Novel poly (vinyl chloride) matrix membrane electrodes for the determination of phenolic pollutants in waste water

The construction and electrochemical response characteristics of poly (vinyl chloride) matrix membrane sensors for seven phenolic compounds (phenol, o-cresol, p-cresol, p-chlorophenol, o-nitrophenol, α-naphthol and β-naphthol) are described. The membranes incorporate ion association complexes of these seven phenolic anions with phenanthroline-iron(II) as electroactive materials. These sensors show linear response for phenol, o-cresol, p-cresol, p-chlorophenol, o-nitrophenol, α-naphthol, and β-naphthol over wide concentration ranges, with an average anionic slope 54.3 mV per concentration decade. The suggested sensors exhibit fast response time (1 min), low determination limits (1×10 −5 M), good stability (2–3 weeks), reasonable selectivity to phenolic compounds in the presence of other water pollutants. The average percentage recovery was 99.78±0.088 for individual phenolates and 99.61±0.198 for phenolates in mixtures. The investigated sensors were successfully used for direct potentiometric determination of traces of these phenolic compounds in wastewater samples. Results with mean accuracy of 99.74±0.29%, 99.82±0.36%, 99.65±0.47%, 99.73±0.37%, 99.77±0.30%, 99.86±0.31% and 99.91±0.22% was obtained for the seven sensors, respectively. These results were compared with data obtained using the British pharamacopial method (The British Pharmacopoeia, Her Majesty's Stationary Office, London, 1993) and others (Clarke's Isolation and Identification of Drugs in Pharmaceuticals Body Fluids and Post-mortem Materials, 2nd Edition, The Pharmaceutical Press, London, 1998).

Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Diabetic Patients

In a retrospective study of 1566 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, 136 were found to have diabetes mellitus for a prevalence of 8.7%. There were 100 males and 36 females, and the average age patient age was 52 years. Saudis accounted for 94 (69%) of the cases. The prevalence of diabetes was 13% for Saudi patients as compared with 5% for non-Saudis (P < 0.005). Sputum conversion took an average of 46 days. There was a 19% prevalence of lower lung field lesions. Ninety-three (68.4%) patients were on insulin therapy, 25 (18.9%) were on oral hypoglycemics, and 18 (13.2%) were managed on diet alone. Of 104 patients who were sputum positive, 100 showed conversion after treatment with first-line antitubercular drugs. There was no statistically significant difference in the sputum conversion between diabetic and nondiabetic patients.

The child was first brought to the emergency room in a drowsy state following administration of 9 drops of Guttalax (a contact laxative preparation) for his constipation given 6 hours before. The prescribed dosage for children between the ages of 2 to 12 years is 2 to 5 drops, diluted in water.Three hours later, after the child had been admitted to the pediatric ward with a diagnosis of drug overdose, convulsions occurred that were successfully stopped by the administration of valium (2 mg, intravenously) after 2 minutes. The child had no history of convulsions, nor was there any family history of seizures. One hour later, status epilepticus developed that lasted for approximately two hours, and required repeated doses of intravenously administered valium and intramuscularly administered phenobarbital before ceasing.Following this, the patient’s condition improved over 24 hours, and he was discharged home 5 days later with no further episodes of convulsions.The child was evaluated for possible electrolyte imbalance, metabolic disorders, and infection as the source of the convulsions, but all results of laboratory tests, including repeat biochemical tests and cerebrospinal fluid analysis, were normal. Electroencephalogram and computed tomographic scan of the head were also normal.Guttalax (picosulfate sodium) is a common contact laxative. Taken by mouth, it stimulates bowel movements, following hydrolysis by colonic bacteria.1 Cardiac and renal side effects have been reported, but no central nervous system complications have been recorded.ARTICLE REFERENCES:1.
