Thermal response and performance evaluation of floor radiant heating system based on fuzzy logic control

The floor radiant heating system is widely used in various buildings due to its advantages such as high efficiency, comfort, and uniform heating. Generally, research on floor radiant heating systems focuses on energy saving, but the issue of slow thermal response during the heating process has not been solved. To solve the problem of slow thermal response and uneven indoor thermal environment in floor radiant heating systems, a fuzzy logic control theory based on optimal fuzzy rules was proposed. The floor radiant heating system based on fuzzy logic control was established by the TRNSYS-MATLAB integrated control platform. The study compared the thermal response and thermal comfort performance of PID control, fuzzy logic control, and optimized fuzzy control methods. The results showed that fuzzy logic control performed better than PID control in controlling the system's thermal performance and indoor thermal environment. Compared to PID control, the optimized fuzzy control reduced the thermal response time by 64.60%, and the total energy consumption of the water pump and heat pump decreased by 222 kWh and 329 kWh, respectively. The proposed fuzzy logic control demonstrates favorable thermal response characteristics and holds substantial potential for energy conservation within the increasingly prevalent floor radiant heating systems.

Optimization of PEMFC pressure control using fractional PI/D controller with non-integer order: design and experimental evaluation

The fuel-based proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is a promising technology for clean energy production owing to the several advantages including high efficiency (around 80% theoretical), quiet in operation, and almost zero emission as compared to conventional internal combustion engine. Only hydrogen and oxygen are supplied at the anode and cathode, respectively to generate power and water is produced as by product. However, it suffers to achieve its maximum theoretical efficiency due to lack of flow/pressure management of hydrogen and oxygen in the PEMFC stack which also causes flooding within the cell and reduce the performance of the catalyst and reduces the efficiency. The higher efficiency can be achieved with the proper control of the hydrogen and oxygen inlet flow rate and pressure at the PEMFC. Since it’s crucial to maintaining a consistent supply of exponential pressure, the main focus of this work is pressure regulation at the PEMFC cathode side. A fractional PI/D controller is designed to operate the PEMFC system more realistically. There are three primary objectives of this research work. In the first step, monitoring the PEMFC operating pressure to find out the suitable fractional PI-D controller for a given resilience level, which has the lowest Integration Absolute Error (IAE) to disturbances. The robustness level and/or threshold peak is considered as a tuning parameter for the evaluation. Second, compare the best IAE performance of the fractional PI-D controller with that of simple SIMC rules, where a certain level of resilience is achieved by varying the SIMC tuning variable. Through this comparison, the effectiveness of the recommended controller in achieving the optimal plant performance is evaluated. Thirdly, design a non-integer order PEMFC plant with a fractional controller using MATLAB software and compare the results with existing models. This comparison provides insight into the practical performance of the proposed controller. The results shows that the developed fractional PI/D controller is able to control the pressure very efficiently at the PEMFC cathode side. The findings further emphasise on the important to consider the resilience and robustness levels at the time of developing control systems for PEMFCs. The efficacy of the suggested unique technique is further confirmed by contrasting the suggested controller with the developed models.

Fuzzy Logic Temperature Control on Baby Incubator Transport Battery Efficiency

Baby incubator transport is a life support tool used to maintain the body temperature of newborn babies during transportation from one place to another, such as from a hospital to an intensive care center with more complete facilities. The problem that often occurs in transport incubators is limitations in the power system. Baby incubator transport uses a battery as the main power source. However, the limited battery power can cause risks to the baby if there is a problem with the power system or the battery runs out. This study aims to monitor the remaining battery voltage in a transport baby incubator that uses fuzzy logic to control the temperature inside and will compare with the performance of PID control. This research uses a fuzzy logic method to control temperature and maximize battery power. In this study, researchers only looked at the efficiency of the fuzzy logic method in temperature control and the battery that will be used. The research uses a display that will display the battery voltage and current values, battery power percentage, skin temperature, chamber temperature, humidity and the selected temperature control. The module that has been made is then compared with the Digital Multimeter measuring instrument. From the results of data collection, the measurement of the remaining battery voltage between the sensor reading and the measuring instrument has a difference where at a temperature of 34 ºC it is 2.1%, at a temperature of 35 ºC it is 2% and at a temperature of 36 ºC it is 3.9%. When compared to research using PID control, fuzzy logic takes longer to reach the desired temperature and demands more battery power when compared to PID control.

