December 20 marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of an outstanding Russian scientist, head of the Department of Hospital Surgery of the St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, laureate of the Russian Government Prize in Science and Technology, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, who made a significant personal contribution to the development of surgery and oncology, Mikhail Dmitrievich Khanevich.

Mapping the world through lexicography

Abstract This article1 analyses the original contribution of the Franciscan missionary Basilio Brollo (Ye Zunxiao 葉尊孝 or Ye Zongxian 葉宗賢, Gemona, 1648–Xi’an, 1704) to the description of Chinese toponyms and geographically relevant terms included in his Dictionarium sinico-latinum (1694, 1699), regarded as one of the most noteworthy earliest dictionaries compiled by foreign missionaries in China. The article first provides an overview of the list of toponyms included in the dictionary, describing their Chinese, romanised, and Latin renditions. Secondly, it compares selected terms with the corresponding toponymic occurrences in the Chinese sources Brollo used as references when compiling the manuscript. The article concludes with a discussion of the lexicographical and lexicological efforts involved in this process, as well as the intercultural dialogue involved in them, highlighting Brollo’s personal and original contribution to the description of 17th-century Chinese geographical elements, with special reference to the terms related to the Chinese geographical regions where he lived and worked.

Significant and anniversary dates of hygiene and epidemiology in 2025

Within the framework of the topic «Factual history of events in the history of medicine and healthcare», research is being conducted at the N. A. Semashko National Research Institute of Public Health to identify and study memorable dates of world and domestic medicine. The purpose of this article is to summarize significant dates related to the sanitary business and timed to 2025. The result of the research was the creation of a chronology of historical events and personalities, the anniversaries of which are celebrated in 2025. The paper highlights the main milestones in the development of hygiene and epidemiology, as well as the personal contribution of scientists and practitioners to the development of preventive medicine. The results obtained allow us to transfer the experience of past events to the younger generation of specialists, rely on the achievements of scientists, sanitary doctors and epidemiologists, and continue their work to ensure the sanitary and epidemiological well-being of our country.

Transformational leadership and organizational culture: a study in dental centers

Introduction: To analyze transformational leadership and organizational culture in Ocaña, Norte de Santander, Colombia dental offices.Methods: The study has a quantitative approach and descriptive design. A questionnaire was used to analyze the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational culture in 20 dental offices in Ocaña. A Spearman correlation analysis is applied based on data collected through a Likert scale, identifying patterns and relationships between key variables.Results: The study's results reveal a high correlation between organizational culture and transformational leadership in dental offices in Ocaña, especially in communication (ρ < 0.001). Other dimensions, such as personal identity, quality, contribution, and recognition, also show significant correlations but of lower intensity, characterized by transformational leadership, which is considered "good" according to the mean and median of the data analyzed. These findings suggest improving communication and strengthening organizational culture can enhance practice leadership.Conclusions: The study allows us to conclude that there is a significant correlation between transformational leadership and organizational culture in dental offices in Ocaña, highlighting that communication is a key factor. In addition, identity, quality, and personal recognition should be strengthened to improve work performance and employee satisfaction. These findings highlight the importance of developing leadership competencies and optimizing organizational culture.

INFLUENCE OF SCIENTISTS-HIPOLOGISTS OF THE INSTITUTE OF LIVESTOCK OF NAAS ON THE HORSE BREEDING OF UKRAINE: A REVIEW (to the 95th anniversary of the Livestock farming institute of NAAS and the 90th anniversary of the Department of horse breeding)

