Understanding the acceptance of business intelligence from healthcare professionals’ perspective: an empirical study of healthcare organizations

Purpose Due to its ability to support well-informed decision-making, business intelligence (BI) has grown in popularity among executives across a range of industries. However, given the volume of data collected in health-care organizations, there is a lack of exploration concerning its implementation. Consequently, this research paper aims to investigate the key factors affecting the acceptance and use of BI in healthcare organizations. Design/methodology/approach Leveraging the theoretical lens of the “unified theory of acceptance and use of technology” (UTAUT), a study framework was proposed and integrated with three context-related factors, including “rational decision-making culture” (RDC), “perceived threat to professional autonomy” (PTA) and “medical–legal risk” (MLR). The variables in the study framework were categorized as follows: information systems (IS) perspective; organizational perspective; and user perspective. In Jordan, 434 healthcare professionals participated in a cross-sectional online survey that was used to collect data. Findings The findings of the “structural equation modeling” revealed that professionals’ behavioral intentions toward using BI systems were significantly affected by performance expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, MLR, RDC and PTA. Also, an insignificant effect of PTA on PE was found based on the results of statistical analysis. These variables explained 68% of the variance (R2) in the individuals’ intentions to use BI-based health-care systems. Practical implications To promote the acceptance and use of BI technology in health-care settings, developers, designers, service providers and decision-makers will find this study to have a number of practical implications. Additionally, it will support the development of effective strategies and BI-based health-care systems based on these study results, attracting the interest of many users. Originality/value To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is one of the first studies that integrates the UTAUT model with three contextual factors (RDC, PTA and MLR) in addition to examining the suggested framework in a developing nation (Jordan). This study is one of the few in which the users’ acceptance behavior of BI systems was investigated in a health-care setting. More specifically, to the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study that reveals the critical antecedents of individuals’ intention to accept BI for health-care purposes in the Jordanian context.

Digital Transformation in Beekeeping to Carrying Beehives into the Future

Today, dynamic elements such as producer/consumer supply, demand, presentation, marketing and transportation transformed by technology; It has initiated a rapid change and transformation process in beekeeping, food production and agriculture sectors. Beekeeping activities; Today, it faces challenges such as climate change, disease threats, loss of habitat and bee colonies, and pesticides. It has become necessary to switch to digital transformation for the future, sustainability, efficiency, competitiveness of beekeeping and the general health of the agricultural sector. The digital transformation movement in beekeeping is a movement to bring together traditional beekeeping with modern technologies. This article explores the importance and impact of digital transformation in the beekeeping industry from the perspective of the management information systems (MIS) field. It is aimed to discuss how the transformation can be supported in terms of management information systems and what kind of road map should be followed for future studies. Digital beekeeping; It improves the productivity of bees, monitors the health of bee colonies and optimizes decision-making processes. It also creates positive effects on plant diversity in the agricultural sector and world ecosystem health. The basis of this transformation is industry 4.0, such as IoT, sensors, big data, data management, data analysis, data mining, data security, artificial intelligence and cloud computing. These technologies can be used for disease monitoring, early diagnosis, pollination and plant flowering monitoring. It is thought that this transformation will have positive effects on both beekeepers and environmental factors and will make significant contributions to progress in this field and a more sustainable future.

For government agency that want to improve public services based on information and communication technology and the need for strategic planning of information technology and information systems as a strategic direction and framework for information system use to support government agency tasks towards effective and efficient public services and inter-government services (Government to Government,Government to Business,Government to Citizen,Government to Employee) to the maximum extent possible in accordance with the vision, mission and objectives of the government agency. An agency needs to identify business needs and evaluate the IT/IS resources it has so that they can be utilized and developed by stakeholders involved in it.At this time,an agency is not enough to have just a business strategy to face competition.The existing business strategy is incorporated into the business plan and must be accompanied by an IT/IS strategy for optimal use of IT/IS. If in a government institution, the context of the business strategy will become an activity strategy and the context of the business plan will become an activity plan because a government institution is not a company that operates in the business field.The business process in the perspective of information systems is an activity or activity carried out by an agency to provide benefits (value added) for the performance of the agency. To analyze and map the extent to which the business process mapping in DISARPUS Bandung is required a method and a method that can map the flow of business processes and business process analysis is the CATWOE method (customers,actors,transformation,world view,owner and environmental constraint).

