Sustainable Development Perspective: Analysis of Capture Fisheries in Muncar District Banyuwangi

Capture fisheries resources in Muncar Regency have enormous potential to support the lives of the community, especially fishermen. However, in these conditions, the volume of capture fisheries production in Muncar Regency has decreased. This research aims to direct sustainable development efforts in the capture fisheries subsector so that it can improve the welfare of fishermen. This is done by optimizing the use of fishery resources without ignoring economic, ecological (environmental), and social aspects. This research uses descriptive analysis methods. The results of measuring the level of sustainability of capture fisheries resources in Muncar District show that the average value is still low. From each dimension (economic, social, and environmental) several criteria have medium (M) and high (H) scores. This means that each dimension requires alternative recommendations to support sustainable capture fisheries development. It takes synergy from all levels of society to maintain the balance of the marine ecosystem. Increasing awareness of coastal communities is needed to maintain the balance of the capture fisheries resource ecosystem. Apart from that improving the quality of human resources in fishing communities is an important thing that the government can do to support the sustainable development of capture fisheries resources. Governance Policy on The Impact of Marble Mining Activities in Tulungagung Regency Reviewed from the Perspective of Sustainable Development

This research aims to analyze governance policies on the impact of marble mining activities in Tulungagung Regency from a sustainable development perspective. Marble mining activities in this area have significant environmental, social and economic impacts. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews with stakeholders, field observations, and analysis of related policy documents. The research results show that although there have been efforts to integrate sustainable development principles in marble mining governance policies, implementation still faces various challenges. Some of these include a lack of supervision and law enforcement, as well as limitations in community participation. This study recommends increasing the capacity of management institutions, strengthening community participation, and increasing coordination between sectors as strategic steps to increase the sustainability of marble mining activities in Tulungagung Regency.

The Contributions of Creativity to the Learning Process within Educational Approaches for Sustainable Development and/or Ecosocial Perspectives: A Systematic Review

This systematic review identifies the contributions of creativity to learning and its integration into teaching within educational approaches with an ecosocial and/or sustainable perspective based on scientific publications in the Web of Science and SCOPUS databases, following the PRISMA methodology guidelines. This study establishes a comprehensive understanding of creativity from a sociocultural perspective and examines the relationship between creativity and educational approaches based on sustainable education. The results highlight that creativity is incorporated into teaching in a cross-cutting manner in the ideation, design, and implementation of pedagogical strategies that include diverse techniques, resources, and methodologies. Creativity contributes to learning by being multifaceted and transforming the student experience through the identification, understanding, appropriation, and applicability of concepts. Various strategies and methodologies are identified that promote creativity by involving students in collaborative and reflective processes. Creativity stimulates imagination, interdisciplinary and intercultural integration, and experimentation. The fundamental role of the teacher and the learning environment is emphasized. Finally, the need to integrate creativity into educational plans from these approaches is highlighted, fostering the adaptability to uncertainty and the generation of creative and sustainable responses. This review provides a synthesized and updated resource for teachers and individuals interested in the relationship between creativity, learning, and sustainability.

Spatiotemporal Evolution and Drivers of Carbon Storage from a Sustainable Development Perspective: A Case Study of the Region along the Middle and Lower Yellow River, China

Carbon storage (C-storage) is a critical indicator of ecosystem services, and it plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and driving sustainability. Its assessment provides essential insights for enhancing environmental protection, optimizing land use, and formulating policies that support long-term ecological and economic sustainability. Previous research on C-storage in the Yellow River Basin has mainly concentrated on the spatiotemporal fluctuations of C-storage and the investigation of natural influencing factors. However, research combining human activity factors to explore the influences on C-storage is limited. In this paper, based on the assessment of the spatiotemporal evolution of C-storage in the region along the Middle and Lower Yellow River (MLYR), the influences of anthropogenic and natural factors on C-storage were explored from the perspective of sustainable development. The findings reflected the relationship between socio-economic activities and the ecological environment from a sustainable development perspective, providing important scientific evidence for the formulation of sustainability policies in the region. We noticed the proportion of arable land was the highest, reaching 40%. The increase of construction land because of the fast urbanization mainly came from arable land and grassland. During the past 15 years, the cumulative loss of C-storage was 71.17 × 106 t. The high-value of C-storage was primarily situated in hilly areas, and the area of C-storage hotspots was shrinking. The aggregation effect of low-value C-storage was strengthening, while that of high-value C-storage was weakening. The dominant factors (q > 0.5) influencing the spatiotemporal variation of C-storage in the region along the Middle Yellow River (MYR) were temperature and precipitation, while the primary factor in the region along the Lower Yellow River (LYR) was temperature. Overall, meteorological factors were the main determinants across the entire study area. Additionally, compared to the MYR, anthropogenic factors had a smaller impact on the spatiotemporal evolution of C-storage in the LYR, but their influence has been increasing over time.

