The Continuation of Incense Worship: Exploring the Rituals of Ancestral Belief in the Incense Worship Culture from the Perspective of Chinese Transmission

Incense worship refers to the incense or candlelight used for worshipping ancestors or deities, which is an indispensable part of traditional Chinese culture. With the succession of generations and the evolution of culture, the term incense worship has gradually developed more connotations, among which the evolution based on clan implications is particularly characterized by localization. This paper will deeply explore the connotations of incense worship from the perspective of Chinese transmission, tracing its evolution in the context of ancestor worship and the localization of clan traditions. At the same time, from the perspective of communication studies, it analyzes its metaphor as a form of communication, glimpsing the rituals of ancestral belief in the incense worship culture through exploration of media, ceremonies, and space, and discussing its modern continuation and changes.

A Corpus-based Study on China's Image in Emotions of Daodejing's English Translations from the Perspective of Communication Studies

Grounded in the Chinese-English parallel corpus of Daodejing, this study delves into the intricate interplay between emotional expression, communication effects, and the nuanced portrayal of China, unveiling the subtle impacts of translation in presenting the Chinese image. Through the establishment and analysis of the corpus, the research provides insights into the evolution of emotional elements in multiple translation versions spanning from 1868 to 2009. Quantitative analysis utilizing Pearson correlation coefficients reveals weak correlations between emotional expression and communication effects, both outbound and inbound . Despite a lack of statistical significance, qualitative analysis sheds light on valuable insights. In outbound communication, the nuanced handling of emotional expression, a weaker emphasis on positive emotions, and a deliberate avoidance of excessive negative emotions signify efforts to challenge traditional perceptions and portray a more complex image. In inbound communication, a tendency toward neutral emotional expression aims to offer Western readers a genuine and comprehensive understanding of China. Motivational analysis highlights the influence of cultural differences, historical contexts, reader expectations, and global dynamics on the translator's choices in emotional expression. Cultural nuances play a crucial role in shaping the Chinese image, emphasizing the translator's importance in flexibly navigating cross-cultural communication. In the era of globalization, this study aims to underscore the growing awareness among translators of the necessity to present cultural commonalities in emotional expression, fostering a broader understanding and acceptance of Chinese philosophy and values on the global stage.

The Role of Social Media in Improving Tax Compliance in the Theory of Planned Behavior

The government always strives to improve tax compliance to achieve the target of state revenues. In practice, the government has initiated the use of social media as a communication medium to disseminate information, education, and interaction to the broader citizens. This study aims to determine the role of social media in improving individual tax compliance using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) approach. The data collection technique was carried out using an online survey method with a questionnaire instrument. The data analysis was conducted using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) Model to test the relationship between variables in a model. The study results show that the attitude variable on taxpayers intention has a p-value = 0.064 0.05 with a coefficient of -15.7%. In line with the attitude variable, the subjective norms variable has a p-value = 0.6700.05 with a coefficient of 3.1%. On the other hand, the perceived behavioral control has a coefficient of 20.1% (with p-value 0.05), the tax moral obligation variable has a p-value = 0.000 0.05 with beta = 28.7%, and the use of social media also has p-value 0.05, with a coefficient of 39.4%. The use of social media positively and significantly influences the individual taxpayers’ intention to behave in tax compliance. Adding social media variables to the study also broadens the implementation of TPB theory from a communication studies perspective, and gives recommendations to the government to improve the quality of information content appropriately through social media.