A Data Warehouse Architecture Proposal and ETL Analysis, Case study of an Albanian Banking System

The increasing phenomenon of information overload is a direct result of the ongoing trend to reduce the cost of data distribution while the development of data processing platforms is not fast enough. Therefore, sending packets of data is not a big issue, but processing an increasing amount of data is a big challenge.
 Data Warehouse is a concept born in the late ‘80s and has been improved decade after decade with the growth of technology. Despite many application areas, the data warehouse concept is still new and unknown to Albanian businesses and companies with a large amount of data to store and analyze.
 This paper aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the concept of a data warehouse, the different architectures applied, and the Extract, Transform Load (ETL) process. The ETL process as a concept consists of extracting the data from a source, transforming them into different formats or dimensions, and then loading them somewhere to be checked for analysis or other purposes.
 In this paper, we can find different definitions of the data warehouse, where it can be implemented, the different architectures according to the need of the users, and how the ETL process works. The last chapter implements a data warehouse for the banking system seen from a Management Information Systems perspective followed by an application of a step-by-step ETL procedure.

Cybersecurity research from a management perspective: A systematic literature review and future research agenda

Firms continue to face increasing threats of financial and reputational damage from cybersecurity events. Despite increasing scholarly attention, our 25-year review of studies published in leading academic business journals demonstrates that extant research has generally examined antecedents (e.g., technological defenses), with more limited research focusing on managerial responses to or long-term performance outcomes from these events. Accordingly, we chronicle the current state of knowledge of these threats from a management (rather than from an information systems) perspective. We then highlight important future research opportunities for management scholars interested in developing or testing theory related to critical cybersecurity issues.

Blockchain from the information systems perspective: Literature review, synthesis, and directions for future research

This paper profiled blockchain studies in information systems (IS) journals from 2016 to 2022. Drawing on the 443 selected articles from 77 IS journals, we proposed a classification scheme from the IS perspective. Current blockchain articles are highly skewed, focusing on research agendas and system design. We proposed a theoretical framework by summarizing the current status of the blockchain literature and highlighting 15 future research questions for the IS research community. We are optimistic that the proposed framework and future research questions can guide blockchain research and advance its scale and impact.

Determining the post-adoptive intention of millennials for MOOCs: an information systems perspective

PurposeThis study aims to understand the learner behaviour of millennials for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in the post-adoption stage by extending the theory of Unified Theory of Acceptance and User Technology 2 (UTAUT2) with expectancy confirmation model (ECM) along with personal innovativeness as the exogenous, satisfaction as a mediating and continued intention as an endogenous construct.Design/methodology/approachThis study applied a cross-sectional research design by using a survey method to collect primary data with a structured questionnaire. Convenience sampling was used to collect data from millennial MOOC users, and partial least square structural equation modelling method was applied for data analysis.FindingsThe results indicate that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation influence satisfaction. Similarly, performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, personal innovativeness and satisfaction influence the continued intention for MOOCs.Research limitations/implicationsIn terms of limitations, the study applied a cross-sectional research design that could lead to data collection bias. Similarly, the study used convenience sampling as the authors did not have access to the participant list of users from MOOC platforms.Practical implicationsThe research highlights various insights to all the stakeholders on improving MOOC satisfaction and enhance the continued intention for millennial learners.Originality/valueThe findings of this research bridge this gap by examining the post-adoption usage behaviour of MOOCs by extending the baseline model of UTAUT2 with personal innovativeness and integrating it with ECM.