The article is devoted to the review of the formation and activities of the scientific structural unit on horse breeding of the Livestock farming institute of the NAAS, as a scientific center on horse breeding, which carries out scientific support of the industry, starting from 1944 and until now. In particular, the scientific influence of the employees of the scientific unit on horse breeding in Ukraine is analyzed. The personalities of scientists who worked in the department (laboratory) of horse breeding of the institute at different periods, their personal contribution to the horse breeding industry are considered. The achievements of the scientists-hipologists of the institute in breeding and technological research, the creation of new breeds, types, lines of horses, the improvement of the horse feeding system, elements of horse training, the study of the features of local horse populations in different regions of Ukraine are highlighted. The directions of scientific work, the created breeds, types and lines of horses, breeding, technological developments, research on genetics, feeding, biotechnology, economics in horse breeding are considered. In the article, the authors partially used archival research by Victoria Vyacheslavivna Kunets, in particular, information from her historical and bibliographic publication “Scientific achievements of scientists in the development of domestic horse breeding and horse breeding”, for which they express their sincere gratitude to her.

May Ayim: To Be Black

The article considers the complexity of the search for identity by the Afro-Germans in the last quarter of the 20th century based on the life path of the prominent teacher, poetess and activist May Ayim. The author presents a number of stages of her literary, scientific and educational activities. And examines the specifics of May Ayim’s self-awareness in the creative direction, studying of legacy and resistance in her poems and essays, as well as the integration of her work into the German-language literary space. Drawing on her literary contributions, political activism, and struggles against racism and discrimination, this article sheds light on Ayim’s impact on the Afro-German community and her enduring legacy in the German literary landscape. The article examines the problems of perception of Afro-Germans in Germany at the turn of 1980-1990, as well as May Ayim’s personal contribution to activist activities in Germany. This research aims to celebrate Ayim’s personal contribution to Afro-German literature and to changing the situation regarding Africans and half-breeds in Germany.

Lupus erythematosus and dermatomyositis.

Dr. Irwin Braverman, a luminary in our field of dermatology, united his love of internal medicine with dermatology to pioneer our understanding of the cutaneous manifestations of systemic disease. His meticulous documentation of physical examination findings in his book Skin Signs of Systemic Disease became fundamental to the training of dermatologists worldwide for decades. In the context of autoimmune connective tissue diseases, Dr. Braverman's powerful observation skills proved pivotal in charting the clinical signs and symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus and dermatomyositis. His legacy as a trailblazer in clinicopathologic correlation continues to influence younger dermatologists, emphasizing the crucial role of connecting pathologic findings in the skin to systemic pathology in providing outstanding patient care. We highlight some of Dr. Braverman's personal interests and contributions to lupus erythematosus and dermatomyositis.

Вариативность проявления авторского начала в научной аннотации: сравнение гуманитарного и естественно-научного дискурсов

The article deals with the problem of the intradiscursive variability of the speech genre of the abstract. The article aims to identify the variability of the manifestation of the author's principle in the verbal genre of abstract functioning in academic discourse. 38 Russian-language abstracts to linguistic academic articles published in the journal “Genres of Speech” in 2023 and 34 Russian-language abstracts to biological academic articles published in the “Journal of General Biology” in 2022 were selected as the base of the study. The main research methods were general scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, comparison, juxtaposition, content analysis, statistical analysis), as well as methods of complex linguistic research – lexico-semantic, component, grammatical, discursive, stylistic, linguistic and pragmatic analyses. It was revealed that the pronouns “we” and “our” (in 13 % of linguistic and 21 % of biological annotations) and the self-designation “author” (in 11 % of linguistic and 3 % of biological abstracts) are used in abstracts as explicit markers of the authorʼs presence. Biologists are more actively using indirect designation through pronouns to emphasize personal contribution to solving a scientific problem and present results reflecting new knowledge. There are no differences in the use of implicit authorization tools (passive and impersonal constructions) in the abstracts belonging to the humanitarian and natural science discourse. To express an evaluative attitude towards the components of an epistemic situation, qualitative adjectives are used in the abstracts of both scientific directions, but in linguistic abstracts the set of adjectives is much richer. It was found that in the abstracts of natural science discourse the strengthening of evaluation using qualitative adverbs is more common (50 %) than in linguistic abstracts (29 %), as well as the weakening of evaluation – 32 % and 10 %, respectively. This indicates the desire of the linguistic authors to be more accurate and selective in expressing the strengthening or weakening of the assessment and, if possible, to avoid such speech strategies. Ii is concluded that the variability of the authorʼs presence in the verbal genre of abstract, functioning in academic discourse, is due to differences in research approaches, scientific tradition and the dissimilarity of the worldview of scientists.