Fuzzy Based Supervision Approach in the Event of Rotational Speed Inversion in an Induction Motor

Abstract This article aims to implement the fuzzy control for an asynchronous motor after a general representation of the vector control. We develop MAMDANI type fuzzy algorithm for MAS speed regulation; it’s one purpose is to cancel static error, decrease overshoot, decrease response time, and rise time to obtain an adequate response of the process and regulation and to have a precise, fast, stable and robust system. This paper investigates the design of a fuzzy-based approach for monitoring the inversion of the rotational speed of an induction motor. We will indeed present a robust vector control technique ex-tended to blur in the event of a fault. Direct torque control is known to produce fast and robust response in the AC drive system. However, in a steady state, a rapid and unexpected change in speed can occur which could be dangerous. The performance of the conventional PID controller can be improved by implementing fuzzy logic techniques. The first step is the modelling of the whole system, including the capacitors, the induction generator and the loads. The model is obtained using the Park transformation. The results are thus compared with those of the standard PID control. This approach is applied to a three-phase asynchronous motor (LS90Lz). The presented study improves the transient response time and the precision of the servo system. An inversion of the reference speed of rotation is considered, and the results are very convincing.

Application of Pattern Search Algorithm based Automatic Generation Control of an Interconnected Power System

This paper demonstrates the advantage of the selection of the Pattern Search algorithm (PS) in the design of a Proportional-Integral controller used in Automatic Generation Control for a two area non-reheat interconnected thermal system. The design problem involves the implementation of PS algorithm to find out the value of parameters of the controller of the proposed power system. Here we have implemented three objective functions by using ITAE, damping ratio of dominant eigenvalues and settling time with weight coefficients for the design problem to get an optimized parameter of the Proportional Integral controller. The robustness of the designed PI controller using the Pattern search algorithm has been demonstrated after comparing other PI controllers using various optimization techniques like Genetic Algorithm, Bacteria Foraging Optimization Algorithm for the system under study. Further, best objective function uses the PS optimization algorithm in PI/PID controller parameters, tunning is obtained in presence of physical constraints like governor dead band non linearity of the proposed two area power system. The modified model to test the sensitivity analysis of PI/PID controller by using different loading condition to show the PID controller performance of frequency and tie line power deviation improved better as compared to the PI controller of the same power system. Further, it is extended to multi-area multi-source power for effectiveness and robustness of the system under different disturbances to check the transient stability.

Design and Research of a Two Level Fuzzy PID Electronic Control System for Automotive Semi-Active Suspension

In response to the problem of outdated traditional PID control performance and excessively single control parameters in automotive suspension, a two level fuzzy PID control system for automotive semi-active suspension is proposed. The system has two control loops: the first level control loop is PID control, and the second level control loop is fuzzy control. The second level control loop fully utilizes the motion state of unsprung mass that affects the comprehensive performance of the suspension to achieve fine adjustments to the PID controller control parameters in the first level control loop, making the PID controller control parameters more suitable for adjusting suspension performance after hierarchical adjustment, thereby achieving the goal of improving ride comfort. The analysis data shows that the control performance of the two level fuzzy PID control system is significantly better than that of the PID control system, and the comprehensive performance of the suspension and ride comfort has been significantly improved.