Developing and Validating a Model for Assessing Autonomous Vehicles Acceptance

The promotion and application of autonomous vehicles (AVs) will bring huge benefits to society in economic and environmental aspects, and the public acceptance degree is a crucial influencing factor. Based on technology acceptance model (TAM) and information system success (ISS) model, this research develops a new framework from the perspective of AVs information system to explain public acceptance. The framework explores the relationship between variables such as system quality, information quality, service quality, perceived usefulness, perceived ease-of-use and AVS acceptance, and it also examines the mediating role of perceived ease-of-use and perceived usefulness. Based on a survey of 323 respondents, the results indicate that system quality, information quality, and service quality are key factors affecting AVS acceptance. Additionally, compared to perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use manifested a greater mediation on explanatory variables with AVs acceptance. Moreover, the research also makes recommendations for AVs manufacturers to focus on system quality and information interaction mode in the design and development process of AVs. And thus, making AVs easier to use without cognitive load could improve the AVs acceptance and adoption.

Assessing GIS education and GIS workforce in Saudi Arabia

PurposeThe geographic information systems (GIS) sector is witnessing significant growth in recent times at the global level and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the same pace. In this research, the authors aim to measure the GIS market employability in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the required skills of those seeking GIS employees, existing knowledge and abilities of graduates of relevant academic programs and gaps, if any, between the graduates and the labor market requirements in terms of GIS. Research on GIS education and GIS employability from an information system perspective is scarce; thus, this study is needed.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, a questionnaire was distributed manually and electronically to a specific group of GIS students, teachers and employees. The questionnaire was prepared in Arabic and English language. It was distributed manually to the attendees of the 12th GIS Symposium, organized by Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University at Dammam city, Saudi Arabia in April of 2018. The event is a yearly one that gathers local GIS community and outside speakers and guests. An electronic version of the questionnaire was also available and distributed via personal contacts. Responses were received until the end of 2019.FindingsThe results of 107 respondents indicates good GIS foundation (for example in topology, geospatial data processing and cartography); however, programming and business skills (namely cost benefit analysis, organizational perspective and business understanding) are lacking from Saudi GIS graduates. About 67% of respondents acknowledge directly that it is difficult to find locally qualified GIS graduates. Moreover, 55% of respondents classify GIS job candidates as underqualified. This research identifies under qualification in business competencies and computer programming skills for GIS students and workers in Saudi Arabia. This research did not find a statistically significant different response between GIS teachers and GIS employees/employers; however, students’ response was significantly different from these two groups.Originality/valueResearch on GIS education and GIS employability from an Information System perspective is scarce; thus, this study is needed. Moreover, research about this topic in Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Gulf is almost nonexistent.

A Complementary View to Computational Thinking and Its Interplay with Systems Thinking

Computational Thinking (CT) pervasively shares its methods, practices, and dispositions across other disciplines as a new way of thinking about problem-solving. Few studies have been carried out studying CT from an Information Systems (IS) perspective. This study elaborates on how systems thinking (ST), an acknowledged theory in the IS field, bonds to CT to address some well-known common issues related to CT such as reductionism and dogmatism, and to supplement the computing nature of CT with behavioral and societal facets involved in its implications. We studied how ST is applied to CT research in the literature. To do so, two primary approaches have been identified that link ST and CT. First, ST is embedded in CT practices meaning that ST is considered as a component of CT. Second, ST and CT are parallelly studied, and ST is considered as a supplementary concept to CT. Correspondingly, we propose a complementary approach that looks at CT from the ST lenses to provide a clearer picture of CT in an educational context. Moreover, we expect this new perspective can help to broaden the development of educational CT concepts and scenarios by including new notions such as framework, interpretation, norms, paradigm, and context.

Understanding gamification experiences with the benefits dependency network lens

While many gamification studies have shown measurable positive benefits for learner emotions and outcomes, mixed results continue to be reported. In this study, we focus on understanding a less than fully successful gamification experience. We examine how gamification during training and learning can be improved by expanding our view of the implementation context. This entails seeing gamification as an ensemble of technologies and humans that uses a cyclical process involving technology selection, gamification enablement, and the resulting combinations of affordances and actions by both educators/trainers and learners. In this paper, we first describe this gamification attempt and then propose that the Benefits Dependency Network (BDN), a concept from the information systems perspective, may be used as a lens to understand gamification experiences and increase the likelihood of future success. This lens engenders deep reflection not only about how the gamification process works, but about all the enabling conditions that need to be present in order to maintain, enhance, or disrupt the status quo in a given education or training setting. We assert that analysis using the BDN may reveal why some gamification studies have been inconclusive and provide insights for both researchers and implementers to achieve stronger results from gamification in the education/training context.

