Laboratory study of metakaolin and microsilica effect on the performance of high-strength concrete containing Forta fibers

In the present study aims to produce high-strength fiber concrete containing microsilica and metakaolin. Eight concrete mixing samples have been defined. The samples include the control concrete with ordinary Portland cement, replacing 10 percent of the weight of cement with microsilica. The amount of microsilica was kept constant in the next six designs. Three samples with the addition of Forta fibers at the rate of 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8 percent. Finally three samples with 0.5% Forta fibers and 8, 10 and 12% metakaolin were subjected to compressive, tensile and elastic modulus tests at the ages of 7 and 28 days. The addition of Forta fibers and the replacement of microsilica and metakaolin in concrete reduced the slump of concrete up to 5 cm. The highest compressive strength, tensile strength and elastic modulus at the age of 28 days of design 8 (concrete containing 10% microsilica, 0.5% Forte fibers and 12% metakaolin) are respectively equal to 73.6 MPa, 5.55 MPa and 37.49 MPa with The increase was 19.43%, 32.77% and 15.21% compared to control concrete without pozzolan and additives. Also, the relationship between compressive and tensile strength were presented. In total, all samples containing microsilica and fibers had a favorable effect on the resistance properties of concrete compared to the control design. The constant concern of bridge engineers, especially concrete bridges, is the production of concrete with high-strength and very low permeability in the face of their surroundings. Therefore, the result of this research can be a significant contribution to improving the quality of concrete used in bridge constructions.

Performance of High-Strength Concrete with the Effects of Seashell Powder as Binder Replacement and Waste Glass Powder as Fine Aggregate

Seashell powder (SSP) is a waste from aquatic life that is generally available near the coastal region. Due to its high calcium content, SSP can be utilized as a supplementary cementitious binder. SSP can be used as a sustainable binder to replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and significantly reduce the carbon footprint. The present study investigates the effects of SSP and waste glass powder (WGP) on the fresh, mechanical, and microstructure properties of high-strength concrete (HSC). The SSP utilized in this research was varied, with 5%, 10%, and 15% cement replacement levels. The impact of WGP was also observed with two replacement levels, 5% and 10%, replacing natural sand. The slump flow of all the HSC mixes varied between 700 and 785 mm. A maximum compressive strength of 112.91 MPa was found for the C75SSP5 mix at 56 days. The split tensile strength values of all the HSC mixes were found in a range from 5.45 to 10.56 MPa. The modulus of elasticity values of all the HSC mixes were found to lie between 40.2 and 46.8 GPa. The lowest water absorption was observed in the mix containing 5% SSP. The SEM image of the HSC with increased SSP showed that it was denser and had fewer unreacted particles. XRD and EDS showed the presence of various gels, such as calcium silicate hydrates (CSHs), ettringite, calcium hydroxide (CH), and calcium carbonate (CC). The predicted equations for its split tensile strength, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, and water absorption were also carried out in the present research.

Experimental investigation of GFRP-RC beams with Polypropylene fibers and waste granite recycled aggregate

Nowadays, using Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) rebars has attained high attention owing to their advantages, such as high tensile strength and corrosion resistance. GFRP rebars can be used in conjunction with Polypropylene (PP) fibers to alleviate reinforcing congestion in high-rebar-density areas of Reinforced Concrete (RC) beams as a substitute for shear reinforcement. This study aims to investigate the simultaneous impact of GFRP and PP fibers on improving the shear performance of High-Strength (HS) Recycled Coarse Aggregate (RCA) concrete beams. 36 RC beams were produced, and the influence of longitudinal GFRP rebars ratio, shear span-to-depth ratio, RCA, and fiber content on the shear behavior of specimens was assessed. The load–displacement behavior, maximum load-bearing capacity and deformation, maximum shear resistance, ductility, stiffness, toughness, modes of failure, and post-cracking strength of the specimens were studied. In addition, the results were compared with the available design codes for the shear resistance of RC beams. The testing results showed that with increasing the RCA content, PP fibers were more operative in enhancing the shear performance of High Strength Concrete (HSC) beams reinforced by GFRP rebars. Additionally, to provide enough ductility and to avoid a sudden shear failure, the use of PP fibers and RCA is recommended since the greatest improvement in ductility and deformability of HSC was observed when both of them were simultaneously employed.