CHAIRMEN OF KOSTROMA DISTRICT COURT: THEIR ROLE AND PLACE IN THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM RUSSIAN EMPIRE (1871-1917)

Based on archival and historical materials, the article examines in detail the personalities of the chairmen of the Kostroma District Court for the period 1871–1917. Based on the study of the personnel of Kostroma District Court, the purpose of the study is to analyse the personalities of its chairmen as a special social group and their place in the system of judicial authorities of the Russian Empire. The main stages of their life path, formation and professional development as judicial figures are revealed. Topicality is due to insufficient research of the scientific biographies of the chairmen of the courts of post-reform Russia, as well as the expansion of the source base of research on their personalities. The author introduced new facts about the activities of the chairmen of Kostroma District Court into scientific circulation, which made it possible to recreate the portrait of judicial officials of the second half of the 19th – the early 20th century. Their estate origin, education, well-being, marital status, and official status are investigated. Their role and place in the activities of the judicial bodies of the Russian Empire are noted, including through effective public administration in the field of justice in the context of an increasing crisis of power. The conclusion is made about their personal contribution to the management of the judicial branch of government in Kostroma Province, their professionalism.

Textological aspect of studying works on Yakut folklore in the context of studying materials of the Sibiryakov expedition (1894-1896)

This article is devoted to the study of works on Yakut folklore in the context of the materials of the Sibiryakov expedition (1894–1896). The relevance of the research lies in the study of the scientific works of I.A. Khudyakov "Verkhoyansky collection: Yakut tales, songs, riddles and proverbs, as well as Russian tales and songs recorded in the Verkhoyansky district by I.A. Khudyakov", E.K. Pekarsky "Samples of Yakut folk literature" in the textual aspect and directions of conceptual provisions regarding the folklore of the Sakha people. The purpose of the study is to reveal the textual parameters of the works of I.A. Khudyakov and E.K. Pekarsky as fundamental works on Yakut folklore, where the texts of the Yakut epic olonkho acquire particular significance. The methodological basis of the study is the theoretical directions of textual criticism as a branch of philology. The work uses cultural and hermeneutic methods in the comparative typological analysis of texts, sources, and documents. As a result of the study, the scientific context of the studies undertaken by I.A. Khudyakov and E.K. Pekarsky is emphasized, their personal contribution to Yakut folklore studies is highlighted, which confirms the importance of historical and literary contacts and contexts, but also convincingly reveals the role and significance of the Sibiryakov (Yakut region) expedition in the history of national culture as a whole.

ICTS as Tools for Local Development: Santa Elena Province; A View from the SDGs

Introduction: Currently, there are social problems that affect humanity, one of them is the gap between knowledge of ICTs and their application in social networks for access to information in a timely manner in order to contribute to personal and professional development and contribution to the development of the community. The State provides opportunities based on programs, projects and strategies to direct aid and educate the population in the digital age. Objective: The research objective is to determine the way in which ICTs are used as tools for local - community development through the qualitative-quantitative approach to strengthen the development of the Amantes de Sumpa neighborhood in the Province of Santa Elena. Method: The methodological process applied in this topic is descriptive and deductive, as well as the types of documentaries, field; as well as the population that will be stratified in the neighborhood, which was investigated through the survey and the interview with the neighborhood leader. The reliability of the Likert-type instrument was also carried out by calculating Cronbach's Alpha, which was 0.833. Results and conclusions: The people participating in the research stated that it is important to develop care agreements, promote technological services, since access will allow improving the productive activities of entrepreneurs in the Amantes de Sumpa neighborhood, and promote an electronic commerce system that can be installed from public or community institutions in such a way that this serves for the permanent dissemination of the economic activities carried out by the neighborhood sector.

