Local contributions and climate change effects on organochlorine pesticide levels in soil and sediments in Svalbard

The Arctic region, including Svalbard, faces unique environmental challenges from the presence and persistence of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), pollutants known for their long-range atmospheric transport and potential local sources. In Svalbard, the melting of sea ice and glaciers due to climate change may release OCPs trapped over decades, while human activities in the area could contribute additional local contamination. This study aimed to identify and quantify different sources of OCPs in soil and marine sediments at Svalbard. Samples were collected from Kongsfjorden, Rijpfjorden, and in Ny-Ålesund. The concentrations of 23 OCPs in sediments sampled were in the range of 0.36–0.90 ng/g, which were lower than those in the soils from Ny-Ålesund (0.28 ng/g to 3.6 ng/g). The highest OCP levels were detected at locations near the research station in Ny-Ålesund, where local contamination from research activities, mining, and dumpsites could occur. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were the most prominent compound, followed by various DDTs and HCHs. Dignostic ratios and the Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model were employed to determine the primary sources of OCPs. The results from modeling showed that historically used pollutants were the primary contributor, accounting for 90% of OCPs present, while recently input OCPs were a minor contributor. However, newly input pollutants significantly contributed to HCHs (43%). It is suggested that the contribution of legacy OCPs mainly comes from the melting of sea ice and glaciers. This was especially true for Rijpfjorden (95%), while it was also significant for Kongsfjorden (55%). The local contamination and fresh inputs played a substantial role in the area near the research station in Ny-Ålesund. The study emphasizes the importance of secondly source, especially the role of melting sea ice and glaciers as well as local contaminations as sources of OCPs in Svalbard's marine sediment, which highlight the urgent need to address the impact of climate change on the Arctic environment.

Organochlorine pesticides and their markers of exposure in serum and urine of children from a nodding syndrome hotspot in northern Uganda, east Africa

Nodding syndrome (NS) is a neurologic disorder of unknown etiology characterized by vertical head nodding that has affected children aged 5–18 years in East Africa. Previous studies have examined relationships with biological agents (e.g., nematodes, measles, and fungi), but there is limited data on the possible contributions of neurotoxic environmental chemicals frequently used as pesticides/insecticides to the development and progression of this disorder. We examined the levels of persistent organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in children (5–18 years old) from Kitgum District, Northern Uganda. These children previously lived in internally displaced people's (IDP) camps, where they were exposed to various health risks, including contaminated food and water. Exposure to OCPs through contaminated food and water is postulated here as a potential contributor to NS etiology. We analyzed serum (n = 75) and urine (n = 150) samples from children diagnosed with NS, and from seizure-free household controls (HC), and community controls (CC). Samples were extracted using solid-phase extraction (SPE) and extracts were analyzed for OCPs using gas chromatography with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Mean levels of total (∑) ∑OCPs in serum samples from NS, HC and CC subjects were 23.3 ± 2.82, 21.1 ± 3.40 and 20.9 ± 4.24 ng/mL, respectively, while in urine samples were 1.86 ± 1.03, 2.83 ± 1.42, and 2.14 ± 0.94 ng/mL, respectively. Correlation and linear regression analysis indicated that potential markers for ∑hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), ∑chlordane compounds (CHLs), ∑endosulfan and ∑dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) were γ-HCH, heptachlor-exo-epoxide, endosulfan-α and p,pʹ-DDD in NS cases while in controls were α –HCH, heptachlor, endosulfan-α and p,pʹ-DDE, respectively. Since, in some instances, higher OCP levels were found in controls vs. NS cases, we conclude that exposure to organochlorine pesticides is unlikely to be associated with the etiology of NS.

Validation of an Analytical Method for Organochlorine Pesticide Residues in Beef Products by GC-MS Using Sampling with Increment Reduction

We developed a simultaneous determination method for the environmentally persistent organochlorine pesticides aldrin/dieldrin, γ-BHC, DDT, endrin, and heptachlor in beef products. In the method, we adopted incremental reduction for sample collection in order to improve the uniformity of the samples. In incremental reduction, a sample was ground and spread to an even thickness, divided into sections, and collected in an equal amount from each section. After extraction with an acetonitrile/ethanol mixture (1 : 1 v/v), sample clean-up was performed by refrigerated centrifu-gation and solid-phase extraction. This process was easy and did not require gel permeation chromatography. The sample was analyzed by GC-MS. A validation study of the development method showed that the tested pesticides met the target values indicated in the validity evaluation guideline.

