Strategic Planning Process Intensity and Formality Impact on the Performance of Accredited Universities in Kenya

This study sought to investigate if the strategic planning process has significant influence on the performance of accredited universities in Kenya. Beyond the strategic plan document, the intensity and formality with which the process of strategic planning is carried out, its extensiveness and inclusiveness, is a concern for organizations in the twenty first century. Performance of accredited universities is conceptualized into growth and ranking as guided by the world standard for performance of tertiary institutions. The study is anchored on the institutional theory and contingency theory and it is founded on the positivist philosophical orientation as it is based on theory. Further, it adopts a descriptive cross sectional survey design. The population of interest were all accredited universities in Kenya as at November 2016. The findings indicate a statistically significant direct relationship between strategic planning process and growth (F=2.605, p=0.047 and R2=.303) and with ranking (F=1.995, p=0.033 and R2=0.218). Engaging university stakeholders in the strategic planning process and focusing the energies of members on the seven key variables of the strategic planning process should be encouraged and enhanced since it has a positive effect on university performance. The formality of the strategic planning process has a negative effect on university performance hence there is need to balance formality with allowing room for creativity to avoid missing out on innovative approaches from university members. Further research into other industries with different performance measures and the use of longitudinal design are recommended as possible areas for further research to enhance generalization of current study findings.

Independence and Management Support: The Advocate for Internal Auditors' Task Performance in Tertiary Institutions

Tertiary institutions in Nigeria are bedevilled with many financial irregularities and deficiencies that make the existence and the task performance (TP) of the internal auditors in the institutions questionable. This study, therefore, empirically examines the influence of independence (IND) and management support (MS) on the TP of internal auditors in the South-West tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The study formulates and tests two hypotheses in respect of the relationship between IND and TP in one hand, and MS and TP on the other hand. This study employs a quantitative approach, cross-sectional design, and survey questionnaire in obtaining data from 350 internal auditors in the internal audit departments/units of the universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education in South-West Nigeria. The study records a response rate of sixty percent (60%). Data are analysed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (IBM SPSS) version 22.0, and Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), version 2.0. The results of the PLS-SEM algorithm and bootstrapping reveal positive significant relationships between IND and TP, and the MS and TP, hence, the two hypotheses are supported. This study is significant and has practical and theoretical implications. It has a policy implication on the government or private proprietors who are owners of tertiary institutions; management and Council who control the institutions, internal auditors who are operators of internal auditing; regulatory authorities that perform oversight function on the institutions, and professional accounting and auditing bodies. The study adds to the body of literature and extends internal audit research to tertiary institutions.

Bayesian Estimation of Above-Average Performance in Tertiary Institutions: A Case Study of University of Lagos, Akoka, Nigeria.

Bayesian approach for parameter estimation has the capacity to yield more precise estimates than methods based on sampling theory. There are several common Bayesian models; in this study we applied Empirical Bayes (EB) model called Beta-binomial model. The study is motivated by the need to beam searchlight on universities, faculties or fields of study with graduates who may not be eligible for further educational pursuits. This study provides means of assessment or a basis of evaluation of students' performances among faculties or fields of study and overall performance of a university. This study uses Bayesian methods of inference to estimate the proportion of above-average performance of graduates from the various faculties in University of Lagos. The model adopted generated results which are of smaller variances compared with variances of sample Proportions, showing that the posterior proportions generated are more efficient estimators. This is further evidenced in narrow widths of the computed confidence intervals. The overall result shows that the proportion of above-average performance of graduates of University of Lagos, who are eligible for further educational pursuits (i.e. higher degrees), is approximately 72% of the university graduates.

A Propose Model For Distributed Database System On Academic Performance Of Tertiary Institutions In Nigeria

This paper takes a look at distributed database systems and its implementation and suitability to the academic environment of Nigeria tertiary institutions. It also takes cognizance of network operating system since the implementation of distributed database system highly depends upon computer networks. A simplified model of a prototype is offered for implementation by any tertiary institution. Literature search, internal and external data were used and Microsoft Visual FoxPro 6.0 was the language of implementation for the proposed model. Factors influencing the prenatal detection of structural congenital heart diseases.

To assess the factors influencing the prenatal detection rate of structural congenital heart diseases (CHDs). A retrospective study was conducted at a major obstetric hospital in Australia between 1 January 1996 and 30 June 1999. The medical records of all fetuses and infants born with CHD, except those with isolated patent ductus arteriosus or secundum atrial septal defect, were reviewed. Only pregnancies that had prenatal ultrasound scan assessments for morphological surveys were included. The following factors that may influence the detection rate were assessed: complexity of the lesions; experience of the sonographers (performance in tertiary versus non-tertiary institutions); presence of other structural or chromosomal anomalies; and maternal body mass index (BMI). The incidence of structural CHD in this series, excluding cases referred from other hospitals, was 7.0 per 1000 (179/25 529). Of the 179 pregnancies with CHD, 151 had prenatal ultrasound scans and were included in the study. The overall detection rate for CHDs in this series was 40.4%. The detection rate for isolated septal defects was poor (13.7%). The detection rates were significantly higher for complex lesions (54%), for lesions with concomitant septal defects (66.7%), and for lesions with abnormal four-chamber views (62.9%). The detection rate was also higher if the scan was performed in the tertiary institution, and if there were other chromosomal or structural anomalies. Maternal BMI did not affect the detection rate in the current series. Stepwise logistic regression analysis showed that three independent variables affecting the detection rate were complexity of the cardiac lesion, experience of the operator, and the detection of chromosomal anomalies. A high detection rate for major CHDs can be achieved in a screening setting but there is still room for improvement in scanning skills in the four-chamber view and great-artery analysis in both tertiary and local centers.
