CCTV Footage De-identification for Privacy Protection: A Comprehensive Survey

<p>Privacy preservation is a significant concern in our data-driven society, both in the social and political spheres. These concerns are amplified by the continuous emergence of technologies and services, expanding the boundaries of what is possible in our modern era. Technologies, such as audio-video surveillance, play an essential role in security and law enforcement but can potentially lead to privacy breaches. One of the approaches for privacy preservation in still images and video is de-identification which involves replacing or concealing personal identifiers to prevent unauthorized, unintended use or disclosure of personal information. This paper comprehensively reviews privacy and security issues in closed-circuit television (CCTV) data streams, representative state-of-the-art de-identification techniques for privacy protection. We also present a service scenario in which a MEC-enabled distributed system is used for CCTV footage de-identification and re-identification for individuals’ privacy protection. Finally, we highlight open research challenges and future directions for privacy protection in CCTV footage.</p> <p> </p>

Self-Disclosure on Social Media: Do Personality Traits Matter?

The aim of this study is to integrate the privacy calculus theory with the Big Five Personality Traits Theory and to investigate the direct and moderating effects of the Big Five personality traits (openness, neuroticism, agreeableness, extraversion, and conscientiousness) on the relationship between the privacy calculus structural factors (Perceived Risk and Perceived Benefits) and disclosure of personal information on social network sites. A survey was conducted to collect data from 379 social network sites users. The sample is composed of 225 females and 154 males. The survey was designed in Qualtrics and distributed on WhatsApp using the snowball sampling technique. The measurements of the research model and the hypotheses related to the direct and moderating effects were tested using SmartPLS software. We found that perceived risk was a strong inhibitor, while perceived benefit was a strong facilitator for the disclosure of personal information. In contrast to our expectation, we found no indication that the Big Five personality traits moderate the disclosure of personal information. However, agreeableness had a positive direct effect on information disclosure. These results have implications for privacy policy makers in organizations in modifying policies and strategies for users based on their unique personality traits.

Generation Z's perception of privacy on social media: Examining the impact of personalized advertising, interpersonal relationships, reference group dynamics, social isolation, and anxiety on self-disclosure willingness

Research background: Consumers frequently exchange personal data for limited benefits from digital services, despite privacy concerns. This data enables digital providers to tailor content and enhance marketing communication, and digital services' effectiveness and efficiency. Purpose of the article: Utilizing the principles of privacy calculus theory, this study aims to identify how attitudes towards advertising (ATT), perception of advertising credibility (CRE), consumer susceptibility to interpersonal (II) and reference group influence (RGI), social isolation (SI) and social anxiety (SA) influence the willingness of Generation Z to disclose personal information on social media derived from the Generation Z privacy concerns (PC) and develop a prediction model for such behavior. Methods: Data was gathered using an online self-administered questionnaire from a sample of 451 Generation Z individuals. A non-random convenient sampling technique and binary logistic regression were used to quantify the influence of selected independent variables on the dispersion of values in the dependent variable under investigation. Findings & value added: The results highlight that Generation Z's self-disclosure willingness on social media is significantly influenced by attitudes toward advertising and consumer susceptibility to reference group influence. The effect of social isolation was also close to the required level of statistical significance. It means that positive attitudes towards advertising and high susceptibility to influence from reference groups enhance the probability of personal information disclosure. Being one of the few studies to address factors that influence the willingness of Generation Z to disclose personal information on social media, this study stands out for its holistic approach. Thus, combining various interconnected elements provides a fresh perspective to comprehend the intricate dynamics of Generation Z's relationship with privacy on social media.

