Design and Implementation of Real-Time Sensors for Three-Phase Induction Motor Performance Monitoring using Internet of Thing (IoT)

This article delves into the design and implementation of cost-effective sensors tailored for real-time monitoring of three-phase induction motor performance. The research primarily centers on the assessment of the operational effectiveness of a suite of sensors, including the PZEM-004t power sensor, MLX90614 temperature sensors, NJK-5002C rotation sensors, and ADXL345 vibration sensors, within the context of three-phase induction motor performance analysis. The monitoring system for three-phase induction motor performance is built around the ESP-32 platform, incorporating the ADXL345 vibration sensor. This article successfully presents the individual sensor performance, which was systematically evaluated through testing on a three-phase induction motor that had been meticulously designed and closely observed. The unit tests reveal that all sensors employed in the experiments exhibit an average error rate of less than 5%. When assessed as an integrated system, the three-phase induction motor performance monitoring system demonstrates robust functionality, effectively measuring critical variables such as voltage, current, power factor, temperature, vibration, and rotational speed.

The research issues include the performance of three-phase induction motors and the impact of load on three-phase induction motors. This study aims to develop a driving system for empty fruit bunches (EFB) processing machines using induction motors at PT. Suryabumi Agro Langgeng, South Sumatra. The research was conducted at PT. Suryabumi Agro Langgeng in South Sumatra, from May to June 2024. Primary data in this research were obtained through observation and interviews, while secondary data were gathered from document analysis. In the context of this research on three-phase induction motors, document analysis techniques can be used to analyze various documents such as scientific literature, technical specifications, maintenance reports, production records, or other documents related to induction motors. The research methods include system requirements analysis, system design and implementation of the driving system, and performance testing of the developed system. The results show that the use of induction motors can provide better operational efficiency in EFB processing. This research is expected to contribute positively to improving the efficiency and productivity of PT. Suryabumi Agro Langgeng's operations.

Design Of Maximum Torque Per Ampere Control Method In Squirrel Cage Three-Phase Induction Motor

Improving the performance of three-phase induction motors is currently carried out by various control methods. One of them is controlling a three-phase induction motor using the Maximum Torque Per Ampere (MTPA) method. This paper focuses on the study of modeling specific motor models using the MTPA method. The purpose of the study is to prove that with the squirrel cage motor model, the speed can be increased above its rating. The MTPA method is a method of controlling a three-phase induction motor by controlling the current from the torque speed. Modeling is tested to see the responsiveness of the modeled system. The experimental results were tested using two-speed references and the system showed that MTPA control induction motors can improve the performance of three-phase induction motors. The results from the design show that the MTPA method can increase the performance of three-phase induction motors to reach 84.4%. The results of this study can be used as one way to model induction motors.

Study the performance of three-phase induction motor under imbalanced non-sinusoidal supply

The rising of single-phase distributed generators and imbalanced loads in the electrical power grid can cause the three phases voltage to unbalance, causing in risen losses and overheating in motors. As a consequence of the growing usage of electronic equipment and non-linear load, the waveform of the voltage source of the electrical system is becoming distorted and variations appear among the phases. This work explores the negative impacts of imbalanced of 10 HP three phase induction motor squirrel-cage fed by three phase IGBT inverter at full load. The drive system has been designed and simulated by MATLAB/Simulink. The inverter switches are controlled by a pulse controller, which consists of two level pulse width modulation (PWM). The results represent the effects on the performance of the motor. The results of the Simulation show the negative impacts of imbalanced non-sinusoidal voltages which are higher than the case of balanced non-sinusoidal voltages. Also, the computation of voltage unbalance factor (VUF) depending on positive and negative sequence components are considered.

