The Pharmaceutical manufacturing sector today facing strong /Aggressive competition which creates numerous and considerable challenges, hence the Pharmaceutical sector’s needs or focus on “Millennials performance” to continuous improvements. The importance of effectiveness and efficiency on “Millennials performance” in work place, for this purpose this study was directed to rising issue of performance among the Millennials that have different importance and opinion towards their job. The primary objectives of the study are to identify the Factors Affecting “Millennial Performance” in pharmaceutical manufacturing sector. This study is of descriptive research types both primary and secondary data was collected for the study. The primary data was collected using Questionnaire. Pharmaceutical manufacturing sector “Millennials employees” at Hyderabad city was taken as a sampling unit. Convenience sampling technique was used in selecting a sample for the study. The sample size consists of 30 working millennial professionals in pharmaceutical manufacturing sector. Appropriate statistical tools were used for analysis. The findings suggest that the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Sector to adopt better “Employee Engagement system” to motivate & retain the employees and towards helping the organization on achieving the goal in millennials workplace.

Infrastructure Development, Capacity Utilization and Manufacturing Value Added in Nigeria

One of the greatest challenges being grappled with by most developing countries is to boost manufacturing sector performance. In achieving this however, emphasis has been laid on the role of infrastructural development coupled with utilization of capacity in the manufacturing sector. Previous studies have focused on the effect of infrastructure on manufacturing productivity. This study differs from the rest by examining the impact of infrastructure development and capacity utilization on manufacturing value added, using Nigeria data from 1980-2019. Our framework of analysis employed electricity, average capacity utilization, government capital expenditure and manufacturing value added annual percentage growth as variables of analytical relevance. Finding indicates that electricity had negative and insignificant effect on manufacturing value added while manufacturing capacity utilization and capital expenditure had positive and significant effect on manufacturing value added. The result reiterates that capital expenditure on social and economic infrastructure has the capacity to improve manufacturing value added.

The Emergence of Manufacturing Industry in Nigeria (1955-1978)

In this study, the origins and development of the manufacturing sector in Nigeria is surveyed. The article has demonstrated that international capital initiated, and subsequently sustained the drive towards industrialisation in Nigeria. The state and local capital have also played an increasingly important role in the process. This study is also concerned with an analysis of relative share of the manufacturing sector in GDP in the Nigerian manufacturing sector. Its purpose is to clarify the underlying forces behind Nigerian industrialisation, the percentage distribution of some key industries of performance of the manufacturing sector among its sectors. This article further discussed the emergence of Nigerian industrialisation process. It shows that the manufacturing industry effectively started from about 1955, with multinational firms, formerly engaged in wholesale and retail trade, moving into manufacturing. The structure of the manufacturing industry thereafter showed the predominance of light consumer goods production. The capital goods sector, though quite small, expanded somewhat. The primary driving force for Nigerian industrialisation was international capital. The purpose for investment in the Nigerian manufacturing industry by international capital was to utilise the country’s human and material resources to produce for profit. This was especially important because of the decline in the rate of profitability, a rise in wage rates, and the increasing excess liquidity in the developed capitalist countries. Another reason for investments was market protection. The main force behind the Nigerian industrialisation drive was the government and the demands of indigenous Nigerian businessmen as well as international capital that provided the motive force. The various strands of these arguments have been studied, using data on the historical evolution of Nigerian industrial development so as to pinpoint its source. The overall importance of this issue would be to impute the motives, and, subsequently, to explain the structure of Nigerian industrialisation and the consequences of this structure on the development of the Nigerian economy. The manufacturing sector is the driving strength behind socio-economic development of all societies the world over.

Energy Consumption and Performance of Sectoral Outputs: Results from an Energy-Impoverished Economy

This paper is directed at exploring the relationship among energy consumption, disaggregated sectoral output (GDP) and economic growth in Nigeria using time series data. The study applied a plethora of estimation techniques (multivariate unit root, Johansen cointegration and Granger causality tests). The study found that energy consumption has enhanced the performance of agriculture, health, manufacturing, utilities, finance and transport sectors in Nigeria during the period under consideration. Long-run energy consumption was found to be detrimental to the performance of administration output (GDP). The study recommends that energy consumption should be encouraged essentially for sectoral and industrial purposes (the production of intermediate goods and services) and not only for household consumption.

