Exploring the Adoption Phenomenon of Artificial Intelligence by Doctoral Students Within Doctoral Education

The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in academia is an emerging field of interest. However, there is scant literature that explores the phenomenon of AI adoption by graduate students in doctoral education. This study employs collaborative autoethnography to explore and better understand the nuances of how doctoral students experience AI technologies within academic pursuits. A critical analysis of data revealed that the collective researcher-participant experiences offered the primary overarching theme of adoption strategy, with four distinct subthemes: adoption fear, adoption resistance, adoption feasibility, and adoption ethics. The findings suggest a balanced approach to AI adoption depends on the development of comprehensive strategies that are informed by a deep understanding of both the technological capabilities and the human factors involved. We urge both doctoral students and educators involved in doctoral programs to think critically about these identified themes. For doctoral students, this analysis offers valuable insights into challenges associated with integrating AI technologies into formal learning environments, potentially enhancing a management strategy for their doctoral studies. Educators tasked with integrating and evaluating AI technologies for doctoral coursework may develop a deeper understanding of the challenges their students may encounter during the adoption process.

Enacting writing differently through a collective liminal experience

ABSTRACT Writing differently presents numerous challenges, impossibilities, and anxieties. While literature underscores the significance of cultivating new writing forms, the actual experience of writing differently remains obscure. This paper seeks to better understand how alternative forms of writing can be enacted. More specifically, it aims to explore how writing differently affects the process of becoming an academiX, by analyzing our collective and individual experiences within Compo·X, a collective of PhD students. We perceive our doctoral experience as a liminal one, a transitional phase that reshapes our identities. We illustrate how our distinct writing practices facilitated the development of a shared identity and an environment for growth in academic world often known for its lack of inclusivity. At the end, we show how writing differently and collective writing helped us to swim against the tide and served as a platform for micro-revolutions within us and academia’s competitive and normative culture and organization.

Interdisciplinary Consensus in Evaluating the Severity Subscale of the Original and Revised Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale Through Video-Based Assessment: An Inter-Rater Reliability Study.

Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale (TWSTRS) is widely employed for cervical dystonia (CD) evaluation. To assess the inter-rater reliability of the severity subscale of the original and revised TWSTRS using video recordings. Three raters, a PhD student with a nursing degree, a physiotherapist specialized in CD, and a neurologist-in-training independently rated all videos. The inter-rater reliability was assessed with the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). The total severity score of both tools demonstrated a good inter-rater reliability (ICC = 0.87 to 0.88). The inter-rater reliability of individual sub-items varied from poor (ICC = 0.29) to excellent (ICC = 0.9). The total severity score of both TWSTRS showed good inter-rater reliability in a multidisciplinary team, indicating their applicability for online patients' assessment. We recommend using the total subscale for outcome comparison. Furthermore, there is a need for more accurate definitions of duration factor and shoulder elevation.

On the occasion of the significant jubilee of Professor Miroslav Kmet as an expert in the field of history didactics, the text reflects the areas of didactic research, which have received attention at the Department of History of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ostrava, as well as the current focus of research. It presents the research topics of the graduates of the doctoral studies in didactics of history at the Department of History of the Faculty of Arts at the OU presented in their dissertations and a number of journal studies, studies published in collective monographs and journals. The themes of two current students of the study programme were also not omitted.

Doing decoloniality in the context of a PhD born in precarity and pandemic

This article takes a deep dive into my doctoral journey and my lived experience as an emerging Black African scholar doing decolonial research in a South African colonial and Westernized university. I wrestle with the contradictions and tensions that emerged during this period that took place at the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. I also look back with ‘willful resistance’ to the oppressive systems of knowledge productions and the limitations of doing decolonial work. I consider my own complicity with these oppressive systems of knowledge production as I attempt to work within institutional constraints to fulfil the requirements of a PhD degree. Using Black existential theory as a lens and autoethnography as method, the goal is to generate a discussion with other emerging scholars about their own lived experiences doing decolonial research in colonial universities.

Report- Towards a sustainable mobility | Green and blue infrastructures among the Finiq municipality

Finiq is a village located in the homonymous Municipality, which is part of the District of Vlorë. This Municipality has been the subject of the 8th International Workshop of Tirana (9th - 20th January 2023). The workshop, “Re-Inventing Phoeniciae (Finiq): New Intersections of Tradition, Innovation, Landscapes and Tourism”, had the aim to address, from different point of view, the problems of “identity”, “shrinking” and “isolation” of this area. The workshop unfolded in two distinct phases. Initially, attendees engaged in a series of enlightening lectures delving into various aspects of Albanian culture, complemented by captivating case studies crafted by both professors and students from Polis University. Additionally, an insightful site-visit to the Municipality of Finiq provided firsthand exposure to real- world applications. Subsequently, the focus shifted to intensive working sessions, where PhD students were grouped into four specialised teams, each tasked with addressing a specific domain: Infrastructures and Facilities, Environmental Systems, Landscapes and Heritage, and Settlements, Public Spaces and Dwellings. Our team, dedicated to scrutinising infrastructural and facility concerns within the Municipality, boasted a diverse array of expertise spanning architecture, urban planning, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering. This diverse blend of skills fostered a rich exchange of perspectives, allowing for a comprehensive analysis and exploration of potential solutions. Through collaborative efforts, this workshop aimed to endeavoured to reimagine Finiq by proposing innovative infrastructural and facility enhancements across various scales, thereby contributing to the holistic revitalisation of the region.

