Asymmetric multi-image encoding and hiding scheme with structured fingerprint phase masks using gyrator transform and phase-shifting digital holography

We propose a novel technique for multi-image encryption and hiding schemes under an optical asymmetric framework using structured fingerprint phase masks (SFPMs) in the gyrator transform (GT) domain and three-step phase-shifting digital holography (PSDH). A SFPM contains unique features of fingerprint and structured phases of the optical vortex beam, which provides enhanced security in the cryptosystem. To encrypt multiple images, GT-based phase truncation and phase reservation techniques have been used in the first level of security, whereas three-step PSDH has been used to obtain the final cipher text. The cipher text is embedded in the host image to perform the watermarking process. In this process, the host is further decomposed into three parts in which anyone from the last two parts can be used for watermark embedding, and the first part is stored as the key. The use of polar decomposition in the watermarking process provides an additional layer of security. Numerical simulations and experimental results are presented to support the proposed scheme.

A multiple-image encryption method based on bimodal biometric keys

In this paper, a multiple-image encryption method based on bimodal biometric keys is proposed, which has the advantages of high level of security, high encryption efficiency, high security and good convenience as well as strong robustness of bimodal biometric keys. In the encryption process, each plaintext image is firstly encoded into corresponding QR code and subsequently encrypted by using a compressive encryption method with fingerprint chaotic measurement matrix of each encryption user and a filtering encryption method in discrete cosine transform domain with iris chaotic mask of each encryption user successively, then the encryption complex amplitude is generated with the help of grating modulation technology and matrix splicing technology, thereafter the encryption complex amplitude is finally encrypted into two hologram ciphertexts by using a two-step phase-shift digital holography with fingerprint chaotic phase mask of encryption administrator. In the decrytion process, the decryption administrator first passes the fingerprint authentication and then the decryption complex amplitude is generated, thereafter multiple-image decryption can be achieved through the fingerprint authentication and iris authentication of each decryption user. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed multiple-image encryption method, a series of numerical simulations are performed, and the simulation results show that the proposed method exhibits high feasibility as well as level of security and the bimodal biometric keys possess high security and strong robustness.

Adaptive phase-shifting interferometry based on a phase-shifting digital holography algorithm.

Phase-shifting interferometry (PSI) requires accurate phase shifts between interferograms for realizing high-accuracy phase retrieval. This paper presents an adaptive PSI through synchronously capturing phase shifts measurement interferograms and phase measurement interferograms, in which the former is a series of spatial carrier frequency phase-shifting interferograms generated by an additional assembly and the phase shifts are calculated with the single-spectrum phase shifts measurement algorithm (SS-PSMA), the latter is employed for phase retrieval with an adaptive phase-shifting digital holography algorithm (PSDHA) based on complex amplitude recovery. In addition to exhibiting excellent reliability, high-accuracy phase retrieval (0.02 rad), and short calculation time (<25 ms), the proposed adaptive PSDHA is suitable for various interferograms with different fringe shapes and numbers. Importantly, both simulation analysis and experimental result demonstrate that this adaptive PSI based on PSDHA can effectively eliminate phase-shifting errors caused by phase shifter and external disturbance, ensuring high-accuracy phase shifts measurement and phase retrieval, meanwhile significantly reducing phase-shifting interferograms acquisition time and phase retrieval calculation time.

Parallel Phase-Shifting Digital Holographic Phase Imaging of Micro-Optical Elements with a Polarization Camera

In this paper, we propose a measurement method of micro-optical elements with parallel phase-shifting digital holographic phase imaging. This method can record four phase-shifting holograms with a phase difference of π/2 in a single shot and correct the pixel mismatch error of the polarization camera using a bilinear interpolation algorithm, thereby producing high-resolution four-step phase-shifting holograms. This method reconstructs the real phase information of the object to be measured through a four-step phase-shifting algorithm. The reproduced image eliminates the interference of zero-order images and conjugate images, overcoming the problem that traditional phase-shifting digital holography cannot be measured in real time. A simulation analysis showed that the relative error of this measurement method could reach 0.0051%. The accurate surface topography information of the object was reconstructed from an experimental measurement through a microlens array. Multiple measurements yielded a mean absolute error and a mean relative error for the vertical height of the microlens array down to 5.9500 nm and 0.0461%, respectively.

Spatially divided two-step phase-shifting method for computational optical scanning holography

Computational optical scanning holography (COSH) is one of the single-pixel incoherent digital holographic techniques; therefore, three-dimensional fluorescent objects can be measured as a digital hologram with a single-pixel detector. However, due to the requirement of a phase-shifting method to remove unnecessary components from holograms, the number of measurements of COSH is larger than the number of pixels. To reduce the number of measurements, the spatially divided phase-shifting method has been proposed. Similar to the parallel four-step phase-shifting digital holography, the spatially divided phase-shifting method can obtain four phase-shifted holograms simultaneously. However, the spatially divided phase-shifting method has a problem in that the spatial resolution is lower than the original COSH. In this paper, a spatially divided two-step phase-shifting method is proposed to improve spatial resolution. The numerical evaluation results indicate the feasibility of the proposed method. In addition, the proposed method is applied to microscopy for proof of principle experiment. The experimental results indicate the proposed method improves the image quality compared with the conventional spatially divided four-step phase shifting method.