Profitability or Industrial Relations: What Explains Manufacturing Performance across Indian States?

ABSTRACTThis article begins with a critique of the well‐known claim by Besley and Burgess concerning the negative impact of labour regulation on organized sector manufacturing performance in India. In the second part of the article, the authors use a state‐level panel data set for the period 1969–2005 to analyse the relative importance of profitability (rate of profit as a percentage of the total replacement cost of capital stock) and industrial disputes (man‐days lost to all industrial disputes as a percentage of total workers employed) to explain cross‐state variations of manufacturing performance in India's organized sector. Using three different measures of manufacturing performance — net value added, investment and employment — they find that profitability is more significant than industrial disputes in explaining the variation of manufacturing sector performance across Indian states. The findings presented here therefore question the uncritical acceptance of Besley and Burgess's results in the literature on labour regulation.

Natural resource abundance, institutional quality and manufacturing development: Evidence from resource-rich countries

The past decades provide many examples of the manufacturing sectors of resource-rich countries failing to develop more rapidly than their counterparts in countries lacking such resources. This study evaluates the impacts of natural resource rents and the quality of institutions on performance of tradable and non-tradable sectors in resource-rich countries. It examines data from 2000 to 2016 and the panel data model from 28 countries rich in natural resources and having different levels of institutional quality. The dependent variable is services etc. value added to manufacturing value added ratio. Model estimation results show that in the case of natural resource-dependent economies, this ratio increases unless there is a high level of institutional quality. Various panel regression estimations confirm that, the efficient institutional structure in natural resource-based countries, through alleviating the effects of the natural resource curse phenomenon, improves the manufacturing sector's performance in these economies. The paper concludes with a clear message to policy makers on the contributions of institutions in economic performance. It is apparent that enhancements in institutional quality allow for more effective utilization of a country's rich natural resources in strengthening the manufacturing sector to achieve higher economic growth and to mitigate the effects of the natural resource curse.

The impact of soft TQM on financial performance

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of soft total quality management (TQM) on organizational performance in the Jordanian pharmaceutical manufacturing sector using the balanced scorecard (BSC) perspective. It also examines the indirect effect of soft TQM on financial performance through BSC non-financial perspectives.Design/methodology/approachThe study is based on survey data collected from 197 employees in managerial and non-managerial positions working in Jordanian pharmaceutical manufacturing companies. Validity and reliability analyses were performed, and the study hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling.FindingsThe results indicated that soft TQM positively affected all BSC perspectives. Customer perspective positively affected financial performance while innovation and learning perspective and internal business process perspective did not. In addition, only customer perspective significantly mediated the relationship between soft TQM and financial performance.Originality/valueThis is one of the first papers to examine the effect of soft TQM on organizational performance in terms of BSC perspective in the pharmaceutical sector. In addition, this paper is the first to examine the mediating effects of the BSC non-financial perspectives on the relationship between soft TQM and financial performance.

Financial sector and manufacturing sector performance: evidence from Nigeria

Nigerian economy depends on oil as the major source of revenue, failure to diversify the revenue base has raised questions about its sustainability and implication on the economy. This study uses market capitalization, broad money stock, credit to private sector, prime interest rate and deposit liability as proxies for the financial sector, while output in the manufacturing sector and manufacturing employment are used as proxies for manufacturing performance. The study examines the causal effects, shock effect and long-run impact using Granger Non-Causality, Vector Error Correction Model, and Dynamic Ordinary Least Square method, respectively. The results showed unidirectional causality, confirming the hypothesis of the ‘supply-leading view’ and ‘demand-following view’ except for market capitalization and output in the manufacturing sector, where independence was observed. The variance decomposition shows that the forecast error shock of credit to private sector and prime interest rate show more variations in manufacturing sector performance than other financial indicators. The long-run result using output in manufacturing sector as dependent variable shows a positive significant relationship with other financial sector indicators, except for broad money stock and deposit liability. This study recommended credit channel for transmission of monetary policy using interest rate to improve the performance of manufacturing sector, among others.