Exploring the interplay between adult sustainability attitudes, psychological wellness, affinity for nature, and interest in scientific topics

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the psychological concept of nature attachment and its relationship with pro-environmental views and psychological wellbeing. Understanding the general public's involvement in scientific matters is also crucial for comprehending scientific research. The researchers set out to chart the connections between adults' affinity to environment, their interest in science, their views on sustainability, and their mental health. In particular, the research set out to investigate the interplay between these factors by testing theory-based hypotheses using structural equation modelling (SEM). A stratified population was created using the probability corresponding to size sampling technique. The population was divided into strata based on relevant characteristics, and systematic sampling was employed within each stratum, taking into account its size relative to the overall population. The study included 436 participants, ranging in age from 19 to 75, who were citizens. The findings of the study revealed a direct relationship between adult nature attachment and adult scientific curiosity. Furthermore, adult scientific curiosity was found to have a direct relationship with sustainability attitudes and psychological wellbeing. Additionally, the analysis indicated that participant attitudes towards sustainability were somewhat and indirectly mediated by adult interest in scientific subjects. The study provided valuable insights into the connections between adults' interest in scientific concerns, connection to nature, sustainability attitudes, and psychological wellbeing. The results demonstrated that individuals who exhibited higher levels of nature attachment and scientific curiosity were more likely to hold favourable sustainable perspectives and report better mental health. The present research contributes to the corpus of expertise by outlining a paradigm that emphasises how scientific involvement affects the views of individuals and welfare.

Toward industry 5.0: Challenges and enablers of intelligent manufacturing technology implementation under the perspective of sustainability

The advancement of intelligent manufacturing technology in the era of Industry 5.0 has propelled the intelligence and automation of manufacturing production, while also exerting a significant impact on sustainable development of the manufacturing industry. However, the challenges and enablers faced by the transformation of intelligent manufacturing technology in the context of sustainable development of Industry 5.0 are still unclear. Based on literature review and expert opinions, this study uses the Likert scale to determine the challenges and enablers of the implementation of intelligent manufacturing technology in social, environmental and economic sustainability. The fuzzy-DEMETAL and AISM are used to analyze the logical relationship and hierarchical relationship between the above factors, and the MICMAC matrix is used to determine the key influencing factors. The research conclusions show that the most important challenges affecting the implementation of intelligent manufacturing technology are cost and funding, and the most important enabler is social benefits and public service improved. This research will provide insights for industry practitioners and decision makers in the management and decision-making process of implementing the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing intelligent manufacturing, thereby enhancing the sustainability of manufacturing development.

Product Quality in the Circular Economy: A Systematic Review of its Definition and Contexts in Scientific Literature

AbstractIn the context of the Circular Economy (CE), quality is one of the most widely used keywords, but generally perceived as an ambiguous term without further definition or explanation. The present paper analyzes the use of the term product quality in the context of the CE through a systematic literature review including 132 peer-reviewed journal articles. The results reveal that the term quality, although not always explicitly defined, is associated with a variety of topics, namely market value, customer perspective, functionality, technical attributes, longevity, R-strategies and design, and environmental aspects. The aforementioned topics are used in different application contexts and partly show reciprocal relationships amongst each other. They further refer to the three sustainability perspectives (environmental, economic and social). The quantification of quality is observed to be rather limited and mainly based on assumptions. When it is quantified, technical properties, functionality and longevity are most frequently mentioned aspects, which are used within circularity or environmental impact assessment. While acknowledging the limitations arising from the scope of the included studies, which may be influenced by the keywords chosen, the review revealed that quality in the CE literature is complex and ambiguous. Therefore, for future research, we recommend authors to clearly define quality and its characteristics in the context of their respective research. By doing so, a better interpretation and comparability of the results can be achieved. Graphical Abstract

