The study has examined the level of SNS addiction tendency caused by insecure adult attachment (anxiety attachment, avoidance attachment) of college students, and looked into whether insecure adult attachment affects SNS addiction tendency through perfectionistic self-presentation and loneliness. The survey was conducted online for university students across the country and analyzed using SPSS 26 and SPSS PROCESS MACRO. First, the correlation analysis among the variables showed a significant static correlation between anxiety attachment, avoidance attachment, perfectionistic self-presentation, loneliness, and SNS addiction tendency. Second, anxiety attachment has been confirmed to have a significant effect on SNS addiction tendency, whereas perfectionistic self-presentation and single mediating effect and sequential mediating effect of loneliness are not significant. Avoidance attachment showed a statistically significant effect on SNS addiction tendency, but the single mediating effect of perfectionistic self-presentation was shown to be a full mediation, and the single mediating effect of loneliness and sequential mediating effect of perfectionistic self-presentation and loneliness suggested the supression effect of loneliness. Through this study, anxiety attachment and avoidance attachment are different from previous studies in that they confirmed that the paths to SNS addiction tendencies are different.

Perfectionistic self-presentation, coping, and affective response during laboratory performance

ABSTRACT Background and Objectives The impact of trait perfectionism on coping and affective response has been well-documented in laboratory performances, and yet little is known about the role played by perfectionistic self-presentation in performances beyond the effects of trait perfectionism. Design We aimed to address this knowledge gap by examining the relationships between perfectionistic self-presentation, maladaptive emotion-focused coping, and affective response to laboratory problem-solving tasks. Methods A group of 130 undergraduates attempted challenging, time-limited arithmetic and anagram tasks. Upon task completion, participants’ scores were announced along with their mistakes. Additionally, participants completed measures assessing their positive and negative affect before and after lab performance, as well as coping strategies utilized during performance. Results Participants with elevated perfectionistic self-presentation experienced greater levels of negative affect and maladaptive emotion-focused coping. Moreover, nondisclosure of imperfection emerged as a significant predictor of lowered positive affect from pre- to post-performance after controlling for self-oriented perfectionism and socially prescribed perfectionism. Path analysis indicated that both nondisplay of imperfection and nondisclosure of imperfection exerted an indirect effect on post-performance negative affect via maladaptive emotion-focused coping. Conclusions Our findings highlight the unique contribution of perfectionistic self-presentation beyond trait perfectionism in performance settings and suggest a need for future research.

Other-Oriented Perfectionism in Children and Adolescents: Development and Validation of the Other-Oriented Perfectionism Subscale-Junior Form (OOPjr).

Research on adults indicates other-oriented perfectionism (requiring perfection from others) is associated with various consequential outcomes independent of self-oriented perfectionism (requiring perfection of the self) and socially prescribed perfectionism (believing others require perfection of the self). However, historically, the most widely used and researched measure of trait perfectionism in children, the Child-Adolescent Perfectionism Scale (CAPS), has omitted other-oriented perfectionism. In the present study, we address this by reporting on the multisource development and validation of the first self-report measure of other-oriented perfectionism specifically intended for youths: the Other-Oriented Perfectionism Subscale-Junior Form (OOPjr). Children (N = 107; Mage = 11.5, SD = 1.7) completed the OOPjr, CAPS, and measures of perfectionistic self-presentation, narcissism, social disconnection, depressive symptoms, and parental psychological control. Parents provided ratings of children’s self-oriented, socially prescribed, and other-oriented perfectionism. Psychometric analyses indicated the OOPjr is a homogenous and internally reliable scale that, when factor analyzed alongside the CAPS, displays measurement invariance across gender and replicates the three-factor solution found in adults. Furthermore, parent ratings of other-oriented perfectionism showed unique positive relationships with OOPjr scores, but not CAPS scores. Likewise, other-oriented perfectionism had independent positive relationships with narcissistic superiority and achievement-oriented parental psychological control, after controlling for self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism. Overall, our findings provide preliminary support for the use of the OOPjr as a measure of other-oriented perfectionism in youths.

Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale in Ecuador: psychometric properties and latent mean differences across genders

Introduction: This paper aims to examine the psychometric properties, i.e., validity, reliability, factorial invariance, and latent mean differences based on gender, of the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale, PSPS, in the Ecuadorian context. Method: A sample consisting of 597 Ecuadorian undergraduates participated in the study. Results: Confirmatory Factor Analysis supported a 14-item and three-dimensional model of the scale: Perfectionistic Self-Promotion, Nondisplay of Imperfection, and Nondisclosure of Imperfection. This model presented configural; measurement, i.e., metric, strong, and strict; as well as structural invariance across genders. Discriminant validity was observed by analysing correlations between PSPS factors and perfectionism traits. Males exhibited higher latent means of Perfectionistic Self-Promotion and also Nondisplay of Imperfection than females. Conclusions: The Spanish-translated and brief version of the PSPS represents a reliable and valid tool for assessing perfectionistic self-presentation in Ecuador.

Self-compassion buffers the effects of perfectionistic self-presentation on social media on wellbeing

About 30% of undergraduate students are perfectionists. Striving for perfection is associated with psychological maladjustment. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between perfectionism measured by perfectionistic self-presentation on social media, self-compassion, psychological flexibility and wellbeing. It was predicted that self-compassion and psychological flexibility have significant multiple mediating effects on the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation on social media and subjective wellbeing, with higher levels of perfectionistic self-presentation on social media related to lower levels of self-compassion and lower levels of psychological flexibility related to lower levels of wellbeing. Psychological flexibility was not found as a significant mediator of perfectionistic self-presentation on social media and wellbeing. However, self-compassion was found as a significant mediator of perfectionistic self-presentation on social media and wellbeing, indicating that self-compassion may buffer the effects perfectionistic self-presentation on social media has on wellbeing. Therefore, cultivating self-compassion may be a useful process of change to target for the treatment and prevention of perfectionistic self-presentation on social media. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

목적 본 연구에서는 고등학생의 내현적 자기애 성향이 대인관계문제에 미치는 영향에서 완벽주의적 자기제시와 정서표현 양가성을 매개 변인으로 선정하고 이들 간의 구조적 관계를 분석하였다. 방법 이를 위하여 강원도 소재 고등학생 362명을 대상으로 관련 변인을 측정하기 위하여 설문 취지를 설명하고 검사를 실시하였다. 수거한 설문지 중 불성실한 응답 자료를 제외하고, 총 345부의 자료를 신뢰도 분석과 기술통계 및 상관분석, 구조방정식 모형 분석을 실시하였다. 결과 첫째, 내현적 자기애는 대인관계문제, 완벽주의적 자기제시와 정서표현 양가성에 유의미한 영향을 미쳤다. 둘째, 정서표현 양가성이 대인관계문제에 미치는 영향은 유의미하였다. 셋째, 완벽주의적 자기제시가 정서표현 양가성과 대인관계문제에 미치는 영향은 유의미하지 않았다. 넷째, 내현적 자기애와 대인관계문제의 관계를 정서표현 양가성이 부분 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 다섯째, 내현적 자기애가 완벽주의적 자기제시와 정서표현 양가성을 순차적으로 이중 매개하여 대인관계문제에 영향을 미치는 경로는 유의하지 않았다. 결론 본 연구 결과는 고등학생의 내현적 자기애 성향이 대인관계문제에 미치는 영향을 살펴봄으로써, 내현적 자기애 성향 고등학생들의 대인관계문제에 대하여 정서표현 방법에 대한 상담 개입 및 교육의 필요성을 확인하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