Organochlorine pesticides in fat tissue of cetaceans at the Crimean coast of the Black Sea

Accumulation of persistent organochlorine pesticides (OCP) in fat tissue was examined for the mammals found released ashore along the Crimean coast of the Black Sea in 2018–2022. This group of animals is positioned at the top of food chain in the local marine ecosystem. Statistically significant dependence of the accumulation on sex (males are more contaminated than females) and age (adults and juveniles are more contaminated than calves and neonates) is found. Besides, the pesticides concentration in fat from dorsal tissue is generally higher than in fat from caudal stem, but the difference is not significant. In the tissue of harbor porpoises and common dolphins, the mean OCP concentration decreased in the order: p,p′-DDE > β-HCH > p,p′-DDD > p,p′-DDT, whereas bottlenose dolphins had the order: p,p′-DDE > p,p′-DDD > β-HCH > p,p′-DDT. The most common metabolites were DDE, and their accumulation was the highest. The concentration of DDD was considerably lower, and significant accumulation of DDT was observed rarely, so the mean concentration of these group of metabolites was the lowest.

Case-control study of environmental toxins and risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis involving the national ALS registry

Objective Neurotoxic chemicals are suggested in the etiology of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We examined the association of environmental and occupational risk factors including persistent organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and ALS risk among cases from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National ALS Registry and age, sex, and county-matched controls. Methods Participants completed a risk factor survey and provided a blood sample for OCP measurement. ALS cases were confirmed through the Registry. Conditional logistic regression assessed associations between ALS and risk factors including OCP levels. Results 243 matched case-control pairs (61.7% male, mean [SD] age = 62.9 [10.1]) were included. Fifteen of the 29 OCPs examined had sufficient detectable levels for analysis. Modest correlations of self-reported years of exposure to residential pesticide mixtures and OCP serum levels were found (p<.001). Moreover, occupational exposure to lead including soldering and welding with lead/metal dust and use of lead paint/gasoline were significantly related to ALS risk (OR = 1.77, 95% CI: 1.11-2.83). Avocational gardening was a significant risk factor for ALS (OR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.04-2.37). ALS risk increased for each 10 ng/g of α-Endosulfan (OR = 1.42, 95% CI: 1.14-1.77) and oxychlordane (OR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.01-1.53). Heptachlor (detectable vs. nondetectable) was also associated with ALS risk (OR = 3.57, 95% CI: 1.50-8.52). Conclusion This national case-control study revealed both survey and serum levels of OCPs as risk factors for ALS. Despite the United States banning many OCPs in the 1970s and 1980s, their use abroad and long half-lives continue to exert possible neurotoxic health effects.

PH-dependent synthesis of CeO2-ZnO nanocomposite for enhanced environmental remediation of endosulfan and dimethoate pesticides

This research aims to tackle significant challenges related to the synthesis and utilization of advanced nanocomposite materials in environmental remediation, specifically focusing on pesticide degradation. The synthesis of CeO2-ZnO nanocomposites employs both co-precipitation and hydrothermal methods, with the inclusion of the zwitterionic surfactant (SB-12) as a surface modifier. The modulation of pH levels during the synthesis of CeO2-ZnO nanocomposites allows for the optimization of crucial reaction parameters. Notably, it is observed that nanocomposites prepared at pH 9 exhibit the smallest average particle size. To comprehensively characterize these prepared nanocomposites, various analytical techniques such as FTIR, XRD, DR-UV/Vis, TEM/EDS, and Nano particle size analysis are employed. The FTIR results reveal a reduced presence of impurities at higher pH levels. Notably, the CeO2-ZnO nanocomposites synthesized via the hydrothermal method at pH 9 exhibit polyhedral nanostructures. The research's significant contribution lies in the practical application of these nanocomposites for the degradation of highly toxic and persistent organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides, particularly Endosulfan and Dimethoate. These nanoparticles demonstrate remarkable pesticide degradation capabilities, with a particular emphasis on their high effectiveness against Endosulfan. The potential implications of this work extend to areas such as environmental protection, sustainable agriculture, and the remediation of pesticide-contaminated ecosystems.