A Novel Multiperspective and Multistakeholder Approach to Event Impact Measurement: Synthesizing the Triple Bottom Line

Due to the increasing number of events and the complexity of the relationships and synergies between the stakeholders involved in the events and the environment there is a need to understand the contribution of events to the area where they are hosted. This article aims to develop an innovative impact assessment system that allows the effects of the event to be assessed from a global sustainability perspective via a multistakeholder approach and tries to solve the problems of comparability and commensurability raised by integrating economic, sociocultural, and environmental impacts. This novel impact assessment method creates an ad hoc synthetic index unique for each event. The impact categories are aggregated and weighted according to the specific realities of the region. This theoretical contribution involves measuring event impacts through a multiperspective and multistakeholder analytical methodology, allowing the effects to be more efficiently assessed and compared in monetary terms.

The research paper delves into the implementation of sustainable architectural design practices at Puri Brata Resort & Gallery in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The primary objective of the study is to analyze the impact of eco-friendly design principles on both the environment and visitor experience within the resort. Data collection for this research involved conducting a comprehensive survey among visitors to the resort, focusing on aspects such as air quality, temperature control, and overall visitor comfort. Additionally, data was gathered on the utilization of green spaces within the resort and the incorporation of local cultural values and aesthetics in the architectural design. The survey responses were then analyzed to evaluate the perceived impact of sustainable design elements on the guest experience and environmental sustainability. Analysis and Comparison of Three Bending Tests on Phosphogypsum-Based Material According to Peridynamic Theory

Phosphogypsum-based materials have gained much attention in the field of road infrastructure from the economic and sustainable perspectives. The Three-point bending test, the Four-point bending test and the Semi-circular bending test are three typical test methods applied for fracture energy measurement. However, the optimal test method for fracture energy evaluation has not been determined for phosphogypsum-based materials. To contribute to the gap, this study aims to analyze and compare the three test methods for fracture energy evaluation of phosphogypsum materials based on the peridynamic theory. For this purpose, the load–displacement, vertical displacement–Crack Mouth Opening Displacement (CMOD) and fracture energy of the phosphogypsum-based materials were measured and calculated from the three test methods. The simulated load–displacement and vertical displacement–CMOD by PD numerical models, with different fracture energy as inputs, were compared to the corresponding tested values according to simulation error results. The results showed that the Four-point bending test led to minimized errors lower than 0.189 and indicators lower than 0.124, demonstrating the most optimal test method for the fracture energy measurement of phosphogypsum-based material. The results of this study can provide new methodological references for the selection of material fracture energy measurement tests.

A parametric life cycle framework to promote sustainable-by-design product development: Application to a hydrogen production technology

The European Ecodesign Directive is an effective normative framework that has been extensively proven to support the energy transition of numerous European industrial sectors. From an analytical standpoint, it provides practitioners with the EcoReport tool, a simplified life cycle spreadsheet that is aimed at guiding the development of ecodesign measures of mandatory compliance in European countries. In this regard, several studies have highlighted the limitations of the EcoReport tool when addressing emerging technologies like those tied to the hydrogen sector. These works also propose to further integrate material criticality and social metrics in order to enlarge the scope of the European Directive and foster the shift from ecodesign to sustainable-by-design product development. In this situation, building upon the principles of the EcoReport tool and recognizing the outcomes of the aforementioned critical analyses, the conceptualization of a novel sustainable-by-design framework is presented and applied to a Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) stack for hydrogen production. The operationalization of the framework is conducted, for the first time in the context of sustainable design, by combining the use of the Brightway2 and lca_algebraic Python packages. Overall, the proposed approach succeeds in providing a complete sustainability perspective to the design of emerging technologies. Regarding the tangible lessons learned on the hydrogen-related case study, product concepts are proven to progressively improve the sustainability performance of the technology. It is noticeable that the enhancement of the economic competitivity is more limited than that achieved at the remaining sustainability indicators (i.e., environmental, social and material criticality metrics). In line with the outcomes of the life cycle contribution assessment, multi-criteria decision analysis ratings lead to concluding that a sustainable-by-design SOEC stack product concept should prioritize limiting its material intensity.

