Enhanced Underwater Single Vector-Acoustic DOA Estimation via Linear Matched Stochastic Resonance Preprocessing

Underwater acoustic vector sensors (UAVSs) are increasingly utilized for remote passive sonar detection, but the accuracy of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation remains a challenging problem, particularly under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions and complex background noise. In this paper, a comprehensive theoretical analysis is conducted on UAVS signal preprocessing subjected to gain-phase uncertainties for average acoustic intensity measurement (AAIM) and complex acoustic intensity measurement (CAIM)-based vector DOA estimation, aiming to explain the theoretical restrictions of intensity-based vector acoustic preprocessing approaches. On this basis, a generalized vector acoustic preprocessing optimization model is established in which the principle can be described as “maximizing the denoising performance under the constraints of an equivalent amplitude-gain response and phase-bias response”. A novel vector acoustic preprocessing method named linear matched stochastic resonance (LMSR) is proposed within the framework of matched stochastic resonance theory, which can naturally guarantee the linear gain-phase restrictions, as well achieving effective denoising performance. Numerical analyses demonstrate the superior vector DOA estimation performance of our proposed LMSR-AAIM and LMSR-CAIM methods in comparison to classical intensity-based AAIM and CAIM methods, especially under low-SNR conditions and non-Gaussian impulsive noise circumstances. Experimental verification conducted in the South China Sea further verifies its the effectiveness for practical application. This work can lay a solid foundation to break through the challenges of underwater remote vector acoustic DOA estimation under low-SNR conditions and complex ocean ambient noise and can provide important guidance for future research work.

Motion-guided large aperture ULA to enhance DOA estimation: An inverse synthetic aperture perspective

Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation is a critical issue in array signal processing, especially in radar applications. However, the array aperture of high-frequency radars is constrained by the site and platform, which in turn leads to limited DOA estimation performance. In this paper, inspired by the inverse synthetic aperture radar, we design a novel DOA estimation method based on motion-guided large-aperture uniform linear array (ULA). Referring to the concept of inverse synthetic aperture, the novel method utilizes the relative motion between the radar and the target to construct a larger ULA. We demonstrate that the key condition for reconstructing ULAs is suitable data segmentation and reshaping within the coherent integration time. However, the correct segmentation position is related to the target's motion trajectory. For non-cooperative targets, the uncertain segmentation position is regarded as a mismatch problem between the steering and weighting vectors, such that the spatial spectrum becomes a product of two sinc-like functions. With the analysis of the main lobe and grating lobes, the maximum peak-to-grating-lobe ratio criterion is introduced to find the ambiguity-free DOA. The experimental results demonstrate the performance advantages of the proposed DOA estimation algorithm in terms of noise robustness and resolution.

Improved multiple-Toeplitz matrices reconstruction method using quadratic spatial smoothing for coherent signals DOA estimation

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to exploit the multiple-Toeplitz matrices reconstruction method combined with quadratic spatial smoothing processing to improve the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation performance of coherent signals at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNRs).Design/methodology/approachAn improved multiple-Toeplitz matrices reconstruction method is proposed via quadratic spatial smoothing processing. Our proposed method takes advantage of the available information contained in the auto-covariance matrices of individual Toeplitz matrices and the cross-covariance matrices of different Toeplitz matrices, which results in a higher noise suppression ability.FindingsTheoretical analysis and simulation results show that, compared with the existing Toeplitz matrix processing methods, the proposed method improves the DOA estimation performance in cases with a low SNR. Especially for the cases with a low SNR and small snapshot number as well as with closely spaced sources, the proposed method can achieve much better performance on estimation accuracy and resolution probability.Research limitations/implicationsThe study investigates the possibility of reusing pre-existing designs for the DOA estimation of the coherent signals. The proposed technique enables achieve good estimation performance at low SNRs.Practical implicationsThe paper includes implications for the DOA problem at low SNRs in communication systems.Originality/valueThe proposed method proved to be useful for the DOA estimation at low SNR.