Communicative Dimensions of Centre-Periphery Relationships

This paper surveys the post-1989 Europe/Balkan conjuncture from the perspective ‎of communication studies. I employ David Morley’s materialist definition ‎of communication, encompassing exchange/movement of information/‎ideas, goods, and people. Observing the exchange of ideas, we find EU’s Euroscepticism ‎contrasting the Balkans’ Europhilia. Considering the movement ‎of people, the brain-drain from the Balkans is paralleled by incoming migrations ‎and a questioning of whether leaving the region is necessarily advantageous.‎ The movement of goods, finally, elucidates the ascendancy of Chinese ‎investment in the region, confronting Europe with being seen as a periphery‎ of Asia. The materialist communication approach thus reveals unanticipated‎ dynamism (a working-through of inherited inequality), rather than one-way ‎perpetuation of old centre-periphery prejudice. Though historically modelled‎ as Europe’s traumatized inner Other where nationalism was imposed, the Balkans ‎still have much to narrate about impurity of identities and uncertainty as‎ Europe’s new/old possible cultural heritage.‎

Perpetuation of Stigmatization of Minority Groups through Convergence of Content on Streaming and Social Media

<p class="Default"><strong><span>Introduction: </span></strong><span>This study aims to show the misrepresentation of minority groups, specifically widowed women (hereinafter referred to as <em>janda</em>) in the era of convergence of media content (television as well as streaming and social media) in Indonesia. Media as the fourth pillar of democracy are supposed to inform and represent everything in a balanced and fair manner, instead of favoring the interests of the majority. The question we attempt to answer is: how the misrepresentation of <em>janda</em> on converged media content (FTVs) in a patriarchal society?<strong></strong></span></p><p class="Default"><strong><span>Methods: </span></strong><span>This study applied feminist perspective in media convergence as well as the narrative analysis of Chatman.<strong></strong></span></p><p class="Default"><strong><span>Findings: </span></strong><span>In general, the results of the study show that the convergence has not been in favor of <em>janda</em>, indicating that internet technology does not only strengthen the gender-biased values of media industry person in massively distributing FTVs (via streaming and social media) that threaten minorities, but also ignores the opposing feedback from netizens. As a result, the minority groups are increasingly muted. Reproduction of labelling of <em>janda</em> is a strategy of media owners to obtain maximum profits.<strong></strong></span></p><strong><span>Originality: </span></strong><span>We noted many studies on <em>janda</em> conducted from various scientific perspectives. However, studies that observe the depiction of <em>janda</em> in the media convergence in the perspective of communication studies are scarce. This study provides a discussion on the representation of <em>janda</em> in the vortex of capitalism in media convergence as the major novelty in this line of study.</span>

Evaluating conspiracy claims as public sphere communication

ABSTRACT Conspiracy theories have become a ubiquitous feature of contemporary culture. From a communication studies perspective, conspiracy theories undermine democratic communication by misleading the public. However, the normative concept of a democratic public sphere also upholds the values of giving visibility to diverse perspectives and facilitating reasoned debate. Thus, academics can acknowledge the harms of conspiracy claims while being open, in principle, to their potential contribution to public debate. The challenge, of course, is to evaluate the public sphere implications of conspiracy claims; implications that may be difficult to ascertain and may change over time as new evidence emerges. This position is elucidated through an analysis of the conspiracy claims found in mainstream and alternative media coverage of the Syrian conflict. Much of the debate centres on ideas about the trustworthiness and impartiality of journalists and experts whereby efforts to establish the facts are superseded by received ideas about the credibility of sources. Ultimately, the Syrian conflict indicates that conspiracy claims can be valuable for the public sphere provided there are impartial actors willing to investigate conspiracy claims and provide clarification to the public.

Research on the Communication Media of Chinese International Education Based on Internet Multimedia from the Perspective of Communication Studies

Chinese international education is not only a simple teaching behavior, but also an international communication behavior. With the continuous development of society, communication and Chinese international education are more and more closely linked. Modern society is the era of network new media. Various network new media means emerge endlessly and change endlessly. Only by fully understanding the operation principle and communication law of each medium, can we achieve the best results in the international Chinese language education through the media. From the perspective of communication, this paper summarizes the types of current media. Combining with the current situation of Confucius Institute and using computer-aided technology, this paper illustrates the vigorous development of international Chinese education. Finally, the paper puts forward some measures.