The role of personality, empathy, and the perception of the instructor's caring on nursing students' burnout: A cross-sectional study

AimThe present study aimed to evaluate the contribution of personality, empathy, and the perception of instructor's caring in predicting burnout in nursing students. BackgroundBurnout is alarmingly prevalent and rising among nursing students. Furthering our understanding of individual and clinical environmental antecedents of burnout is crucial to shield nursing students' well-being during their training. MethodsIn a cross-sectional study design, the Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI), the Brief version of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (BIRI), the Nursing Students' Perception of Instructor Caring (NSPIC), and the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) were administered to 361 (83.9 % females) Italian nursing students between July and December 2021. t-Tests, analyses of variance, Pearson's correlations, and hierarchical regressions were performed to examine the association of CBI with socio-demographics, TIPI, BIRI, and NSPIC. ResultsBeing female and having a low household income were predictors of Personal Burnout and Work-related Burnout. Personal Burnout was positively associated with TIPI-Neuroticism and BIRI-Personal Distress. Work-related Burnout was positively associated with BIRI-Personal Distress and NSPIC-Control, and negatively associated TIPI-Openness to Experience, NSPIC-Support, NSPIC-Confidence. Client-related Burnout was negatively associated with TIPI-Agreeableness, NSPIC-Support, NSPIC-Confidence. Beyond the effect of socio-demographics, TIPI, and BIRI, NSPIC subscales significantly contributed to the explained variance in CBI scores. ConclusionsSex, household income, personality, and empathy should be considered when designing interventions to decrease burnout in nursing students. Promoting caring relationships between clinical instructors and their pupils may contribute to reduce nursing students' burnout.

Key attributes for effective knowledge brokering at the interface of environmental science and management

Spanning the boundaries between research and decision-making is critical for supporting environmental management. One way to do so is through knowledge brokers who, among other things, work to build social networks among decision-makers and researchers, facilitating their interaction and exchange of knowledge. While knowledge brokering has received increasing attention in the literature, critical gaps in our knowledge limit their effective recruitment and implementation, which demands for a better understanding of the personal attributes needed for their success. Such an understanding is also necessary to support the evaluation of knowledge brokering activities. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the question ‘what are the most important attributes for being a knowledge broker at the interface of environmental research and management’, and how is knowledge brokering evaluated. We do so through the study of Australia’s National Environmental Science Program (NESP) which employs a range of professional knowledge brokers, 14 of whom participated in this study. Specifically, we performed a quantitative ranking exercise (Q-methodology) and an online survey. Results show that the most important attributes to knowledge brokering were interpersonal social competencies of a unifying nature. As such, Being good at seeing opportunities for collaboration, Being able to tailor communication to different audiences, and Being able to ask questions were the most highly ranked attributes. In the dimension of evaluation, survey results show that NESP knowledge brokers are mainly evaluated through metrics relating to immediate delivery and engagement (mostly quantitative measures) and medium-term impact on end-users (qualitative measures). However, participants envisioned better options to capture the impact/value of knowledge brokering by evaluating long-term impacts and efforts throughout the full brokering process to better capture value addition in line with their goals, strategies, and required attributes. The new knowledge generated through our findings offers an applied contribution to the practice of knowledge brokering, suggesting that knowledge brokering is a distinct and complex career whereby different knowledge brokers with complementary skill sets appear relevant to perform all tasks along a knowledge brokering timeline. As such, our results also emphasize the need for bespoke approaches to evaluation that are tailored towards the diverse goals, strategies, and personal contributions of knowledge brokers to support their career progression and maximise outcomes.