Content Analysis of Postgraduate Theses About the Relationship Between Autism Spectrum Disorder and Physical Activity in Türkiye in 2010-2023

The aim of this study is to evaluate the postgraduate theses on the relationship between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and physical activity registered at the YÖK National Thesis Center between the years 2010-2023 and to examine these theses using the headings of descriptive features, content and methodology. A total of sixty-one (61) theses, forty-four (44) master's theses and seventeen (17) doctoral theses, on the relationship between ASD and physical activity between the years 2010-2023 were included in the study. The data of the study were obtained by using the document review model, which is one of the qualitative research methods, and analyzed by the content analysis method. Within the scope of the findings obtained from the study, it is seen that the postgraduate theses were mostly published between the years 2019-2023 and most of them were completed at Gazi University. The findings obtained show that the master's (49.9%) and doctoral (47%) theses were mostly carried out in Health Sciences Institutes. Thirty-three (33) studies were conducted in the Department of Physical Education and Sports, including twenty-one (21) master's theses (47.7%) and twelve (12) doctoral theses (70.5%). In addition, four (4) master's theses (9%) and two (2) doctoral theses (11.7%) were conducted in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching. A total of twenty-seven (27) studies, nineteen (19) master's theses (41.3%) were conducted by advisors with the title of Assistant Professor, while ten (10) doctoral theses were conducted under the leadership of advisors with the title of Prof. Dr. (%47.6). The sample group of the master's and doctoral studies mostly consists of individuals/children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In addition, the sample group in master's theses (51.5%) and doctoral theses (28.2%) consisted of parents. Of the master's theses in the years 2014-2018 and 2019-2023, 29-30% were studies completed in the field of motor skills and 11-12% in the field of social skills. Of the doctoral theses in the years 2019-2023, 36.8% were studies completed in the field of motor skills and 15.7% in the field of social skills. It was seen that the examined master's and doctoral theses were mostly completed in metropolitan cities such as Istanbul and Ankara. Again, it was understood that postgraduate theses were mostly completed in special education and rehabilitation centers. Quantitative research was mostly applied in postgraduate theses (79.5% of master's degrees, 64.6% of doctoral studies) and the majority used the criterion sampling method (47.7% of master's degrees, 76.4% of doctoral studies). It was also seen that both master's and doctoral theses were conducted in experimental and case study research models. While test battery (41%) and scale (17.9) were used in master's theses, observation form (19.9) and scale (19.9) were used in doctoral theses. Finally, criterion sampling and random sampling methods were preferred in both master's and doctoral theses. As a result, it was seen that the studies completed on individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) increased between 2019-2023 and focused especially on motor skills and social skills.

Art therapy as a bridge to expand burn care beyond surgery: Providers’ perspectives in an inpatient burn center

Burn injuries necessitate resource-intensive multidisciplinary care and psychosocial support. Incorporating art therapy in burn centers could enhance patient and provider care. However, research on the impact and reception of art therapy within the context of burn care is scarce. A doctoral dissertation study introduced art therapy intervention for burn patients. As part of this research, we conducted a qualitative study to explore health-care providers’ experiences, with a focus on their perspectives on burn-care and art therapy to inform research and clinical practice. Using thematic analysis in qualitative research, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 health-care providers from varied disciplines and identified the following three themes: a) Burn care is a “multifaceted problem” as well as an impact-driven, rewarding experience for providers; b) The visuality of art therapy coupled with physical activity is perceived as a necessary “emotional outlet” for burn patients; and c) Future art therapy research/practice goals are linked to complex patient presentations, specific multidisciplinary team challenges, and the critical care environment. Positive perceptions reinforced that art therapy could contribute to inpatient care as part of multidisciplinary burn teams. More research is needed to address the identified psychosocial, functional, and interprofessional needs of patients and providers.

Career Paths and Curriculum Relevance of Master of Arts in Home Economics Education Graduates: A tracer Study

The study was conducted to trace the graduates of the Master of Arts in Home Economics Education from SY 2010-2023. Thirty-nine out of forty-three graduates participated in the study at workplaces in Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, Davao de Oro, and abroad. A survey questionnaire patterned from the CHED Graduate Tracer Study with some modifications was used to collect information and sent through Google Forms, messenger, and email. The collected information was tabulated and analyzed, and the information was presented in the form of tables and graphs. Information from the socio-demographic and educational profile was presented as graphs and tables. The Likert scale was used to analyze the curriculum and work-skill-related factors. The study's results revealed that the MAHEED graduates comprised primarily of married women between 31-35 years old. Most remained as MAHEED graduates and did not pursue a PhD program. The primary reason for pursuing the MAHEED program is for promotion. Most of them are NC2, NC3, and TM TESDA holders. Most of them work regularly in the Department of Education as Teacher II. The curriculum-related factors were rated very relevant, with the major courses ranked first in relevance to the employability and promotion of MAHEED graduates. The work-related factors were also rated very relevant, with critical thinking ranked first in relevance to the employability and promotion of MAHEED graduates.