Financial Deepening and the Performance of Manufacturing Firms in Nigeria

This study investigated the effect of financial deepening on the performance of manufacturing firms in Nigeria from 1970 to 2016. The data were sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin and the National Bureau of Statistics. The model was specified, and the hypotheses were tested with the Autoregressive Distributed Lag model and Mann-Whitney U Test test. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller, Phillips-Perron and Breusch-Pagan-Godfrey tests were carried out to ensure robust regression results. Results obtained from the study revealed that broad money supply has direct and significant impact on index of manufacturing production (p-value= 0.0039) in Nigeria, credit to private sector has indirect and insignificant impact on index of manufacturing production (p-value= 0.1167) in Nigeria and market capitalization has an indirect and significant impact on index of manufacturing production (p-value= 0.0051) in the long-run and a direct and insignificant impact (p-value= 0.1596) in the short-run. The study also discovered that financial deepening impacted more on the manufacturing sector performance in the post-financial reforms period. The study therefore recommended that government should launch new financial reforms capable of enhancing the accessibility of manufacturing sector to credit and ensure adequate implementation and monitoring of the existing policies on financial reforms in Nigeria with a view to deepening the Nigerian financial system and thereby promoting manufacturing firms’ performance in Nigeria.

Stylised Facts on Drivers and Constraints in Zimbabwe's Manufacturing Sector Performance

This study aim at identifying major constraints and drivers affecting performance in the manufacturing sector in Zimbabwe. Using comparative literature from the region, the study managed to explicitly show that despite dollarization of Zimbabwe's economy, the sector continues to show poor indicators of the manufacturing sector. Stylised facts of manufacturing sector share in GDP, volume of manufacturing index, manufacturing sector share in total productive sector value added and manufacturing sector employees and total earnings were poor in a post dollarized Zimbabwe. Low local demand, competition, fnance and infrastructure are major constraints in the manufacturing sector in Zimbabwe. Policy stability, zero corruption tolerance, FDI, reliable power and retooling can drive the manufacturing sector. In conclusion, the government should provide an enabling economic environment sustainable to salvage the struggling manufacturing sector in Zimbabwe.

The study aimed to analyse financial performance of Turkish Manufacturing Sector. 32 financial ratios of the 21 manufacturing sub-sectors were analysed by Gray Relational Analysis method. Data used in the analysis are the sector ratios calculated and declared by the Central Bank of The Republic of Turkey (CBRT) and cover the period 2012-2014. According to the findings the indicators affecting financial performance of Turkish manufacturing sector are financial structure, profitability, liquidity and asset utilization ratios. Within the scope of study the most successful three subsectors are, Tobacco Products Manufacturing, Coke and Refined Petroleum Products Manufacturing and Beverages Manufacturing sub-ectors. Food Products Manufacturing sub-sector is identified as the lowest performance.

MEASURING THE EFFICIENCY OF INDUSTRIES BY FUZZY DATA ENVELOPMENT ANALYSIS

Manufacturing is a part of the income of any country, helping to grow the economy by generating productivity, stimulating research and development, and investing in the future. Therefore, this paper seeks to explain the productivity growth performance of Ethiopian's manufacturing sector using a dataset of 14 types of industries for the year of 2008; utilizing data envelopment analysis (DEA) techniques either traditional or fuzzy DEA models. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a methodology for measuring the relative efficiencies of a set of decision making units (DMUs) that use multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. Conventional DEA models assume that input and output values should be certain (crisp data). However, the observed values of the input and output data in real-world situations are sometimes vague or imprecise. In this paper, three approaches that transform the original data (crisp data) into interval data, in the form of upper and lower frontier data, are suggested. Then, by using these upper and lower frontier data; the intervalDEA efficiency scores can be achieved. These approaches are applied on the real-life data and the results show that data envelopment analysis (DEA) techniques are suitable to evaluate and compare the performances of industries that enable the decision makers to analyze the situation better.