Atmospheric Hydroxyl Radical Reaction Rate Coefficient and Total Environmental Lifetime of α-Endosulfan.

Endosulfan is a persistent organochlorine pesticide that was globally distributed before it was banned and continues to cycle in the Earth system. The chemical kinetics of the gas-phase reaction of α-endosulfan with the hydroxyl radical (OH) was studied by means of pulsed vacuum UV flash photolysis and time-resolved resonance fluorescence (FP-RF) as a function of temperature in the range of 348-395 K and led to a second-order rate coefficient kOH = 5.8 × 10-11 exp(-1960K/T) cm3 s-1 with an uncertainty range of 7 × 10-12 exp(-1210K/T) to 4 × 10-10 exp(-2710K/T) cm3 s-1. This corresponds to an estimated photochemical atmospheric half-life in the range of 3-12 months, which is much longer than previously assumed (days to weeks). Comparing the atmospheric concentrations observed after the global ban of endosulfan with environmental multimedia model predictions, we find that photochemical degradation in the atmosphere is slower than the model-estimated biodegradation in soil or water and that the latter limits the total environmental lifetime of endosulfan. We conclude that the lifetimes typically assumed for soil and aquatic systems are likely underestimated and should be revisited, in particular, for temperate and warm climates.

Circulating organochlorine pesticide levels, genetic predisposition and the risk of incident type 2 diabetes

Persistent organochlorine pesticide (OCP) has been associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and genetic polymorphism might modify such an association. However, prospective evidence remains scarce. We conducted a nested case-control study comprising 1006 incident diabetic cases and 1006 matched non-diabetic controls [sex and age (±5 years)] from 2008 to 2013 (mean follow-up period: ∼4.6 years) based on the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort in Shiyan City of China, determined baseline levels of nineteen OCPs, and examined the associations of circulating OCPs, both individually and collectively, with incident T2D risk. We also constructed overall genetic risk score (GRS) based on 161 T2D-associated variants and five pathway-specific cluster GRSs based on established variants derived from the Asian population. Compared with the first quartile of serum β-BHC levels, the multivariable-adjusted ORs (95% CIs) of incident T2D risk in the second, third, and fourth quartiles were 0.98 (0.70–1.39), 1.43 (0.99–2.07), and 1.75 (1.14–2.68), respectively (FDR-adjusted Ptrend = 0.03). A positive association was observed between serum OCP mixture and incident T2D risk and can be largely attributed to β-BHC. Furthermore, serum β-BHC and p,p’-DDE showed significant interactions with the GRS for lipodystrophy, a T2D-related pathway representing fat redistribution to viscera, on T2D risk (Pinteraction < 0.05). In conclusion, higher circulating OCP levels were independently associated with an increased risk of T2D, with β-BHC possibly being the major contributor. Genetic predisposition to T2D-related morbidity, such as visceral adiposity, should be considered when assessing the risk of T2D conferred by OCPs.

Multi residue analysis of persistent organochlorine pesticides in fish from Baro River, Gambella, Southwest Ethiopia

In this study, the concentrations of organochlorine pesticides in thirty (30) randomly collected Tilapia Zilli fish samples from the Baro River, Ethiopia were determined. The pesticide residues were extracted by soxhlet extraction technique using a mixture of n-hexane and acetone. The extracts were cleaned with silica gel and analyzed using a GC-MS. Concentrations of organochlorine pesticides were calculated from linear calibration curves of nine mixtures of standards with a concentration range of 5-200 μg/kg in the fish sample and had correlation coefficients of 0.999 for all concentrations. The ranges of the limit of detections (LODs) and limit of quantifications ( LOQs) were 0.008–0.017 μg/kg and 0.025–0.052 μg/kg respectively. Recovery was determined from spiked samples at concentrations of 5 μg/kg, 60 μg/kg, and 200 μg/kg. Recoveries of 90.87–102.6% were obtained and the method precision calculated from relative standard deviation (RSD) was found to be 1.00–8.62%. Of the thirteen studied organochlorine pesticides five of them were detected in collected fish samples with concentrations of 67.08 μg/kg, 15.35 μg/kg, 16.6 μg/kg, 3.87 μg/kg, and 17.1 μg/kg for Endosulfan II, Endrin, Endosulfan I, 4,4’-DDD, and Chlordane, respectively. The occurrence of organochlorine pesticide residues in fish samples shows that these compounds have been used in the study areas. The levels of chlordane and Endosulfan II detected in fish samples were above the maximum residual limits (MRLs) set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. Therefore public awareness of pesticide use and management needs to be worked on by concerned bodies.