Robust Holographic Reconstruction by Deep Learning with One Frame

A robust method is proposed to reconstruct images with only one hologram in digital holography by introducing a deep learning (DL) network. The U-net neural network is designed according to DL principles and trained by the image data set collected using phase-shifting digital holography (PSDH). The training data set was established by collecting thousands of reconstructed images using PSDH. The proposed method can complete the holography reconstruction with only a single hologram and then benefits the space bandwidth product and relaxes the storage loads of PSDH. Compared with the results of PSDH, the results of deep learning are immune to most disturbances, including reference tilt, phase-shift errors, and speckle noise. Assisted by a GPU processor, the proposed reconstruction method can reduce the consumption time to almost one percent of the time needed by two-step PSDH. This method is expected to be capable of holography imaging with a single hologram, with high capacity, efficiently in the digital holography applications.

Optical encoding and hiding scheme for a double image based on chaotic fingerprint phase masks and phase-shifting digital holography.

This paper proposes a novel, to the best of our knowledge, double-image hiding scheme based on the chaotic fingerprint phase masks (CFPMs) and three-step phase-shifting digital holography (PSDH). First, the two images to be hidden are encoded into a complex amplitude image, and then with the help of the CFPM located in the Fresnel transform (FrT) domain and the three-step PSDH, the complex amplitude image can be encoded into three noise-like interference holograms. Finally, the three noise-like interference holograms are hidden into the texture part of the host image by the discrete wavelet transform based fusion approach and variational image decomposition technique. This scheme can simultaneously hide two images into one host image, and the invisibility and robustness of the hiding scheme can be well balanced by embedding the secret image in the texture of the host image. Additionally, the introduction of a biometric feature increases the association of the key and the authorized user, and the parameters of the chaotic map and FrT can also provide additional security tothe proposed scheme. We have verified the scheme's feasibility, security, and robustness through extensive experiments.

Chirped pulse phase-shifting digital holography for capturing the sequence of ultrafast optical wavefronts

For capturing the sequence of ultrafast optical wavefronts, chirped pulse phase-shifting digital holography, where a chirped reference pulse and multiple object pulses for probing an ultrafast phenomenon are used in an on-axis optical setup, is proposed and analyzed. In this study, holograms with different polarization directions at different times are obtained using a single-shot optical pulse. The procedure for reconstructing time-separated multiple amplitude images and phase images are derived and verified by numerical simulations.

Functionally integrated waveguide illuminator for common-path digital holographic microscopy through random media.

We designed and fabricated a functionally integrated optical waveguide illuminator specially for common-path digital holographic microscopy through random media. The waveguide illuminator creates two point sources with desired phase shifts, which are located close to one another so that the common-path condition of the object and reference illumination is satisfied. Thereby, the proposed device permits phase-shift digital holographic microscopy free from bulky optical elements such as a beam splitter, an objective lens, and a piezoelectric transducer for phase shifting. Using the proposed device, microscopic 3D imaging through a highly heterogeneous double-composite random medium was experimentally demonstrated by means of common-path phase-shift digital holography.

High-speed phase-shifting incoherent digital holography (invited)

We propose high-speed incoherent digital holography with a recording speed of 1,000 fps, which is designed for the three-dimensional (3D) motion-picture measurement of moving objects with high temporal resolution. We adopt single-shot phase-shifting incoherent digital holography, a high-speed polarization-imaging camera system, and a palm-sized self-interference interferometer designed for spatially and temporally incoherent light, to implement a high-speed phase-shifting incoherent digital holography system. High-speed four-dimensional (4D) (3D and time) measurement capability is experimentally demonstrated, using the constructed incoherent digital holography system set on a wagon and a daily-use white-color light-emitting diode.

Synchronous Phase-Shifting Interference for High Precision Phase Imaging of Objects Using Common Optics.

Quantitative phase imaging and measurement of surface topography and fluid dynamics for objects, especially for moving objects, is critical in various fields. Although effective, existing synchronous phase-shifting methods may introduce additional phase changes in the light field due to differences in optical paths or need specific optics to implement synchronous phase-shifting, such as the beamsplitter with additional anti-reflective coating and a micro-polarizer array. Therefore, we propose a synchronous phase-shifting method based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer to tackle these issues in existing methods. The proposed method uses common optics to simultaneously acquire four phase-shifted digital holograms with equal optical paths for object and reference waves. Therefore, it can be used to reconstruct the phase distribution of static and dynamic objects with high precision and high resolution. In the experiment, the theoretical resolution of the proposed system was 1.064 µm while the actual resolution could achieve 1.381 µm, which was confirmed by measuring a phase-only resolution chart. Besides, the dynamic phase imaging of a moving standard object was completed to verify the proposed system's effectiveness. The experimental results show that our proposed method is suitable and promising in dynamic phase imaging and measurement of moving objects using phase-shifting digital holography.

Range selective phase-shifting frequency-modulated digital holography with temporal-heterodyning.

