Assessment of Health and Safety Performance in Construction Industry

The management of health and safety is crucial for anyone working in Construction industry. The Indian economy has suffered both financial and human losses as a result of poor health and safety management in the building industry. This study’s main goal is to analyse the health and safety management in the construction industry and identify the variables that influence it. A questionnaire was created for the survey while taking into account the past research for this topic. Collected and analysed survey data to identify the main elements influencing safety and health. This study offers a number of suggestions and tactics to enhance workers and employees health and safety management.

Construction industry is a labor-intensive sector that absorbs a large number of workers. Therefore, the industry must be able to pay attention to human resources which are a valuable asset. One of them is related to the mental health of construction workers. Even though the construction industry is known for its stressful environment, not much research has been conducted regarding the fulfillment of mental health aspects of construction workers, especially in Indonesia. In fact, various mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety can have an impact on the performance of construction workers and industry. This research aims to identify various factors related to mental health that influence construction workers through an integrative literature study. The results of the analysis succeeded in finding 68 factors related to mental health in the construction industry which were grouped into four domains, namely types, causes, impacts and solutions to overcome mental health disorders in the construction industry. Identification of these factors and domains is important as a means of understanding mental health aspects so that they can become a reference for stakeholders, especially the government and construction project organizations, in an effort to increase awareness on the importance of mental health in the construction work environment. In this way, the government and construction project organizations can be proactively involved in realizing the achievement of sustainable development goals, namely good health and well-being.

An ICT-based Framework for Innovative Integration between BIM and Lean Practices Obtaining Smart Sustainable Cities

Smart sustainable cities rely on the latest technologies and apply recent knowledge like Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), BIM, and lean construction to expand people's eminence of life, smooth urban maneuvers and facilities more competent, and develop their competitiveness while confirming that they achieve the economic, social, environmental, and cultural demands of current and forthcoming generations. This paper explores the synergies between Building Information Modelling (BIM) visualisation and Lean construction practices to enhance Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry performance. A structured questionnaire was distributed among BIM and lean experts and analysed by SPSS. The study uses descriptive and correlation analyses to assess ten key lean practices, revealing high industry adoption and favorable mean scores. Notably, BIM-enhanced clash detection and coordination lead with a score of 4.4 out of 5. Correlation analysis establishes significant positive associations between BIM visualisation and practices such as just-in-time production, value stream mapping, lean pull systems, work sequencing, standardised work, and continuous improvement. The findings accentuate the pivotal role of BIM in optimising lean practices, offering valuable insights for practitioners seeking to elevate AEC industry performance through strategic integration. Future studies endeavors are recommended to investigate several alternative avenues to enhance the integration between BIM and Lean practices in the AEC industry. Furthermore, the forthcoming researchers are advised to validate the proposed framework.

Enhancing Project Management through Exploratory Factor Analysis of Safety Performance in Dubai's Construction Industry

The construction industry in Dubai, known for its rapid growth and towering skyscrapers, has faced significant challenges ensuring the safety of its workforce. The purpose of this study was to enhance project management practices through an exploratory factor analysis of safety performance within this sector. This research aimed to identify the underlying factors that contribute to safety outcomes and to provide a data-driven foundation for improving safety measures. Addressing the problem of frequent construction accidents and the high rate of safety incidents, this study hypothesized that a multifaceted approach to safety analysis would reveal complex interdependencies affecting worker safety. The methodology involved a comprehensive review of incident reports and safety records from various construction projects in Dubai over the past five years, coupled with surveys and interviews with industry professionals. The data underwent exploratory factor analysis to ascertain the primary variables impacting safety performance. Findings indicated that key factors affecting safety included worker training, communication efficacy, adherence to safety protocols, and the use of protective equipment. Surprisingly, statistical analysis revealed that projects with high safety investments did not always correlate with lower incident rates, suggesting the importance of qualitative factors over mere financial commitment. The study concludes that enhancing safety performance in Dubai’s construction industry requires a holistic approach that goes beyond financial investment in safety. Recommendations include implementing regular, targeted training programs, improving on-site communication channels, strict enforcement of safety protocols, and fostering a safety-centric organizational culture. In light of these conclusions, the study advocates for policy revisions at the regulatory level and a shift in the industry’s safety paradigm. The recommended strategic changes aim to not only mitigate the risks inherent in the construction industry but also to enhance the overall management of construction projects in the dynamic landscape of Dubai. Project Management Practices and Performance of Construction Projects: A Case of Kigali Golf club and Kigali Arena Stadium Projects under Supervision of Rwanda Housing Authority