Assessment of endocrine disrupting chemicals in breast milk: Association with dietary habits and duration of lactation

The present study was aimed to assess infant safety associated with the presence of persistent organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in breast milk, a possible route of transfer of endocrine–disrupting chemicals to newborns in North India. Colostrum and breast milk samples (n = 130) were collected at different stages of lactation. Pesticides analysis was performed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC–MS). We observed that of all the samples analysed, OCPs concentration was higher in breast milk than in colostrum, suggesting pesticides contamination increases over lactation period. As far as OCPs are concerned, dieldrin [1196.64 ± 673.75 ng/g lipid weight (lw)], and β-HCH [1107.78 ± 1301.72 ng/g lw], were the predominant OCPs, followed by aldrin [977.09 ± 707.69 ng/g lw], α-HCH [948.04 ± 476.65 ng/g lw] and 1,1′-(2,2-Dichloroethene-1,1-diyl)bis(4-chlorobenzene) (p,p’DDE) [790.11 ± 399.35 ng/g lw]. The association between OCPs levels and women dietary habits were also explored, and all the OCPs were grouped and compared to each other by consumption level of fish, meat, sea foods, eggs, and dairy products. We found that women consuming non vegetarian food, like fish and meat, were exposed 3.5 times more to OCPs than women consuming vegetarian food. In addition, we also observed that factors like mother's age was positively (<0.005 - <0.001) correlated while gestational age and infant birth weight were negatively (<0.005) associated with the levels of OCPs in colostrum and breast milk, respectively. Unfortunately, neither any standards nor guidelines are available for the use of pesticides, therefore, it is suggested that careless use of OCPs should be checked and suitable remedial measures be taken to decrease human contamination. Moreover, further studies are warranted to elucidate relationship between pesticide residues in breast milk and the maternal and child health.

Persistent Organic Pollutant Levels in Maternal and Cord Blood Plasma and Breast Milk: Results from the Rio Birth Cohort Pilot Study of Environmental Exposure and Childhood Development (PIPA Study).

Levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and organochlorine pesticides (OCP) were evaluated in the breast milk and maternal and umbilical cord blood of pregnant women and their newborns in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The concentration of 11 PCB and 17 OCP were measured in 135 samples of maternal, and 116 samples of cord blood plasma, as well as 40, 47, and 45 samples of breast milk at 1st, 3rd, and 6th months after birth, respectively, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS-MS). Women were asked to answer an enrollment questionnaire with reproductive, lifestyle, residential and sociodemographic questions. The most commonly detected OCPs and PCBs in the maternal and cord blood were 4,4'-DDE; β-HCH; ɣ-HCH; and PCB 28. 4,4'-DDE was also the most commonly detected OCP in breast milk samples. Although not statistically significant, ∑DDT levels were higher among women with pregestational BMI ≥ 30, and who were non-white and older (age > 40). Newborns with an Apgar score ≤ 8 at minute 5 of life showed significantly higher levels of ∑DDT in the cord blood. Persistent OCPs and PCBs were still detected in maternal and umbilical cord blood and breast milk, even after decades of their banishment in Brazil. They may pose a risk to maternal, fetal and children's health.

Persistent organochlorine pesticides in periprostatic adipose tissue from men with prostate cancer: Ethno-geographic variations, association with disease aggressiveness