Direction-of-arrival estimation in closely distributed array exploiting mixed-precision covariance matrices

In this paper, we explore a collaborative direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation technique that utilizes multiple closely spaced subarrays to maximize the potential of distributed arrays while minimizing communication overhead between the subarrays and the processing center. Each subarray computes its self-covariance matrix using the full-precision data and transmits it, along with a one-bit version of the measured data, to the processing center. The processing center generates one-bit cross-covariance matrices between subarrays, which are combined with full-precision subarray self-covariance matrices to create the mixed-precision covariance matrix of the entire array for source DOA estimation. This approach utilizes the full array aperture and all available degrees of freedom of the entire distributed array. To address missing entries in the full covariance matrix, we employ matrix completion, taking into account its Toeplitz and Hermitian structure. For subarrays that are not positioned on the half-wavelength grid, we propose an iterative DOA estimation method to ensure robust DOA estimation performance. Our proposed approach outperforms scenarios where cross-covariance matrices are unavailable or the entire covariance matrix is not interpolated. With the same communication traffic limitation, it demonstrates superiority over schemes that utilize only full-precision data or only one-bit data.

A Survey on Beamspace Millimeter-wave Massive Mimo Systems: An Overview of Open Issues, Challenges, and Future Research Trends

Abstract: The channel sparsity is exploited by transforming the channel into an angular domain from the spatial domain at millimeter wave frequencies in Beamspace Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (B-MIMO) systems. Every beam in B-MIMO corresponds to an individual radio frequency (RF) chain, and thus, beam selection techniques can reduce the RF hardware complexity. RF chain limitation is needed for an ideal beamspace precoding scheme to attain good system performance across the entire bandwidth. New methods of beamspace channel estimation with a small amount of estimation error and low computational complexity are challenging in the beam domain due to the larger antenna arrays deployed. A novel beamspace processing technique to improve the direction of arrival estimation performance for different array configurations with improvement in system performance is desired in a 5G system. A detailed review of the B-MIMO system with its architecture and various beam selection techniques is presented in this paper. The scope of the work is elaborated by incorporating various existing beamspace precoding and channel estimation methods. The paper also presents various beamspace processing schemes for parameter estimation with a focus on the direction of arrival estimation performance.

DOA Estimation of Broadband Sources Using Dimension-Reduced Matrix Filter with Deep Nulling in a Strong Interference Environment

To enhance the performance of the adaptive matrix filter with nulling, a dimension-reduced matrix filter with deep nulling (DR-MFDN) is proposed in this paper and used for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation of broadband sources in a strong interference environment. Consider the change of noise after filtering, the gaussian matrix is used for prewhitening to prevent the noise from converting into colored noise without affecting the response characteristics of the beam-space. Finally, the multiple measurement vector orthogonal matching pursuit (MOMP) algorithm is used for DOA estimation of weak targets after filtering, and the simulation results show a better DOA estimation performance compared to the OMP and MUSIC algorithms with short snapshots.

DOA estimation based on sparse Bayesian learning with moving synthetic virtual array

AbstractIn scenarios with constrained physical aperture sizes, aiming to enhance the resolution and accuracy of Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation, this paper proposes a novel approach that integrates a moving synthetic virtual array with Sparse Bayesian Learning (SBL) for DOA estimation. Initially, a virtual array is constructed based on the motion characteristics of the target. Subsequently, the SBL method is employed to estimate the DOA of the target. Simulation experiments validate the effectiveness of this approach, demonstrating comparable DOA estimation performance to synthetic aperture methods with larger aperture sizes, even in situations with limited aperture expansion. Furthermore, under constant virtual aperture expansion, this method surpasses non‐SBL methods regarding DOA resolution.

Direction‐of‐arrival estimation in coprime linear array using three uniform linear arrays considering mutual coupling

AbstractNowadays, sparse arrays have been a focus for direction‐of‐arrival (DOA). The existing arrays can achieve high degree of freedom (DOF) bigger than the number of sensors when using the spatial smoothing methods. However, the small inter‐element spacing degrades the DOA estimation accuracy when facing severe mutual coupling. In order to alleviate mutual coupling, a coprime linear array using three uniform linear arrays (CLA‐U3) is proposed. The expression of sensor locations is given, and the analysis of DOF is considered. The minimum subarray inter‐element spacing in CLA‐U3 is bigger than that of the existing arrays, which means that CLA‐U3 can be less sensitive to mutual coupling. Moreover, the difference co‐subarrays can fill each other's holes, so CLA‐U3 and other sparse arrays composed of three subarrays have close DOF. Simulation experiments prove the favourable performance of DOA estimation.