Induction motors are used extensively in a wide variety of industrial applications. The development in the power electronics field have led to an ever- increasing use of thyristors switching devices in the induction motors supply voltage control for the purpose of speed control, soft starting, and energy saving in these applications. Such power electronics switching devices generate different waveforms patterns of nonsinusoidal voltage according to balanced and unbalanced condition of their operation. So, the present paper investigates the impact of this nonsinusoidal supply voltage waveforms on the dynamic performance of a three-phase induction motor during balanced and unbalanced operation. Also, this paper considers the IM operation at different loading conditions. A MATLAB program has been used to model the thyristorized induction motor performance.

Performance estimation of three-phase induction motors from no-load startup test without speed acquisition

This paper presents a simple method to estimate the steady-state performance of three-phase induction motors using only measurements of stator voltages and currents, acquired during a no-load startup test and without speed acquisition. The procedure consists of two steps: (a) firstly, the parameters of the single-cage model are estimated while considering the rotor resistance and the leakage inductances variable with the slip; and (b) secondly, the steady-state performance is estimated from the equivalent circuit using the estimated parameters. The proposed method is experimentally validated through tests involving 229 medium-power motors with power ranging from 22 to 90 kW; the estimated performance is then compared with measurements obtained through standardized laboratory tests. In addition, we also estimated the performance using a known double-cage model with constant parameters and compare the results with those obtained with the proposed model. We demonstrate that the proposed method provides accurate estimates for the main performance characteristics, such as efficiency and rated torque, which usually cannot be correctly assessed without direct measurements. The method makes it possible to estimate the performance of medium-power induction motors within acceptable accuracy through quick and low-cost tests requiring few sensors, making it a potential substitute for expensive and labor-intensive laboratory tests.

Predictive Torque Control With Online Weighting Factor Computation Technique to Improve Performance of Induction Motor Drive in Low Speed Region

This paper presents a predictive torque control (PTC) method with online weighting factor computation based on the principle of coefficient of variation (CV) while maintaining the steady state, dynamic, and low-speed performance of three-phase induction motor (IM) drive. In PTC, appropriate weighting factor values are essential for the satisfactory performance of the drive. The main challenge is the tedious tuning of weighting factors, which requires rigorous simulation to obtain the desired performance of the drive. In this paper, a method is proposed that estimates online weighting factors, which modifies the cost function consecutively based on the principle of CV. In this method, the ranking of constraint is based on its magnitude of dispersion, whereas in other tuning methods, ranks are assigned beforehand. The proposed method (CV-PTC) is compared with the conventional normalized weighting factor-based PTC method specifically to improve the demagnetization effect in the low-speed operation. In the CV-PTC algorithm, synthetic voltage vectors are implemented to improve the performance of IM in full operating speed range. The experimental analysis is carried out on the IM drive prototype to validate the results and showcase the independence imparted for the selection of weights in the cost function.

Unbalanced Voltages Impacts on the Energy Performance of Induction Motors

<p class="Abstract">This paper presents the results of a study about the effects of unbalanced voltages on the energy performance of three-phase induction motors. The principal contribution of this paper is that presents a detailed analysis of the influence of positive and negative sequence voltage components and the angle between them on several characteristics such as: line currents, losses, efficiency and power factor under different voltage unbalanced conditions. A three-phase induction motor of 3 HP was used as a case study. The results of the investigation show that the positive sequence voltage must be considered together with the voltage unbalance factor (VUF) or percent voltage unbalance (PVU) index to evaluate the performance of the induction motor. It is also shown that the behavior of the motor load influences on the positive sequence parameters next to the voltage, while in the case of negative sequence only influences the negative sequence voltage.</p>

Modelling and Simulation for Used Genetic Algorithm Method to Speed Control of Three-phase Induction Motor

Optimization techniques are very well-known to improve the performance of Three-phase induction motor (TIM). Inverter and SVPWM method can be used for setting voltage and frequency appropriating with loads requirements. This study deals with the tuning of PID controller parameters to be used TIM. Genetic algorithm is used to tune each parameters of PID speed controller to improve the speed response performance of the TIM. PID-GA aims to minimize the error signal speed of TIM, reduce overshoot, and tune parameters of PID controller. The error signal speed of TIM has objective function from integrated error signal (ISE). Parameters of PID controller from optimization are used to the model of the closed-loop speed control of three-phase induction motor using PID. PID-GA has the best speed response. On the model of the closed-loop speed control of three-phase induction motor using PID, various load torque can result in decreasing flux stator and rotor, increasing current stator and rotor, and decreasing speed of the induction motor.

