3ACare: A Wireless Body Sensor Network for Health Alert and Monitoring

The development of Micro-ElectroMechanical Systems ,integrated circuits, wireless communications have resulted in the creation of miniature, ultra-low power, and wearable health monitoring system. The system can be defined as a Body Sensor Network that can be embedded in the user’s outfit as a part of the clothing .This 3ACare system is a wearable health monitoring and alert system which can give anyone health care at anytime and anywhere. The system continuously collects multiple vital signs by physiological sensors and evaluates the signs in a personal server such as a PDA. And the personal server transfers the data to a medical server center by 3G net or Internet. The doctor in the medical server center will give the patients message after they diagnosed the data.The paper describes the architecture of 3ACare and the details of the wireless body sensor network (WBSN) nodes and the test result.

Using Wearable Sensors for Remote Healthcare Monitoring System

Recent technological advances in wireless communications and wireless sensor networks have enabled the design of low-cost, intelligent, tiny, and lightweight medical sensor nodes that can be strategically placed on human body, create a wireless body area network (WBAN) to monitor various physiological vital signs for a long period of time and providing real-time feedback to the user and medical staff. WBANs promise to revolutionize health monitoring. In this paper, medical sensors were used to collect physiological data from patients and transmit it to Intelligent Personal digital Assistant (IPDA) using ZigBee/IEEE802.15.4 standard and to medical server using 3G communications. We introduced priority scheduling and data compression into the system to increase transmission rate of physiological critical signals which improve the bandwidth utilization. It also extends the life time of hand-held personal server by reducing power consumption during transmission.

A 700-$\mu$W Wireless Sensor Node SoC for Continuous Real-Time Health Monitoring

A low-power low-voltage system on a chip (SoC) was designed and implemented in a 0.18- <formula formulatype="inline" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex Notation="TeX">$\mu$</tex></formula> m CMOS process to provide a fully integrated sensor node solution for wearable wireless health monitoring. The SoC contains a sensor interface circuit, an analog-to-digital converter, a digital signal processor and a radio-frequency transmitter. Only a minimal number of off-chip components, which include an antenna, a crystal and supply decoupling capacitors, are used for improved user experience and affordability. The sensor node developed was demonstrated together with the prototype personal server. The acquired electrocardiogram (ECG) signal could be reliably transmitted to and monitored by the personal server over a distance greater than 5 <formula formulatype="inline" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex Notation="TeX">$~$</tex> </formula> m. The SoC consumes only 700 <formula formulatype="inline" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex Notation="TeX">$\mu$</tex></formula> W at 0.7-V supply voltage when it acquires ECG signal from the patient and transmits it through the 433.92-MHz channel with an output power of <formula formulatype="inline" xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex Notation="TeX">${-}$</tex> </formula> 16 dBm. This low-power sensor node solution enables continuous and real-time health monitoring for more than 200 hours without changing the battery, when a typical button-cell battery (e.g., CR2032) is used.

The easy ADL home: A physical-virtual approach to domestic living

Smart environments worthy of the name need to capture, interpret, and support human activities that take place within their realms. Most existing efforts tend to focus on either real world activities or activities taking place in the virtual world accessed through digital devices. However, as digital computation continues to permeate our everyday real world environments, and as the border between physical and digital continues to blur for the human agents acting in these environments, we need system design approaches that can cope with human activities that span the physical-virtual gap. In this paper, we present such an approach and use it for designing a smart home intended to support Activities of Daily Living (ADL). The easy ADL home is designed based on a wearable personal server that runs a personal ADL support middleware and a set of computationally augmented everyday objects within the easy ADL home. An initial qualitative study of the system involving 20 subjects revealed a highly positive attitude (score 4.37 out of 5) towards the system's capability of co-locating and synchronizing physical and virtual events throughout the everyday activity scenarios, while classical usability aspects in particular related to the gesture-based input (score 2.89 out of 5) leaves room for improvement.