Strength performance of concrete is characterized by its compressive strength, elastic modulus, stiffness and energy absorption capacity. Stress strain behaviour of concrete encompasses information on all these parameters, and is thus one of the most vital data to assess its overall performance. The present study utilizes the stress strain response, as a tool, to compare the relative variation in performance of conventional and high strength concrete. Two set of mix compositions (viz., M40 and M80 grade concrete) have been designed. The designed compositions are checked for their target strength by performing load controlled tests on 28 day cured cube specimens. M40 grade concrete comprises of cement and water as binding material, and fine and coarse aggregates as filler. High strength concrete (M80 grade) is designed with cement, mineral admixture and water as binding material; while the fine and coarse aggregates contribute to the filler material. For high strength concrete, super plasticizer has been added in required proportion to ensure adequate workability. Displacement control tests, with controlled strain rate, have been performed on 28 day cured cube specimens. Variability in pre-peak and post-peak stress strain response is analysed for both conventional and high strength concrete. An average of response over atleast four samples is computed for both the M40 and M80 grade concrete. In present study, the characteristic response is normalized with respect to peak strength to obtain a common reference basis and compared. The comparison is summarized in terms of change in pre-peak response and post-peak ductility. The observed results enable quantification of relative change in performance for M40 and M80 grade of concrete. The results are significant for benchmarking performance of high strength concrete structures with those of conventional concrete structures.

Triple Blending Effect of Fly Ash, Silica Fume and Steel Fibers on Performance of High Strength Concrete

Abstract: Compressive strength is an integral property of concrete that play a key role in the construction industry. The present works investigates the effect of triple blend of fly ash, silica fume and steel fibers on the compressive, split tensile and flexural strength of concrete. Fly ash (FA) and silica fume (SF) are introduced as a partial replacement for cement for various additions of steel fibers by volume of concrete. A replacement level of 0% FA with 0 %, 5%, 10%, 15% SF in place of cement for 0% addition of steel fibers by volume of concrete is used for the preparation of first set of samples. Second set of samples were prepared with the change in fly ash proportion to 20%, keeping replacement levels of SF unchanged for 0% inclusion of steel fibers and the last set of samples were prepared with 40% FA replacement percentage without any change in the replacements of SF for the same 0% steel fibers. Likewise, the same combinations of FA and SF were repeated for 0.5% and 1% steel fibers and tested for various strength results after 28 days curing. Later, it is seen that an optimum mix of 20% FA with 10% SF for 1% inclusion of steel fibers, produced the maximum compressive strength of 81.20 N/mm2 and maximum flexural strength of 8.40 N/mm2. High performance concrete has become an attractive option to Civil Engineers due to the special characteristics like early strength, ease of placement, permeability, mechanical and durability properties. The performance of High strength Concrete (HSC) is enhanced by the addition of admixtures which act as pozzolans as well as fillers, thereby improving the microstructure of the interfacial transition zone making it denser and impermeable. Silica Fume (SF) is a commonly used pozzolanic material owing to its high silicon dioxide content and fineness. This ultra fine property of SF used in concrete to improve its strength and durability.

Simultaneous Effect of Aggregate and Cement Matrix on the Performance of High Strength Concrete

In the current experimental work, the simultaneous effect of fineness modulus, water-to-cementitious materials [W/(C+M)], and also micro silica content were investigated on workability, mechanical and physical properties of high strength concrete. For this purpose, 45 mix-designs were made by selecting five different ratios of micro-silica, three W/(C+M) ratios, and three distributions of particle size and then the slump, compressive strength, elastic modulus, and split tensile strength of each designed concrete mixture were determined. Findings showed that increasing the micro-silica content up to 10 wt% improves the mechanical properties of concrete and then leads to a reduction in strength parameters, so that the effect of changes in the micro-silica content on mechanical parameters of concrete becomes more prominent with increasing and decreasing the fineness modulus of aggregate and W/(C+M) ratio, respectively. It was also observed that increasing the micro-silica content leads to reducing the slump and unit weight of concrete so that this reduction is more noticeable in the low fineness modulus of aggregate and water-cement ratio.

