Environmental activities of a petrochemical company as a sustainable factor of the city and region

The paramount objective of modern society is to preserve a livable environment for generations to come. In addition to the need to restore the impaired qualities of the environment, measures also must be taken to preclude environmental disasters from happening both now and in the future. The formation of a balanced regional system of cities is hampered by the deterioration of the environmental situation and a decrease in environmental quality indicators. The concentration of industrial sites and vehicles represents one of the biggest adverse anthropogenic factors which stems from the human impact on the environment. Growing industrial clusters and the rising number of vehicles in large cities result in a critical environmental situation. Environmental monitoring measures, once introduced, will facilitate the sustainable development of urban areas and the economy of the region.

The effects of nutrients and folic acid on the biological treatment of petrochemical wastewater

Considering the advantages of biological systems for wastewater treatment in compatibility with the environment, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of different concentrations of folic acid, nitrogen, and phosphorus on the biological treatment of industrial wastewater at Tabriz Petrochemical Company (TPC) in Iran. The Taguchi method with the orthogonal array L9 was used to determine the optimal conditions of microorganism growth. Color, pH, nitrogen, phosphorous, sludge volume reduction, sludge volume index (SVI), and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) were measured. According to the results, the three investigated factors could significantly reduce wastewater. After removing the folic acid color, modulating the pH, and reducing the SVI, the nitrogen factor was considered most effective. Nitrogen also had a significant effect on the removal of output wastewater (62.62%). In addition, the phosphorus factor had the most significant impact on wastewater reduction (65.25%). The optimal conditions were observed with 0.2 ppm of folic acid, 20 ppm of nitrogen, and 4 ppm of phosphorus in the three investigated parameters. Folic acid only significantly affected the increasing of MLSS (90.1%), and the optimal condition of this parameter was with 0.2 ppm of folic acid, 30 ppm of nitrogen, and 4 ppm of phosphorus. Sludge volume reduction was observed in all the reactors. The addition of folic acid, nitrogen, and phosphorous to the TPC wastewater lacking these materials could enhance the output parameters and reduce adverse environmental effects.

The main purpose of safety management is to reduce the frequency of accidents. If a company has steadily succeeded in reducing accidents with sustained efforts, the area that the company should be interested in is the occurrence of major accidents that have a very low frequency of accidents. This serious industrial accident is an event that should not happen forever unless the company wants to become bankrupt. Once it happens, it will have a disastrous impact on the business. In developed countries, especially In Europe, R&D projects have been promoted in order to prevent serious industrial accidents after they’d suffered from the Alexander Kielland accident in 1980 (Norway) and the Piper Alpha accident (UK) in 1988 As a result, barrier management has been adopted as the most effective approach to prevent major accidents. Shell has developed Bow-tie which is one of barrier managements, having made it gone up in the world. Bow-tie is currently legislated in many countries and is being used for risk management in various industries. In China, Malaysia and Singapore, companies using bow-tie technique continuously is being increased. In Korea, however, there have been no successful cases even though some companies have attempted it. In this research, bow-tie was applied to oil refinery company to effectively respond to complex emergency situation, and Barrier review to prevent serious accidents for R&D project of a steel company. Lastly, a serious accident that was conducted by the accident investigation committee at a petrochemical company was investigated again with Bow-tie. Through this research, it was confirmed that bow-tie is effective tool for risk management, so that I expect there will be an opportunity for Korean companies to recognize what efforts should be made to prevent serious industrial accidents.

Organizational culture is a system of shared meaning held by members which distinguishes the organization from other organizations. Every organization is defined and characterized by its own culture and can barely be separated from its culture. Thus, the focus of this paper is on organizational culture transformational leadership style and job performance. Hence, to derive meaningful coverage, this study examines Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). This oil and gas sector plays an important role in the national economic development of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

A Study of the Effects of Exchange Rates on the Stock Companies in the Petrochemical Industry of the Eurozone

