Dynamic Interpersonal Processes at Work: Taking Social Interactions Seriously

Dynamic interpersonal processes are the core foundation of many phenomena of interest to organizational psychology and organizational behavior scholars. This article views the organization as a system of social interaction. From this vantage point, I present a selective review of the current literature that supports a behavioral interaction perspective of interpersonal processes at work. I organize insights into phenomena such as (emergent) leadership, team processes, change management, coaching, selection, and negotiation according to the respective interaction constellation (i.e., dyadic, group, or across the organizational boundary). For each of these constellations, I highlight key empirical insights into behavioral interaction dynamics at the core of each interpersonal phenomenon. I discuss gaps and derive commonalities across different interaction constellations. To promote the consistent pursuit of a social interaction perspective and theory-method alignment, I derive a future research agenda including methodological recommendations for identifying meaningful patterns of social interaction at work.

"But when I come home…": How patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain account for their absent pain during naturally occurring clinical consultations.

When patients' embodied experiences cannot be conveyed to clinicians in real-time, the challenges of reaching a shared understanding between patient and clinician are enhanced. In this study, we explore how patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain manage the situation of knowing that they regularly experience pain, yet exhibit minimal signs of it during clinical consultations. Utilizing a multimethod, conversation analysis approach and an interactional perspective, this paper analyzes 10 naturally occurring consultations at a specialized rehabilitation clinic in Norway. The analysis shows that patients account for the absence of pain by referring to i) specific events, ii) pain tolerance, and iii) pain periods. Such accounts were typically triggered by null findings (i.e., the absence of findings in technological and physical tests) in the physical examination and clinicians' positive summaries of patients' bodily conditions. Patients resist clinicians' positive stance by accounting for absent pain, cautiously challenging the clinicians' epistemic stance. If clinicians do not pursue patients' accounts, this might lead to a misalignment between patient and clinician which can obstruct efforts to reach a shared understanding of the pain. These findings may have general relevance for clinical consultations where patients' symptoms are difficult to measure and validate biomedically. Understanding how patients account for absent pain can enhance clinician-patient communication and improve clinicians' understanding of patients' everyday circumstances and thereby improve the outcome of consultations.

The study made Taylor Swift's concert tour, known as "The Eras Tour," a research case to explore the trend of friendship bracelets and their impact on the shared identity of the fan community. The inspiration for this trend comes from the lyrics of the song "You're on Your Own, Kid" from Taylor Swift's album "Midnights", which creates a deep connection between music, symbols, and fans. A qualitative research method with a case study approach through content analysis was used to understand the significance of the symbolic interactionism perspective in the friendship bracelet trend. The results of the study revealed that the friendship bracelet is not only a physical accessory, but also a symbol of solidarity in the Taylor Swift fan community. This friendship bracelet not only marks membership in the community, but also becomes a medium for sharing meaning and building relationships between individuals. Friendship bracelets play a central role in shaping the shared identity of the fan community. With the adoption of friendship bracelets as a symbol of solidarity, a sense of unity in diversity is created. The process of interpreting friendship bracelets involves sharing meaning among fans through social media and face-to-face interactions. Friendship bracelets become more than just physical objects, but rather shared narratives that enrich the experiences of individuals in the community. Furthermore, friendship bracelets serve as a tool to build relationships among fans who have not previously known each other. With this trend of friendship bracelets, social interaction in the community has become wider. The friendship bracelet becomes the glue of the community, helping to form a collective identity narrative that affirms the existence and uniqueness of Taylor Swift fans. This identity continues to evolve along with the adoption and interpretation of the symbol, creating a strong foundation for solidarity within the community. This research provides an in-depth understanding of the role of symbols and communication in shaping the identity of the fan community in the digital era. Keywords: friendship bracelet trend, Taylor Swift, The Eras Tour, symbolic interactionism, community communication

Computational optical imaging: on the convergence of physical and digital layers

Optical imaging has traditionally relied on hardware to fulfill its imaging function, producing output measures that mimic the original objects. Developed separately, digital algorithms enhance or analyze these visual representations, rather than being integral to the imaging process. The emergence of computational optical imaging has blurred the boundary between hardware and algorithm, incorporating computation in silico as an essential step in producing the final image. It provides additional degrees of freedom in system design and enables unconventional capabilities and greater efficiency. This mini-review surveys various perspectives of such interactions between physical and digital layers. It discusses the representative works where dedicated algorithms join the specialized imaging modalities or pipelines to achieve images of unprecedented quality. It also examines the converse scenarios where hardware, such as optical elements and sensors, is engineered to perform image processing, partially or fully replacing computer-based counterparts. Finally, the review highlights the emerging field of end-to-end optimization, where optics and algorithms are co-designed using differentiable models and task-specific loss functions. Together, these advancements provide an overview of the current landscape of computational optical imaging, delineating significant progress while uncovering diverse directions and potential in this rapidly evolving field.