Algorithmic Management: Its Implications for Information Systems Research

In recent years, the topic of algorithmic management has received increasing attention in information systems (IS) research and beyond. As both emerging platform businesses and established companies rely on artificial intelligence and sophisticated software to automate tasks previously done by managers, important organizational, social, and ethical questions emerge. However, a cross-disciplinary approach to algorithmic management that brings together IS perspectives with other (sub-)disciplines such as macro- and micro-organizational behavior, business ethics, and digital sociology is missing, despite its usefulness for IS research. This article engages in cross-disciplinary agenda setting through an in-depth report of a professional development workshop (PDW) entitled “Algorithmic Management: Toward a Cross-Disciplinary Research Agenda” delivered at the 2021 Academy of Management Annual Meeting. Three leading experts (Mareike Möhlmann, Lindsey Cameron, and Laura Lamers) on the topic provide their insights on the current status of algorithmic management research, how their work contributes to this area, where the field is heading in the future, and what important questions should be answered going forward. These accounts are followed up by insights from the breakout group discussions at the PDW that provided further input. Overall, the experts and workshop participants emphasized that future research should examine both the desirable and undesirable outcomes of algorithmic management and should not shy away from posing ethical and normative questions.

Champions for Social Good: How Can We Discover Social Sentiment and Attitude-Driven Patterns in Prosocial Communication?

The UN High Commissioner on Refugees (UNHCR) is pursuing a social media strategy to inform people about displaced populations and refugee emergencies. It is actively engaging public figures to increase awareness through its prosocial communications and improve social informedness and support for policy changes in its services. We studied the Twitter communications of UNHCR social media champions and investigated their role as high-profile influencers. In this study, we offer a design science research and data analytics framework and propositions based on the social informedness theory we propose in this paper to assess communication about UNHCR’s mission. Two variables—refugee-emergency and champion type—relate to the informedness of UNHCR champions’ followers. Based on a Twitter sentiment and attitude corpus, we applied a five-step design science analytics framework involving machine learning and natural language processing to test how the emergency type and champion type impact social communication patterns. Positive and neutral sentiment dominated the tweets of the champions and their followers for most refugee-emergency types. High participation-intensity champions emphasized high-intensity emergencies with tweet patterns reflecting dominant positive or neutral sentiment and sharing/liking attitudes. However, we found that sports figures effects were limited in spreading UNHCR’s message, despite their millions of followers. We demonstrate the power of data science for prosocial policy based on refugee crisis awareness and instantiate our methods and knowledge contributions in a research framework that derives knowledge, decisions, and actions from behavioral, design, and economics of information systems perspectives.

Management of operational activities at the Regional Human Milk Collection Center: an analysis from the perspective of local intervention strategies and information systems

The purpose of the creation of the Human Milk Donation Network is to function as a device for knowledge and interaction between actors at different provincial, regional and municipal levels, to revalue and empower the figure of the community promoter, administrative and childcare worker as part of the health team, each in his/her role, raising awareness among the population of the importance of milk donation, strengthening promotion and increasing the number of donors, jointly elaborating (central, regional and municipal teams) local intervention strategies and establishing and integrating the information system. The objective of this paper was to describe the experience on the implementation of the Human Milk Collection Center that contributes to increase the volume of human milk for pasteurization in the human milk bank, in the HZGA Prof. Dr. Ramon Carrillo of Ciudadela in the month January to March 2022. Between the two hospital institutions, the Human Milk Bank of the HZGA San Martin de La Plata and the Breastfeeding Center of the HZGA Prof. Dr. Ramon Carrillo de Ciudadela, an effective chain of support for breastfeeding has been activated, through the Health Service Network modality, with the objective of contributing to the increase of pasteurized human milk. With this purpose, safe strategies have been promoted, which promote donation and increase the number of human milk donors, a coordinated work has been propitiated that guarantees equity of access to human milk and equal opportunities for premature or critical newborns who require pasteurized milk, when there is not enough milk from the mother's own milk, donated milk is the best alternative.