중학생이 지각한 부모의 심리적 통제와 사회적 문제해결력의 관계: 완벽주의적 자기제시와 회피중심 대처방식의 매개효과

본 연구는 중학생들이 지각한 부모의 심리적 통제와 사회적 문제해결력의 관계에서 완벽주의적 자기제시와 회피중심 대처방식의 매개효과를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 전국에 재학 중인 중학생 284명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하고 자료를 수집하였다. 측정도구로는 부모의 심리적 통제 척도, 한국판 완벽주의적 자기제시척도, 사회적 문제해결력 척도, 대처전략검사 척도를 사용하였다. 본 연구의 결과들을 요약하자면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 부모의 심리적 통제는 중학생의 사회적 문제해결력과 유의미한 부적 상관은 보였으나 제안한 연구모형 내에서 둘 간의 유의한 직접효과는 보이지 않았다. 둘째, 부모의 심리적 통제와 사회적 문제해결력의 관계에서 완벽주의적 자기제시의 매개역할이 확인되었다. 셋째, 부모의 심리적 통제와 사회적 문제해결력의 관계에서 회피중심 대처방식의 매개역할이 확인되었다. 넷째, 부모의 심리적 통제와 사회적 문제해결력의 관계에서 완벽주의적 자기제시와 회피중심 대처방식의 이중매개효과가 확인되었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 선행연구들의 주요 변인들 간 경로 검증에서 한층 더 나아가 중학생들이 지각한 부모의 심리적 통제로 부터 사회적 문제해결력에 이르는 경로에 대해 통합적으로 살펴보았다. 또한 본 연구의 의의 및 제한점과 후속연구의 제언을 논의하였다.

Good Disciple or Good Actor: How and When Leader Perfectionism Impels Subordinates' Self-Regulation

Integrating goal orientation approach with self-concept perspective of self-regulation, we develop and test a multilevel theory that delineates both functional and dysfunctional subordinate responses toward leader perfectionism. We propose that when subordinates have a strong learning goal orientation, leader perfectionism leads to perfectionistic identity salience, resulting in increased job performance and proactive behavior. In contrast, when subordinates have a strong performance goal orientation, leader perfectionism hinders job performance and proactive behavior via perfectionistic self-presentation. The theoretical and practical implications for perfectionism and leadership are discussed.

Examining the Link Between Multidimensional Perfectionism and Depression: A Longitudinal Study of the Intervening Effects of Social Disconnection

Introduction: The Perfectionism Social Disconnection Model (PSDM) posits that perfectionism confers risk for depression by promoting social disconnection. However, the specific indirect effect of social disconnection on the prospective relation of perfectionism dimensions with depression severity is not well understood. The aim of the current study was to provide the first comprehensive examination of the PSDM. Methods: A diverse community sample of 447 completed measures of trait perfectionism, perfectionistic self-presentation styles, and depressive symptoms at baseline. Six months later, participants completed measures of perfectionistic self-presentation styles, social disconnection, and depressive symptoms. Indirect effects models were analyzed to examine the impact of each facet of perfectionism on social disconnection and subsequent depression severity. Results: Consistent with the PSDM, all perfectionism traits and self-presentation styles resulted in greater depression severity via one or more facets of social disconnection, with social hopelessness and loneliness demonstrating the most widespread effects. Furthermore, perfectionistic self-presentation styles and social disconnection demonstrated sequential indirect effects on the relation of self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism with depressive symptoms at follow-up. Discussion: This study is the first to demonstrate the depressogenic effects of all perfectionism dimensions. Findings delineate the interpersonal mechanisms underlying the perfectionism-depression link.

Perfectionistic self-presentation and orthorexia in exercisers.

The present study aimed to provide the first examination of whether perfectionistic self-presentation-an interpersonal expression of perfectionism-is related to orthorexia. We recruited a sample of 150 exercisers (Mean age = 27.7years). Participants completed the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale and the ORTO-15 on a single occasion. Two dimensions of perfectionistic self-presentation-perfectionistic self-promotion and nondisplay of imperfection-showed significant positive correlations with orthorexia. In addition, in multiple regression analyses controlling for the overlap between dimensions, perfectionistic self-promotion emerged as the strongest and only significant predictor of orthorexia. Perfectionistic self-presentation is positively associated with orthorexia in exercisers. Perfectionistic self-promotion-a need to portray an image of perfection to others-is primarily responsible for this relationship. Cross-sectional study, Level V.

Perfectionistic Self-Presentation, Socially Prescribed Perfectionism, Self-Oriented Perfectionism, Interpersonal Hopelessness, and Suicidal Ideation in U.S. Adults: Reexamining the Social Disconnection Model