Modeling Consequences of Brand Authenticity in Anthropomorphized AI-Assistants: A Human-Robot Interaction Perspective

The emergence of anthropomorphized AI Assistants can be linked to the advanced convergence of machine learning and natural language processing algorithms that could mimic human brains. Conversational-AI has led users to expect a sense of authenticity in their anthropomorphized assistants, more so, in a social context; which creates newer avenues for brands to better connect with their consumers. The present study aimed to develop a consequential model of AI-authenticity while drawing inferences from a series of human-robot interaction based theories, viz. “Computers as Social Actors” (CASA); “Media Equation” (ME), “Stereotype Content Model” (SCM) and “Socio-Cognitive Computational Trust” (SCCT) theory. Partial-Least-Square based Structural-Equation-Modeling was performed to examine the hypothesized framework; while, bootstrapping technique was utilized to better assess the effect of mediation analysis. The predictive relevance of the developed model was evaluated based on cross-validated redundancy approach. The findings designated ‘Emotional Attachment’, ‘Customer Engagement’ and ‘Cognitive Trust’ as major consequences of brand authenticity; while ‘warmth’was accounted as a positive, but weak mediator in authenticity-cognitive trust relationship, due to probable effects of uncanny valley phenomenon. ‘Cognitive Trust’remained a significant predictor of ‘continuous usage intentions’and ‘word-of[1]mouth’ behaviour. The proposed AI-authenticity framework could aid underpinning effective customer retention and extension strategies.

Time's Sublimest Target: Practices of Forgetting in HCI and CSCW

In our contemporary moment, there exists a hegemonic design practice and a general social desire to retain information. With the help of sociotechnical platforms and other contemporary technologies, information has changed its temporal and spatial boundaries, creating unbounded, algorithmic, and emergent forms of retention. The consequences of such retention are numerous, ranging from an overabundance of autobiographical information that cannot be fully understood by the individual to the improper use and economization of such information by state and corporation alike. Within this context, this paper investigates a counter-hegemonic practice of forgetting, specifically from the perspective of human-computer interaction and computer-supported cooperative work research, with additional insight drawn from adjacent fields. In doing so, we present forgetting as a significant area of research with HCI and CSCW, a burgeoning and contradictory space that may offer solutions to issues we face within a moment of persistence by default. This paper also explores potential directions for future research and design on forgetting in HCI and CSCW through an investigation of an art piece by Chinese artist Song Dong.

Spatiotemporal‐Behavior‐Based Neighborhood Interaction Opportunities and Subjective Neighborhood Perception in Mixed‐Housing Neighborhoods: A Case Study of Fuzhou, China

ABSTRACTResearch on residential spatial segregation has been increasingly emphasized by urban planners and geographers. This study delves into the long‐debated social effects of mixed‐housing neighborhood policies, focusing on the crucial aspect of social integration among residents. Our empirical research, conducted in Fuzhou, China, involves a comprehensive analysis of residents' spatiotemporal behavior across different housing types. By examining 48‐h activity diaries and socioeconomic questionnaires, and assessing neighborhood spatiotemporal opportunities for socializing, we aim to shed light on the relationship between objective and subjective perspectives of interaction. The influencing factors were revealed based on multiple linear regression modeling. Our findings reveal that residents of affordable housing exhibit higher levels of social interaction opportunities, whereas those in commercial housing demonstrate greater willingness to interact with neighbors. Moreover, residents' spatiotemporal behavior has a greater impact on the results of objective measures of neighborhood interaction opportunities, especially indicators related to shopping activities. In terms of policy recommendations, the study suggests organizing more community activities, improving the built environment, and enriching various consumption spaces around neighborhoods to foster interactions among residents of different housing types.

A Domain Adaptive Interpretable Substructure-Aware Graph Attention Network for Drug-Drug Interaction Prediction.