Considering the importance of the petrochemical industry as one of the strategic sectors in the eurozone economy, this study aims to evaluate the relationship between exchange rate fluctuations and stock market prices in the eurozone petrochemical industry. This paper applies Jorion’s model and panel regression framework to monthly data spanning from 2002 to 2018. Panel regressions were estimated for three periods: the whole sample, the period before the financial crisis, and the period after the crisis. These divisions allowed for the testing of the persistence of exchange rate exposure in the petrochemical sector over time. This paper provides evidence of the magnitude of the impact of exchange rate shocks. Additionally, this paper shows that the petrochemical sector of the eurozone was exposed to significant exchange rate risk at the 1 percent level during the whole sample period and that this exposure was still present even after we split the test period into the precrisis and postcrisis datasets. However, foreign exchange rate exposure increased after the start of the financial crisis in 2008. The negative coefficient of the variable representing exposure suggests that the depreciation of the euro was followed by an increase in the stock returns of the petrochemical companies in the eurozone.

Analysis of tube bending deformation in petrochemical heater furnace tubes

Serious bending deformation of the tubes was found in the tubular furnace at a petrochemical company. In order to find out its specific reason, Thickness measurement and metallographic analysis were conducted on the problematic part of the furnace tube. Stress analysis by using CAESAR was carried out, in which the working conditions were considered. The results show that the microstructure of the furnace tubes was not abnormal, and there is no overheating, creeping and deterioration damage was existed during operation. Stress analysis show that the primary and secondary stress values of each node were less than the allowable stress for furnace tubes under current condition. However, the secondary stress will exceed the allowable stress when the furnace tube is bended up to 400 mm. Therefore, in order to avoid the replacement of furnace tube and the unnecessary economic loss, the tubes could be used safely under closely monitored after structural rectification.

The polyolefin markets’ susceptibility to innovations in the development of catalytic systems is shown.

Risk assessment of refinery unit maintenance based on fuzzy second generation curvelet neural network

To ensure safety of maintenance of refinery unit and improve reliability of refinery unit, the risk assessment model of refinery unit maintenance is established based on fuzzy second generation curvelet neural network optimized by improved firefly algorithm.Firstly, the fuzzy second generation curvelet neural network is constructed based on second generation curvelet transform, artificial neural network, and fuzzy theory. Secondly, the training algorithm of fuzzy second curvelet neural network is designed based on improved firefly algorithm, the traditional firefly algorithm is improved based on chaotic mapping. And the corresponding algorithm procedure is designed.Finally thirty-five gasoline hydrodesulphurization units of petrochemical companies are used as research objects to carry out risk assessment of maintenance based on the proposed method and other two existing methods, results show that the proposed fuzzy second curvelet neural network has better computing precision and efficiency, which can correctly and efficiently evaluate the risk level of maintenance of refinery unit.

Analysis of Mental and Physical Fatigue Risk Factors in Utility Unit of Petrochemical Company

Introduction: Work exhaustion defined as a tired feeling felt by workers with different symptoms in each individual. In this study work fatigue was divided into two types, namely physical work fatigue and mental work fatigue. This study aims to determine risk factors of physical and mental fatigue on utility unit PT. Trans Pacific Petrochemical Indotama (TPPI) which produces petroleum or gas, as well as the chemical BTX. Methods: This research was an observational study with a cross-sectional method. Based on the problem characteristic and data analysis, this study belongs to analytical research. Data were collected by interview, questionnaires, measurement, and observations. The population is 36 workers and the sample size of this study is 33 respondents from utility unit workers. The sampling technique used simple random sampling. The variables in this study were age, years of service, work duration, workload, heat stress index, responsibility, and support from company’s head. Results: Showed that factors associated with physical and mental fatigue are the age, workloads, work duration, and heat stress index. Conclusion: Physical fatigue and mental fatigue had correlation with age, workloads, work time, and heat stress index. The higher age, workload, work duration, and heat stress index, it will increasingly cause physical and mental fatigue faster and harder.Keywords: fatigue risk factors, mental fatigue work, physical fatigue work

Contamination and natural attenuation characteristics of petroleum hydrocarbons in a fractured karst aquifer, North China.