Objective Research has linked perfectionism to increased suicidal ideation (SI), although less is known regarding the mechanisms that explain this relation. The Perfectionism Social Disconnection Model (PSDM) posits that interpersonal aspects of perfectionism cause interpersonal problems (e.g., hostility, loneliness) which in turn increase a person’s risk for experiencing SI. The present study aimed to replicate and extend previous findings related to the PSDM and SI using measures of interpersonal hopeless and general hopelessness. Method Tenets of the PSDM were tested in a sample of 313 U.S. adults with a history of SI, by determining whether experiences of general hopelessness and interpersonal hopelessness explained the relation between three types of perfectionism: perfectionistic self-presentation (PSP), socially prescribed perfectionism (SPP), and self-oriented perfectionism (SOP). Results Results indicated that PSP, SPP, and SOP were positively associated with SI, general hopelessness, and interpersonal hopelessness.The relation between aspects of perfectionism and SI demonstrated an indirect effect through interpersonal hopelessness only. Conclusions These results lend support to the PSDM’s assertion that interpersonal problems aid in explaining the relation between perfectionism and SI. The current study was limited by the cross-sectional nature of the study as well as the homogenous sample. Implications for research and clinical work are discussed. The purpose this study is to grasp a perfectionistic self-presentation method in a life dance leader and to arrange a plan of effectively enhancing the objectified body consciousness and the physical self-efficacy along with the positive psychological change according to this by closely examining the influence of perfectionistic self-posture in a life dance leader upon the objectified body consciousness and the physical self-efficacy. The findings of the study were as follows: First, the perfectionistic self-presentation in a life dance leader was indicated to have a significant influence upon the objectified body consciousness. Second, the perfectionistic self-presentation in a life dance leader appeared to have a significant impact on the physical self-efficacy. Third, it was shown that there is causality among the perfectionistic self-presentation, the objectified body consciousness, and the physical self-efficacy in a life dance leader.

SELF-PRESENTATION ON SOCIAL NETWORK SITES, BIG FIVE AND DARK TRIAD PERSONALITY TRAITS

The spread of social networks as a new environment allows representing self-image and psychological characteristics more or less different from reality. The studies of social network sites (SNS) confirm that self-presentation on the SNS is characterized by using specific strategies to display and regulate information about oneself. Self-monitoring and perfectionistic self-presentation can be considered essential characteristics of self-presentation on a social network site profile. Various connections between personality traits and characteristics of self-presentation on the SNS are revealed. Many studies replicate the relations between extraversion, neuroticism, and narcissism with social network activity and self-image representation. In the current study, we examined the relationship between the characteristics of self-presentation on a social network (realistic demonstrative self and fake deceiving self) with the Big Five and the Dark Triad traits. The characteristics of self-presentation and personality traits were assessed on a sample of 478 undergraduate students. Generally, a realistic demonstrative self is associated with the desire to show the best side of self (self-monitoring), avoidance of self-discussion, while a fake deceiving self reveals connections focusing on others' reactions to self-presentation. Consciousness, neuroticism, openness, and narcissism are predictors for realistic, demonstrative self-presentation, and conscientiousness and Machiavellianism are predictors for false, deceptive self-presentation. Thus, realistic demonstrative self-presentation is associated with controlling the information posted in the network and the desire to arouse admiration, and false self-presentation manifesting as a purposeful strategy for creating an unrealistic image.

The Role of Perfectionistic Self-Presentation in Pediatric Pain.

This study sought to better understand the associations between perfectionistic self-presentation and measures of pain intensity, pain catastrophizing, pain interference, and fatigue in children and adolescents with pain. In the study, 218 adolescents responded to measures of perfectionistic self-presentation (i.e., perfectionistic self-promotion, nondisplay of imperfection and nondisclosure of imperfection), pain intensity, pain catastrophizing, pain interference, and fatigue. Four hierarchical regression analyses and three mediation analyses were conducted. Our results showed that perfectionistic self-promotion was significantly and independently associated with pain intensity and that nondisplay of imperfection was significantly and independently associated with pain catastrophizing, pain interference, and fatigue. Nondisclosure of imperfection was not significantly associated with any criterion variable. Pain catastrophizing mediated the association between both perfectionistic self-presentation and nondisplay imperfection and pain interference but not between nondisclosure of imperfection and pain interference. The findings provide new information about the role of perfectionistic self-presentation in children and adolescents’ experience of pain. These findings, if replicated, support perfectionism as a potential target of pain treatment in young people.

