Educators who are responsible for training individuals in the health sciences field must develop new kinds of instructional programs that will prepare students for the job responsibilities expected of them. Competency performancebased instruction is one of the most fruitful methods for providing for this type of training. An effective and efficient systematic competency-based procedure is described, which was devised and implemented in developing a clinical laboratory practicum course of instruction at Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, Michigan.