Design and preliminary evaluation of a lower limb exoskeleton based on hydraulic actuator

PurposeThis paper aims to propose a novel system design and control algorithm of lower limb exoskeleton, which provides walking assistance and load sharing for the wearer.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, the valve-controlled asymmetrical hydraulic cylinder is selected for driving the hip and knee joint of exoskeleton. Pressure shoe is developed that purpose on detecting changes in plantar force, and a fuzzy recognition algorithm using plantar pressure is proposed. Dynamic model of the exoskeleton is established, and the sliding mode control is developed to implement the position tracking of exoskeleton. A series of prototype experiments including benchtop test, full assistance, partial assistance and loaded walking experiments are set up to verify the tracking performance and power-assisted effect of the proposed exoskeleton.FindingsThe control performance of PID control and sliding mode control are compared. The experimental data shows the tracking trajectories and tracking errors of sliding mode control and demonstrate its good robustness to nonlinearities. sEMG of the gastrocnemius muscle tends to be significantly weakened during assisted walking.Originality/valueIn this paper, a structure that the knee joint and hip joint driven by the valve-controlled asymmetrical cylinder is used to provide walking assistance for the wearer. The sliding mode control is proposed to deal with the nonlinearities during joint rotation and fluids. It shows great robustness and frequency adaptability through experiments under different motion frequencies and assistance modes. The design and control method of exoskeleton is a good attempt, which takes positive impacts on the productivity or quality of the life of wearers.

Enhancing time-domain performance of vehicle cruise control system by using a multi-strategy improved RUN optimizer

This paper addresses the pressing concern of traffic safety by focusing on the optimization of vehicle cruise control systems. While traditional control techniques have been widely employed, their design procedures can be time-consuming and suboptimal. To overcome these limitations, metaheuristic algorithms have been introduced as promising solutions for complex optimization problems. In this study, an improved Runge Kutta optimizer (IRUN) is developed and applied to enhance the control performance of a real PID plus second-order derivative (RPIDD2) controller for vehicle cruise control systems. The IRUN optimizer incorporates advanced strategies such as quadratic interpolation, Laplacian segment mutation, Levy flight, and information-sharing-based local search mechanisms. By integrating these strategies, the IRUN algorithm demonstrates enhanced optimization capabilities, making it well-suited for tuning the controller. The proposed approach utilizes a master–slave system, where the ideal reference model sets the desired response and the RPIDD2 controller adjusts its parameters accordingly. The integral of the square error is employed as the objective function to evaluate the control system's performance. Statistical analyses, convergence analyses, and stability evaluations and robustness analysis are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the IRUN-based RPIDD2 controller. Comparative studies are conducted against established approaches using PID, fractional-order PID (FOPID), and RPIDD2 controllers, showcasing the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed approach. Overall, this paper presents a comprehensive study on enhancing the time-domain performance and stability of vehicle cruise control systems, providing significant improvements in control accuracy and efficiency. The subsequent sections delve into the proposed approach, experimental setup, and obtained results, further emphasizing the significance and potential impact of this research.

Experimental Validation of Fractional PID Controllers Applied to a Two-Tank System

An experimental validation of fractional-order PID (FOPID) controllers, which were applied to a two coupled tanks system, is presented in this article. Two FOPID controllers, a continuous FOPID (cFOPID) and a discrete FOPID (dFOPID), were implemented in real-time. The gains tuning process was accomplished by applying genetic algorithms while considering the cost function with respect to the tracking error and control effort. The gains optimization process was performed directly to the two-tanks non-linear model. The real-time implementation used a National Instruments PCIe-6321 card as a data acquisition system; for the interface, we used a Simulink Matlab and Simulink Desktop Real-Time Toolbox. The performance of the fractional controllers was compared with the performance of classical PID controllers.