Performance of traditional Chinese courtyard buildings from a sustainability perspective and implications for contemporary green building design

Climate change, resource depletion, and biodiversity decline have prompted the construction industry to seek more sustainable solutions. While high-tech and often high-cost technologies and equipment support progress toward more sustainable built form, the sustainability performance of historical and vernacular buildings should also be reviewed. These buildings may offer advantages that are “hidden in plain sight.” This research focuses on the use of building information modeling technology to model and simulate a historical Chinese courtyard building. The outcomes of the simulation were evaluated using the green building council of Australia’s green star rating criteria to provide quantitative results. At the same time, relevant literature was explored to obtain a qualitative perspective. The final results indicate that courtyard buildings can serve as useful references for contemporary building design and retrofitting. The choice of building materials offers designers effective ideas for designing sustainable buildings. Courtyards can enhance ventilation, cooling, humidity control, light exposure, and connectivity to outdoor areas while ensuring privacy. In developing countries, this approach may be a viable way to promote sustainable development and energy conservation.

Optimizing the Performance of Window Frames: A Comprehensive Review of Materials in China

As the construction industry places increasing emphasis on environmental conservation and sustainability, this trend has spurred profound research into the optimization of door and window performance. One of the critical components of windows is their frames. Over the past several decades, the design of window frames has undergone significant innovations, ranging from introducing new materials to novel design concepts. The performance of window frames is typically influenced by materials, structural design, and the surrounding environment. Consequently, this paper analyzes the common window frame materials in Chinese civil buildings through investigation. It explores commonly used types of window frames available in the market, focusing on their materials and structural designs. It analyzes issues observed during their usage, integrates findings from existing research, and discusses the performance of window frame materials. Additionally, it explores improvement strategies to meet the evolving demands of contemporary and future architectural doors and windows, providing valuable reference points for designers. Finally, approaching the discussion from a sustainable development perspective, the paper evaluates the environmental impact of wood, aluminum alloy, polymer, and composite window frame materials. It emphasizes that wood- and aluminum-clad wood windows represent sustainable options with versatile applications in diverse scenarios.

Sustainable development perspectives in Nordic physical education curricula: a cross-country comparison of the status and pre-conditions

ABSTRACT In the present study, we present a cross-country comparison of the status and condition of sustainable development (SD) in the Nordic physical education (PE) curricula. The aim of the study was to increase knowledge of how SD perspectives are represented and conceptualised in the Nordic PE curricula. An expert-driven research approach was used where representatives from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden provided country overviews and completed surveys to elaborate on the status, pre-conditions, prospect/future, and research initiatives in relation to SD in PE. The study shows that SD perspectives seldom are explicitly mentioned in the Nordic PE curricula, and that little is known regarding how PE teachers understand SD in relation to PE goals and content in their countries. Suggestions on specific SD goals to focus on in Nordic PE, as well as suggestions on future research are provided and discussed in the paper.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) Materials Based on Earth-Abundant Transition Metal Complexes: Synthesis, Design and Applications.

Materials exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based on transition metal complexes are currently gathering significant attention due to their technological potential. Their application extends beyond optoelectronics, in particular organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), and include also photocatalysis, sensing, and X-ray scintillators. From the perspective of sustainability, earth-abundant metal centers are preferred to rarer second- and third-transition series elements, thus determining a reduction in costs and toxicity but without compromising the overall performances. This review offers an overview of earth-abundant transition metal complexes exhibiting TADF and their application as photoconversion materials. Particular attention is devoted to the types of ligands employed, helping in the design of novel systems with enhanced TADF properties.