Tackling Data Disclosure Comparatively – Conference ‘Vectors of Data Disclosure’ in Munich, 27 and 28 June 2022

Abstract The disclosure of personal data and the decision by individuals to do so is ubiquitous. Which aspects influence this decision? How is disclosure regulated in different jurisdictions and how far do protective mechanisms go in favor of the ‘data subject’? These questions only scratch the surface of topics which the University of Passau research project ‘Vectors of Data Disclosure’ is addressing comparatively and with regard to Brazil, China, the European Union, Ghana, Japan, Russia, Switzerland, and the United States since January 2021. The project takes an interdisciplinary approach and aims to tackle these questions by combining cultural, legal, and business information systems perspectives. The project is led by Moritz Hennemann, Daniela Wawra, Kai von Lewinski and Thomas Widjaja. Concluding the first 18 months of the project, the project team invited international experts from different disciplines to Munich, offering a platform to discuss new insights and receive feedback on the project’s preliminary research results so far.

Conceptualizing industrial workplace learning: an information systems perspective

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to identify the constituent parts of learning in the manufacturing work context and understand why these parts are key in the learning of the employees.Design/methodology/approachThe data was collected from two sources: a literature review of the Information Systems literature to establish an initial picture of what learning in relation to digital technologies entails and in-depth interviews with engineers in the automotive industry whose knowledge-intensive work is exposed to substantial digital transformation.FindingsThe authors first identified three constituent parts for learning: change, reflection and deliberation. When the authors cross-checked the initial findings through in-depth interviews with the engineers, it was found that these three themes trigger learning through three different mechanisms, that is, balancing newness, finding point of reference and organizing actively. Thus, the findings of this paper extend beyond a categorical identification of what constitutes learning to also illustrate why learning entails these constituent parts.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper implies that progressive learning requires active organizing of learning stages. The data is limited to the review of the Information Systems field. The authors have also only focused on the automotive industry as the representative sector in the manufacturing industry.Practical implicationsApplying the model of progressive learning can be a primary way to actively plan and organize learning opportunities for employees. This is key for supporting learning culture in organizations that are exposed to continuous and disruptive changes.Social implicationsA significant part of social sustainability is based on sustainable employability and feelings of contentment at work. This paper is an attempt to highlight how sustainable employability can be achieved by providing effective learning opportunities at work.Originality/valueThe originality of this paper emerges from two sources. First, the authors conducted the literature review and in-depth interviews by devising innovative methods because of the challenges of identifying when (informal) learning has occurred at work. Second, the authors owe the in-depth interviews to the first author’s extensive familiarity with the automotive industry and the knowledge and rapport acquired through her prior longitudinal research on the engineers’ work. It was this background that allowed the authors to find out when these engineers were about to leave the firm because of discontent about their competence development.

Embracing mobile financial inclusion in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic: The mediating role of cognitive and affective-based trust embeddedness