Pathos or logos? How governance legitimacy perception influences individual privacy trade-offs during COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought attention to the delicate balance between individual privacy concerns and the governance of public health emergencies. Governments are leveraging a wide range of digital methodologies to acquire individual-level data for purposes such as contact tracing, isolation protocols, and surveillance, all aimed at effectively mitigating the deleterious consequences of the epidemic. However, the surrender of individual health information depends on individuals’ perception of the legitimacy of governance. In this research, our objective is to examine how individuals’ perceptions of the legitimacy of governance impact their decisions regarding privacy disclosure. This study stands out by dissecting cognitive and moral legitimacy of governance, uniquely examining their influence on individuals’ altruistic privacy disclosure during a crisis. Unlike previous research, our approach offers a more nuanced understanding of the interplay between governance legitimacy and privacy concessions. From July 15th to August 14th, 2022, amid the 2022 lockdown in Shanghai, China, this study utilizes surveys with established measurement scales, alongside structural equation modeling (SEM), to explore the relationship between individuals’ perceptions of government legitimacy in managing the pandemic and their willingness to compromise health information. The study distinguishes between moral legitimacy (pathos) and cognitive legitimacy (logos). The results find that both cognitive and moral legitimacy positively influence altruism, thus enhancing the efficacy of voluntary disclosure of personal health information to government agencies for pandemic governance. However, it is noteworthy that education level moderates the impact of these two dimensions of legitimacy on altruism. This research provides empirical evidence to enhance our understanding of how different dimensions of citizens’ perceptions of governance legitimacy in crisis situations shape their attitudes and behaviors towards privacy trade-offs.

Legal Boundaries of Data Protection

With the development of Internet, big data and artificial intelligence technology, personal information protection has become the focus of social attention. The legal boundary of data protection has become increasingly prominent, involving the collection, storage, use, transmission and disclosure of personal information. This paper aims to explore the legal boundary of data protection, analyze the legal basis, legal principles and legal provisions of personal information protection, and put forward corresponding legal suggestions, in order to provide reference for the improvement of China's data protection legal system.

Social structural factors influencing personal health information disclosure

As a general behavior in civil social life, how can personal health information disclosure be affected by social structural factors when using the health application? This study used the Social Capital Theory to examine the personal health information behavior. Nationally representative cross-sectional survey data generated by the China Family Panel Studies(CFPS) in 2020 was utilized(N = 8628). Logistic regression analysis was employed to analyze the data. After controlling for age, gender, and education covariates, social interaction had no significant impact on health APP information disclosure behavior (OR=0.988),there is a significant positive relationship between trust(OR=1.282)/ reciprocity perception(OR=1.134) and health APP information disclosure behavior. More relational social capitals can enhance individual social trust, maintain reciprocity perception, maintain the balance and stability of social exchange relations.This study extends the application of social capital theory in the study of personal health information disclosure, providing theoretical support for the democratization process of social health governance.

Privacy concerns among the users of a national patient portal: A cross-sectional population survey study

IntroductionSeeking and receiving care requires disclosure of personal information which is recorded as health data in electronic health records. Thereafter, restricting the flow of information is dependent on data protection, information security, ethical conduct, and law. Privacy concerns may arise as patients’ options concerning privacy have been balanced to cater both the privacy of patients and the needs of healthcare, as well as secondary use of data. MethodsThis study examined privacy concerns among the users of a national patient portal in a representative sample of Finnish adults aged 20 to 99 years old (n = 3,731). We used logistic regression analysis with population weights to seek answers to which factors are associated with privacy concerns. The cross-sectional survey data was collected in 2020. ResultsEvery third patient portal user had privacy concerns. Those who were 50 to 59 years old (p = 0.030) had privacy concerns more often than 20 to 49-year-olds. Those who had financial difficulties (p = 0.003) also had privacy concerns more often while those, who had good digital skills (p=<0.026), did not need guidance on telehealth service use (p=<0.001) and found telehealth service use to be beneficial (p = 0.008), had privacy concerns less often. ConclusionThe usefulness of telehealth seems to play an important role in privacy concerns. Another important factor is the skills required to use telehealth services. We encourage providing guidance to those who lack the necessary skills for telehealth service use. We also encourage putting effort not only into data protection and information security measures of telehealth services, but also into providing transparent and comprehensible privacy information for the service users as privacy concerns are common.

Privacy Policy Matters: An Empirical Investigation on the Users’ Willingness to Disclose Personal Information and Trust in a Stock Investment Mobile Application

Stock investment mobile application often requires significant personal information disclosure. However, users might be reluctant to provide such information due to privacy. In this study, we conducted a 2 × 2 full factorial experimental design involving 185 participants to investigate this issue. Our results yield interesting findings. Firstly, the presence of a privacy policy positively impacts users' willingness to disclose. Secondly, an easily understandable privacy policy impacts users' willingness to disclose, especially in low privacy policy conditions. Thirdly, the effect of readability on users' willingness to disclose is more pronounced among women than men. Fourthly, trust influences users' willingness to disclose.