Neural-Network-Based DOA Estimation in the Presence of Non-Gaussian Interference

This work addresses the problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation in the presence of non-Gaussian, heavy-tailed, and spatially-colored interference. Conventionally, the interference is considered to be Gaussian-distributed and spatially white. However, in practice, this assumption is not guaranteed, which results in degraded DOA estimation performance. Maximum likelihood DOA estimation in the presence of non-Gaussian and spatially colored interference is computationally complex and not practical. Therefore, this work proposes a neural network (NN) based DOA estimation approach for spatial spectrum estimation in multi-source scenarios with <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">a-priori</i> unknown number of sources in the presence of non-Gaussian spatially-colored interference. The proposed approach utilizes a single NN instance for simultaneous source enumeration and DOA estimation. It is shown via simulations that the proposed approach significantly outperforms conventional and NN-based approaches in terms of probability of resolution, estimation accuracy, and source enumeration accuracy in conditions of low SIR, small sample support, and when the angular separation between the source DOAs and the spatially-colored interference is small.

Improving estimation performance of compressive sensing‐based multiple‐input multiple‐output radar using electronic beamsteering

AbstractTwo‐dimensional direction‐of‐arrival (DoA) estimation in azimuth and elevation via radar systems equipped with uniform rectangular arrays (URAs) will play an important role in various application areas—most distinctively in future urban air mobility settings with unmanned aerial vehicles. A key factor is the fast and reliable provision of target detections in terms of range and DoA for safe autonomous operation of the vehicle using on‐board antenna arrays with compact installation size. The authors present a technique for improving the performance of DoA estimation using compressive sensing in conjunction with multiple‐input multiple‐output arrays with electronically steered beams in the transmit direction. The simulation study investigates the impact of different design considerations on radar signal processing performance. An optimisation of a radar system using electronic beamsteering in the transmit domain is presented numerically. Based on the architecture of the URAs used, performance and detection accuracy can be improved.

Multi-target direction-of-arrival estimation of deep models with frame-level permutation invariant training in marine acoustic environment.

Direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation is an important part in sonar signal processing, providing a reliable foundation for tasks, such as underwater object detection and tracking. Although the deep learning model has powerful data fitting capabilities, accurately estimating the orientation of multiple targets with a single model remains a challenging task. To address this challenge, we enhance the permutation invariant training (PIT) technique and propose two different types of methods: multi-group classification with PIT (MC-PIT) and multi-group regression with PIT (MR-PIT). These two frame-level PIT schemes utilize a single model for both training and testing in multi-target scenarios. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of MR-PIT and MC-PIT with different network backbones and demonstrate that the frame-level PIT has excellent portability. Compared with the model trained with the general multi-label strategy, simulation experiments show that our proposed methods have better multi-target DoA estimation performance. Finally, when the array configuration of simulated and recorded data are consistent, the model with frame-level PIT can achieve good performance on recorded data even only trained on simulation data.

Direction-of-Arrival Estimation for a Random Sparse Linear Array Based on a Graph Neural Network.

This article proposes a direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithm for a random sparse linear array based on a novel graph neural network (GNN). Unlike convolutional layers and fully connected layers, which do not interact well with information between different antennas, the GNN model can adapt to the goniometry problem of non-uniform random sparse linear arrays without any prior information by applying neighbor nodes' aggregation and update operations. This helps the model in learning signal features under complex environmental conditions. We train the model in an end-to-end way to reduce the complexity of the network. Experiments are conducted on the uniform and sparse linear arrays for various signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and numbers of snapshots for comparison. We prove that the GNN model has superior angle estimation performance on arrays with large sparsity that cannot be used by traditional algorithms and surpasses existing deep learning models based on convolutional or fully connected structures. The proposed algorithm shows excellent DOA estimation performance under the complex conditions of limited snapshots, low signal-to-noise ratio, and large array sparsity as well. In addition, the algorithm has a low time calculation cost and is suitable for scenarios that require low latency.

