It is compressed air that is used to power instruments and control systems that are used in the production, processing, and transportation of oil and gas. (EY, 2020). This paper delves into the indispensable significance of IACs in ensuring the reliable and safe operation of oil and gas facilities, elucidating their crucial role in various operational processes, including control systems, safety devices, and process instrumentation. Through a thorough examination of the importance of instrument air in the oil and gas industry, this paper emphasizes the paramount importance of maintaining optimal performance and reliability of IACs. It discusses the key challenges and considerations associated with ensuring the continuous supply of instrument air, encompassing equipment reliability, energy efficiency, and maintenance practices. Furthermore, the paper explores effective strategies for optimizing instrument air compressor performance, encompassing proactive maintenance, technological advancements, and operational enhancements. (Abhishek Kumar et al 2021). Utilizing case studies and real-world examples, the paper illustrates the profound impact of proficient instrument air compressor management on overall facility reliability, safety, and operational efficiency. Air compressor load forecasting using artificial neural network

Air compressor systems are responsible for approximately 10% of the electricity consumed in United States and European Union industry. As many researches have proven the effectiveness of using Artificial Neural Network in air compressor performance prediction, there is still a need to forecast the air compressor electrical load profile. The objective of this study is to predict compressed air systems' electrical load profile, which is valuable to industry practitioners as well as software providers in developing better practice and tools for load management and look-ahead scheduling programs. Two artificial neural networks, Two-Layer Feed-Forward Neural Network and Long Short-Term Memory were used to predict an air compressors electrical load. Compressors with three different control mechanisms are evaluated with a total number of 11,874 observations. The forecasts were validated using out-of-sample datasets with 5-fold cross-validation. Models produced average coefficient of determination values from 0.24 to 0.94, average root-mean-square errors from 0.05 kW - 5.83 kW, and mean absolute scaled errors from 0.20 to 1.33. The results indicate that both artificial neural networks yield good results for compressors using variable speed drive (average R2 = 0.8 and no naïve forecasting), only the long short-term memory model gives acceptable results for compressors using on/off control (average R2 = 0.82 and no naïve forecasting), and no satisfactory results are obtained for load/unload type air compressors (models constituting naïve forecasting).

Thermodynamic modeling, CFD analysis and parametric study of a near-isothermal reciprocating compressor

Reciprocating compressors hold great promise for enhanced efficiency across a wide variety of microscale and macroscale systems. This article investigates the potential of isothermal compression strategies by introducing two modeling approaches for the time-dependent analysis of reciprocating compressors. First, a thermodynamic model is developed based on conservation of mass and energy for a crank-shaft mechanism (0-Dimensional model). The resulting system of differential equations are solved via MATLAB software. 0D model is suited for efficient system dynamic, control, and parametric studies. The second modeling approach is a 2D computational fluid dynamics method implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics and allows for spatiotemporal characterization of the thermodynamic parameters (namely pressure, temperature and velocity vector field). The key to the successful implementation of 2D model is applying the moving mesh to the compression chamber. Simulation is carried out for low (0.5 Hz) and high (5 Hz) frequency operation conditions which are representative of laminar and turbulent regimes, respectively. The comparison of results between 0D and 2D models shows a very good match for both speeds. It is shown that lower operational speed will result in greater heat transfer from gas, demonstrating a near-isothermal situation. Finally, we evaluate the effect of design and operation parameters on the performance of air compressor using a parametric study. As one of the most important findings, an optimum design point for the stroke to diameter ratio of the cylinder is found. The approach presented here can lead to a common language for facilitating effective communication between thermal and system engineers.

Uncertainty analysis on performance of double stage reciprocating air compressor with inter cooler

Air compressors are originating an extensive variety of situations for many processing industries, manufacturing industries and power sector. According to the energy conservation and management point of view the compressor is the main device which attracts the observation of energy engineers in many industries. For analysing the performance of the air compressor it is mandatory to measure the working parameters such as pressure, temperature, mass flow rate of air, motor speed and power. Since the measurement and instrumentation is playing a vital influence on the performance of air compressor. Therefore investigating the error on instrumentation and its influence on performance of air compressor is compulsory to regulate the eminence of experimental set-up. And these error factors will designate the effect of the uncertainty cause on the performance of air compressor. In this research work, a numerical study on uncertainty analysis were done in a double stage reciprocating air compressor with inter cooler setup which is located in sathyamangalam, Tamilnadu, India. The mandatory output for numerous applications were considered and taken for this numerical analysis of double stage reciprocating air compressor with inter cooler as per the local ambient conditions. The pressure ratio is varied from 3 to 7 in the selected experimental setup for the fixed mass flow rate in a double stage reciprocating air compressor with inter cooler. For the corresponding pressure ratios the uncertainty on the performance of air compressor based on the first law and second law analysis were mathematically modelled. Based on the model the uncertainty on the performance of compressor were found for the error of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, 0.5%, 1%, 2% in all the instruments and it was discussed in the result.