The personal disclosure system for sex offenders is intended to send a warning message to local residents to be careful not to be harmed because ex-sex offenders live around them. However, the current personal information disclosure system is not becoming a current photographic information, and the unclear residence and actual residence have resulted in unknown consequences even though actual sex offenders live around them. In addition, organizations that handle personal information disclosure have not been able to proceed smoothly due to diversification such as the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, and the National Police Agency. The purpose of this study is to find countermeasures against these problems.&#x0D; The scope of the study is to examine the theoretical research of the personal disclosure system based on related laws and research papers, and to find practical countermeasures by deriving various problems through Internet articles, domestic and international research papers, and research reports.&#x0D; As a result of the study, the disclosure of sex offenders needs to be divided into low-risk and high-risk groups, and intelligent CCTV should be installed and managed in front of the subject's house to inconsistency between residential and actual residence and current photo information. Personal information disclosure management shall be unified into one institution so that the work can be carried out smoothly. When the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family notifies parents or institutions with children and adolescents of the registration of sex crimes, it should take a video of the body or walking scene in addition to the personal information of the sex offender and send the video information so that children and adolescents can see it. Only in this way will children and adolescents be able to clearly recognize that they are sex offenders when they meet a person subject to personal information disclosure on the street.

But, problems against the Korean Jessica bill by the Ministry of Justice are mainly pointed out on the legal side and there is no criticism in terms of the legislation ideology. Because the most important content of the bill is the legislative ideology, First, I write a history of security measures for sex crimes, and then I describe the problems in the ideological aspect of the Korean Jessica bill by the Ministry of Justice in an my original way.

Linked by age: a study on social media privacy concerns among younger and older adults

PurposeThis paper explores the similarities and differences in privacy attitudes, trust and risk beliefs between younger and older adults on social networking sites. The objective of the article is to ascertain whether any notable differences exist between younger (18–25 years old) and older (55+ years old) adults in how trust and risk are influenced by privacy concerns upon personal information disclosure on social media.Design/methodology/approachA Likert scale instrument validated in previous research was employed to gather the responses of 148 younger and 152 older adults. The scale was distributed through Amazon Mechanical Turk. Data were analyzed through partial least squares structural equation modeling.FindingsNo significant differences were found between younger and older adults in how social media privacy concerns related to trust and risk beliefs. Two privacy concern dimensions were found to have a significant influence on perceptions of risk for both populations: collection and control. Predictability and a sense of control are proposed as two conceptual approaches that can explain these findings.Originality/valueThis article is the first one to explore age differences in privacy concerns, trust and risk on social media employing conceptual developments and an instrument specifically tailored to the social media environment. Based on the findings, several strategies are suggested to keep privacy concerns on social media at a minimum, reduce risk perceptions and increase users' trust.

A critical literature review of security and privacy in smart home healthcare schemes adopting IoT & blockchain: Problems, Challenges and Solutions

Protecting private data in smart homes, a popular Internet-of-Things (IoT) application, remains a significant data security and privacy challenge due to the large-scale development and distributed nature of IoT networks. Recently, smart healthcare has leveraged smart home systems, thereby compounding security concerns in terms of the confidentiality of sensitive and private data and by extension the privacy of the data owner. However, PoA-based Blockchain DLT has emerged as a promising solution for protecting private data from indiscriminate use and thereby preserving the privacy of individuals residing in IoT-enabled smart homes. This review elicits some concerns, issues, and problems that have hindered the adoption of blockchain and IoT (BCoT) in some domains and suggests requisite solutions using the aging-in-place scenario. Implementation issues with BCoT were examined as well as the combined challenges BCoT can pose when utilised for security gains. The study discusses recent findings, opportunities, and barriers, and provide recommendations that could facilitate the continuous growth of blockchain application in healthcare. Lastly, the study then explored the potential of using a PoA-based permission blockchain with an applicable consent-based privacy model for decision-making in the information disclosure process, including the use of publisher-subscriber contracts for fine-grained access control to ensure secure data processing and sharing, as well as ethical trust in personal information disclosure, as a solution direction. The proposed authorisation framework could guarantee data ownership, conditional access management, scalable and tamper-proof data storage, and a more resilient system against threat models such as interception and insider attacks.