On-line fault diagnostics in operating three-phase induction motors by the active and reactive currents

Motor current stator analysis (MCSA) are usually used to detect the broken bars. In several industrial applications, like cement industry, the motor is subjected to load torque variations of low frequencies, which have effects similar to rotor faults in the current spectrum and result of diagnostic procedure may be ambigues. In this paper, we present a study based on the application of the instantaneous active and reactive courant signature analyses for discriminating broken rotor bars from mechanical load oscillation effects in operating three-phase squirrel cage induction motors. This method is attractive because it does not need to interrupt the operating system in its application and allows the user to “see” the diagnosis information in the same way as in the well-known MCSA, i.e., as sidebands next to the fundamental current component. This technique has been first tested through the simulation of induction motors using a mathematical model based on the modified winding-function approach (MWFA). Then, experimental results are presented in order to demonstrate the capability of the proposed tool for discriminating between a motor with broken rotor bars from a motor driven by an oscillating load.

Labeling and efficiency of induction motors, IEC on chilean case

This article presents the historical development of a labeling program, particularly in Chile, the criteria chosen for the experiments, the participants of the process and the difficulties found during its execution. It also discussed the methodology used, which considered the IEC 60034-2-1 norm for direct and indirect measurements of the performance of three-phase induction motors. Finally, the results obtained by measuring the performance of one motor. Furthermore, not only the results are presented in a labeling context but also the criteria that they should meet for this class of program are suggested.

An Active–Reactive Power Method for the Diagnosis of Rotor Faults in Three-Phase Induction Motors Operating Under Time-Varying Load Conditions

This paper presents a new method to diagnose rotor faults in operating three-phase induction motors under the presence of time-varying loads. The proposed diagnostic strategy relies on a combined analysis of the amplitude and phase spectra of the instantaneous active and reactive powers of the motor, and allows to discriminate the effects introduced by a rotor fault from the ones caused by an oscillating load torque, even when these phenomena occur simultaneously. A theoretical analysis carried out using a linearized model of the induction motor in a synchronous reference frame, complemented with several simulation and experimental results, confirms the validity of the proposed diagnostic approach.

The Use of the Instantaneous-Reactive-Power Signature Analysis for Rotor-Cage-Fault Diagnostics in Three-Phase Induction Motors

In this paper, a new detection technique based on the instantaneous-reactive-power signature analysis is proposed for the diagnosis of rotor-cage faults (RCFs) in operating three-phase induction motors (IMs). This technique has been tested through the simulation of two different IMs using a mathematical model based on the winding-function approach. In order to demonstrate the capability of the proposed tool for rotor-condition monitoring, these simulations are complemented by the experimental results obtained from two IMs with several faulty rotors, powered from sinusoidal and nonsinusoidal supply voltages. The results obtained by the fast-Fourier-transform algorithm and the Welch method show the merits of the proposed approach for the detection of RCFs. A suitable fault-severity factor is also proposed as an indicator of the motor condition. Moreover, the inductive reactive effect of RCFs is underlined to demonstrate the effectiveness and convenience of this new technique for the diagnosis of RCFs in three-phase IMs.