Structure Optimization and Control Design of Electronic Oxygen Regulator

The oxygen regulator is the core component of the aircraft life support system, which adjusts the flow and pressure of the breathing gas according to the pilot’s breathing needs. In response to the problem that structural parameters are difficult to adjust and prone to jitter when the indirect oxygen regulator system is stable, a direct oxygen regulator is designed using a stepper motor to drive a lung-type flapper, replacing the diaphragm lever-type structure of the indirect oxygen regulator. Due to the nonlinearity and time-varying nature of the dynamic characteristics of oxygen regulators, a single-neuron PID control strategy based on online identification of RBF neural networks is proposed to improve the PID control performance. The RBF neural network is used to identify the Jacobian information of the controlled object, and the single-neuron PID controller completes the online adjustment of the controller parameters to realize the intelligent control of the system. Simulation experimental studies are conducted to verify the performance of the direct oxygen regulator. The result analysis verifies the excellence of the single-neuron PID control strategy based on online recognition of the RBF neural network to improve the system performance.

Research on intervention PID control of VAV terminal based on LabVIEW

In recent years, the research on the control method of variable air volume (VAV) has been the focus of VAV air-conditioning research. Single terminal PID control is prone to overshoot in the system when the temperature difference is large. Aiming at the deficiency of single terminal PID control at the air conditioning terminal, a control method of coupling intervention control and PID control is proposed. This thesis used LabVIEW simulation and experiment to analyze the performance of terminal intervention PID control. According to the experiment, the change of room temperature after adding 1500W heat load in the room was recorded by thermocouple, and the step response of room temperature was obtained. The LabVIEW simulation program of PID and intervention PID control is established according to the characteristics of room step response. The reliability of LabVIEW simulation program was verified by experimental data, respectively. The intervention PID control and conventional PID control are simulated by LabVIEW simulation program under 1000W and 1500w load to compare their stability, anti-interference and robustness. The experiments and simulation results show that the control strategy using the intervention recognition algorithm nested with the PID algorithm has good dynamic performance, robustness, and adaptability.

Implementation-oriented filtered PID control: Optimization of robustness margins

In this paper, we investigate the gain and phase robustness of PID control in stabilizing linear time-invariant (LTI) systems subject to gain and phase variations. We consider specifically filtered PID controllers, out of the necessity in practical implementation of PID controllers. We examine first-order unstable systems and seek to find analytical expressions of the maximal gain and phase margins achievable by filtered PID control, where the maximal gain and phase margins are referred to as the largest ranges of gain and phase variations within which the system is guaranteed to be stabilizable. Our results show that the maximal gain margin can be determined explicitly, while the maximal phase margin can be computed by solving a third-order polynomial, which in turn can be solved explicitly. We also investigate the gain and phase maximization problems subject to a performance constraint, which has direct linkages to the steady-state and transient performances of a system. Our results show how in a practically implementable PID control scheme the gain and phase margins may be confined by the plant characteristics, and how in the limit it can perform equally well as other optimal controllers. The results also shed light into the tradeoff between performance and robustness of PID controllers.

Assessing the Effectiveness of Fuzzy-PID Controller under Temperature Setpoint Changes During Coffee Roasting Process

Roasting coffee is an essential step in the production of coffee because it affects the flavour, aroma, and overall quality of the final product. Temperature control during the roasting process is essential to achieve a consistent and desired taste. This study seeks to assess the performance of a Fuzzy PID (FPID) controller during coffee roasting when the temperature setpoint varies. The temperature range in this study is from 34-200℃. The study employs an SR500 coffee roaster as the process plant, a FOPDT model structure, a PID-AMIGO benchmark controller, FPID-3 and FPID-5 controllers as the proposed controller. The study includes both simulation and real-time testing for the FPID-5 controller. The results for the FPID-5 controller indicated that the overshoot was reduced to 0.24% and 4.04% in simulation and 2.9% and 8.6% in real-time testing, representing an improvement of more than 90% in overshoot reduction compared to the PID controller. Thus, the proposed FPID-5 controller has been proven to effectively suppress overshoot during temperature setpoint changes in the coffee roasting process. Performance of the optimal nonlinear pid controller for position control of antenna azimuth position system

This study presents the improvement in the performance of the Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller for position control of antenna azimuth position system subjected to external disturbance. The design of the PID controller is developed by adding the arc tan function of error instead of the direct error in an integral part of the PID controller, yielding a Nonlinear PID controller (NPID). A Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is used in this study to tune the parameters of the PID and NPID controllers using the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) cost function. The simulations have been accomplished under the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The simulation results show that a PSO-based NPID controller provides superior steady and transient state performance compared to a PSO-based PID controller. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified via numerical simulation compared to the performance of other controllers with and without external disturbance.

