Panchromatic absorbers for solar light-harvesting.

A set of panchromatic absorbers exhibiting long excited-state lifetimes in both polar and nonpolar media has been prepared. The architectures are based on a porphyrin strongly coupled electronically to 1-4 perylene-monoimides via ethyne linkers. The constructs should find utility in molecular solar-conversion systems.

Facile Transformation of Perylene Tetracarboxylic Acid Dianhydride into Strong Donor–Acceptor Chromophores

An efficient synthesis of 9,10-dibromo-1,6,7,12-tetrachloro-perylene-3,4-dicarboxylic acid monoimides from easily available 1,6,7,12-tetrachloro-perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride is reported. Therefrom, unprecedented perylene monoimides with pronounced donor-acceptor character were obtained via twofold aromatic amination. The halogen substituents in the 1,6,7,12-positions of perylene were removed under basic conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first efficient synthetic route toward 9,10-doubly functionalized perylene-3,4-dicarboxylic acid monoimides.

Synthesis of Perylene Dyes with Multiple Triphenylamine Substituents

Perylene monoimide (PMI) was brominated to give tetra- and tribrominated molecules, which underwent a Suzuki coupling reaction with 4-(diphenylamino)phenylboronic acid to give PMI derivatives. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the synthesized compounds were investigated, and theoretical calculations were performed. Single crystals of tetrasubstituted PMI were grown and studied in detail. The structure-property relationships were examined to reveal the effect of the position and number of substituents on the perylene core unit. All molecules showed a broad absorption up to 750 nm. Corresponding anhydrides of PMIs were used for fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells. The molecule with four triphenylamine units on perylene monoanhydride showed the highest power conversion efficiency.

Doubly and Triply Linked Porphyrin−Perylene Monoimides as Near IR Dyes with Large Dipole Moments and High Photostability

Doubly and triply linked porphyrin-perylene monoimides 3 and 4, with extraordinary stability, large dipole moments, and strong near IR absorption, were prepared by means of one-pot oxidative cyclodehydrogenation promoted by FeCl(3).

Self-Assembly, Dynamics, and Phase Transformation Kinetics of Donor−Acceptor Substituted Perylene Derivatives

The role of alkyl chain substitution on the phase formation and core dynamics is studied in a series of diphenylamine functionalized perylenemonoimides (PMIs), by X-ray scattering, calorimetry and site-specific solid-state NMR techniques. In addition, the strong dipole associated with the donor-acceptor character of the molecules allow an investigation of the dynamics with dielectric spectroscopy. The self-assembly revealed an ordered phase only in PMIs with branched alkyl chains. This phase comprises a helical stacking of molecules with a molecular twist angle of 60 degrees. Results from solid-state NMR further pointed out the importance of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in stabilizing the intracolumnar packing within the ordered phase. Moreover, the core dynamics are frozen as revealed by the value of the dynamic order parameters and the reduced strength of dipolar relaxation. The kinetics of phase transformation from the isotropic to the ordered phase proceeds via a nucleation and growth mechanism, and the rates are dominated by the nucleation barrier. Within the isotropic phase the core dynamics display strong temperature dependence with rates that depend on the number of methylene units in the alkyl chains.

Probing Intramolecular Förster Resonance Energy Transfer in a Naphthaleneimide−Peryleneimide−Terrylenediimide-Based Dendrimer by Ensemble and Single-Molecule Fluorescence Spectroscopy

We report on the ensemble and single-molecule (SM) dynamics of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) in a multichromophoric rigid polyphenylenic dendrimer (triad) with spectrally different rylene chromophores featuring distinct absorption and emission spectra which cover the whole visible spectral range: a terrylenediimide (TDI) core, four perylenemonoimides (PMIs) attached at the scaffold, and eight naphthalenemonoimides (NMIs) at the rim. For FRET from PMI to TDI taking place with an efficiency of 99.5%, single triad molecules optically excited at 490 nm show fluorescence exclusively from the TDI side in the beginning of their emission. On 360-nm excitation, NMI chromophores transfer their excitation energy either directly or in a stepwise fashion to the core TDI, the latter case involving scaffold-substituted PMIs as intermediate acceptors. Indeed, SM experiments on 360-nm excitation evidence highly efficient FRET from NMI chromophores to the TDI core since individual triad molecules show fluorescence exclusively either from TDI or from an intermediate (oxidized) species but never from PMI. Because PMI and TDI are chromophores with high fluorescence quantum yields and high resistance to photobleaching compared to NMI, 360-nm excitation of a single triad molecule leads to bleaching of NMI chromophores with no chance for PMI to be observed. The spatial positioning and the spectral properties of the chosen rylene chromophores make this multichromophoric system an efficient light collector, able to capture light over the whole visible spectral range and to transfer it finally to the core TDI, the latter releasing it as red fluorescence.