Antenna Pattern Calibration Method for Phased Array of High-Frequency Surface Wave Radar Based on First-Order Sea Clutter

The problem of accurate source localization has been an area of focus in high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) applications. However, antenna pattern distortion (APD) decreases the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation performance of the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. Up to now, limited studies have been conducted on the calibration of antenna pattern distortion for phased arrays in HFSWR. In this paper, we first analyze the effect of APD on the performance of the MUSIC algorithm through estimation of accuracy and angular resolution. We demonstrate that using the actual pattern (or say APD) can improve DOA estimation performance. Based on this proposition, we propose a novel iterative calibration method that employs the first-order sea clutter data and can jointly estimate DOA and APD in an iterative way. To obtain available calibration points, we introduce the extraction methods of the first-order sea clutter spectrum and single-DOA spectrum points. Meanwhile, in each iteration, the Beamspace MUSIC algorithm and artificial hummingbird algorithm (AHA) are utilized to estimate the DOA and APD, respectively. Numerical results reveal a good coincidence between the actual pattern and the estimated APD. We also apply this method to process the experimental data of HFSWR. We obtain the APD vector of the real phased array and improve the direction-finding performance of several real ship targets using this vector. Both numerical and experimental results prove the correctness of our proposed calibration method.

Direction of Arrival Estimation with Nested Arrays in Presence of Impulsive Noise: A Correlation Entropy-Based Infinite Norm Strategy

Direction of arrival (DOA) estimation with nested arrays has been widely investigated in the field of array signal processing, but most studies assume that the noise is Gaussian white noise. In practical situations, there may exist impulsive noise (a kind of heavy-tailed noise), wherein the performance of traditional subspace-based DOA estimation algorithms deteriorates significantly. In this paper, we propose a correlation entropy-based infinite norm preprocessing algorithm, which can be applicable to any type of impulsive noise. Each snapshot of the sensor array data is processed by an exponential kernel function with the infinite norm, which can effectively combat the outliers. Furthermore, we construct the equivalent second-order covariance matrix and perform DOA estimation using classical subspace methods. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for both symmetric α-stable distribution and the Gaussian mixture model.

UNet-rootMUSIC: A high accuracy direction of arrival estimation method under array imperfection

In the practical direction-finding systems, the accuracy and resolution of the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation are affected not only by the Gaussian noise and array size but also by hardware configuration imperfections, such as errors in element manufacturing and mounting. These impairments cause phase and amplitude errors in estimating the DOA of signal sources. To address this issue, this paper proposes to combine a U-shape deep neural network (UNet) with the multiple signal classification via the root of the polynomial (rootMUSIC) algorithm (so-called UNet-rootMUSIC) to improve the DOA estimation accuracy. In this approach, the UNet model plays a role in converting a covariance matrix of received signals containing phase and gain errors into a nearly perfect one of the ideal antenna array. The rootMUSIC algorithm is then employed to estimate the signal DOA based on the converted covariance matrix. The DOA estimation performance of the uniform linear array of eight elements with an inter-element distance of λ/2 is analyzed through experimental simulations. The simulation results demonstrate that our method can significantly reduce the root mean square error of DOA estimation compared to the conventional MUSIC, rootMUSIC, ESPRIT methods and two deep neural network-based angular classification methods.

Design of relocating sparse nested arrays for DOA estimation of non-circular signals

Recently, the ability of sparse arrays to achieve higher degrees of freedom (DOFs) and to be less sensitive to the mutual coupling (MC) effect has aroused increasing attention. Aiming at this, we investigate the sparse array design problem for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation of non-circular (NC) signals. Then, we propose two novel relocating sparse nested array (RSNA) structures, named RSNA-I and RSNA-II, respectively, and derive simple explicit expressions for their array locations and DOFs. Specifically, the RSNA-I is composed of two subarrays plus a separate sensor. By utilizing the separate sensor to enable the virtual sum and difference co-array (SDCA) with a longer consecutive segment and to alleviate the MC effect. In addition, to further make the array structure more robust to the MC effect, RSNA-II relocates the dense subarray of RSNA-I. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RSNA-I and RSNA-II achieve a better balance between DOFs and the MC effect, which in turn effectively solves DOA estimation of NC signals and yields better DOA estimation performance.

