Innovative Approaches to Urban Drainage System : A Review

Conventional urban drainage systems are often unable to cope with extreme rainfall and rapid urbanization, resulting in flooding and water pollution. Innovative approaches are needed to improve the performance and sustainability of urban drainage systems. This research aims to explore and analyze innovative approaches in urban drainage systems to improve efficiency, sustainability and resilience to climate change. This type of research is literature research. Data collection techniques are direct observation through journal databases and documentation. Data analysis in the research is qualitative data analysis. The results concluded a promising innovative approach to improve the performance and sustainability of urban drainage systems. Integrated application of this innovative approach can help create more resilient, sustainable and environmentally friendly urban drainage systems, contributing to healthier and climate change resilient cities. Further research is needed to evaluate the long-term effectiveness and scalability of this approach in various urban contexts.

MODELING OF AN AUTOMATIC CONTROL SYSTEM FOR SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS IN DRAINAGE WELLS IN THE MATLAB SOFTWARE ENVIRONMENT

The accumulation of moisture due to summer showers or due to sudden melting of snow can lead to deformation of the foundation of buildings, the appearance of cracks and deflections on it, as well as the release of harmful substances into the environment. Drainage systems, especially in urban infrastructure, play an important role in effectively treating wastewater and maintaining groundwater levels at safe levels. Automatic control of submersible pumps in such systems is critical to optimizing the drainage process and minimizing flood risks. This article develops a model of an automatic control system for submersible pumps in drainage wells, which includes components such as a drainage well, a drainage pipeline valve actuator, a pump and a level sensor. The model was created in the MatLab software environment using the Simulink application package, which made it possible to simulate and analyze the process of water entering a water collection well and its pumping out using a pump, as well as to study in detail how individual blocks of the system react to incoming water. The results of this work can be useful for engineers and designers working in the field of hydraulic engineering. They can use the model to optimize control systems and to predict and analyze the performance of drainage systems.

Hydraulic Characterization of Permeable Materials Used for Filling Mole Drain Channels in Structurally Unstable Soils

Highlights Permeable materials can be used to fill mole drains and provide support to the cavity walls in structurally unstable soils. Permeable materials extend the lifespan and improve the hydraulic performance of mole drainage systems. Darcy’s law for nonlinear porous flow explained the hydraulic performance of the permeable materials used in this study. A numerical method was established to assess the suitability of permeable materials of unknown hydraulic performance. Design guidelines were developed to assist in the planning of filled mole drainage systems installed in structurally unstable soils. Abstract. Mole drainage in soils with low permeability is a cost-effective technique for managing soil drainage. Following installation, the satisfactory performance of the system will depend on having sufficient soil fissure development extending from the soil surface to the roof of the mole channel and mole channel stability to avoid its collapse. Permeable materials such as river-run gravel and crushed stone can be used to fill mole channels to prevent channel collapse in halomorphic and high-silt content (e.g., 50%–70%) soils and extend the lifespan of the system. The objectives of this work were to: (i) characterize a range of permeable materials that can be used to fill mole drains and provide support to the cavity walls in structurally unstable soils; (ii) verify the applicability of Darcy’s law to explain the hydraulic performance of such materials, and (iii) develop a set of design and planning guidelines aimed at improving the performance of mole drainage systems that are filled with permeable materials. Five permeable materials were characterized, namely: three types of river-run gravels, crushed baked mud bricks, and crushed stone. The materials were characterized for their mechanical and hydraulic properties, and the applicability of Darcy’s law was experimentally determined. Small- and medium-sized gravels are easy to handle and apply during field installation due to their shape and flowability properties and the reduced risk of clogging when placed in the mole channel. However, the hydraulic performance of these materials would not allow for system designs longer than about 100 m, which therefore would limit their utilization in practice. Large-sized gravel offered an intermediate solution with overall satisfactory hydraulic performance. Crushed brick and crushed stone offered good alternatives to gravel, allowing for longer (e.g., >120 m) system designs for all combinations of drain spacing and drain gradient. However, their angularity, poor uniformity, and size range distribution can compromise the efficiency of handling and delivery in current mole plough systems. For all materials, the hydraulic conductivity (Kh) decreased with an increase in the hydraulic gradient. For a given hydraulic gradient, Kh was dependent on aggregate size, such that a larger D50 value led to increased Kh. The nonlinear performance of Darcy’s law was verified for all materials, and potential equations were fitted to represent such relationships, all showing acceptable fits to the nonlinear models (P<0.001). A linear relationship (P<0.05) between the parameter m of the potential model and total porosity was established. The set of equations developed by this study will enable estimating Kh based on the aggregate size distribution or as a function of the total porosity of the material. Crushed brick and crushed stone could provide a cost-effective solution for the installation of filled mole drain systems in structurally unstable soils. Analysis of flooding and nature-based solutions in the improvement of urban drainage system