Accurate prediction of drug-drug interaction (DDI) is essential to improve clinical efficacy, avoid adverse effects of drug combination therapy, and enhance drug safety. Recently researchers have developed several computer-aided methods for DDI prediction. However, these methods lack the substructural features that are critical to drug interactions and are not effective in generalizing across domains and different distribution data. In this work, we present SAGAN, a domain adaptive interpretable substructure-aware graph attention network for DDI prediction. Based on attention mechanism and unsupervised clustering algorithm, we propose a new substructure segmentation method, which segments the drug molecule into multiple substructures, learns the mechanism of drug interaction from the perspective of interaction, and identifies important interaction regions between drugs. To enhance the generalization ability of the model, we improve and apply a conditional domain adversarial network to achieve cross-domain generalization by alternately optimizing the cross-entropy loss on the source domain and the adversarial loss of the domain discriminator. We evaluate and compare SAGAN with the state-of-the-art DDI prediction model on four real-world datasets for both in-domain and cross-domain scenarios, and show that SAGAN achieves the best overall performance. Moreover, the visualization results of the model show that SAGAN has achieved pharmacologically significant substructure extraction, which can help drug developers screen for some undiscovered local interaction sites, and provide important information for further drug structure optimization. The codes and datasets are available online at https://github.com/wyx2012/SAGAN .

Mapping interaction in short-term study abroad

Abstract The variability of speaking proficiency outcomes in study abroad (SA) is often thought of as confounding, as conclusions regarding even the most basic assumptions are not agreed upon. While instruments such as language contact and social network surveys shed light on target language engagement, comparisons across studies are often obscured by individual differences, SA program variability, and differences in study design and instruments. Qualitative approaches to understanding learners’ contexts for interaction can provide a fuller picture of what actually occurs during SA. From an interactionist perspective centering learners’ reflections about their interactions in journals, this article presents ten university students’ experiences in an eight-week language program in Turkey. The program’s unstructured nature (no language pledge or homestay) allowed for diverse interactional patterns to emerge. Findings highlight the central role of service encounters in providing learner access to speaking opportunities.

Vacancy and Low-Energy 3p-Orbital Endow Na4Fe3(PO4)2(P2O7) Cathode with Superior Sodium Storage Kinetics.

Iron-based phosphate Na4Fe3(PO4)2(P2O7) (NFPP) has been regarded as the most promising cathode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) thanks to its cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness. However, it is in a predicament from the intrinsic low ionic/electronic conductivity, becoming a great challenge for its practical application. Herein, the significant roles of the low-energy 3p-orbital and transition metal vacancies are emphasized in facilitating charge rearrangement and reconstructing ion-diffusion channels, from the perspectives of crystallography and electron interaction for the first time, and the modification mechanism is fully explored by various characterizations and theoretical calculations. As proof of this concept, the designed Na4Fe2.85Al0.1(PO4)2(P2O7) (NF2.85A0.1PP) delivers prominent electrochemical performance, achieving high energy density (≈350Wh kg⁻¹), superior kinetics (62 mAh g⁻¹ at 10 A g⁻¹), excellent power density (23kW kg⁻¹, 143Wh kg⁻¹), and extraordinary cycling stability (with negligible attenuation after 10000 cycles). This work provides a brand-new perspective for designing ultra-endurable high-rate polyanion cathodes.

Dinamika Kehidupan Sosial Masyarakat Pedesaan: Analisis dari Perspektif Sosiologi

This study examines the dynamics of rural social life from a sociological perspective using structural-functional, conflict, and symbolic interactionist theories. The findings reveal that rural communities are characterized by mutual cooperation, dependence on the agrarian sector, and strong social solidarity. However, modernization brings challenges, such as shifts in traditional values and intergenerational conflicts. Structural-functional theory illustrates social stability through mechanisms like mutual cooperation, while conflict theory highlights social change driven by group tensions. The symbolic interactionist perspective explains how individuals create and modify values through daily interactions. This study provides an in-depth understanding of rural social dynamics and serves as a guide for inclusive sustainable development policies in rural communities.

The Influence of Culture on Identity Development: A Symbolic Interactionism Study

Introduction: Psychologists increasingly see culture as vital in defining our sense of self. Though many theoretical perspectives exist on how culture impacts one’s identity, this research seeks to justify these claims and contribute to the existing empirical data. Methodology: The current research used a qualitative methodology through thematic analysis and semi-structured interviews to justify the claims that culture influences one's identity through a symbolic interactionism perspective. The participants in the study were four psychology students at a Higher Education Institution (HEI) in the United Kingdom. They were interviewed with the focus theme question, ‘How does culture shape our identity?’ The combined transcribed responses were used as the basis for this research study on culture and its implications in shaping one's identity through self, identity, and culture—findings: The results indicated that culture is an imperative theme that defines one's self–construal. The culture in which people are born may be viewed as a psychological phenomenon impacting how they define their identity. Culture and the development of self intertwine in explaining a person’s behaviours. The identity of self–development is responsible for framing humans' mental lexicon and their cultural perspectives.