Although several studies have examined the relationship between organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and prostate cancer (PCa) risk, no data are available concerning the association between OCPs concentrations in periprostatic adipose tissue (PPAT), which reflects cumulative exposure, and PCa aggressiveness. Moreover, no previous study has compared OCPs exposure in two distinct ethno-geographical populations. The objectives were to analyze OCPs in PPAT of PCa patients from either Mainland France or French West Indies in correlation with features of tumor aggressiveness, after adjusting for potential confounders such age, BMI, and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content of PPAT.PPAT was analyzed in 160 patients (110 Caucasians and 50 African-Caribbeans), 80 with an indolent tumor (ISUP group 1 + pT2), and 80 with an aggressive tumor (ISUP group more than 3 + pT3). The concentrations of 29 OCPs were measured in PPAT concomitantly with the characterization of PUFA content.Exposure patterns of OCPs differed according to the ethno-geographical origin. Most OCPs were found at higher concentration in Caucasian patients, whereas pp’-DDE content was twice as high in African-Caribbeans. Chlordecone was only detected in PPAT from African-Caribbean patients. Most OCP concentrations were positively correlated with age, and some with BMI. After adjusting for age, BMI, and PUFA composition of PPAT, no significant association was found between OCPs content and risk of aggressive disease, except of mirex which appeared inversely associated with aggressive features of PCa in Caucasian patients.These results highlight a significant ethno-geographic variation in internal exposure to OCPs, which likely reflects differences in consumption patterns. The inverse relationship observed between mirex concentration and markers of PCa aggressiveness need to be further investigated.

Influence of delta-hexachlorocyclohexane (δ-HCH) to Phytophthora ×alni resistant Alnus glutinosa genotypes − Evaluation of physiological parameters and remediation potential

Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) are persistent organochlorine pesticides with the adverse effects on human health and the environment. The effect of delta-isomer of hexachlorocyclohexane (δ-HCH) on germination, growth parameters and physiological parameters was studied in different Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. progeny of resistant genotypes to pathogen Phytophthora ×alni. Two experiments were performed: a short-term experiment to determine the effect of δ-HCH on total germination (GT), germination energy (GE), speed of germination (SG), shoot length and biomass of seedlings, and a long-term experiment devoted to remediation aspects. In addition, changes in the hormonal system of alders were monitored in both cases. Significant differences were found between the treated and control group in most of the evaluated characteristics. Also, the content of studied phytohormones differs between groups. Furthermore, the obtained results indicate genetically determined variability in response to δ-HCH. Of the six tested, the Březové and Tuřany progeny seem to be suitable candidates for phytoremediation because of the adaptation to stress conditions or high remediation efficiency. The rest of tested progeny seems to be unsuitable due to higher mortality, lower remediation efficiency and higher levels of stress hormones resulting in significant decrease in biomass and plant height. Moreover, results indicate the role of the plant as a remediation accelerator, probably through released exudates, and a positive effect on the soil microbiome as the presence of plants increased the remediation efficiency by 20.85 – 35.89%. The obtained research findings may be helpful in better understanding the processes involved in removing these pesticides from the soil. Further research should be focused on rhizosphere microbiome, mechanism of in-plant isomerization and metabolites identification.

Correlation between Lindane Use and the Incidence of Thyroid Cancer in the United States: An Ecological Study.

The increasing rate of thyroid cancer may be attributable to endocrine disruptive chemicals. Lindane is a persistent organochlorine pesticide with endocrine disruptive properties that has been classified as carcinogenic to humans. The aim of this ecological study was to evaluate potential correlation between lindane exposure and thyroid cancer incidence in the United States (US). Data on statewide age-adjusted thyroid cancer incidence rate (per 100,000 people) was obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for all US states for 2019. Lindane use estimates per cropland (kg/acres cropland) were then overlaid on the map of age-adjusted thyroid cancer incidence rate using ArcGIS. The trend of lindane use in the US between 1992 and 2007 was calculated using the Mann Kendall correlation test. The correlation between statewide lindane use and age-adjusted thyroid cancer incidence rates was calculated using Spearman correlation. Lindane use in the US decreased significantly between 1992 and 2007 (T = −0.617; p < 0.001). There was no statistically significant correlation between lindane use in 1992 and thyroid cancer incidence rate for any of the years between 1999 and 2019. Our results suggest that restrictions clearly seem to be effective in reducing lindane use, however, more research is needed for individual pesticides and thyroid cancer.

Tapping the potential of a glucosamine polysaccharide-diatomaceous earth hybrid adsorbent in the solid phase extraction of a persistent organic pollutant and toxic pesticide 4,4'-DDT from water.