A rare super-large fractured karst aquifer located in Zibo city, Shandong Province of Northern China was polluted by petroleum hydrocarbons from a petrochemical company. Over the last 30years, it has been the focus of several remediation efforts. In this study, the contamination and natural attenuation characteristics of the petroleum hydrocarbons were elucidated using hydrogeochemical indicators (DO, DOC, Cl-, HCO3-, pH, NO3-, and SO42-), petroleum hydrocarbons elements and environmental isotopes (δ15NNO3, δ18ONO3, δ13CDIC, and δ13CDOC). With the aid of GIS, statistical analyses, as well as first-order decay model and electron-acceptor-limited kinetic model, the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics of the petroleum hydrocarbons were modeled. Results showed a positive natural attenuation trend over the last 3 decades where intrinsic biodegradation mechanism was found to be the most important factor driving the degradation of hydrocarbons in the aquifer system. The hydrogeochemical association between the indicators and petroleum hydrocarbons provided the evidences of biodegradation and also served as markers, highlighting the occurrence of anaerobic respiration without methanogenic activities within the heterogenous karst media. Furthermore, the mean natural attenuation rate of petroleum hydrocarbons was calculated to be 3.76 × 10-3/day whereby the current highest petroleum hydrocarbons concentration (361.13μg/L) is estimated to be degraded completely in 6years under the present hydrogeological and environmental conditions.

The numerous companies nowadays are concerned at the persistence of their competitive positions on the market and, therefore, address to the implementation of digital transformation. Nevertheless, digital transformation is a new phenomenon, and companies on the verge of digitalization are puzzled by the issue of applying the correct approach to managing digital change. This paper highlights the main components of a successful digital transformation approach, and suggests a way to implement a digital transformation for a petrochemical company.

Relation between senior managers’ safety leadership and safety behavior in the Chinese petrochemical industry

Senior managers in organizations are authorized and obliged to maintain organizational safety. However, to date, little research has considered the relation of senior managers' safety leadership to safety behavior. This study addresses this gap by using path analysis to confirm the validity of a hypothetical model that relates six dimensions of senior managers' safety leadership to two safety behaviors through the safety climate in the petrochemical industry. A questionnaire survey was sent randomly to workers (other than senior managers) in two petrochemical companies in China, and data from 155 usable responses were compiled for the path analysis. Results indicate that in the petrochemical industry, senior managers' safety leadership has a positive impact on safety behavior, and the safety climate plays an intermediary role between them. From the perspective of the dimensions of senior managers' safety leadership and safety behavior, safety concern has the greatest positive effect on safety compliance. Moreover, safety vision has the greatest positive impact on safety participation, whereas safety inspiration and safety awards and punishment have negative effects on safety compliance. Personal character does not directly influence any dimension of safety behavior but indirectly does so by influencing the safety climate. On the basis of these results, measures of improving senior managers' safety leadership in the petrochemical industry are presented to help improve the overall safety performance of the industry. A new view is provided for the petrochemical industry in China to suggest that senior managers’ safety leadership can be treated earnestly.

Investments to the petrochemical sector: the value of the competitiveness of petrochemical companies

The article focuses on the dynamics and structure of fixed investments in the Russian Federation in the period of 2011-2019, analyses both the destabilizing factors, and those, having beneficial impact on the use of a wide range of financial mechanisms in financing projects on petrochemical companies’ development. It evaluates the competitiveness of petrochemical companies in the Russian Federation and abroad, for the current period and until 2030, according to the strategy of industry development. It outlines the investment potential of the industry and provides conclusion on the need to develop the use of mechanisms for financing innovative subprojects of petrochemical industry companies. All conclusions in the article are illustrated with relevant examples.

Organizational pride as an antecedent of employee creativity in the petrochemical industry

PurposeThis empirical study aims to explore the impact of two facets of organizational pride (namely, emotional and attitudinal) on employee creativity in petrochemical companies in the Sultanate of Oman.Design/methodology/approachUsing a simple random sample technique, data were collected using a questionnaire from 278 respondents working in five major petrochemical organizations operating in Oman. Data were examined using structural equation modeling.FindingsThe findings revealed that attitudinal organizational pride is the only dimension of organizational pride that has a direct significant positive effect on creativity, while emotional pride does not affect creativity.Research limitations/implicationsThe current study is considered among the pioneering studies in its contextual field. However, despite its importance, it has several limitations. First, this study is limited to the petrochemical sector. Second, the study is limited to two variables: organizational pride and creativity. Last, this study examined creativity as one variable.Practical implicationsAttitudinal organizational pride directly affects employee creativity. Petrochemical managers should consider and enhance attitudinal organizational pride.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature investigating the attitudinal and emotional aspects as facets of organizational pride in relation to employee creativity, and it is the first to do so in the context of the Sultanate of Oman.