Exchange Rate Variability and Manufacturing Sector Performance in Ghana: Evidence from Cointegration Analysis

<p>This study examined the effect of exchange rate variability on manufacturing sector performance in Ghana. Using time series data from the period 1986-2013 and employing the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach, the empirical results show that there exists both a short as well as long run relationship between exchange rate and manufacturing sector performance. Thus, in Ghana as the exchange rate appreciates, the manufacturing sector performance improves and as it depreciates, the sector is adversely affected. In view of this, it is recommended that policy should be put in place to regulate the importation of goods that could be locally produced so as to improve the performance of the manufacturing sector. In addition, the government should ensure that there is regular electricity supply, good roads, water and a reliable telecommunication system so that the manufacturing sector can perform effectively and efficiently in order to achieve a considerable rate of economic growth.</p>

Does Services Liberalization Benefit Manufacturing Firms? Evidence from the Czech Republic

While there is considerable empirical evidence on the impact of liberalizing trade in goods, the effects of services liberalization have not been empirically established. Using firm-level data from the Czech Republic for the period 1998-2003, this study examines the link between services sector reforms and the productivity of domestic firms in downstream manufacturing. Several aspects of services reform are considered and measured, namely, the increased presence of foreign providers, privatization, and enhanced competition. The manufacturing-services linkage is measured using information on the degree to which manufacturing firms in a particular industry rely on intermediate inputs from specific services sectors. The econometric results lead to two conclusions. First, the study finds that services policy matters for the productivity of manufacturing firms relying on services inputs. This finding is robust to several econometric specifications, including controlling for unobservable firm heterogeneity and for other aspects of openness. Second, it finds evidence that opening services sectors to foreign providers is a key channel through which services liberalization contributes to improved performance of downstream manufacturing sectors. This finding is robust to instrumenting for the extent of foreign presence in services industries. As most barriers to foreign investment today are not in goods but in services sectors, the findings may strengthen the argument for reform in this area.

Perfil industrial de Minas Gerais e a hipótese de desindustrialização estadual

Este artigo analisa o perfil industrial de Minas Gerais nos anos 2000, com o objetivo de avaliar o desempenho da indústria de transformação no estado conforme a hipótese de desindustrialização. Verifica-se que a indústria de transformação perdeu peso relativo no produto estadual e apresentou deterioração em seu conteúdo tecnológico, ao passo que houve avanço da participação da indústria extrativa, na qual o estado possui vantagens comparativas. A análise de cointegração e a estimação de Modelos de Vetores de Correção de Erros sugerem algum indício de desindustrialização em Minas Gerais, manifesto na importância de uma taxa de câmbio real depreciada para estimular a produção industrial de transformação do estado no longo prazo.

Carbon emissions reductions and technology gaps in the world's factory, 1990–2012

China's manufacturing industries are traditionally energy-intensive sectors and are responsible for over half of the country's total CO2 emissions. In this paper, we propose a global meta-frontier non-radial directional distance function approach to measure the CO2 emissions performance of Chinese manufacturing sectors during the period of 1990–2012. This approach allows us to simultaneously consider technological heterogeneity in manufacturing, non-radial slacks, and undesirable outputs. The global level of environmental technology is incorporated into the efficiency model to improve discriminating power and comparability. The results indicate significant differences in CO2-emissions-reduction performance among five broad groups of Chinese manufacturing industries. The “global technologies/ innovators group” is the most efficient under meta-frontier technologies, with the smallest technology gap. Meanwhile, the “energy-/resource-intensive commodities group” is, on average, the least efficient. Therefore, the Chinese government should implement targeted policies that encourage firms in the global technologies/innovators group to increase market share while supporting those in the energy-/resource-intensive commodities group to upgrade their technologies.