Analysis of Three-phase Induction Motor Performance under Different Voltage Unbalance Conditions Using Simulation and Experimental Results

The performance of a three-phase squirrel cage induction motor fed by an unbalanced voltage supply has been investigated in this article. Matlab/Simulink software is used for simulation of the motor using simple (conventional) and exact models under different unbalanced voltage conditions. Simulation results are verified by performing experimental tests on a 1.5-kW standard three-phase induction motor. With the aid of simulation and experimental results, variations of stator current, motor efficiency, power factor, and rotor ripple have been investigated under various steady-state unbalanced voltage conditions. It is shown that, in addition to the voltage unbalance factor, the magnitude of positive and negative sequence components of the unbalanced supply voltage have an important role on motor performance. For instance, motor power factor decreases with the increase of positive sequence voltage component, even if the voltage unbalance factor is constant. Also, the motor efficiency decreases with the increase of the voltage unbalance factor, even if the positive sequence component of the supplied voltage is constant. It is shown that the stator current unbalance factor and motor losses will increase (decreasing efficiency) with the increase of the voltage unbalance factor under constant load conditions. Moreover, the voltage unbalance factor has a negative impact on the electromagnetic torque peak due to the decrease in the positive sequence voltage component. Using different voltage unbalance factors, the motor derating factor is also calculated, where four different limits are considered. The results imply conservative limits set by standards for motor operation under unbalanced voltage conditions. A comparison between the experimental and exact model simulation results confirmed a maximum discrepancy of 4% between the results, indicating the validity of the employed exact model for motor analysis in unbalanced voltage conditions.

Impact of voltage unbalance on the performance of three-phase induction motor

Availability of quality power has become an important issue for industrial utilities due to frequent performance variations in process industries. Increase in the generating capacity has not kept up pace of power demand, which results into shortage of power supply and power system network is normally subjected to varying and unequal loads across the three phases. Continuous variation of single-phase loads on the power system network leads to voltage variation and unbalance, most importantly; the three-phase voltages tend to become asymmetrical in nature. Application of asymmetrical voltages to induction motor driven systems severely affects its working performance. This paper presents the effects of voltage variation and unbalance on the performance of an induction motor driven centrifugal pump with a case study.

Predicting performance of three-phase induction motors connected to single-phase supplies

The paper presents an algorithmic method to give an optimum run-up characteristic of operating a three-phase induction motor from a single-phase supply. Based on the accepted level of unbalance factor, the author predicts optimum speed for the change over from the starting to loading part of characteristic.

Computer-aided detection of airgap eccentricity in operating three-phase induction motors by Park's vector approach

The subject of online detection of airgap eccentricity in three-phase induction motors is discussed, and a noninvasive approach, based on the computer-aided monitoring of the stator current Park's vector, is introduced. 音響解析による三相誘導電動機の故障診断

This research aims at establishing diagnostic monitoring techniques for three-phase induction motor systems using acoustic analysis on order to substitute for engineer's diagnosis.This report describs the change of specific frequency components of acoustic sound of operating three-phase induction motors under the condition of unbalanced circuit parameters caused by stator or rotor circuit damages such as disconnection or short circuit. Experiments were made for discussing failure diagnosis by detecting the specific frequency components of the sound of a motor. The following results were obtained by the acoustic analysis of the sound at the surface of the motor.1) Under abnormal conditon with unbalanced circuit parameters of the stator, it is possible to diagnose by comparing the sound power spectrum amplitude of the 2f0 frequency component with that of normal conditon where f0: an electric source frequency [Hz] .2) Under abnormal conditon with unbalanced circuit parameters of the rotor, it is possible to diagnose by detecting the beat sound of fr, fr±2 sf0 frequency components, where fr: notation frequency of rotor, s: slip.

GENERALIZED THEORY FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF THREE-PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR WITH STAR-DELTA WINDING

Abstract A theory has been developed for the performance of three-phase induction motor with star-delta stator winding. Space harmonics of delta and star components of the winding and their space-phase displacements have been taken into account in the analysis. A general computer program has been developed incorporating the new theory for evaluation of performance. Predictions of performance have been verified by tests on a few three-phase squirrel-cage induction motors with star-delta stator connections.