TOOLS FOR EFFECTIVE CAREER DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT

In today’s environment, managing employees’ career development is becoming a key factor for the success and sustainable development of organizations, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The purpose of this article is to investigate current approaches to career management in SMEs and provide practical recommendations based on theoretical research and empirical evidence. The novelty of the study lies in the integrated approach to analyzing career management practices using both quantitative and qualitative methods. This allows for a deeper understanding of the impact of career development on employee motivation and retention in a resource-constrained and highly competitive environment. The research methodology includes reviewing existing literature and analyzing case studies from different industries to identify best practices and success stories. The use of mixed research methods, such as surveys and in-depth interviews, provides a more comprehensive view of current practices and their impact on employees. The results of the study show that career development management is critical to improve employee motivation and retention, which is particularly relevant for SMEs. Pay attention to aspects such as training and development, performance appraisal systems, reward systems and their impact on employee motivation. Training and development help to improve employees’ skills and adaptability to changes in the market, while appraisal systems such as 360-degree feedback and regular evaluations help to identify achievements and areas for improvement, forming individual development plans. A fair and competitive compensation system motivates employees and promotes employee retention. The author’s personal contribution is the design and implementation of an integrated research methodology that combines quantitative and qualitative methods, which provided comprehensive data and offered practical recommendations for SMEs. The article also discusses the factors that influence employee retention and the creation of a positive corporate culture, which contributes to their long-term professional growth and enhances companies’ competitiveness in the market. In an environment of rapid change and globalization, SMEs must pay special attention to human capital development to maintain competitiveness and achieve sustainable growth. The article provides recommendations for the implementation of effective career management programs and examples of successful practices from different sectors.

Professor Lynne S. Taylor: Scientist, educator, and adventurer

This special edition of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences is dedicated to Professor Lynne S. Taylor (Retter Distinguished Professor of Pharmacy, Department of Industrial and Molecular Pharmaceutics, Purdue University), to honor her distinguished career as a pharmaceutical scientist and educator. The goal of this commentary is to provide an overview of Professor Taylor's career path, summarize her key research contributions, and provide some insight into her personal and professional contributions as an educator, mentor, wife, mother, friend, and adventurer.

Jewish Americans’ identity salience and effects on attitudes toward diversity

Although Jewish people in the US are often racialized (i.e., perceived by others) as White, Jewish Americans vary in the extent to which they consider themselves White, and in how strongly they identify with being Jewish. Based on prior findings that identifying with a White ethnic subgroup (e.g., Irish, Italian) can reduce prejudice toward racial and ethnic minorities, we predicted that strongly identified Jewish Americans would exhibit less intergroup bias than weakly identified Jewish Americans. For the present research, we recruited participants whose religious affiliation was Jewish but who self-identified as racially White. In a preregistered correlational study, Jewish identification was associated with lower bias, whereas White identification was associated with greater bias, toward Whites relative to racial/ethnic minorities. The relationship between Jewish identification and intergroup bias was accounted for by high Jewish identifiers’ perceptions that they could personally contribute to diversity in groups and organizations. Across three meta-analyzed experiments, participants whose religious minority (Jewish) identity was made salient exhibited less intergroup bias than did control participants, and in one preregistered experiment, perceived personal contributions to diversity mediated the effect of condition on intergroup bias. Implications for the forms of ethnic identity that predict more versus less intergroup bias in an increasingly multicultural society are discussed.

A Lean Six Sigma, Industry 4.0 and Circular Economy-driven methodology for wine supply chain process improvement

Scientific literature recognizes that Lean Six Sigma (LSS), Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and Circular Economy (CE) offer significant opportunities to improve operational performance and decrease the environmental impact. Wine supply chains represent a strategic asset for the world economy and an ideal setting for the implementation of LSS, I4.0 and CE, but studies that integrate these three approaches to improve wine supply chain processes are lacking. The present research intends to demonstrate how wine supply chain processes (SCPs) can be improved by deploying the synergies between LSS, I4.0 and CE, so as to face the quality, efficiency and sustainability challenges modern competition poses to wine companies. To this aim, this study proposes an original methodology that adopts a step-by-step procedure inspired by the Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) cycle to systematically improve SCPs throughout the different phases of wine supply chains (i.e., vineyard, cellar, distribution). The methodology has been conceptualized starting from three sources - review of scientific literature, interviews with experts and personal contribution – and assembles in an original way some concepts and tools referring to different bodies of literature such as strategic decision making, data-driven process improvement, lean management, industry 4.0 and circular economy. The methodology has been tested in a real case to evaluate its utility for practice and relevance.