This paper studies the drainage system performance of a conventional system with concrete channels and a retention pond. Also, the analysis of runoff reduction by implementing a nature-based solutions (NBSs) technique of rainwater harvesting and recharge well. The case study site is located in an industrial area in West Karawang City, West Java. The analysis was carried out by simulating the flood event using rainfall data from the site for a 10-year return period. The flood simulation was performed using the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). The model consists of the analysis of flooding events in the drainage system and retention pond and the analysis of flooding prevention scenarios. The result reveals that the cause of the flooding is an extreme rainfall event which leads to the large accumulation of water at one junction point. Moreover, although the capacity of the retention pond is sufficient, the discharge rate is way larger than the infiltration rate, so the overflow occurred and resulted in flooding. The scenario of widening the drainage channel and installing a pump in the retention pond provides a good solution scenario to prevent flooding. The implementation of rainwater harvesting and recharge well could reduce the surface runoff volume of 21%. Further study should be conducted to analyze the combination of conventional and NBSs drainage system performance under the highest daily rainfall of the series.

Design of subsurface drainage network with minimum overall cost using Lagrange multiplier optimization

AbstractSubsurface drainage is effective for not only controlling groundwater levels in agricultural lands but also alleviating soil salinity localized at the root zone, especially for arid and semi‐arid agro‐ecosystems. In this research, an optimization model that minimizes the overall costs of subsurface drainage systems subjected to design constraints was formulated. The Lagrange multiplier method for optimization was utilized to derive a general differential equation for obtaining the most economical design of the subsurface drainage system. Design charts for the minimum cost of the subsurface drainage network ($ ha−1) for lateral diameters (dL) of 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 cm; hydraulic conductivities (K) of 0.5, 1, 2, 3 and 4 m day−1; different lateral lengths (LL) of 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 m; a constant collector length (LC) of 1000 m (assuming laterals join the collector from both sides); drainage recharge (q) values of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm day−1; and excavation depths of 1.5 and 2.0 m were developed. The minimum computed subsurface drainage network (SSDN) costs observed at a lateral length (LL) of 300 m were 205, 246, 288, 331 and 374 ($ ha−1) for lateral diameters of 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10 and 12.5 cm, respectively, corresponding to lateral spacing of 175, 176, 177, 178 and 179 m. The suggested charts for the optimum design of a subsurface drainage system have lower overall costs than using conventional design approaches for pipelines and tube wells. The results will support solutions for designers to implement subsurface drainage systems with less and more affordable expenses in the old lands of the Nile delta of Egypt and other regions with similar agrosystems. Quality control during construction is very necessary for guaranteeing the effective and sustainable performance of subsurface drainage systems for many years.

Combined settlement and clogging in drainage sand layer for suspended solids, colloids and inorganic salts

Blockage of leachate drainage facilities is a common engineering problem in landfill operation. The key factors that cause blockage of drainage facilities in landfill leachate are the deposition of suspended solids (SS) with colloids and the precipitation of inorganic salts. To determine the combined sedimentation law of SS, colloids and inorganic salts, a combined sedimentation test of suspended solids, colloids and inorganic salts was conducted. To further clarify the resulting clogging characteristics of the water-conducting sand layers, a sand column blocking test were conducted, and mineral composition and grain characteristics of sediments were determined. The experimental results shown that the colloids (silver iodide) and inorganic salts (calcium chloride or aluminum sulfate) increased the sedimentation rate of SS by 8 to18 times. Among them, the effect of AgI colloid was the most significant, followed by effect of calcium chloride, while effect of aluminum sulfate was the weakest. Compared with sand column clogging caused by SS, this combined migration shortened the sand column clogging time by more than half and reduced hydraulic conductivity by nearly two to three orders of magnitude. This study contributes to the accurate assessment of the service performance of landfill leachate drainage systems.