We demonstrate that a time of flight (TOF) camera can be used to perform range selective temporal-heterodyne frequency-modulated continuous wave digital holography (TH FMCW DH). The modulated arrayed detection of a TOF camera allows efficient integration of holograms at a selected range with range resolutions significantly less than the optical system's depth of field. TH FMCW DH also allows for on-axis geometries to be achieved, where background light not at the internal modulation frequency of the camera is filtered out. Range selective TH FMCW DH imaging was achieved for both image holograms and Fresnel holograms using on-axis DH geometries. A 2.39GHz FMCW chirp bandwidth resulted in a DH range resolution of 6.3cm.

Single-shot generalized Hanbury Brown-Twiss experiments using a polarization camera for target intensity reconstruction in scattering media.

To see through a random light field in real-time, single-shot generalized Hanbury Brown-Twiss experiments using a polarization camera are proposed. The target intensity distribution is obtained from a complex coherence function which is calculated from auto-correlation and cross correlation functions of phase-shifted speckle intensity distributions. The phase-shifted speckle intensity distributions are simultaneously obtained through a strategy of parallel phase-shifting digital holography. Experimental results show that the proposed method can image a moving object in a random light field using a measured complex coherence function through the van Cittert-Zernike theorem.

Phase retrieval without phase unwrapping for white blood cells in deep-learning phase-shifting digital holography

Phase retrieval and phase unwrapping are the two important problems for enabling quantitative phase imaging of cells in phase-shifting digital holography. To simultaneously cope with these two problems, a deep-learning phase-shifting digital holography method is proposed in this paper. The proposed method can establish the continuous mapping function of the interferogram to the ground-truth phase using the end-to-end convolutional neural network. With a well-trained deep convolutional neural network, this method can retrieve the phase from one-frame blindly phase-shifted interferogram, without phase unwrapping. The feasibility and applicability of the proposed method are verified by the simulation experiments of the microsphere and white blood cells, respectively. This method will pave the way to the quantitative phase imaging of biological cells with complex substructures.

Quantitative phase reconstruction method based on an infrared-like single wave conversion in dual-wavelength phase-shift digital holography

Dual-wavelength digital holography has recently become a promising tool for achieving higher axial measurement ranges in microscopy. However, digital filtering, such as Fourier transform, or a separate hologram acquisition process is essential for retrieving the quantitative phase information of each respective wavelength. In this paper, a quantitative phase reconstruction method based on an infrared-like single wave conversion in dual-wavelength phase-shift digital holography, which does not require any of the processes mentioned above, has been proposed. Based on the proposed method, the quantitative phase information on the axial measurement specimen was simply obtained by only a phase-shift of a quarter of an infrared-like single wave which has the same magnitude of the synthetic wavelength. This approach simplifies not only the hologram acquisition process but also the numerical reconstruction process. The newly proposed theory is verified and evaluated using simulations and experimental validation.

Robust Evaluation of Reference Tilt in Digital Holography

A robust approach is designed to evaluate the reference tilt angle (RTA) accurately and efficiently by local Gaussian fitting (LGF) for the distribution of one frequency peak on a spatial spectrum plane (SSP). The novel method proposed can avoid enlarging the data array on either a hologram or an SSP and then alleviate the computing burden on information processing hardware. Moreover, the RTA precision can be improved by one order of the magnitude in certain ranges, which benefits not only the accurate image recovery in an off-axis digital holography (DH) display but also the thorough removal of the tilt error effect on the image quality in phase-shifting digital holography (PSDH). The error source of the frequency peak position is analyzed theoretically and the principle with detailed steps is described. Several cases of numerical simulations have been carried out to demonstrate the availability and accuracy of this robust RTA evaluation method.

Three-dimensional dynamic measurement of unstable temperature fields by multi-view single-shot phase-shifting digital holography.

A multi-view phase measurement system based on single-shot phase-shifting digital holography is proposed to dynamically obtain three-dimensional (3-D) information of an unstable temperature field. The proposed system consists of a laser, three polarization imaging cameras, and the corresponding optical components. The laser beam emitted from the laser is separated by the fibers into three pairs that contain three object beams and three reference beams. The object beams pass through the object in three different directions and interfere with the reference beams at the image sensor plane respectively. The recording of the three cameras is triggered simultaneously, which enables the phase measurement of dynamic objects from different viewpoints. We successfully measured the 3-D distributions of an unstable temperature field in the experiments with the proposed system.

Scattering-medium-based optical image encryption by chaos and digital optical phase conjugation

Scattering-medium-based optical image encryption provides an intrinsically tamper-resistant physical key. In this paper, we utilize a scattering medium with ideal optical properties as the physical key. The plaintext is transformed into four noise-like holograms with the help of the four-step phase-shifting digital holography. Low-frequency components of the four holograms are extracted and combined into a new image by the lifting wavelet transform (LWT). Then the combined image is scrambled by the nonlinear 3D chaos-based cyclic shift. In decryption, the digital optical phase conjugation (DOPC) technique is utilized to extract plaintext. Numerical simulations prove the feasibility of the proposed method, and the security analysis shows that our method can resist different attacks.