대학생의 완벽주의적 자기제시와 SNS 중독경향성의 관계: 사회불안을 통한 경험회피의 조절된 매개효과

This study intended to determine the moderated mediating effect of experiential avoidance through social anxiety in the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and SNS addiction proneness. To this end, this study surveyed 408 university students with a self-report questionnaire, and the results were analyzed using SPSS Macro. The results were as follows: First, there was a positive relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and SNS addiction proneness. Second, there was a partial mediating effect of experiential avoidance in the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and SNS addiction proneness. Third, there was a moderating effect of social anxiety in the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and experiential avoidance. Fourth, there was a moderated mediating effect of experiential avoidance through social anxiety in the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and SNS addiction proneness. This study is meaningful in that it can be used to develop improved measures for preventing SNS addiction proneness.

Coach Burnout in Relation to Perfectionistic Cognitions and Self-Presentation.

Coaching athletes is highly rewarding yet stressful, especially at the elite level where media, fans, and sponsors can contribute to an environment that, if not well-managed by the coach, can lead to burnout. Coaches who display perfectionistic tendencies, such as striving for flawlessness, may be particularly vulnerable—even more so if they are overly critical of themselves and have a tendency to ruminate over their performance, or if they are attempting to convey an image of faultlessness, or both. A total of 272 coaches completed a battery of inventories assessing burnout, perfectionistic thoughts, and the tendency for perfectionistic self-presentation. All variables correlated significantly: coaches with higher scores on exhaustion scored higher both on perfectionistic thoughts and self-presentation. However, when three subscales of perfectionistic self-presentation were considered separately, lower and nonsignificant correlations emerged. We believe that this can be explained by the heterogeneous group of coaches participating in this study. Whereas all coaches may at times ruminate privately—self-oriented perfectionism—about their perceived failure to perform to expectations, not all may feel the pressure to present themselves to others as faultless—a more socially prescribed perfectionism. This finding warrants further investigation, preferably comparing coaches at different levels of public scrutiny.

A comprehensive model of disordered eating among aesthetic athletic girls: Exploring the role of body image-related cognitive fusion and perfectionistic self- presentation.

The incidence of disordered eating among athlete populations is considerably higher than in the general population. Less well understood is the body image-related emotional processes that might lead to disordered eating attitudes and behaviours, specifically among aesthetic athletic girls. Thus, the aim of the present study was to explore the role that body image-related cognitive fusion plays in disordered eating, and the mediating role of body image-related perfectionist self-presentation on this relationship, in aesthetic athletic girls. This study comprised 142 young female athletes from aesthetic sports, who completed self-report measures. A path analysis was conducted to explore the proposed theoretical model, while controlling for age and zBMI. The path model revealed an excellent fit and explained 71% of the severity of disordered eating. Results showed that body image-related cognitive fusion influences disordered eating behaviours, through the mechanism of body image-related perfectionist self-presentation, even when controlling for age and zBMI. Findings suggested that, in aesthetic athletic girls, the entanglement in body image-related thoughts may be associated with the need to present a perfect body image to others, which may lead to disordered eating attitudes and behaviours, adopted as a means to control weight and body shape. The present study highlights the relevance of body image-related processes in disordered eating and suggests the importance of educational programmes that target the development of more adaptive emotion regulation strategies concerning body image in athletes, particularly from aesthetic sports.

Traits of pathological narcissism and dysfunctional eating in women: The role of perfectionistic discrepancy

Dysfunctional eating attitudes and behaviors are very common among women. Recent findings suggest that these attitudes are linked to traits of pathological narcissism. However, mechanisms underlying this association need to be elucidated. We investigated the relationship between traits of pathological narcissism and dysfunctional eating attitudes and behaviors in women, testing whether perfectionistic tendencies mediate this association. The study involved a community-based sample of women (N = 306) who completed measures of grandiose and vulnerable narcissistic traits, attitudes of perfectionistic discrepancy and perfectionistic self-presentation, and dysfunctional eating attitudes and behaviors. Results show that vulnerable narcissistic traits are linked to dysfunctional eating attitudes and behaviors. Moreover, discrepancy between the actual self and the ideal self partially explains why women high in vulnerable narcissism engage in dysfunctional eating attitudes and behaviors. Grandiose narcissism was not uniquely associated with dysfunctional eating. The study suggests that the narcissistic need for being perfect, but not the narcissistic need for presenting oneself as perfect to others, promotes dysfunctional eating attitudes and behaviors in women.