Assessment of the drainage systems performance in response to future scenarios and flood mitigation measures using stormwater management model

Urban Flooding represents a significant problem in developing urban areas caused by inadequate stormwater drainage systems, increased impervious surface areas, and climate change. The performance of drainage systems can be evaluated using simulation models such as the stormwater management simulation model (SWMM). In this study, the potential impacts of future design rainfall on the performance of stormwater management systems were assessed by altering a hyetograph derived from rainfall intensity duration curves from three climate models. In addition, the effects of continued urbanization on the systems have been simulated by changing the percentage of imperviousness from current land use conditions. According to the findings, existing drainage systems cannot manage the expected flooding risks caused by a slight change in future rainfall intensity under each climate model. As a result of urban development, increasing the imperviousness ratio from 10% to 70% has increased peak runoff from 51.3 to 82.4 m3/s, flooding volume amplified from 24,320.5 x103 to 33,647.4 x103 m3 (representing 38.4% of the increase), and flooded nodes risen from 64 to 196 (representing 67.12% of raise). Overall, flooding locations and magnitude were identified, while drainage systems failed to safely convey surface runoff at baseline conditions, implying that future flooding will be more intense. As a result, selected mitigation strategies should be considered to alleviate the flooding risks that disrupt the socio-economic environment and the resulting significant property and life losses in Dodola, Ethiopia.

The assessment of drainage performance in the residential area using SWMM

Flood is a general issue that can lead to the life and safety of residents. One of the problems is the lack of capacity in the drainage system in a residential area. This paper will analyze the drainage system based on the capacity in one of the residential clusters. The method for the drainage system performance in hydrology analysis was carried out with Log Person, and the return period for rainfall duration is ten years (R10) for hydraulic analysis using drainage system modeling with EPA – SWMM 5.1. The result based on hydrological is the precipitation for flood forecasting is 159.79 mm. It is found that the drainage capacity is filled in downstream of the main drain with a maximum discharge of 2.726 m3/s and secondary drains with a maximum discharge of 0.624 m3/s. Improvements were made to resolve the insufficiency of the existing channels by running two different scenarios: (1) Re-design the dimensions of the main and secondary channels, (2) Implement a detention pond, as well as re-design the dimensions of the secondary channels. Both scenarios could overcome the flood problem. Scenario 2 shows a higher reduction in the flow discharge at the downstream channel compared to scenario 1.

Two-dimensional (2D) flood analysis and calibration of stormwater drainage systems using geographic information systems.

In recent years, there has been severe flooding in urban areas as well as coastal and river flooding. Urban flooding is exacerbated by climate change, urbanization, growing population, and the increase of impervious surfaces in urban areas. Stormwater drainage systems that discharge stormwater to a safe location in urban areas are becoming increasingly important. The objective of this study is to analyze and calibrate the flood performance of stormwater drainage systems currently used in the central region of Malatya in a potential flood situation using geographic information systems and the InfoWorks ICM. The model was created using the land use type, buildings, and digital elevation model (DEM), and the analysis was performed by exposing stormwater drainage systems to rainfall events of 5, 10, and 15 min of duration for return periods of 2, 5, and 10 years. The model was then validated using field-observed rainfall and flood data and its performance was evaluated using R2, NSE, RMSE, and MAE metrics. The results showed that the eight stormwater drainage systems currently in operation cannot fully convey stormwater and may pose a risk of loss of life and property in residential areas. In addition, the severity of the flooding was found to increase with an increasing return period.