Optimizing the suitable designs, working parameters and fluid properties are the three main ways for improving the performance of air compressors. Energy and second law efficiency analysis are the necessary one to recognize the important of energy consumption and conservation. For analysing the performance of the air compressor it is mandatory to measure the working parameters such as pressure, temperature, mass flow rate of air, speed of the compressor and electrical input power. Since the measurementation and instrumentation is playing a vital influence on the performance of air compressor. Therefore investigating the error on instrumentation and its influence on performance of air compressor is compulsory to regulate the eminence of experimental set-up. And these error factors will designate the effect of the uncertainty cause on the performance of air compressor. Uncertainties are significant in all experimental dealings and must be measured throughout the various points of an experimental analysis. In this research work, a study on energy, second law uncertainty efficiency and analysis were done in a double stage reciprocating air compressor with inter cooler setup which is located in Sathyamangalam, Tamilnadu, India. Based on the local ambient conditions and required output for various applications were taken for this performance analysis of double stage reciprocating air compressor with inter cooler. The discharge pressure from the double stage compression is varied from 3 bar to 7 bar. For the corresponding output pressure, first law and second law efficiency of the system was calculated. For the fixed mass flow rate of air the calculated first law efficiency of the system varies from 38% to 64% and second law efficiency of the system varies from 57% to 67%. For the corresponding pressure ratios the uncertainty on the performance of air compressor based on the first law and second law analysis were mathematically modelled. Based on the model the uncertainty on the performance of compressor were found for the error of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, 0.5%, 1%, 2% in all the instruments and it was discussed in the result.

Conflict Resolution for Product Performance Requirements Based on Propagation Analysis in the Extension Theory

Traditional product data mining methods are mainly focused on the static data. Performance requirements are generally met as possible by finding some cases and changing their structures. However, when one is satisfied with the structures changed, the other effects are not taken into account by analyzing the correlations; that is, design conflicts are not identified and resolved. An approach to resolving the conflict problems is proposed based on propagation analysis in Extension Theory. Firstly, the extension distance is improved to better fit evaluating the similarity among cases, then, a case retrieval method is developed. Secondly, the transformations that can be made on selected cases are formulated by understanding the conflict natures in the different performance requirements, which leads to the extension transformation strategy development for coordinating conflicts using propagation analysis. Thirdly, the effects and levels of propagation are determined by analyzing the performance values before and after the transformations, thus the co-existing conflict coordination strategy of multiple performances is developed. The method has been implemented in a working prototype system for supporting decision-making. And it has been demonstrated the feasible and effective through resolving the conflicts of noise, exhaust, weight and intake pressure for the screw air compressor performance design.

Optimal Design of Air Compressor-Driving Quadratic Linear Actuator in Fuel Cell BOP System Using Orthogonal Arrays Matrix

The design of an air compressor-driving quadratic linear actuator in a fuel cell BOP system is studied using orthogonal techniques. The approach utilizes an orthogonal array for design of 'experiments', i.e. the scheme for numerical simulations using a finite element method. Eco-friendly energy is increasingly important due to the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental pollution. Among the new energy sources, fuel cell is spotlighted as renewable energy because it produces few dusts. The air compressor performance is directly related to the efficiency of the fuel cell BOP system has high power consumption. In this paper, an optimized technique using an orthogonal matrix is applied to the design problem to improve the performance of quadratic linear actuator.

Analysis of Internal Clearance of Oil-Free Screw Compressor and Its Application to Performance Simulation.

Clearance between male and female rotors and that between the rotors and casing of an oil-free screw compressor in operation are calculated. Surface displacement vectors of both rotors due to, for example, thermal deformation, profile errors, and deviation of the center distance, are converted to such that the clearance between the rotors changes assuming that the rotor surface is approximated by a plane in the vicinity of the calculating point and that the normal line of the plane does not change direction before or after the displacements. The calculation is applied to a computer simulation for predicting air compressor performance. Change in volumetric efficiency related to suction air temperature was calculated and the results agreed well with experimental ones.
