role. At its core, competition is a psycholinguistic effect which arises in the task of selecting an intended unit from among a number of elements concurrently activated in the processing network. The audible and visible outcome of the selection process is language use. Language structure is the prerequisite for competition in that it provides the set of competitors. When competition is low, consistent (i.e., invariant) language use emerges. When competition is high, language use is variable, i.e., synchronic variation occurs. When competition changes over time, language change takes place. Thus, it is language processing in general and competition in particular that constrains and binds together many phenomena of language use, structure, variation, and change.

KOMUNIKASI AMONG DALAM TINDAK TUTUR PEMBELAJARAN

This study aims to describe and explain among (caring) communication represented by learning speech acts. The among communication in learning speech acts is a natural phenomenon of language use in a socio-cultural context. This was a qualitative study employing pragmatics and ethnography. Based on the data analysis, three categories of findings are obtained. First, the front speech act leads and controls the communication. Second, the middle speech act guides and encourages the communication. Third, the back speech act lets the communication be free. These represent the children’s among communication in the front, the peers’ among communication in the middle, and the adults’ among communication in the back; they are figurative, motivating, and delegating in nature.

On thetical grammar

Most frameworks of linguistic analysis tend to highlight phenomena of language use and/or language knowledge such as sentence and word structure, while backgrounding or ignoring other phenomena that are interpreted as being of more marginal interest for the linguist. The main goal of this paper is to argue that some phenomena that have previously been treated as being more peripheral play an important role in the organization of linguistic discourse, and that the latter operates in at least two different domains, namely that of sentence grammar and of thetical grammar. Each of the two domains has its own internal structure, and the two tend to be separated from one another syntactically, prosodically, and semantically. Building on recent research, the paper aims at defining the main characteristics of thetical grammar.

Grammar resources for modelling dialogue dynamically

This paper argues that by analysing language as a mechanism for growth of information (Cann etal. in The Dynamics of Language, Elsevier, Oxford, 2005; Kempson etal. in Dynamic Syntax, Blackwell, Oxford, 2001), not only does a unitary basis for ellipsis become possible, otherwise thought to be irredeemably heterogeneous, but also a whole range of sub-types of ellipsis, otherwise thought to be unique to dialogue, emerge as natural consequences of use of language in context. Dialogue fragment types modelled include reformulations, clarification requests, extensions, and acknowledgements. Buttressing this analysis, we show how incremental use of fragments serves to progressively narrow down the otherwise mushrooming interpretational alternatives in language use, and hence is central to fluent conversational interaction. We conclude that, by its ability to reflect dialogue dynamics as a core phenomenon of language use, a grammar with inbuilt parsing dynamics opens up the potential for analysing language as a mechanism for communicative interaction.

HUMOR DALAM MAJALAH DJAKA LODANG (Kajian Bentuk Humor)

The use of puns to express humor in Djaka Lodang, a Javanese magazine, is alanguage phenomenon of language use that is interesting to study. This researchstudy aims to (1) describe sections containing humorous discourses in Djaka Lodang,and (2) describe the forms of the humorous discourses.This study employed the descriptive approach. The data sources were DjakaLodang published in the period of January to March 2003. The research data weresegments of discourse containing humorous elements. The data were collectedby reading and recording by means of the discourse analysis technique. The datavalidity was assessed through semantic validity. The data reliability was assessedby reading and rereading (intra-rater reliability). The data were analyzed by usingthe descriptive technique comprising induction and comparison, categorization,tabulation, and inference making.The research findings show that of 32 sections available in Djaka Lodang 18sections contain humorous discourses. The 18 sections are (1) Cerita Rakyat, (2)Srumuwus, (3) Wawasan Droning Negara, (4) Wawasan Jaban Ranglcah, (5) Pagelaran,(6) Profil, (7) Sketsa, (8) Pedhalangan, (9) Lem bar Agama, (10) Macapat, (11) Seninjong,(12) Cerita Sambung, (13) Mendhowan, (14) Pengalamanku, (15) Cerita Cekak, (16) WacanBocah, (17) Tetepungan, and (18) Dhat Nyeng. There are seven forms of the humorousdiscourses, namely description, story, topic sentence, poem, magic spell, trappingexpression, and pun.

Linguistic alternants and code selection in Baba Malay

ABSTRACT: This paper provides a brief account and explanation of the phenomenon of language use among the Baba community of Singapore. It is shown that the community utilizes Hokkien, Malay and English in the process of code selection and code‐mixing/switching. The sequential use of the three languages is especially noteworthy for the purpose of reiteration. The Babas have been a distinct group of Chinese for centuries in the former straits Settlements of Malaya (comprising Malacca, Penang and Singapore). They are mainly descendants of the first Chinese immigrants to Malaya who belonged to the Hokkien and Teochew dialect groups. The data are drawn from the recordings of conversations of the babas and nyonyas.