Study on drainage mode and anti-clogging performance of new waterproofing and drainage system in a tunnel

With an increase in tunnel construction and retention, traditional waterproofing and drainage systems have been unable to meet the needs of tunnels in heavy rainfall areas, and disasters such as tunnel lining cracking, leakage, and even collapse, occur frequently. In order to ensure the safe operation and maintenance of tunnels, this paper analyses the characteristics of the traditional waterproofing and drainage system, and puts forward a new drainage structure through numerical simulation and indoor testing. This structure removes the circular drainage blind pipe and adds a convex shell drainage plate between the waterproof board and the secondary lining. The research shows that the new drainage system greatly decreases the water pressure in the easily blocked area of the drainage structure. With the special surface discharge model, the external water pressure of the lining far away from the blocked area can quickly fall back to the normal level. In addition, the drainage capacity of different waterproof and drainage boards is different. With an increase in support pressure, the drainage capacity decreases; the geotextile decreases the most, followed by the capillary drainage board and then the convex shell drainage board. At the same time, after the muddy water drainage test of the three materials, it is found that the convex shell type drainage plate has the best anti-sludge performance. The research in this paper provides a beneficial attempt for the design of waterproofing and drainage structure of a water-rich karst tunnel, and provides a guarantee for the safe operation and maintenance of the tunnel.

Calculation of Dry Weather Flows in Pumping Stations to Identify Inflow and Infiltration in Urban Drainage Systems

The performance of most urban drainage systems is adversely affected by unintended connections of groundwater and surface water, often denoted as inflow and infiltration (I&I). Various methods exist to locate and characterise these effects. Yet, it remains difficult to quantify them accurately, especially in terms of spatial distribution over a larger drainage area. One of the reasons for this is the lack of sufficient high-quality sewer flow measurements at a high temporal resolution, which would enable the calibration of detailed spatio-temporal relationships between rainfall and I&I flows. In this paper, a methodology is presented for deriving sewer flow time series from operational measurements at pumping stations, and the results from four pilot locations are discussed. It shows the potential of the methodology to be implemented at a large scale and to contribute to a better understanding and remediation of I&I in urban drainage management planning.

Modeling of road performance assessment based on pavement, shoulder, and drainage

Measuring the value of road performance requires an emphasis on optimal performance demand. In Indonesia, pavement assessment is the sole basis for evaluating performance value. However, road performance is not solely determined by pavement performance, as the performance of road shoulder and drainage systems also influences it. This study aims to create a road performance evaluation model that is quantitative in nature, taking into account both pavement performance and the frequency and size of damages to road shoulders and drainage systems. To construct the model, this study employed a Structural Equation Model. According to the findings, the condition of the road shoulder and drainage systems had an impact on the road's performance, as measured by the International Roughness Index (IRI). The subsidence factor had the most significant impact on road shoulder performance (31.1%), then followed by waterlogging (29.4%), potholes (29.2%), and pavement edge height difference and road shoulder (5.3%), in addition to shoulder slope (5.0%). The road drainage performance, on the other hand, was influenced by the cross-sectional conditions of the road drainage channel (34.6%), structural drainage (31.1%), and drainage canal slope (29.2%). The study found that pavement, road shoulder, and drainage had a respective effect of 58.1%, 20.2%, and 21.7% on road performance.

Modeling urban stormwater management in the town of Dodola based on landuse and climate change using SWMM 5.1

Study focusThis study aims to examine the impacts of landuse and climate changes on peak runoff and flooding volumes, and also evaluates the effectiveness of low-impact development using SWMM 5.1. Three decades of landuse landcover were analyzed to assess the performance of the existing drainage system. Furthermore, the effect of climate change on drainage system performance was assessed using the estimated design storms from two global climate models (CanESM2 and HadGEM2-ES). New hydrological insights for regionThe trend of landuse landcover analysis shows that the town has experienced a significant increase in the impervious surface area ranging from 59.73 % to 86.01 %. In response to urbanization, the trend of peak stormwater showed a continuously increasing trend. The field observations confirm that the landuse change has had a significant impact on the performance of stormwater drainage systems. The study also found that the peak runoff and flooding volume of the study area was increased under separate and combined effects of rainfall intensity variation due to climate change and increased impervious surface area. This finding indicates that existing drainage systems flooded due to discharge exceeding the design capacity and that profit is required when considering the effects of both land-use and climate change scenarios. Three environmentally friendly low-impact development approaches: bio-retention, permeable pavement, and a combination of the two are applied to reduce increased peak stormwater and mitigate flooding problems.

Green infrastructure drainage of a commercial plaza without directly connected impervious areas: a case study.