Design and performance evaluation of in-home high throughput streaming service with ethernet and IEEE1394

This paper introduces a design of the optimized in-home multi-session streaming server and presents a performance evaluation of high throughput multi-session streaming service with Ethernet and IEEE1394. The in-home streaming server is a kind of personal home server or residential gateway, however it is specialized for in-home multi-session streaming and distribution of multimedia contents. In order to realize this server, two specific features should be in harmony with each other: the multi-stream transcoder to support various presentation constraints of the multimedia client devices and the multi-session streaming interface to transfer multiple high-throughput streams concurrently. In particular, the network interface should absorb the throughput tolerance caused by the concurrent stream-converting processes to maximize the multi-streaming capability of the server with a limited transcoder performance. Hence, this paper evaluates the streaming performance of the two major network protocols, gigabit Ethernet and IEEE1394a, in order to understand their adequateness for the in-home multi-session streaming service.

Design and Implementation of a Distributed Fall Detection System—Personal Server

In this paper, the main results related to a fall detection system are shown by means of a personal server for the control and processing of the data acquired from multiple intelligent biomedical sensors. This server is designed in the context of a telehealthcare system for the elderly, to whom falls represent a high-risk cause of serious injuries, and its architecture can be extended to patients suffering from chronic diseases. The main design issues and developments in terms of the server hardware and software are presented with the aim of providing a real-time analysis of the processed biosignals. As a result, the evaluation study of the implemented algorithm for fall detection through a set of laboratory experiments is presented, together with some important issues in terms of the device's consumption. The proposed algorithm exhibits excellent outcomes in fall detection.

TESTING THE LEAP-FROG HYPOTHESIS: The impact of existing infrastructure and telecommunications policy on the global digital divide

This paper tests the ‘leap-frog’ hypothesis by modeling the impact of existing telecommunications infrastructure, controlling for economic, political and demographic factors, on changes in information communication technology (ICT) access for over 200 countries between 1995 and 2005. This study has significantly greater coverage than previous research, in terms of both time frame and country cases. First, the analysis demonstrates that in the first decade of the information society successful leap-frog countries are few and far between. Second, the relative distribution of personal computers, internet hosts and secure servers among the nations of the world has barely improved over the last decade. Third, contrary to received wisdom, most of the countries that might qualify as successful leap-frog countries are actually among the wealthiest in the world. Finally, while policy reform in the telecommunications sector can sometimes speed the diffusion of digital communication tools, the record of market reforms is mixed, and the overall effect of economic wealth is still paramount. In sum, a few poor countries have leapt ahead in the development of a few aspects of ICT infrastructure and use, but these relatively rare successes are more likely to be due to economic productivity than to privatization, regulatory separation and depoliticization, or market liberalization in the telecommunications sector.

Autism, environmental buffers, and wearable servers

Ubiquitous computing systems often involve infrastructure placed either on the body or in the environment. Many issues help determine equipment's optimal placement. We've developed a combined wearable and environmental infrastructure for CareLog, a prototype system for capturing and annotating the behavior of children with autism (CWA). The infrastructure features a wearable personal server, which stores each child's information, and environmental buffers - in this case Internet-isolated cameras that store audio and video streams for short intervals before removing them. If a caregiver wishes to annotate a behavior, the caregiver downloads images from these cameras to the child's personal server; otherwise, the images are irrevocably erased. CareLog demonstrates an interesting compromise between environmental and wearable infrastructures and takes advantages of some of the best attributes of each.

Towards seamless mobility with personal servers

Observes that the future of mobile communication networks lies not only in how successful people are in deploying technologies (2.5G or 3G with a high degree of coverage and roaming between operators), but also in how well people can create a functioning environment and usage situation for end‐users in which they can get a homogeneous and continuous usage experience, despite the very heterogeneous world in which they, after all, will live. Concepts are advanced that support this observation (network independence, UI/device flexibility, and user experience continuity), and a possible solution is proposed that would take people in that direction (the personal server).

Just days after the September 11 terrorist attacks, the Nimda virus attacked Microsoft networks worldwide. “Nimda corrupted files. It added itself to Internet Information Server (IIS) Web pages, infecting PCs through vulnerable Internet Explorer browsers. Wherever it wormed in, Nimda scanned IP addresses for more victims, raising concerns about denial- of-service attacks and slowing Internet performance.”1 Nimda infected more than 2 million personal computers and servers throughout the world and consumed up to 10 percent of the Internet's capacity.2