Past research has extensively studied the negative effects of brand betrayals on consumer attitudes, but largely ignored their potential positive consequences. Also, while previous research has focused on betrayals made by the brand itself, it has paid less attention to betrayals by the brand’s personnel. This paper focuses on one potentially important positive consequence of brand personnel betrayal experiences (a consumer’s feeling of being betrayed by the brand staff members): the increased willingness of consumers to share personal insights and information with the brand after experiencing a brand personnel betrayal. A field data set and two online experiments show that consumers are more prepared to share personal information with the brand when experiencing brand personnel betrayals than when experiencing other types of service or brand failures. The effect is mediated by consumers’ social affirmation mindset and moderated by privacy concerns.

Preserve data-while-sharing: An Efficient Technique for Privacy Preserving in OSNs

Online Social Networks (OSNs) have become one of the major platforms for social interactions, such as building up relationships, sharing personal experiences, and providing other services. Rapid growth in Social Network has attracted various groups like the scientific community and business enterprise to use these huge social network data to serve their various purposes. The process of disseminating extensive datasets from online social networks for the purpose of conducting diverse trend analyses gives rise to apprehensions regarding privacy, owing to the disclosure of personal information disclosed on these platforms. Privacy control features have been implemented in widely used online social networks (OSNs) to empower users in regulating access to their personal information. Even if Online Social Network owners allow their users to set customizable privacy, attackers can still find out users’ private information by finding the relationships between public and private information with some background knowledge and this is termed as inference attack. In order to defend against these inference attacks this research work could completely anonymize the user identity.&#x0D; This research work designs an optimization algorithm that aims to strike a balance between self-disclosure utility and their privacy. This research work proposes two privacy preserving algorithms to defend against an inference attack. The research work design an Privacy-Preserving Algorithm (PPA) algorithm which helps to achieve high utility by allowing users to share their data with utmost privacy. Another algorithm-Multi-dimensional Knapsack based Relation Disclosure Algorithm (mdKP-RDA) that deals with social relation disclosure problems with low computational complexity. The proposed work is evaluated to test the effectiveness on datasets taken from actual social networks. According on the experimental results, the proposed methods outperform the current methods.&#x0D;

The Association between Brand Trust, Familiarity and Personal Information Disclosure: A Case of Japanese Consumers

This study examined the effects of personal information types and brand familiarity on Japanese consumers’ perceived brand trust, privacy concerns, and anxiety about personal information disclosure to marketers. It also investigated how the cultural dimensions of Japanese consumers affect the relationships between privacy concerns, perceived brand trust, and personal information disclosure outcomes. The results of an online experiment (n = 771) showed that neither personal information requested nor brand familiarity affected Japanese consumers’ anxiety about personal information disclosure. However, cultural factors, namely uncertainty avoidance and independent self-construal, moderated the relationship between brand trust and anxiety regarding personal information disclosure to marketers.

Finding the Age and Education Level of Bulgarian-Speaking Internet Users Using Keystroke Dynamics

The rapid development of information and communication technologies and the widespread use of the Internet has made it imperative to implement advanced user authentication methods based on the analysis of behavioural biometric data. In contrast to traditional authentication techniques, such as the simple use of passwords, these new methods face the challenge of authenticating users at more complex levels, even after the initial verification. This is particularly important as it helps to address risks such as the possibility of forgery and the disclosure of personal information to unauthorised individuals. In this study, the use of keystroke dynamics has been chosen as a biometric, which is the way a user uses the keyboard. Specifically, a number of Bulgarian-speaking users have been recorded during their daily keyboard use, and then a system has been implemented which, with the help of machine learning models, recognises certain acquired or intrinsic characteristics in order to reveal part of their identity. The results show that users can be categorised using keystroke dynamics, in terms of the age group they belong to and in terms of their educational level, with high accuracy rates, which is a strong indication for the creation of applications to enhance user security and facilitate their use of Internet services.