Gout and Nutrition

Gout, the most common arthritis worldwide, is closely linked to cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. The most impor-tant risk factor for developing gout is hyperuricemia. Serum uric acid is the end product of purine metabolism and can be partially influenced by dietary changes. Since a quarter of serum uric acid is excreted via the intestine, there is also a connection with diet here - keyword microbiome. Recently, genetic predispositions and drug therapy for gout have come to the fore. However, since cardiovascular comorbidities exist in high frequency, a dietary adjustment also makes sense to improve the comorbidities. Recently, the focus has shifted away from simply reducing purine intake in favor of introducing a largely plant-based diet. Reducing alcohol consumption makes sense for many reasons but does not lead to a significant reduction in serum uric acid. In addition to drug therapy, however, all possibilities should be exploited to enable a rapid reduction in serum uric acid to the target range; a change in diet can contribute to this. A change in diet can also have a positive effect on the frequency of gout flares. Targeted, structured information for patients promotes their knowledge of the disease and motivation to achieve their serum uric acid (SUA) goal. The right diet may be the personal contribution to quickly reaching the SUA target level and freedom from gout flares.

The Insider’s Journey: Two Investments for Epistemic Justice in Educational Research

The extent to which any social scientist is authentically an insider continues to be a spirited debate within qualitative circles. Amid this weighty dispute, “insider” researchers, or me-searchers, maintain that we have certain advantages in conducting qualitative inquiry in marginalized communities that mimic our personal histories and life experiences. This article reports my first professional study as a publicly engaged scholar who directed an ethnographic childhood lead poisoning study among my cultural group, and the ways in which that initial investigation formed the trajectory of my identity as an educational researcher. Two investments needed by African American me-searchers, regarding personal and professional contributions for qualitative inquiry among marginalized people, are explored. Upon reflection, disclosure of the insider’s personal history and the inclusion of the researched as affirmed collaborators in studies that impact their lives are determined to be prerequisites to epistemic justice.

Transforming Financial Systems: The Role of Time Banking in Promoting Community Collaboration and Equitable Wealth Distribution

The existing global multi-crises have generated significant transformations in the architecture of financial systems, impacting local communities. Furthermore, the digital era has created a conducive environment for the development of financial innovations that can generate financial instruments supporting financial inclusion. Our research aims to identify and develop innovative financial instruments that foster closer collaboration within communities and promote a more equitable distribution of wealth and resources, directly impacting financial inclusion and well-being. The methodology used in our study is based on existing empirical research in the specialized scientific literature, as well as on identifying variables within existing models. Additionally, the use of bibliometric analyses and research tools based on artificial intelligence allows us to structure the innovative financial instruments found in the scientific databases. Building on the existence of innovative financial instruments, our paper specifically explores the concept of time banking as an innovative financial instrument, offering a new approach to economic exchange and the construction of financial mechanisms at the local community level. By using technology, especially in digital and ecological eras, time banks can be efficiently managed through online platforms where individuals can register their contributed hours and access the services they need. This study’s conclusions emphasize that time banks have the potential to serve as innovative financial instruments. Furthermore, through the analysis conducted in this study and the identified models, this study contributes to redefining the concept of time banking as an innovative financial instrument. Time banks focus on the productivity and efficiency of local community activities, with direct implications for reducing dependence on traditional currency and promoting an equitable distribution of labor. This innovative approach is promising, especially in an increasingly digitized financial landscape. Our paper seeks to capture this transformative potential and highlight our personal contributions to redefining the time bank as an innovative financial instrument.