A paired-catchment study of two adjacent commercial areas in northern Sweden, one with Green Infrastructure (GI) storm drainage and the other with a conventional storm sewer system, served to evaluate the hydrological performance of both drainage systems and demonstrate advantages of GI. The GI catchment avoided directly connected impervious areas by diverting runoff from a parking lot to a cascade of three infiltration features, a fractured rock strip draining onto a sloping infiltration area, followed by a collector swale. Both catchments were monitored over 4 years by measuring rainfall, runoff and, in the vicinity of the swale, soil water content and groundwater levels. For frequent storms, the median GI efficiencies in reducing runoff volumes and peak flows, and extending peak flow lags, were 96, 99 and 60%, respectively, compared to conventional drainage. The storm rainfall depth, initial soil water content, increases in intra-event soil water storage and groundwater levels had statistically significant effects on either runoff volume or peak flow reductions. No effects were found for storm rainfall intensity and duration, antecedent dry days, and initial groundwater levels. The study demonstrated that GI drainage can be successfully applied even in the challenging environment of a subarctic climate.

Laboratory studies on ochre formation and removal from geotextile filters

The clogging of drainage systems due to the formation of ochre is considered a major threat to the performance of filters and drainage systems. Aiming to understand the factors leading to clogging, column tests were conducted using geotextile filters under three different filter submersion conditions and ferric citrate percolation to stimulate ochre production. After 76 days, in half of the column tests, the ferric citrate was changed to d-glucose in the percolation fluid to remove the ochre by the reductive dissolution of iron. The concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO), Fe(II), Fe(III), and pH were monitored as a function of time. Ochre-clogged geotextile filters and the effects of reductive dissolution were observed by scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The results indicated that ochre formation decreased substantially in the submerged filters due to the lower availability of oxygen for microbial aerobic activities. Percolation with d-glucose led to low DO content, reduced pH in the percolation fluid, and stimulation of a pre-existing population of iron-reducing bacteria, which reduced the Fe(III) to soluble Fe(II), reversing clogging in geotextile filters. This fundamental research may indicate a path for a new procedure for mitigation and removal of ochre of drainage systems.

Assessment of Spatial Distribution and Temporal Variations of the Phreatic Groundwater Level Using Geostatistical Modelling: The Case of Oued Souf Valley—Southern East of Algeria

Since the beginning of the 1980s, several regions in the northern Sahara of Algeria have been confronting the rising groundwater. Among all these regions, Oued Souf Valley represented one of the most acute affected by this phenomenon. Due to the natural topography and the insufficient/weakness of water management and miscoordination between different sectors that are represented by intensive exploitation of deep groundwater reservoirs which returns to the shallow aquifer, absence of sewage and drainage network, leakage from drinking water supply system, the groundwater has raised to the surface or near to the surface, affecting the traditional cultural environment and urban areas and degrading all socio-economic aspects of the Oued Souf habitants. To preserve the Oued Souf environment, a vertical drainage system has been constructed. Consequently, in this research, an evaluation of the vertical drainage system performance and its impact on groundwater level stabilization has been performed by mapping the water table of the phreatic groundwater level using geostatistical modeling using ordinary kriging (OK) interpolation method, which has been applied to analyze the spatial and temporal structure of groundwater level fluctuation. Meanwhile, hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was applied for grouping the wells based on the groundwater fluctuations for 2008, 2009, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2021. However, the vertical drainage system reflected a significant decline of groundwater from 2009 to 2018 due to the important drained volumes through it but another rising phenomenon might be threatening the region in the near future and this is what was indicated in the 2021 groundwater level data. Cluster analysis has generated four groups based on their fluctuation means that are increasing from the first group to the fourth group ascendingly. The first cluster grouped the drains that have a shallow depth (average mean of 5.91 mbgl) and declined over the clusters. The clusters are spatially combined with significant separation of the fourth cluster which represents the deepest group (12.89 mbgl). Based on this research, several factors are influencing the stability of the phreatic groundwater level and even the performance of the drainage system, the most important of which is the overexploitation from deep groundwater reservoirs such as complex terminal and continental intercalary (in drinking and irrigation) and even the illegal use of the phreatic groundwater with important quantities for irrigation and illegal industries.