This research examined project management practices and performance in Rwanda's construction industry, with a focus on the Kigali Golf Club and Kigali ARENA projects. It assessed the impact of monitoring and evaluation practices, project risk management, and project leadership skills on performance. The study employs a mixed-method approach, collecting data from 166 respondents across various departments using questionnaires and interviews. The findings emphasize the significance of project monitoring and evaluation (mean score of 4.63), project risk management (mean score of 4.415), and project leadership skills (mean score of 4.63) in contributing to construction project performance. Overall, effective project management practices, including monitoring, evaluation, risk management, and leadership skills, are crucial for success in Rwanda's construction industry. Local government institutions in Ghana: Core partners in health and safety performance in the construction industry

The potential contribution of district assemblies to improving health and safety in Ghana's construction industry has not been investigated. This paper attempts to identify the local government responsibilities that could influence health and safety performance in the construction industry and to develop a confirmatory factor model based on these responsibilities. The paper adopted a positivist philosophy and a deductive methodology. A literature search was conducted to identify the local government factors that could potentially impact health and safety performance in the Ghanaian construction industry. These factors were adapted and designed into a questionnaire, and the generated questionnaires were distributed to respondents for their feedback. It was identified using the relative importance index that “the development of sanctions for violating occupational health and safety statutory obligations,” “the institution of local government occupational health and safety approval and certification for new projects,” and “the creation of occupational health and safety departments and committees that are adequately resourced to assist the Department of Factories Inspectorate” were the three most important roles that district assemblies could play as partners to improve health and safety in the construction industry. Conversely, the multivariate analysis identified the evaluation of the safety policies and risk management plans of contractors and suppliers as the most important role local government institutions could play in improving health and safety in the construction industry. The result of the study suggests that local government efforts, when given the needed attention and support, could advance health and safety in the industry. The practical implication of the study is that it identifies the roles of district assemblies that could enhance health and safety in Ghana's construction industry. All district assemblies should consider implementing these health and safety initiatives in their districts and ensuring they are regularly enforced and evaluated.

Further Analysis on Risk Management and Solutions to Improve Productivity and Safety in Construction Sector - and Environment Protection Law in Construction Activities

The improvement of construction and facilities management processes aims to increase efficiency, save costs and reduce environmental damages. This industry currently experiences injuries, death and diseases. The purpose of this study is to present FURTHER ANALYSIS ON RISK MANAGEMENT and SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY AND SAFETY IN CONSTRUCTION SECTOR. Methodology: Authors use statistics, qualitative analysis including synthesis and inductive methods in this paper. Findings: we need to propose both risk reduction and risk prevention strategies as well as build various risk models. Originality values: Therefore It means that we need to reduce those risks to serve for development of projects in a safety concept. Last but not least, selecting qualified human resources and preparing good financial budget for each projects is among vital factors to improve productivity of these projects. The research boosts this vital sector – construction industry, raising productivity and enhancing construction performance through increasing efficiency deriving from the use of immersive technologies.

Assessments of the Application of Earned Value Management System for Construction Project Performance Measurement in Zanzibar

Many construction projects in developing countries including in Zanzibar suffer from time and budget overruns. The Revolution Government of Zanzibar established different bodies such as Zanzibar Contractors Registration Board (ZCRB), Zanzibar Architects, Engineers and Quantity Surveyors Registration Board (ZAEQRB), Zanzibar Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Asset Authority (ZPPDA), among others with the aim of controlling the performance of project. Often scope creep, time and cost overruns are very common problems in construction projects. This study aims at addressing those problems by assessing the use of Earned Value Management (EVM) methodology in measuring construction industry performance in Zanzibar. The study used purposive sampling to select the sample. A self-administered questionnaire and round table discussions were deployed to architects, engineers, project managers, and quantity surveyors for data collection. Also, a case study design was employed whereby four ongoing construction projects were used as samples to collect data. The data were processed using Microsoft Excel where Chi- square, ANOVA, and Earned Value Analysis (EVA) were used to analyze the data. The study findings indicate that majority of key players of construction industry of Zanzibar were unaware of the EVA as a tool for monitoring the performance of the projects, although they practice EVMS to some extent. Also, all four cases used in this study, indicated underperformances in terms of scope, time and cost parameters.

