The R F values of seventeen isomeric substituted dibenzoyl peroxides on aluminium oxide, treated and untreated cellulose and silica gel are given. The best separations were obtained on silica gel and dimethylformamide impregnated paper. The so-called “ ortho effect” and the effect of substituents on the migration behaviour of compounds under investigation are discussed.

AbstractA study of the polymerization of vinyl chloride was made at conditions under which the monomer exists in the gas phase. In the presence of a bed of poly(vinyl chloride) particles, free‐flowing product was obtained. By using free‐radical initiators, such as dialkylperoxy dicarbonates or acetylcyclohexane sulfonyl peroxide, high initiator productivities were obtained in reaction periods of 1.5 to 3 hr. Although some modifiers, such as ethyl bromomalonate and bromoform, were demonstrated to lower molecular weight, satisfactory molecular weight modification was accomplished by adjusting polymerization temperature. Several peroxy compounds of different reactivity were studied. Hydrocarbon additives improve the polymerization rate. It is believed that the hydrocarbon and initiator are absorbed on the PVC particle surface and allow the monomer concentration to be increased at the polymerization locus. PVC particles of small size may be prepared in a liquid bulk polymerization for use as seed polymer for the vapor phase process. This provides a seed of high porosity which enables one to prepare a vapor phase product with suitable plasticizer absorption. The physical properties of products prepared by the vapor phase process were evaluated in a rigid formulation.

Monitoring of ozone in air by the peroxy-isocyanate method.

A brief review of the analytical methotis for the analysis of ozone in air leads to the opinion that present methods are not completely adequate. The possible use of a new technique employing the reaction between peroxy compounds and aromatic iso-cyanates is investigated and the preliminary results indicated this approach might have advantages over present methods. However, further field testing is necessary to document the practicality of this technique.

In the reactions of polyene, prepared by the dehydrochlorination of polyvinyl chloride with sodium 2-methoxyethanolate, with benzoyl peroxide, acetyl peroxide, peracetic acid, dicyclohexyl peroxydicarbonate, and hydrogen peroxide the molecular addition of the peroxide to the polymer occurs with cleavage of the oxygen-oxygen bond. 2. Polyene is oxidized by 12% nitric acid to tartaric, oxalic, phthalic, and other acids.

Thermogravimetric and differential thermal methods as well as chemical analysis show that sodium peroxide attacks beryllium oxide to form beryllate, apparently in the molecular ratio 1 Na 2O:1 BeO. An unidentified peroxy compound of beryllium is formed at about 165° by the action of the NaO 2 present in the Na 2O 2 sample; it decomposes between 280 and 310°. IR absorption spectroscopy indicates the presence of Be-O bonds in the sodium beryllate which are different from those in the oxide used.

The carcinogenic potencies of a series of alkylating and peroxy compounds were compared by the use of various routes of administration in mice and rats. Twelve of these compounds, earlier tested on mouse skin, were tested by one or more of the following routes: subcutaneous injection in mice and rats and intragastric feeding in rats. These experiments showed that those compounds tumorigenic to mouse skin are also active by other routes. These compounds are: β-propiolactone, β-butyrolactone, d,l-diepoxybutane, glycidaldehyde, and 1,2,5,6-diepoxyhexane. Those compounds inactive on mouse skin are weakly active or inactive by other routes. These compounds are: cumene hydroperoxide, 9,10-epoxy-stearic acid, diketene, 2,2,4-trimethylhydroxypentenoic acid-β-lactone, cyclohexenehydroperoxide, and lauroyl peroxide. β-Propiolactone and β-butyrolactone are mouse-skin carcinogens and induce gastric cancers when fed repeatedly to rats; however, 3 epoxides carcinogenic to mouse skin (glycidaldehyde, d,l-diepoxybutane, and 1-ethyleneoxy-3,4-epoxy cyclohexane) do not induce gastric cancers in rats. This finding is related to the rapid acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of epoxides in the rat stomach. The compounds tested induced tumors mainly at the site of application and did not give any significant incidence of tumors at sites distant from the site of application. These experiments indicate that connective tissue of rats is not unusually sensitive to tumor induction by these compounds and that subcutaneous injection in the rat is a useful system for the evaluation of potential carcinogens.

1. Under the action of peroxides or UV radiation mercuric alkanoates undergo initiated free-radical decarboxylation with formation of alkylmercury compounds. 2. For the lower alkanoates — mercuric acetate and propionate — the decarboxylation reaction has a chain character and provides a convenient method for the synthesis of organomercury compounds, particularly (alkanoyloxy) methylmercurys. 3. In the aromatic series the decarboxylation of mercuric salts goes much less readily. The introduction of a substituent into the aromatic nucleus hinders the decarboxylation of mercuric arenecarboxylates. 4. Mercurous carboxylates react with peroxy compounds with formation of organomercury compounds. The reaction is of preparative interest and can be applied for the fixation of free radicals in the liquid phase.

The gaseous oxidation of toluene II —The analytical results

The products of the reaction between 450° and 515°C have been found to include water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and small quantities of benzene, formaldehyde, benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid, phenol, quinones, hydrogen peroxide and organic peroxy compounds as well as hydrogen, methane and ethylene. From a detailed study of the variation of the formaldehyde concentration, it has been confirmed that this is the intermediate mainly responsible for degenerate branching. The maximum formaldehyde concentration is proportional to fuel and oxygen pressures under the conditions studied. A mechanism is proposed which accounts for the principal experimental findings.

Self‐extinguishing polystyrene foaming‐in‐place beads

AbstractThe preparation of practical self‐extinguishing polystyrene foaming‐in‐place compositions by suspension polymerization is described. The halogen necessary for self‐extinguishing characteristics is incorporated by chain transfer. The synergistic effect of organic peroxides decreases drastically the amount of halogen necessary. For example, 0.3 pph 1,2‐dibromotetrachloroethane in the presence of 0.2 pph dicumyl peroxide renders the composition self‐extinguishing, while 1.0 pph is necessary without peroxide. The rate of polymerization is unaffected by the presence of this chain transfer agent, while the molecular weight is reduced considerably. The effectiveness of other halogenated chain transfer agents and peroxy compounds has been demonstrated. Silicone mold release agent exerts a deleterious effect on the self‐extinguishing properties.