Structural Performance Assessment of High Strength Concrete Containing Spent Garnet under Three Point Bending Test

The utilization of river sand for miscellaneous construction purposes had directly increased due to rapid growth of construction industry. This fact caused over exploitation of riverbeds and troubled the eco-system. This study aims to find out the optimum percentage of spent garnet in high strength concrete and to forecast the structural performance of high strength concrete containing spent garnet with the previous research results. This study focusing on comparing and forecasting the utilization of 0%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% spent garnet as a sand replacement in high strength concrete at the age of 28 days. The level of 20% replacement of sand seen to be the optimum percentage of spent garnet for this concrete mixture to enhance its structure performance. It is concluded that, utilization of spent garnet in high strength concrete production able to reduce the dependency on river sand and lesser the waste from landfill.

Texture analysis of the microstructure of concrete with different concentrations of superabsorbent polymer after internal curing

Internal curing has been widely used in high-strength concrete because it can replenish water for cement hydration and reduce self-shrinkage. The internal curing effects mostly depend on the self-shrinkage changes and mechanical parameters obtained through a destructive test. This research proposes a fast and nondestructive detection method based on image recognition analysis to determine the effects of internal curing material content on the performance of high-strength concrete. The superabsorbent polymer (SAP) was chosen as the internal curing material. Laboratory uniaxial compression tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy were used to analyze the mechanical properties and phase characteristics of the concrete. Based on the SEM images, the gray level co-occurrence matrix was used to extract texture features of the concrete, and effective SEM image samples were screened out to verify the correlation between texture features and mechanical strength. The results showed that: (1) the four characteristic values of GLCM have a significant linear correlation with SAP content; (2) with the increase in SAP content, self-shrinkage decreases and reaches the smallest point when the SAP content is 0.24 % of the cementing material content; and (3) the relative dynamic modulus of elasticity and maximum shrinkage are negatively correlated with the energy and correlation and positively correlated with the contrast and entropy. Such results provide a simple method of determining the influence of internal curing content on concrete performance.

Discussion on Calculation Method of Shear Bearing Capacity of HSC Beams Without Web Reinforcement under Concentrated Loads

In order to investigate the main influencing factors and development rules of the shear performance of high strength concrete (HSC) beams without web reinforcement under concentrated loads, analyze and compare the rationality of the China and American Code formulas and Zsutty formula, in this paper, 303 sets of experimental data about the shear test of HSC beams without web reinforcement at home and abroad were selected, based on these experimental data, the calculation method of the shear capacity of HSC beams without web reinforcement was discussed. The results showed that the measured shear bearing capacity of HSC beams without web reinforcement gradually increases with the decrease of the shear-span ratio. The nominal shear stress of HSC beams without web reinforcement gradually increases with the increase of concrete strength, the increase of longitudinal reinforcement ratio and the decrease of section height. The shear bearing capacity formula proposed by Zsutty is the most accurate prediction than other formulas. Based on the experimental data and considering the influence of the longitudinal reinforcement ratio on the shear bearing capacity of structure, a new calculation formula for the shear bearing capacity of HSC beams without web reinforcement under concentrated loads was obtained by regression analyze, and this formula is more comprehensive than the other three calculation formulas, moreover, the calculation results are more reasonable.