Transition Design as a Strategy for Post-Pandemic Spatial Experience Enhancement: A Sustainability Perspective

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly altered our perception of spatial experience, presenting new challenges and opportunities for sustainable development. This study adopts a transition design perspective to explore innovative strategies for enhancing spatial experiences in the post-pandemic era, underscoring the central role of sustainability in this process. By integrating expert interviews, stakeholder participation, and qualitative analysis, this research delves into the impacts of the pandemic on spatial design and identifies key challenges and opportunities. It proposes a series of innovative strategies, such as optimizing spatial layouts, incorporating smart technologies, augmenting with natural elements, and promoting modular design, aimed at creating safer, smarter, more comfortable, and sustainable spatial experiences. This study not only provides new insights into spatial experience design in the post-pandemic era but also underscores the potential of transition design in facilitating societal transformation and achieving sustainability goals, providing actionable insights and directions for future research.

Integrating Digital Technologies in Sustainability Accounting and Reporting: Perceptions of Professional Cloud Computing Users

The configuration of economic development, through complexity, rhythm, and amplitude, imposed Industry 4.0 as a new industrial paradigm characterized by advanced digitalization and automation. Appropriate behavior of organizations from a sustainable perspective and the expansion of performance evaluations by considering economic–financial, social, and environmental aspects supposed the reconsideration of the role of accounting in reporting, advice on risk management, and determination of organizational policies. The application of digital technologies in sustainability accounting and reporting requires mapping the attributes of Industry 4.0 and the collection, processing, and reporting of financial and non-financial information. The purpose of this research consists of a correlative analysis of the impact of sustainable development constraints and Industry 4.0 on sustainability accounting and reporting. To collect information, we developed a semi-structured questionnaire, distributed to the members of The Romanian Chamber of Fiscal Consultants. The data have been processed using correlation and regression analysis. The odds of achieving a higher quality of information provided to stakeholders are greater for those interested in digital transformation, sustainable accounting and reporting digitization, while ensuring data protection and security. In the case of cloud computing users, the digitalization of sustainability accounting and reporting were identified as key factors in the process.

Biodiesel Sustainability: Review of Progress and Challenges of Biodiesel as Sustainable Biofuel

Biodiesel, an environmentally degradable and renewable biofuel derived from organic matter, has exhibited its capacity as a viable and sustainable substitute for traditional diesel fuel. Numerous comprehensive investigations have been conducted to assess the effects of biodiesel on internal combustion engines (ICEs), with particular emphasis on diesel engine performance metrics, combustion dynamics, and emission profiles. Biodiesel demonstrates a significant decrease in emissions of particulate matter (PM), hydrocarbon (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO) in diesel engines. The addition of biodiesel has shown a minor decrease in power output and a slight increase in fuel consumption and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Nevertheless, the extensive implementation of biodiesel, despite its potential to effectively reduce detrimental emissions, has encountered obstacles stemming from external influences including restricted availability of feedstock, volatile petroleum oil prices, and inadequate governmental backing. This review presents a concise summary of significant advancements in the global adoption of biodiesel from a sustainability perspective. This review provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with the advancement of sustainable biofuel technologies by synthesizing the current state of palm biodiesel and examining global trends in biodiesel implementation. The wider adoption of biodiesel can be facilitated by addressing concerns pertaining to feedstock availability, price stability, and policy support. This would allow for the realization of significant environmental advantages and contribute to a more environmentally friendly and sustainable biofuel.

Slovenia’s social sustainability achievements: An examination of local perspectives and satisfaction levels

Slovenia is regarded as a nation which has prioritized green innovations, social responsibility, and its commitment to sustainable development. Although Slovenia’s environmental achievements have received national visibility, local awareness of its social sustainability initiatives has been limited. This study examined perspectives and satisfaction levels among residents regarding Slovenia’s social sustainability achievements and associated sustainable development goals (4, 10, and 16). Utilizing a survey, these perceptions were assessed among respondents from three distinct regions–Ljubljana, Novo Mesto, and Koper, respectively. Frequency tests indicated that quality education, ethnic integration, and effective governance/partnerships were perceived as being important to achieving social sustainability. From a Chi-square analysis, a positive correlation was revealed between educational level and knowledge of national sustainability initiatives. A Spearman’s rho test showed that age had an influence on satisfaction with ethnic integration. The study provides insights into the social sustainability perspectives of Slovene society and offers implications for future research.