Lean and BIM integration benefits construction management practices in New Zealand

PurposeThe construction industry is inefficient in terms of quality products, productivity and performance worldwide, including in Australia and New Zealand. The construction industry is becoming more innovative, competitive and complex; and more participants are involved in construction projects. There are new attempts to implement the Lean construction philosophy, integrated project delivery method and building information modelling (BIM) technology in construction industry to improve productivity and efficiency. This paper aims to identify Lean and BIM integration benefits in construction industry globally and in the New Zealand.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review and case studies were used to identify various benefits of the integrating Lean and BIM in construction industry. It focused on articles published between 1995 and 2021.FindingsLean and BIM benefits identified in the study were documented such as benefits over the traditional approach, critically increased efficiency and visualization, better building process, better building performance, mitigating risk and reduce cost. Also, several factors were identified as major benefits such as improved onsite collaboration, better coordination, improve onsite communication, increase productivity, mitigating risk, reducing waste and reduced cost. The study showed integrating Lean and BIM in construction management practice will help reduce several challenges which affect expected goals and customer anticipation. The research outcome ultimately will assist different stakeholders in applying Lean and BIM in construction management practice.Originality/valueThis study practically focused on using the integration of BIM and Lean principles to improve the construction industry productivity and performance.

Impact of asymmetric trust on construction project management performance: the mediating role of knowledge sharing

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to explore the impact of asymmetric trust on construction project management performance in China's construction industry. Moreover, the authors explore the mediating role of two types of knowledge sharing (explicit knowledge sharing and tacit knowledge sharing) in explaining the association between asymmetric trust and project management performance.Design/methodology/approachA theoretical model based on the research hypotheses proposed in this study was developed and a questionnaire survey was conducted with 271 professionals. The data collected was analyzed by the structural equation modeling (SEM) technique.FindingsThe results of this study indicate that there is a significant and negative association between asymmetric trust and project management performance. Moreover, two types of knowledge sharing (explicit knowledge sharing and tacit knowledge sharing) have different degrees of impact on improving project management performance. In addition, tacit knowledge sharing is a mediator between asymmetric trust and project management performance.Research limitations/implicationsThe data used in this study is from Chinese scenarios, so the research conclusions and application effects based on this are bound to have certain regional limitations. Besides, there are many factors that affect project management performance improving, and the relationships among them are so complex. The theoretical model proposed in this study may not be fully considered. Therefore, follow-up researchers can consider bringing more suitable variables into their researches, so that the theoretical researches can be more in line with the actual project management practice, and the specific mechanism for improving project management performance can be explained more deeply.Originality/valueThis research's value is as follows: Firstly, this paper contributes to the trust and relational governance literature by expanding the research perspective of mutual trust to asymmetric trust. Specially, this research designs a measurement scale for asymmetric trust and then reveals the impact mechanism of it on project management performance, which will certainly promote research paradigm change of trust. Secondly, this research is beneficial to knowledge sharing literature in the construction management field by expanding the research scope of knowledge sharing from a cross-organizational perspective.

Current and Future Trends of Construction Project Performance Models: A Review

The construction industry (CI) has experienced outstanding growth and contributed to economic growth for many countries, with enormous foreign investments that require quality projects. High pressure to reduce the construction cost and time commonly put the industry at risk of lower quality and safety of the construction facilities. Like many other developing countries, Tanzania needs more stringent quality control measures in the construction sector to contribute positively to sustainable growth. This study thus reviews current and future trends in construction industry performance in Tanzania. The literature review on construction projects (CPs) performance is based on information on time overruns from contractors, clients, and consultants of the Tanzanian CIs. Initially, 300 literatures were reviewed and manually screened to about 50 literatures. Results showed that 56% of the 50 reviewed literatures indicate the need to reduce the time overruns in CPs. Further, it was noted that more responsibility in addressing time and cost overrun challenges in the CPs lies on clients, consultants, and contractors. Moreover, planning scheduling factors (PSF) is noted to be the most noteworthy category of factors that greatly influence project performance. In contrast, records and documentation factors (RDF) scored as the second most significant factor in performance in terms of cost overruns. The study, therefore, concludes that contractors, clients, and consultants should have an adequate cash flow plan, properly manage financial resources, advance site management through experts, and institute appropriate planning and scheduling. Thus, these research findings propose factors that lead to time overrun, thus portraying the establishment of robust systems to eliminate time overrun causes.

Construction Health and Safety Agent Collaboration and Its Influence on Health and Safety Performance in the South African Construction Industry