Simulation of Subsurface Drainage in the Sugarcane Crop under Different Spacing and Drain Depths

Agricultural land drainage is an instrument for growing production and a tool for the conservation of land resources. The performance of land drainage systems is thus critical for achieving sustainable agricultural production Recently, many types of software have been developed in this field for modeling and simulating the performance of these systems. SISDRENA is a simulation model of the performance of underground drainage systems. The main objectives of this paper are to simulate different combination of depths and spaces between drains and to analyze their impact on potential sugarcane productivity in the western plains of Venezuela using a land drainage system model. Therefore, three climatic scenarios were defined by annual precipitation: dry years (25% below average), normal (mean) and humid (75% above average). The scenarios were implemented in three different soil types: sandy loam, loam and silt loam, with a hydraulic conductivity of 0.19, 0.26 and 0.04 m day−1, respectively. The simulation of the yield related to soil deficit (YRD) and water stress (YRW) indicated that the highest yields were reached for the larger spacing between drains and the high conductivity hydraulic of soils. In relation to the average relative productivity (YT), it was shown that in soils with a greater water retention capacity there is an inversely proportional relationship between the spacing between drains and the productivity. We concluded that in order to reach the maximum sugarcane yield, the effect of hydraulic conductivity is more important than the changes in the precipitation pattern.

Development of a risk-based optimization approach to improve the performance of urban drainage systems

ABSTRACT Considering the great deal of rainfall uncertainty in urban drainage system (UDS) design/rehabilitation, a copula-based design approach is developed within a Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) to improve system performance. Firstly, inundation zones are determined using HEC-RAS 2D and GIS tools. Then, inundation zones of flood scenarios are integrated with damage–depth functions in GIS to obtain the associated damage costs. Accordingly, a mapping is made between the flood volume (calculated by EPA-SWMM) and its related damage. This information is used in a coupled EPA-SWMM and differential evolution (DE) search algorithm to determine the best rehabilitation strategies. The approach is applied to a catchment in Tehran and its results are compared with the return-period method. Results show that the risk-based design approach could provide a 92% reduction in expected annual flood damage (EAD) and presents optimal designs with benefit-to-cost ratios up to 11, according to budget level. This approach yields more robust designs/strategies relative to the return-period method.

The life cycle assessment of subsurface drainage performance under rice-canola cropping system

The life cycle assessment (LCA) concept is a widely used tool to assess the environmental aspects of any activity throughout its life cycle. This study is the first application of LCA for assessing the agro-environmental sustainability of subsurface drainage systems under rice-canola cropping rotation. The systems included D0.65L15, D0.65L30, and D0.9L30, consisting of two depths (D=0.65 and 0.9 m) and two spacing (L= 15 and 30 m) and a bi-level drainage system with alternate depths of 0.9 and 0.65 m with 15 m spacing (Bilevel). A paddy plot with conventional surface drainage and similar cropping system was considered as control (Control). Two water management strategies, including mid-season drainage (MSD) and alternate wetting and drying (AWD), were practiced during rice-growing period. Free drainage (FD) was adopted during canola-growing period. Required field data were collected during 2011–2016, including four rice-canola-growing cycles (two MSD-FD cycles and two AWD-FD cycles). Using the LCA concept, the effectiveness of different drainage systems were assessed under the cycles of MSD-FD and AWD-FD. The AWD-FD system showed 7% less environmental impacts than MSD-FD. Also, AWD-FD reduced human health, climate change, and resource depletion indicators by 7.7%, 9.9%, and 8.4%, respectively, compared with MSD-FD, which improved the ecosystem quality index by 7.2%. The Bilevel, D0.9L30, D0.65L30, and D0.65L15 drainage systems, respectively, reduced the environmental impacts by 11.8%, 11.1%, 2.6%, and 5.9% under AWD-FD and 25.4%, 17.6%, 25.1%, and 14.1% under MSD-FD compared with Control. On average, Bilevel reduced the environmental impacts by 18.6% compared with the conventional surface drainage system. Based on the results, the LCA concept can be used as a suitable tool to evaluate the performance of subsurface drainage systems before implementation on a large scale.