The aim of the study is to examine the role of social capital in the formation of mobile financialservice users’ adoptive behaviours toward service providers in the context of the financialtechnological regime of Ghana. The study used a total of 417 sample data from a self-administeredquestionnaire to achieve its objectives. Structural equation modeling was employed to analyze thedirect effects of social capital and the mediation role of cognitive-based trust and affective-based truston mobile financial service. The results of the study demonstrate that social capital, cognitive-basedand affective-based trust collaboratively impact on the adoptive lifestyle of mobile financial serviceusers. Specifically, both cognitive-based and affective-based trust mediate between social capital andmobile financial inclusion to inform users’ behavioral intentions. The results however, reveals thataffective-based trust plays a significant role in shaping mobile financial service users’ behavioralintentions than cognitive-based trust. In detail, the study indicates that social capital directly impactson the adoptive behavior of mobile financial service users. It is therefore, recommended that in thepresent era of Covid-19 pandemic and its attendant social distancing protocols, mobile financialservice providers should invest heavily in social media channels to develop their corporate socialcapital brand in order to deepen their bondage with users. The study makes a vital contribution to theevolving debate on mobile financial inclusion, information system and consumer psychology fromAfrican perspective. The study acknowledges the contributions of prior studies to the afore-mentionedstrands of discipline and the chasm in literature. Specifically, this study is the first of its kind toempirically examine the influential functions of social capital, cognitive-based trust and affective-basedtrust on mobile financial inclusion from the len of the Ghanaian financial technological landscape.The study will equip industry players with the needed know-how to enhance their profitability andoperational competitiveness.

Value Creation and Change Management in Digital Transformations

Abstract The premise of this paper is that Digital Transformation is the most recent and probably the most powerful toolbox in the effort to create value in a company. Digital Transformation is about changing the operating models of companies and consequently the way these companies create and deliver value to their stakeholders. The indexed literature (in total 6427 items in the Web of Science database on January 31st, 2022) studying the Digital Transformation phenomenon is dominated by the computer sciences and information systems perspective. Therefore, this paper proposes a slightly different and thus new paradigm using the lenses of value creation and change management linking it this way to the strategic management of the company. The purpose of the digital transformation should be value creation and because it is a profound transformation process it is subject to the change management process principles. Through the use of text mining and visual mapping conducted with the help of VOSviewer software version 1.6.17, this paper illustrates the conceptual map of the digital transformation literature and its links to value creation and change management.

Chinese Online Language Dissemination from the Perspective of Mobile Information System

The emergence of new media technology will inevitably bring new changes to people's daily communication. The development and change of society supports the development and change of language. Language networks are created and developed along with Internet applications. It is a new variant of the traditional language adapted to the new media environment of the Internet Age. With the increasing popularity and importance of network media, network language has received extensive attention and research on local languages. This paper analyzes and investigates the dissemination of Chinese Internet language from the perspective of mobile information system. On the basis of researching and proposing the mobile information system model, the structure of the system is deeply analyzed, and the key characteristics and technologies of various fields are discussed. Wireless mobile terminal wireless Internet access technology, portable intelligent terminal mobile application development technology, and local database technology are very suitable for Chinese network analysis and research to reduce wireless connections, and the effective range is from 50 feet to 1000 feet. The article uses the communication theories and methods of linguistics, cultural studies, network neologism generation, and communication characteristics analysis. It uses students as examples to explore their online neologism use and dyslexia and their problem-solving strategies for obstacles. The results show that 50% of the students can accept the new words on the Internet very well, and 30% of the students do not understand it.

Managing Software‐as‐a‐Service: Pricing and operations

Software‐as‐a‐service (SaaS) applications have experienced a decade of explosive growth, eliminating barriers in reaching users and enabling real‐time interchanges and intelligence. Using business analytics, SaaS applications are increasingly embedded in the day‐to‐day activities of businesses and consumers with competition and innovative pricing. Due to the evolution in cloud business models, new issues are surfacing to challenge practitioners and scholars. A number of issues encountered in the practice have not been properly addressed or even recognized. In this paper, we attempt to fill this important gap. We propose a framework of recent business research on SaaS in light of wide adoption of the SaaS business model. This framework broadly classifies SaaS research into two basic themes. For each theme, we review past work that has been instrumental in setting the direction of this line of research and discuss how emerging research opportunities can be addressed. For each research opportunity, we also propose an initial model and the applicable methodology. Further, in order to aid researchers, we identify the data sources wherever applicable, and even present some of the initial results. We conclude by describing promising directions on a roadmap for future research and explain why an integrative perspective of operations, marketing, and information systems is critical to SaaS. In this paper, we bridge the gap between research and practice by identifying the relevant industry problems that would help researchers who are interested in working in this area both to get a starting point and to address important theoretical and practical challenges.