Performance of high strength concrete containing recycled rubber

Recycling and Utilizing waste rubber as a replacement of natural aggregate in concrete is a promising environmentally friendly solution. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of high strength concrete where the recycled rubber partially replace the fine aggregate. Four different mixes were produced in which crumb rubber partially replaced fine aggregate by 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% of volume. Slump, compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, density, abrasion resistance, seawater effect on rubberized concrete, impact resistance, and microstructural analysis were evaluated. The rubberized concrete mixes showed good workability and slightly lower density than the control mix. A systematic reduction of almost up to 50% in compressive, tensile, and flexural strength was witnessed with increasing the rubber content up to 30%. Lower abrasion resistance was obtained with increasing the rubber content. The rubberized concrete mixes displayed good behavior in seawater. The rubberized concrete mixes also showed up to 83% higher impact resistance compared to the control mix. The findings of this study give an overview of the effect of addition of recycled rubber on concrete of high strength.

Performance of sustainable high strength concrete with basic oxygen steel-making (BOS) slag and nano-silica

This study presents the results of an experimental evaluation of the performance of high strength concrete (HSC) with basic oxygen steel-making (BOS) slag and nano-silica respectively used as a partial replacement of sand and cement. The properties of fresh and hardened concrete specimens containing 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% BOS as partial replacement of sand and 2% of cement replaced with nano-silica were evaluated. According to the results, concrete samples containing nano-silica with higher BOS percentages, demonstrated improvements in strength and durability properties, while workability was reduced. For example, at 50% BOS content, about 18% increase in compressive strength and 50% reduction in water absorption was observed, while slump was reduced by 40%.

Investigation on Performance of Concrete Incorporating Silica Fume and Local UAE Materials

In an effort to reduce the amount of cement in the concrete industry and produce greener concrete, emphasis was put on using several industrial by-products such as silica fume, fly ash and slag as partial replacements for cement in concrete. Due to the enormous number of mega reinforced concrete projects constructed in the United Arab Emirates, it is considered to be one of the largest consumers of high strength concrete in the region. On the other hand, only limited research has been done on high strength concrete incorporating local materials in the UAE. The main objective of this research is to conduct an investigation on the performance of high strength concrete containing silica fume as partial replacement of ordinary Portland cement incorporating superplasticizers and local UAE materials by studying its mechanical properties and durability. The experimental program involved two groups: The first group had a water-to-binder material ratio (w/b) of 0.4, whereas, the second group had w/b = 0.3. For both groups the silica fume replacement percentages were 0 (control mix) 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, and 15 percent. The mechanical properties were tested at 7, 28, and 91 days and the durability tests were performed at 28 days. The results were compared to the control mix and they showed that for all the curing ages studied the use of silica fume as partial replacement of OPC has favorable effect on the compressive strength values and the optimum replacement ratios of silica fume for the tested specimens are found to be at 12.5% and 10% replacement for the w/b ratios of 0.3 and 0.4, respectively. For all the four performed durability tests the replacement of the OPC with silica fume is found to have favorable results and the higher the silica fume percentage replacement of OPC the more favorable the results are. Performance of High Strength Concrete Subjected to Elevated Temperatures: A Review

Advancement in the field of construction has given rise to the modification of conventional materials in order to utilize the full potential of their components to achieve high durability, strength, and other engineering characteristics. Construction materials should ideally be environmental friendly. These diverse requirements resulted in the invention of high strength concrete (HSC). A rapidly increasing use of HSC in most of the construction projects has encouraged researchers to identify its behavior at elevated temperatures. This has led to the recognition of an inadequate understanding of elevated temperatures’ effects on the behavior of HSC. This paper initially provides necessary information about HSC and relates its benefits. A number of different design standards for the preparation of HSC are also presented and compared. Previous research activities performed on HSC to identify the effect of elevated temperatures on the properties of HSC are reviewed. Findings showed that the mechanical properties of NSC decreases at a 10% to 20% higher rate than HSC ranging between ambient temperature and approximately 350°C, depending upon the mix proportions and initial compressive strength of the concrete. The differences become narrower at temperature above 350°C. Major failure modes are identified and future recommendations are presented.