Toward an Innovative Green Strategic Formulation Methodology: Empowerment of Corporate Social, Health, Safety and Environment

Nowadays, developing empowering strategies based on health, safety and the environment is one of the most important issues of management in organizations. This research provides a model for the implementation of innovative green strategies model. The model contemplates four topics (e.g., social, environment, health, and safety); three organizational types (e.g. oil, gas and petrochemicals company); four strategies combined model (PESTEL, SWOT, AHP, SPACE). On this basis, 25 outsourcing strategic factors (including 13 opportunities and 12 outsourcing threats) and 21 internal factors (including 7 strengths and 14 weaknesses) were identified. Hence, the strategic elements of the outsourcing and internal have been ranked, and the most important opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses of the organization have been introduced to develop SHSE-based environmental protection. Afterward, using strategic positioning tool and strategy design, 18 strategies have been developed. The results show the Organization of Special Economic Zone of Petrochemicals is strategically positioned in the face of opportunities to threaten and overcome the weak points of strength. Accordingly, using " Weakness-Opportunity Strategies” can be mainly used to take advantage of the opportunities offered to compensate for the weaknesses of the organization.

Assessment of Health Risk of Occupational Exposure to Benzene, Toluene and Ethyl Benzene (BTEX) in One of Mahshahr Petrochemical Companies

Introduction: One of the most important sources of contaminants is chemicals that over time cause severe problems for employees who are exposed to various chemicals in the refining process units. The purpose of this study was to determine the highest level of exposure to BTEX compounds and to assess the health risk caused by exposure of refinery personnel in a Mahshahr petrochemical company.
 Methods: The present descriptive-analytical study was conducted in one of the mahshahr petrochemical companies in 2016-2017. In this study, we first identified the causes of workplace harm by occupational groups. According to NIOSH method number 1501, air sampling and BTEX analysis were performed. To analyze the results, SPSS software was used for data analysis. Finally, the risk assessment was done in accordance with the method number 84101042 of Oil Ministry.
 Results: The results of this study showed that benzene with a mean density of 0.58 ppm in the work area of site man, 0.43 ppm for shift workers and a density of 0.38 ppm for the presence of the supervisor in The location of the station has the highest density of ethyl benzene and toluene. Also, the results of the study showed that the risk level and the risk rating of the pollutants in the petrochemical company (site man) were 66.7% low risk, 8.3% Percentage of high risk and 12.5% of risk are moderate and very high.
 conclusion: According to the results, benzene has the highest health risk of petrochemicals produced in petrochemicals, and due to the high level of exposure to benzene, it is recommended to take corrective and preventive measures to eliminate or reduce its exposure.

A priority oriented nutrition education program to improve nutritional and cardiometabolic status in the workplace: a randomized field trial

BackgroundWorkplace nutrition has been identified as a priority setting that can significantly reduce cardiovascular diseases (CVD) risk factors. This study was conducted as a part of the workplace education program to improve nutritional practices and cardiometabolic status in industrial personnel.MethodsThe present research was a randomized controlled field trial conducted on employees of a regional petrochemical company. The health-related priorities of the program were defined and addressed in the study in which 104 employees with dyslipidemia were randomly divided into two groups of education and control. Data were collected pre- and post-intervention, using valid and reliable multi-session questionnaires on demographic data, nutritional knowledge, and nutritional intake. Anthropometric measures, serum FBS, HbA1C, hs-CRP and homocysteine (Hcy) were assessed in both groups. In the education group, the nutrition program included five educational workshops about healthy nutrition and regular exercise along with educational messages over a 3-month period. The controls did not receive any education during the study.ResultsThere were no statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding the baseline variables. The education group significantly improved their nutritional knowledge (p < 0.001), dietary intakes (p < 0.005), serum FBS (p < 0.001) and Hcy levels (p < 0.001) and anthropometric indices.ConclusionWorkplace nutrition education programs can improve knowledge and reduce important CVD risk factors.