A chitosan (a glucosamine polysaccharide)-diatomaceous earth hybrid was studied for the adsorption of 4,4′-dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (4,4′-DDT), a persistent organic pollutant and organochlorine pesticide compound from water. The diverse adsorption process parameters were studied and the modified adsorbent was characterized through XRD, SEM-EDX, FT-IR, XRF, BET and TGA analysis. The concentration of 4,4′-DDT was measured using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) by adopting a validated analytical procedure. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms ascertained the adsorption capacity. The optimum pH and temperature for 4,4′-DDT adsorption were found to be between 5.0 and 7.0 and 20 and 30 °C respectively. Thermodynamic parameters confirmed that the adsorption of DDT on chitosan modified with diatomaceous earth was an exothermic process. The data obtained from kinetics and intra-particle diffusion showed that the composite material is able to sequester 4,4′-DDT and this is reflected in the Langmuir adsorption capacity of 0.968 mg g−1. The adsorbed 4,4′-DDT was successfully eluted with ethyl acetate and recycling studies showed that the modified chitosan can be used for three cycles with significant adsorption performance and this adsorbent proved its efficacy in removing 4,4′-DDT from farm water.

Microbial Transformation of Chlordecone and Two Transformation Products Formed During in situ Chemical Reduction.

Chlordecone (CLD) is a very persistent synthetic organochlorine pesticide found in the French West Indies. Recently published work has demonstrated the potential of zero-valent iron to dechlorinate CLD by in situ chemical reduction (ISCR) in soils under water-saturated conditions, forming mono- to penta-dechlorinated CLD transformation products. These transformation products are more mobile than CLD and less toxic; however, nothing is known about their further degradation, although increasing evidence of CLD biodegradation by bacteria is being found. The present study began with the enrichment from wastewater sludge of a CLD-transforming community which was then inoculated into fresh media in the presence of either CLD or two of the main ISCR transformation products, 10-monohydroCLD (-1Cl-CLD) and tri-hydroCLD (-3Cl-CLD). Carried out in triplicate batches and incubated at 38°C under anoxic conditions and in the dark, the cultures were sampled regularly during 3 months and analyzed for CLD, -1Cl-CLD, -3Cl-CLD, and possible transformation products by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. All batches showed a decrease in the amended substrates (CLD or hydroCLD). CLD degradation occurred with concomitant formation of a nine-carbon compound (pentachloroindene) and two sulfur-containing transformation products (chlordecthiol, CLD-SH; methyl chlordecsulfide, CLD-SCH3), demonstrating competing transformation pathways. In contrast, -1Cl-CLD and -3Cl-CLD only underwent a sequential reductive sulfidation/S-methylation process resulting in -1Cl-CLD-SH and -1Cl-CLD-SCH3 on the one hand, and -3Cl-CLD-SH, -3Cl-CLD-SCH3 on the other hand. Some sulfur-containing transformation products have been reported previously with single bacterial strains, but never in the presence of a complex microbial community. At the end of the experiment, bacterial and archaeal populations were investigated by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The observed diversity was mostly similar in the CLD and -1Cl-CLD conditions to the inoculum with a dominant archaea genus, Methanobacterium, and four OTU affiliated to bacteria, identified at the family (Spirochaetaceae) or genus level (Desulfovibrio, Aminobacterium, and Soehngenia). On the other hand, in the -3Cl-CLD condition, although the same OTU were found, Clostridium sensu stricto 7, Candidatus Cloacimonas, and Proteiniphilum were also present at > 2% sequences. Presence of methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria could contribute to sulfidation and S-methylation biotransformations. Overall, these results contribute to increasing our knowledge on the biodegradability of CLD and its transformation products, helping to progress toward effective remediation solutions.

Levels and profiles of perfluorinated alkyl acids in liver tissues of birds with different habitat types and trophic levels from an urbanized coastal region of South Korea

Contamination status and characteristics of perfluorinated alkyl acids (PFAAs) including perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluorinated sulfonic acids (PFSAs) was examined using liver tissue of birds - black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris), domestic pigeons (Columba livia var. domestica), pacific loons (Gavia pacifica), herons (Ardea cinerea), and egrets (Egretta garzetta and Ardea alba) - with different trophic levels, habitat types and migratory behaviors from an industrialized coastal region of South Korea. A wide range of PFAAs (1.09 ng/g to 1060 ng/g; median = 52.6 ng/g) were detected in bird livers from the Korean coasts with high detection frequency. Accumulation features of PFAAs in birds indicated that primarily trophic position and secondly habitat type influence the levels and composition of PFAAs, e.g., relatively high PFAA levels and high composition of odd-numbered long carbon chain PFCAs (perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnDA) and perfluorotridecanoic acid (PFTriDA)) and PFOS in higher trophic and marine birds. The prevalence of long carbon chain (≥14) PFCAs likely implies a wide use of fluorotelomer-based substances in Korea. Interspecies comparison in the accumulation profile of persistent organic pollutants (including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides, polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), and PFAAs) reveals relatively high load of PFAAs in inland (pigeons) and estuarine (egrets/herons) species compared to marine bird species, indicating wide use of PFAAs in the terrestrial environment.