Direction-of-arrival and power spectral density estimation using a single directional microphone and group-sparse optimization

In this paper, two approaches are proposed for estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) and power spectral density (PSD) of stationary point sources by using a single, rotating, directional microphone. These approaches are based on a method previously presented by the authors, in which point source DOAs were estimated by using a broadband signal model and solving a group-sparse optimization problem, where the number of observations made by the rotating directional microphone can be lower than the number of candidate DOAs in an angular grid. The DOA estimation is followed by the estimation of the sources’ PSDs through the solution of an overdetermined least squares problem. The first approach proposed in this paper includes the use of an additional nonnegativity constraint on the residual noise term when solving the group-sparse optimization problem and is referred to as the Group Lasso Least Squares (GL-LS) approach. The second proposed approach, in addition to the new nonnegativity constraint, employs a narrowband signal model when building the linear system of equations used for formulating the group-sparse optimization problem, where the DOAs and PSDs can be jointly estimated by iterative, group-wise reweighting. This is referred to as the Group-Lasso with l_1-reweighting (GL-L1) approach. Both proposed approaches are implemented using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), and their performance is evaluated through simulations in which different setup conditions are considered, ranging from different types of model mismatch to variations in the acoustic scene and microphone directivity pattern. The results obtained show that in a scenario involving a microphone response mismatch between observed data and the signal model used, having the additional nonnegativity constraint on the residual noise can improve the DOA estimation for the case of GL-LS and the PSD estimation for the case of GL-L1. Moreover, the GL-L1 approach can present an advantage over GL-LS in terms of DOA estimation performance in scenarios with low SNR or where multiple sources are closely located to each other. Finally, it is shown that having the least squares PSD re-estimation step is beneficial in most scenarios, such that GL-LS outperformed GL-L1 in terms of PSD estimation errors.

Assistant vehicle locating based on DOA estimation of deep unfolded network

In view of the decline in the positioning accuracy of the vehicles with small snapshots, this paper proposes a direction of arrival(DOA) estimation method based on deep unfolded network to assist the global positioning system to achieve high-precision locating. Firstly, the signal emitted from the on board unit installed on the vehicle is received by the array antenna of the road side unit(RSU), then RSU transmits the array data to cloud service platform, in which the traditional fixed point continuation algorithm is improved by using l1 norm instead of l2 norm, and the adaptive outlier point tracking algorithm is used to deal with the problem of symbol flipping caused by noise. Then we unfold the improved fixed point continuous algorithm for obtaining a neural network. In order to improve the DOA estimation performance and convergence speed, this paper uses the black widow optimization algorithm to determine the soft threshold shrinkage parameters. According to the mapping between the signal and the array manifold matrix, the DOA of the target is estimated, and its location can be evaluated from the geometry relation between vehicle and RSU. The simulation results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper has better direction finding performance and improves the vehicle positioning accuracy under small snapshots and high signal-to-noise ratio effectively.

Hole‐free sparse array for highly efficient direction of arrival estimation: Enhanced uniform difference co‐array

AbstractSparse arrays with sensors can offer number of degrees of freedom by exploiting the difference co‐array that can be obtained from the second‐order statistics of received signals. In this article, a novel sparse array with seven subarrays (SA‐7S) by carefully assembling the subarrays is proposed, and the resulting SA‐7S can generate a hole‐free uniform difference co‐array. The sensor locations of the SA‐7S array are uniquely determined by a closed‐form expression and the number of achievable degrees of freedom is analytically presented as well. Theoretical analysis shows that the SA‐7S can provide a higher number of degrees of freedom than most sparse linear arrays. Simulations are performed to validate the advantage of the proposed array in terms of uDOFs, mutual coupling and direction of arrival estimation performance.

Low-Rank and Row-Sparse Decomposition for Joint DOA Estimation and Distorted Sensor Detection

Distorted sensors could occur randomly and may lead to the breakdown of a sensor array system. We consider an array model within which a small number of sensors are distorted by unknown sensor gain and phase errors. With such an array model, the problem of joint direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation and distorted sensor detection is formulated under the framework of low-rank and row-sparse decomposition. We derive an iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) algorithm to solve the resulting problem. The convergence property of the IRLS algorithm is analyzed by means of the monotonicity and boundedness of the objective function. Extensive simulations are conducted regarding parameter selection, convergence speed, computational complexity, and performances of DOA estimation as well as distorted sensor detection. Even though the IRLS algorithm is slightly worse than the alternating direction method of multipliers in detecting the distorted sensors, the results show that our approach outperforms several state-of-the-art techniques in terms of convergence speed, computational cost, and DOA estimation performance.