Fatalities, injuries, and illnesses continue to occur in the construction industry (CI), despite efforts made by clients, designers, and contractors. The lack of collaboration between these project actors and construction health and safety agents (CHSA) remains a challenge for both construction professionals and academics. Given the urgent need for CHSA to collaborate with other construction project members, this study proposes a model for improving CHSA collaboration and its influence on health and safety (H&S) performance. The exploratory sequential mixed method, which included a Delphi study and a questionnaire survey, was adopted. H&S experts were purposively sampled. A three-round Delphi study was conducted to identify the factors, and these factors were categorized into 9 main factors developed from a review of the literature and the input of 15 H&S experts, 14 of whom completed all 3 iterations. Stratified sampling was used to gather quantitative data. A total of 257 questionnaires were returned, of which 213 responses were usable for analysis. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26 was conducted and resulted in 6 main factors. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to establish the validity and reliability of constructs, and finally, path analysis in EQS version 6.4 was used to analyze the results of the questionnaire survey and evaluate the goodness of model fit. The findings were that mutuality, trust, institutional support, project context, and common purpose contribute to CHSA collaboration. Additionally, the influence of project context, common purpose, and CHSA collaboration on H&S performance were found to be statistically significant. The study’s implication is that in order to improve H&S performance, clients, designers, and contractors may not limit the participation of CHSA on the project. The implication for the CI is that by promoting CHSA collaboration, the likelihood of CHSA influence could increase and H&S performance could improve on construction projects. The study revealed that collaboration should be considered for improving H&S performance. The study is limited to respondents who met the selection criteria to participate in the Delphi study and questionnaire survey. Any registered persons who did not receive regular communication and announcements would have not participated. Despite the requirements of the South Africa Construction Regulations 2014 that CHSA should be part of the construction project team, more studies should be conducted to investigate the CHSA level of involvement on the project.

Impact of Talent Management on Employee Performance in Construction Industry of Eastern Nepal

The construction industry requires competent and skilled talent to achieve set milestones. Talent management is a human resource strategy designed to attract, develop, and retain manpower. This study aims to explore the impact of talent management on employee performance in the construction industry. The three factors of talent management strategies taken into consideration for this study are training and development, talent retention strategies, and performance management systems. A simple random sampling technique was used to distribute questionnaires to working professionals in Province 1. Linear regression analysis was used to find the correlation between talent management strategies and employee performance. The findings revealed that talent retention strategies and performance management systems significantly affect employee performance in the construction industry, while training and development moderately affect employee performance. The dependent variables were correlated with R2 values of 0.816, 0.793, and 0.549 for talent retention strategies, performance management systems, and training and development, respectively. All independent variables were correlated with an R2 value of 0.896. Succession planning, career development, management feedback, and employee appraisal were identified as key factors in achieving standard quality output in the construction industry. This study highlights the importance of talent management strategies in enhancing employee performance in the construction industry. The findings suggest that organizations should focus on talent retention strategies and performance management systems to improve employee performance. These methods help us understand the most important factors for success and subsequently affect project results. The RII designates a number for each factor to display its importance. These values allow stakeholders to gauge the impact of different aspects on project success, guiding resource allocation and decision-making. Ranking these factors adds an additional layer of clarity, enabling stakeholders to discern priorities and allocate efforts judiciously. Analyzing insights derived from individual questions provides a nuanced perspective on specific aspects. For instance, clear roles and responsibilities (RII: 0.748) emerge as a foundational factor, emphasizing the importance of organizational clarity. Effective communication (RII: 0.655) surfaces as a significant challenge, highlighting the need for streamlined information dissemination. Drawing from these analyses, actionable recommendations arise. Improving communication channels, enhancing planning processes, investing in skill development, and adopting technology are among the proposed strategies. In the context of the construction industry, the findings resonate profoundly and offer a blueprint for stakeholders to optimize project management processes, driving success in an industry notorious for its intricacies. By embracing data-driven insights, stakeholders can navigate the complexities of construction projects with informed decisions and strategic actions.

Effects of Applying BIM on Facility Management for Existing Buildings

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is increasingly being used construction projects, and it demonstrates its ability to improve the construction industry's performance, However, its application in facility management still moderate and has not yet reached the potential and expected full use. The most common problem facing facility managers is the ability to access and manage the information. Information is the key to operate existing buildings and most importantly is the ability to collect, analyze, and handle it in an appropriate manner to be used for the facility management phase and the entire building life. However, there is insufficient understanding of the correct standards, processes and policies to be followed in the submission and management of such data, a significant lack of professionals and lack of knowledge of their software. This study aims to explore the value of BIM and the challenges affecting its application in FM, as well as address the information required for effective facilities management in existing buildings and the challenges to maintain a continuous update of BIM information in FM. The research methodology is based on analytical method: Using a questionnaire to a sample of staff and engineers in facilities management to detect the effects of applying BIM to facility management. The research demonstrated the importance of creating a BIM model for existing buildings and its effects to improve operations and maintenance, the need to increase BIM practices in engineering organizations. and indicated the most important benefits of the BIM for facility management application as: increase the efficiency of operation and maintenance staff's access to data, improve future operation design and preventive maintenance, facilitate decision-making throughout the operation and maintenance phase, and finally reduce costs and time while increase the quality of procedures.