The first contribution is by Óscar Gómez-Delgado, a study entitled "The notion of English as an international language in a selection of teacher training programmes in Colombia". Next, Sofia Di Sarno-García presents the study “Expectations and level of satisfaction of language learners in a telecollaboration project”. The third article, written by Hilda Buitrago-García, is entitled “Principles of teacher professional development and digital lexicographic skills for the design of continuing education modules”. In the interview (“The word to collectively build peace”), Natalia Quiceno Rodríguez talks with the professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal and the University of Lisbon Ana L. Costa. Finally, Marcos Antonio Troncoso Díaz presents a review of the collective volume “Advances in the study of scientific and academic language”, coordinated by Ventura Salazar García and María Aurora García Ruiz.

A network approach to PhD students’ well-being: insights into risk and protective factors

ABSTRACT Due to the high demands of doctoral education, concerns have been raised about PhD students’ well-being. In addition to the adverse individual impact, poor well-being of PhD students is also problematic for universities, which might lose talented researchers via absenteeism and drop-out. Despite substantial knowledge about factors influencing well-being in academia, we know little about how these factors jointly promote or impede PhD students’ well-being. We applied network analysis, alongside regression analysis, to cross-sectional data from 665 PhD students in the Netherlands to explore how PhD students’ job demands, job resources, and personal resources are associated with subjective and archival well-being indices. Findings suggest that job demands, job resources, and personal resources influence PhD students’ well-being directly and indirectly via associations with other factors. Among job demands, both publication pressure and work-home conflict were associated with higher burnout. Additionally, work-home conflict was associated with higher sickness absenteeism. Psychological capital stood out as the most important resource within the network and was related to lower burnout, higher engagement, and lower sickness absenteeism. By highlighting the importance of personal resources, particularly psychological capital, for PhD students’ well-being, this study can guide the development of interventions to promote PhD students’ well-being.

Onward and Upward: The Ongoing Push for PhD and DNP Collaboration

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) nursing degrees have historically been recognized for their unique contributions to the nursing discipline. Historically, the DNP is considered as an advanced clinical practice degree, whereas the PhD is a research-intensive degree. There are clear benefits to DNP and PhD prepared nurses collaborating to address health issues and improve patient outcomes. Institutions that support intentional collaboration are more likely to develop effective teams that utilize their diverse knowledge and skills. Strategies include identifying and addressing barriers, supporting doctoral education, creating a collaborative environment, recruiting with intention, and appreciating the value in both PhD and DNP nurses.

Árpád Hanusz was born in 1946 in Ipolytölgyes. His talent was noticed early on, and at the recommendation of his headmaster, he continued his secondary school studies at the Sztáron Sándor High School, where he graduated in 1964. He completed his higher education at the Nyíregyháza Teacher Training College, majoring in Geography and Biology, and even when he was a college student he considered it important that, in addition to acquiring theoretical knowledge, it is also necessary to make use of practical experience. In 1994, he defended his PhD thesis and successfully completed his habilitation. He was appointed university professor in 2001 in recognition of his decades of teaching and research work of an exceptionally high standard. His field of research changed over time, his interest turned from caving to exploring the issues in human geography. This is how he became a nationally recognized specialist on the socio-economic effects of tourism and its consequences on rural development. Professor Hanusz, known as the ”Teacher of Szatmár”, did a lot for the development of rural tourism not only in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, but also beyond the borders of Hungary.

A Feminist Autoethnography of a Family Archive: Affects, Narratives and Practices During Two World Crises: World War II and Covid-19

What happens when we, as researchers, are living through a world crisis such as Covid-19, whilst studying a family epistolary archive produced during World War Two, another world crisis? What epistemological and methodological bridges can be made between the personal experiences of two women (great aunt and great niece) living in two moments of history but who are connected by the process of writing and reading epistolary documents? By conducting a feminist autoethnography of my experience in the Covd-19 pandemic, I reflect upon what it has meant to do feminist historic and archival research of the experience of Trixie Mayer, the first Mexican volunteer to join the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force in Great Britain from 1942 to 1946 and who produced more than 200 personal documents during her war work and afterwards kept them, together with the documents she received form her family in Mexico, for more than 70 years. I analyse how living through a pandemic has helped me understand my great aunt’s crisis experiences from a different perspective, questions, partialities and, at the same time, how these personal and familiar writings have helped me understand and question our current reality and PhD thesis from an alternative perspective.

Sinclair at Department of Biology, University of Western Ontario, Canada, investigating how gut microbes, especially yeasts, affect their host physiology.