Analysis of the Media Directing Theory Based on Multimedia Technology from the Perspective of Communication Studies

Although the media choreography major is a new profession, with the progress of our society and the economic growth, China’s media choreography major has developed rapidly. The development of media choreography in China’s colleges and universities is amazing, but with its rapid development, some new problems and development errors have appeared in the media choreography profession. Therefore, colleges and universities should fully understand the current status of the media choreography major and correctly position it. In order to better promote the development of China’s media choreography major, this paper uses computer multimedia technology and correctly positions the media choreography major based on the perspective of communication and study how to effectively promote the development of media choreography under the current situation, in order to form an organic combination of dance and multimedia technology.

The epistemic project of open diplomacy and the League of Nations: Co-evolution between diplomacy, PR and journalism

PurposeThe article discusses findings from a research project on the communication history of the League of Nations. It departs from the League's normative goal of “open diplomacy”, which, from an analytical standpoint, can be framed as an “epistemic project” in the sense of a non-linear and ambivalent negotiation by communication of what “open diplomacy” should and could be. The notion of the “epistemic project” serves as an analytical concept to understand this negotiation of open diplomacy across co-evolving actors' constellations from journalism, PR and diplomacy.Design/methodology/approachThe study employs a mixed-method approach, including hermeneutic document analysis of UN archival sources and collective biography/prosopography of 799 individual journalists and information officers.FindingsIt finds that the League's conceptualisations of the public sphere and open diplomacy were fluent and ambivalent. They developed in the interplay of diverse actors' collectives in Geneva. The involved roles of information officers, journalists and diplomats were permeable, heterogenous and – not least from a normative perspective – conflictive.Originality/valueThe subject remains under-researched, especially from the perspective of communication studies. The study is the first to approach it with the described research framework.

Studying Social Uses of 3D Geovisualizations: Lessons Learned from Action-Research Projects in the Field of Flood Mitigation Planning

Risk management seeks more and more the mobilization of all citizens, including elected representatives and inhabitants. Three-dimensional (3D) geovisualizations have been used between 2009 and 2017 in order to associate citizens to flood mitigation policies along the river Rhône. We focused our studies on the effects 3D geovisualizations can have on the communication and understanding of information and their ability to foster exchanges between heterogeneous actors as well as participation of the grand public to planning processes. Facing both discrepancies in scientific studies of the uses of 3D geovisualizations and a lack of validated theoretical elements, we resorted to an exploratory method based on grounded theory and ethnographic observation in order to produce empirical knowledge on the uses of 3D geovisualizations in collective settings, including heterogeneous actors (risk managers, elected representatives, citizens). Observation showed that 3D geovisualizations can be useful for the dissemination of information about flood risk. Many observed effects were not anticipated during the production of 3D geovisualizations. Qualitative analysis of empirical data through actor–network theory and from a communication studies perspective shed light on some factors influencing the roles of 3D geovisualizations and help put into perspective existing and sometimes contradictory scientific works on 3D geovisualizations’ uses.

The development of communication and media technology changes spatial formations in human life. A local event becomes a global event in the media network. This condition gave rise to the field of study called by communication geography or media geography. This article is a theoretical review on this field from communication studies perspective. This paper described the growing assumption on the relationship between geography with communication studies. Moreover, this paper explained some basic assumptions of the field and proposed two alternatives the emerging sub-fields according to two scholars; Paul C. Adams and Andre Jansson. The Potential of Digital Media: Theoretical Observations on the Educational and Didactic Potential of Tablets - And a Conceptual Outline of Using Them in Schools

When tablets are used in schools for internet research and in passive reception processes only, a huge potential of digital media remains unexploited. By referring to an interactionist-constructivist model of learning, requirements for sustainable and motivating learning can be identified, which take into account the findings of psychology of learning and educational theory. In an exemplary analysis of two media for instruction, the exercise book and tablet, these criteria are assessed from a communication studies perspective: by comparing these both media, two conceptual potentials of using digital media in schools can be exemplarily detected.
