Cloud backup: an enhanced smartphone app designed with cross-platform approach

With the increase of mobile application usage, more information is stored in the phone nowadays. Once the storage on the phone is lost or broken, all of the information might be gone at a time. Thus, backing up data is very important for mobile phone users. However, storing information in other devices is still risky, and it is inconvenient to transfer data between devices. Therefore, it is better to upload our mobile data up to the cloud service. In this research, based on the concept of service-oriented computing (SOC), a cross-platform mobile service architectural framework is presented and implemented. The proposed cloud backup application enables users to synchronise mobile data to cloud storages among different mobile platforms. Hence, the cross-platform-ability of the data would be enhanced. Furthermore, if we synchronise all the information from mobile phones to the cloud, each phone can be considered as a unique personal cloud fulfilling various personal requirements.

A Scalable Solution to the Wireless Personal Cloud Service Providers to Allocate Maximize Resources to Users

Cloud service providers face challenges regarding performance and pricing. Cloud service consumers need to minimize the execution time without exceeding a given budget. This leads to umpteen numbers of challenges that includes choosing a job to admit, the time t which to run them, to accomplish them in a single or multiple systems and the total number of resources to be rented to the service providers. In this paper, a three-tier cloud structures such as infrastructures vendors, service providers and consumers with Software as a Service (SaaS) are considered. The proposed algorithm is intended in such a way that it can confirm that the SaaS providers can attain the modification that takes place dynamically for customers and also mapping the client's needs to that of the parameters of the infrastructure level. A numerous service request from a number of clients has been emphasized in this paper which is called as the scheduling. A service provider takes up the wanted resources from the infrastructure of cloud vendors and makes those resources as an established service. This is done by the technique of virtual machine (VM) image. Then the instances from these VM images are created dynamically by the providers.

Lesson Learned: Security is Inevitable

The history of computing shows simple ideas that caught on: personal computers, the Internet, cloud computing, and smartphones were timely inventions that became successful, sometimes beyond the expectations of their original designers and developers. But ideas that work for one mode of use sometimes show serious limitations in other environments. Creators must anticipate unintended uses, even though predicting change is difficult. Designers must document expectations and limitations of products so that adapters will know when an expanded use threatens security. And developers must accept responsibility for the security of their products. The relatively small group of security professionals can no longer be assumed responsible for anticipating and countering all security threats.

Humans emit upwards of 106 biological particles per hour, and have long been known to transmit pathogens to other individuals and to indoor surfaces. However it has not previously been demonstrated that humans emit a detectible microbial cloud into surrounding indoor air, nor whether such clouds are sufficiently differentiated to allow the identification of individual occupants. We used high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes to characterize the airborne bacterial contribution of a single person sitting in a sanitized custom experimental climate chamber. We compared that to air sampled in an adjacent, identical, unoccupied chamber, as well as to supply and exhaust air sources. Additionally, we assessed microbial communities in settled particles surrounding each occupant, to investigate the potential long-term fate of airborne microbial emissions. Most occupants could be clearly detected by their airborne bacterial emissions, as well as their contribution to settled particles, within 1.5–4 h. Bacterial clouds from the occupants were statistically distinct, allowing the identification of some individual occupants. Our results confirm that an occupied space is microbially distinct from an unoccupied one, and demonstrate for the first time that individuals release their own personalized microbial cloud.

BYOD and Governance of the Personal Cloud

Cloud services are increasingly being used for a variety of purposes, including e-mail, social networking, music streaming, calendar management, file storage etc. In recent times the evolution of cloud services from private applications to corporate usage has been observed. This has led to the question of how private and business cloud services can be dual-accessed through a single device, in particular a mobile device that is used as part of a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy. This paper considers the issues that arise from a consolidation of private and professional applications when accessed from a single device and introduces the term “personal cloud” to characterise such situations. It also presents an approach to cloud governance from a business perspective focusing in particular on security tokens, hardware keys and smart containers.

A Performance Measurement Framework of Cloud Storage Services

Recently cloud storage services emerged as essential services with the spread of mobile devices have been developing into sharing contents with numerous users around the world by combining with personal cloud. In addition, they have been evolving into overcoming the limitations of mobile devices and supporting a diversity of mobile devices. Cloud storage services involve enormous investment expenses, but they are expected to be more profitable, so aggressive investments of them are being made and their service quality is being improved. Nevertheless, the performance of cloud storage services is not easy to evaluate due to the diversity of storages and their complex operating environments and so on. It is difficult to compare performance measurement results objectively and quantitatively because each service provider applies its own configuration methods and performance evaluation standards. This paper proposes a performance measurement framework for cloud storage services, which could provide objective and quantitative performance measurement information, to select a suitable cloud storage service by comparing and evaluating them. The proposed framework could help to manage cloud storage performance effectively and it is expected to contribute to market activation by providing comparable cloud storage service performance information to both providers and users.