Social Media and Online Dating Safety Practices by Adolescent Sexual and Gender Diverse Men: Mixed-Methods Findings From the SMART Study

PurposeSexual and gender diverse youth (SGDY) develop and employ safety strategies on their own to manage risks while using dating apps. This study aimed to describe the online dating safety practices of SGDY and determine the effectiveness of an eHealth HIV-prevention educational intervention with dating safety content to promote future safety behaviors. MethodsSGDY aged 13–18 from across the United States (N = 1087) were assigned to increasingly intensive HIV-prevention educational programs using a sequential multiple-assignment randomized trial design. Data were collected at three time points, each three months apart. Participants were asked multiple–choice and open-ended questions about the safety practices they used online and in person; mixed-methods described the safety behaviors of SGDY. Logistic regressions were used to determine psychosocial predictors of safety behaviors and the effectiveness of the intervention in promoting future safety practices. Results60% (n = 662) of participants used dating apps, most of whom reported using online (96.4%, n = 638) and in-person (92.9%, n = 615) safety strategies, such as limiting the disclosure of personal information or meeting other users in public. Outness and previous victimization were important psychosocial predictors of engaging in safety behaviors. Additionally, participants who received the online safety education were over 50% more likely to employ certain safety behaviors than SGDY who did not. DiscussionWhile most SGDY reported at least 1 type of safety strategy when dating online, safety practices differed across psychosocial variables, such as outness. This study provides evidence for the effectiveness of an eHealth educational intervention tailored to SGDY to promote additional safety behaviors.

Nevertheless, the transparentizing and openization of information could also increase the risk of disclosure of personal information and business secrets, leading to various illegal and criminal activities (Lim et al., 2018). It is found that many e-commerce platforms utilize big data technologies to collect, screen and process customer information. Yet, the collected customer information might be maliciously used by others to infringe on personal privacy, result in property damage and loss, trigger unhealthy market competition, and hinder economic development (Taylor, 2017). On the Role and Form of Personal Information Disclosure in Cyberbullying Incidents

Disclosing personal information significantly increases the likelihood of incidents of cyberbullying. This highlights the significance of investigating the relationships between various stakeholders in cyberbullying incidents. Our objective is to gain insight into the roles of the stakeholders, types, and typical paths of personal information in cyberbullying incidents. To achieve this, we conducted a large-scale survey with a representative sample of internet users from the United States and Nigeria (N = 1555). Our findings indicate that cyberbullying is often fueled by personal information that becomes known, directly or through social media, to other stakeholders. Cyberbullying incidents involve more than just attackers and victims; they can involve other stakeholders as third-parties 'disclosers' Both strangers and friends typically engage in such activities. Cyberbullying incidents are twice as common in Nigeria as in the United States. Our findings have implications for design, social-media literacy programs, and policy.

Factors Associated with the Privacy Disclosure on Social Media by State University Students in Sri Lanka

The use of social media has become an integral part of the daily life of young people in Sri Lanka. The majority of Sri Lankan youth between the age of 16-25 use social media platforms with Facebook being the most popular one. However, the disclosure of personal information on social media has been associated with various drawbacks, including cyberbullying, identity theft, and physical harm. This research aims to investigate the factors associated with privacy disclosure on social media by state university students in Sri Lanka. The research population consists of undergraduate students from all 17 state universities in Sri Lanka, totalling 327,216 students. The sample is selected using convenience sampling, where 385 undergraduates were selected with a 95% confidence level, and a 5% error rate. The data was collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using statistical procedures such as correlation and multiple regression analysis employing SPSS software. The results of the study reveal that privacy concern was negatively correlated with privacy disclosure, indicating that as privacy concerns increased, students were less likely to disclose personal information on social media. Conversely, perceived benefits were positively correlated with privacy disclosure. These findings suggest that increasing awareness among students of the potential risks associated with sharing personal information online may be an effective measure to prevent privacy disclosure. Furthermore, the study opens avenues for future research to build on its findings and expand understanding of the complex nature of privacy disclosure behavior on social media.