Desafios à Inclusão Substantiva nas Organizações: Um Estudo Fenomenológico com Surdos

ABSTRACT Objective: in this study, we seek to understand, from a substantive perspective of analysis, the process of inclusion/exclusion of deaf individuals in organizations. Theoretical approach: we introduce the discussion based on the inclusion-exclusion process and the need to listen to what included subjects have to say. As the results (essences) are presented, some important concepts are discussed: deaf culture, identity and ‘deafhood’; social organization; and communicational action. Taking the interactionist perspective as a basis, which highlights communication and intersubjectively shared language, the confrontation between the symbolic universes of the deaf and the hearing is brought into discussion as ultimate challenges to inclusion. Method: we adopted phenomenology as a methodological horizon to analyze the deaf workers’ lived experience in an industrial unit of a multinational company. Results: the study resulted in three essences: (a) work in its ontological dimension, as an opportunity to express the equality of the deaf in relation to the hearing; (b) the need for cultural exchange based on the communicational action between deaf and hearing individuals; and (c) the need for acceptance and belonging to the social organization. Conclusion: we conclude by presenting the inclusion-exclusion process, in which the sharing of meanings, based on sign language, leads to integration into the social organization. Such integration allows for the recognition of work and full participation in organizational processes. The mediating element is communication, which can be a bridge or a barrier to inclusion and is mobilized through affective relationships between deaf and hearing people. From a substantive point of view, being included means, for the deaf person, having a recognized job, in which they can perform not only a task but also engage in a cultural exchange with hearing people, in order to participate in the daily social organization.

Rethinking Social Context in Technological Responsibility - Steven Umbrello, Technology Ethics: Responsible Innovation and Design Strategies

This review explores Steven Umbrello’s work on Technology Ethics, an interdisciplinary examination of the complex relationship between technology and society. The book critically examines foundational concepts such as technological instrumentalism, determinism, social construction, and interactional perspectives, highlighting the dynamic interplay between values, design, and ethics. Umbrello’s advocacy for value-sensitive design and responsible innovation as practical frameworks for addressing emerging challenges, including AI and sociotechnical systems, is a key takeaway. While the book provides a solid foundation, it raises further unresolved questions about agency in increasingly autonomous technologies and the methodological challenges associated with empirically studying interactional perspectives. This review underscores the book’s practical value for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers grappling with technological innovations’ ethical and societal implications.

A Literature Review of Teacher-Child Interactions During Shared Reading in Chinese Kindergartens

This study reviews shared book reading practices in Chinese kindergartens from an interactive perspective. Shared reading is widely recognized as a vital approach to support young children’s language, cognitive, and social development. In recent years, the focus on the quality of teacher-child interaction has grown, as it plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of shared reading. Drawing upon theoretical foundations and empirical studies, this review explores the evaluation methods and the current state of teacher-child interactions during shared book reading in Chinese early childhood settings. The findings reveal that shared reading is a triadic process involving adults, children, and picture books, with preschool teachers playing a pivotal role in guiding the interaction. However, Chinese preschool teachers were found to perform weakest in the domain of instructional support, as measured by established assessment tools. The study concludes that enhancing teachers’ instructional support capacities is essential for improving the quality of shared reading interactions and, ultimately, early literacy outcomes. This review provides valuable insights for future research and teacher professional development in early childhood education.

The Spatial Heterogeneity Impact of Urban Historical Block Morphology on Urban Heat Island——An Insight of Local Climate Zones

The urban heat island (UHI) poses a serious threat to public health. Land Surface Temperature (LST), is a critical indicator for quantifying UHI intensity. However, the study focusing on the relationship between urban morphology and LST in historical urban areas remains a challenge. Taking the historic urban area of Guangzhou as an example, this study selected seven indicators, combined with the Local Climate Zones (LCZs) theory, and used hierarchical clustering method to explore the classification of block morphology of historic urban area. Moreover, multiple linear regression (MLR), geographical detector, and multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) methods were employed to reveal the impact of block morphology on LST. The main findings are as follows: 1) LST in the study area exhibited significant spatial clustering characteristics (Moran’s I = 0.39). 2) There were eight types of block morphology in the study area, with 96% dominated by building coverage. 3) High-density low-rise (LCZ3) showed the most substantial impact on LST, followed by medium-density low-rise (LCZ3-II) and high-density mid-rise (LCZ2). 4) Building density (BD) exhibited the greatest overall impact on LST. From an interactional perspective, building height (BH) showed a notably pronounced effect. Moreover, the influence of block morphology indicators on LST demonstrated notable spatial heterogeneity, with local spatial variations in the impacts of BD and BH being more pronounced.