Intelligent Adaptive PID Control for the Shaft Speed of a Marine Electric Propulsion System Based on the Evidential Reasoning Rule

To precisely and timely control the shaft speed for a marine electric propulsion system under normal sea conditions, a new shaft speed control technique combining the evidential reasoning rule with the traditional PID controller was proposed in this study. First, an intelligent adaptive PID controller based on the evidential reasoning rule was designed for a marine electric propulsion system to obtain the PID parameters KP, KI, and KD. Then, a local iterative optimization strategy for model parameters was proposed. Furthermore, the parameters of the adaptive PID controller model were optimized in real time by using the sequential linear programming algorithm, which enabled the adaptive adjustment of KP, KI, and KD. Finally, the performance of the adaptive PID controller regarding the shaft speed control was compared with that of other controllers. The results showed that the adaptive PID controller designed in this study had better control performance, and the shaft speed control method based on the adaptive PID controller could better control the shaft speed of the marine electric propulsion system.

Research on the Control Performance of Depth-Fixed Motion of Underwater Vehicle Based on Fuzzy-PID

The control performance of the fixed-depth motion is related to the performance of the underwater vehicle. Due to the complex and changing environment underwater and various potential risks, the variety of underwater operations, and the variability of the structural parameters and environmental parameters of the underwater vehicle, the control performance is compromised when performing constant depth motion. It is of much significance to study the control method of the fixed-depth motion to improve the performance of the underwater vehicle. The transfer function of underwater vehicle’s depth-setting motion was established, and the fuzzy-PID controller was established for simulating the control of depth-setting movements of underwater vehicles. The interaction law between PID initial parameters and controller performance was studied, and the interaction law between the change of underwater vehicle mass and the hydrodynamic coefficient and controller performance was also studied. The results show that the fuzzy-PID controller can realize the control of the underwater vehicle’s depth-setting motion, and the control effect was independent of the initial PID parameters, thus avoiding the dependence of the formulation of PID parameters on manual control experience. When the mass and hydrodynamic coefficient of the underwater vehicle change, the fuzzy-PID controller can still maintain good control performance and has strong adaptive ability.

Real-Time Level Control of Spherical Tank Process using Gain Scheduled PID Controller

The objective of this paper is to maintain the level inside the process tank in a desired value. The real time implementation of the process is designed and implemented in MATLAB. Gain scheduled PID controller is designed to enhance the performance of the conventional PID controller for nonlinear spherical tank process. It is based on linearization of the nonlinear model around selected operating points. The linear design methods are applied at each region in order to arrive at a set of linear control laws. Research on Three Cylinder Synchronous Control Based on Tracking Differentiator and Fuzzy PID

Aiming at the problem of three-cylinder asynchronous caused by nonlinear factors in the three-cylinder synchronous control system, a fuzzy PID synchronous control method with a tracking differentiator based on an adjacent cross-coupling control strategy is proposed. Fuzzy PID control is used to adjust P, I, and D parameters online, and the tracking differentiator is used in fuzzy control to filter the input error and error differential of fuzzy control. After the controller design is completed, the combined simulation model of the three-cylinder control system is built by AMESim and Simulink. The simulation results verify that the performance of the fuzzy PID controller with tracking differentiator is smaller than the maximum synchronization and average error of the ordinary PID, which can be better applied to the three-cylinder synchronous control system.