Consumer Acceptance of Personal Cloud: Integrating Trust and Risk with the Technology Acceptance Model

This paper conducts a conceptual replication of Pavlou (2003) which studied factors that impacted consumer’s behavioral intentions to make online transactions by integrating trust and perceived risk with the technology acceptance model (TAM). We test the generalizability of the model by replicating the study a decade later using a different online setting—personal cloud computing. Our results that are based on 240 observations, confirm the original study’s research model except perceived ease of use lost its direct predictive power to trust, perceived risk and perceived usefulness. Trust continues to be an important factor in perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness and should be an area of focus in online marketing strategies. Perceived usefulness continued to have a significant relationship for consumer’s intentions to use, but perceived ease of use did not affect consumer’s intention to use. Thus, more online businesses should focus on the usefulness of their service(s). Future studies are encouraged to methodologically replicate this study in different contexts and after another period in time to examine whether results hold.

An energy-efficient video transport protocol for personal cloud-based computing

Recently, we are surrounded by a collection of heterogeneous computing devices such as desktop computers, laptops, smart phones, smart televisions, and tablet PCs. Each device is operated with its own host operating system, has its own internal architecture, and performs its independent tasks with its own applications and data. A common property amongst these devices, namely that of internet-connectivity, allows them to configure personal virtual cloud system by interconnecting each other through an intermediate switching device. The personal cloud service should provide a seamlessly unified computing environment across multiple devices with synchronized data and application programs. As such, it allows users to freely switch their workspace from one device to another while continuing the interaction with the available applications. In order to support video applications, the cloud system should provide seamless video synchronization among the multiple devices. However, we note that the current cloud services do not provide efficient data flow among devices. In this paper, we propose and develop a new reliable transport protocol to support video synchronization for the personal virtual cloud system. In order to cope with battery limitation of many mobile devices in personal virtual cloud system, the proposed protocol is designed to provide energy efficient video communications. Our simulation results show that the proposed protocol can reduce end users power consumption up to 25 % compared to the legacy TCP with given packet loss probabilities and the average length of error bursts.

AbstractAn underlying cloud computing feature, outsourcing of resources, makes the service‐level agreement (SLA) a critical factor for quality of service (QoS), and many researchers have addressed the question of how an SLA can be evaluated. Lately, security SLAs have also received much attention to guarantee security in a user perspective and provide optimal and efficient security service in the security paradigm shifting by cloud computing, such as security as a service. The quantitative measurement of security metrics is a considerably difficult problem and might be considered one of the multi‐dimensional aspects of security threats. To address these issues, we provide a novel cooperative security‐SLA evaluation model for the personal cloud service environment including a multi‐dimensional approach to analyze security threats depending on services type as well as a cooperative model to reach a general consensus of priorities, that is, indicators depending on services type and security metrics based on cloud brokers. Smart Cloud Seeding for BitTorrent in Datacenters

Cloud content providers must deliver vast amounts of data to an ever-growing number of users while maintaining responsive performance, thus increasing bandwidth-provisioning expenditures. To mitigate this problem, the authors transparently integrate BitTorrent into the cloud provider infrastructure and leverage users' upstream capacity to reduce bandwidth costs. They also allocate seeder bandwidth optimally among swarms to maximize throughput. Their system delivers higher performance when dealing with large volumes of data compared to the traditional client-server paradigm. The authors' solution has been integrated with OpenStack, a widely used open source platform for cloud services, to provide a personal cloud storage system.

As the fast development of information technology (IT), abundant attractive alternatives have showed up and challenged to the traditional information technology (IT). Cloud services, the hottest representative among these alternatives, has attracted the attention from all walks of life. Considering the diversity of cloud services, this study attempts to find out the important factors affected on individual's switching intention from incumbent IT to cloud services mainly based on two-factor theory (switching enablers and switching inhibitors) and explore the direct influences of these factors on individual's switching intention. According to our findings, individual's switching intention to cloud services is not only positively influenced by switching enablers but also negatively influenced by switching inhibitors. All the switching enablers in this study (perceived omnipresence, perceived collaboration support and perceived compatibility of cloud services) have positively significant influences on individual's switching intention as well as the switching inhibitors (usage habit of incumbent IT and perceived risk of cloud services) have negatively significant influences on individual's switching intention. It's noteworthy that satisfaction of incumbent IT has insignificant influence on individual's switching intention in this study. Moreover, as we expected, both social influence and personal innovativeness have significant influences on the generation of individual's switching intention.