Assessment of systemic and carcinogenic health risks of persistent organochlorine pesticide residues in four fruit vegetables in south-western Nigeria

PurposeThe study assessed the levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and their potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks in four regularly consumed fruit vegetables.Design/methodology/approachThe OCPs’ residues were quantified using a gas chromatograph coupled with an electron capture detector (GC-ECD) and the dietary exposure of children, and adult consumers to the detected OCPs was evaluated using carcinogenic and systemic health risk estimations.FindingsAldrin, endrin, endrin aldehyde, a-endosulfan, β-endosulfan, endosulfan sulphate, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide and dieldrin were detected in the four fruit vegetables. The predominant OCP residue in carrot, cucumber, tomatoes and watermelon was endosulfan sulphate with mean concentrations of 2.532 mg kg−1, 1.729 mg kg−1, 2.363 mg kg−1 and 1.154 mg kg−1, respectively. The residues levels in some of the fruit vegetables were higher than their respective maximum residue levels (MRLs) of 0.01–0.05 mg kg−1 set by the European Commission with concentrations above MRLs ranging between 25.5% and 100%. The systemic health risk estimations showed that the hazard index (HI) values for carrot (3.20), cucumber (9.25), tomatoes (50.21) and watermelon (16.76) were >1 for children consumers and the respective HI values of 2.87, 15.57 and 5.20 for adult consumers of cucumber, tomatoes and watermelon were >1 which implies potential systemic health risks. Four carcinogens (aldrin, dieldrin, heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide) had cancer risk index values greater than the acceptable risk of 1 in 1 million for both adult and children consumers.Originality/valueThe paper shows that despite the ban on the use of OCPs in Nigeria, they are still being used for agricultural production especially on some locally produced and regularly consumed fruit vegetables as reported in the present study. The non-existence of surveillance programmes on pesticide usage and the lack of proper monitoring of pesticide residues in food products including fruit and vegetables must have contributed to the levels of the detected OCP in the samples analysed. The current daily intake of OCP via contaminated vegetables may pose potential health risks to both the children and adult consumers of the fruit vegetables.

Toxicity of DDT to the hooded oyster Saccostrea cucullata: Mortality, histopathology and molecular mechanisms as revealed by a proteomic approach

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), a persistent organochlorine pesticide, has been linked to adverse biological effects in organisms. However, there is limited knowledge about its toxic effects on marine organisms and the underlying molecular mechanisms. This study investigated the toxic effects of DDT in the hooded oyster Saccostrea cucullata. The oysters were exposed to DDT at concentrations of 0, 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 2000 µg/L for 96 h and the LC50 (96 h) was 891.25 µg/L. Two sublethal concentrations (10 and 100 µg/L) were used to investigate the histopathological effects and the proteome response. Histopathological results showed that DDT caused the alteration of mantle tissue. This included the induction of mucocytes in the epithelium and the inflammatory effect in the connective tissue indicated by the enlargement of blood sinus and hemocyte aggregation within the sinus. Proteomic results showed that, amongst approximately 500 protein spots that were detected across 2DE gels, 51 protein spots were differentially expressed (P < 0.01; fold change > 1.2). Of these, 29 protein spots were identified by LC-MS/MS. These included 23 up-regulated, 5 down-regulated and 1 fluctuating spots. Thus, we observed that stress response and cytoskeletal proteins are the central targets of DDT action. Furthermore, DDT alters the expression of proteins involved in energy metabolism, calcium homeostasis and other proteins of unknown function. Additionally, proteomic results clearly elucidated the molecular response of the histopathological changes which were driven by the alteration of cytoskeletal proteins. Our results improve the current knowledge of toxicity of the DDT to histology and molecular response of oyster proteome to DDT exposure. In addition, histopathological changes will be beneficial for the development of an appropriate guideline for health assessment of this species in ecotoxicological context.
