Perceptual target discriminability modulates the Simon effect beyond the fading of distractor-based activation: Insights from delta plots and diffusion model analyses.

The visual Simon task is widely employed to explore the underlying mechanisms of sensorimotor processing in the presence of task-relevant (targets) and task-irrelevant (distracting) location information. Critically, the Simon effect is considered as an indicator of action-related interference resulting from distractor-based activation, which fades out over time. In this study, we tested whether attenuated Simon effects with slower task processing may be fully explained by the fading of distractor-based response activation. To that end, we selectively manipulated perceptual target discriminability by varying the ratio of differently colored dots within (Experiment 1) and between blocks (Experiment 2). According to pure fading activation accounts, the negative-going delta plots of the two discriminability conditions should overlap across the entire reaction time (RT) distribution. In contrast to this prediction, the negative-going DPs for the two discriminability conditions did not overlap in either experiment. Instead, the Simon effect was either consistently smaller (Experiment 1) or larger (Experiment 2) across the entire RT distribution in the easy condition compared to the hard condition. This result pattern indicates that perceptual target discriminability affected conflict resolution beyond the mere fading of distractor-based activation. Exploratory model-based analyses suggest a stronger processing of relevant perceptual information with more discriminable targets, which may counteract the influence of distracting location information. However, as the exact effects of discriminability on conflict processing seem to depend on variation mode (trialwise vs. blockwise), the importance of global strategic effects is also highlighted. Multidimensional vision sensors for information processing.

The visual scene in the physical world integrates multidimensional information (spatial, temporal, polarization, spectrum and so on) and typically shows unstructured characteristics. Conventional image sensors cannot process this multidimensional vision data, creating a need for vision sensors that can efficiently extract features from substantial multidimensional vision data. Vision sensors are able to transform the unstructured visual scene into featured information without relying on sophisticated algorithms and complex hardware. The response characteristics of sensors can be abstracted into operators with specific functionalities, allowing for the efficient processing of perceptual information. In this Review, we delve into the hardware implementation of multidimensional vision sensors, exploring their working mechanisms and design principles. We exemplify multidimensional vision sensors built on emerging devices and silicon-based system integration. We further provide benchmarking metrics for multidimensional vision sensors and conclude with the principle of device-system co-design and co-optimization.

Parkinson's disease impairs cortical sensori-motor decision-making cascades.

The transformation from perception to action requires a set of neuronal decisions about the nature of the percept, identification and selection of response options and execution of the appropriate motor response. The unfolding of such decisions is mediated by distributed representations of the decision variables-evidence and intentions-that are represented through oscillatory activity across the cortex. Here we combine magneto-electroencephalography and linear ballistic accumulator models of decision-making to reveal the impact of Parkinson's disease during the selection and execution of action. We used a visuomotor task in which we independently manipulated uncertainty in sensory and action domains. A generative accumulator model was optimized to single-trial neurophysiological correlates of human behaviour, mapping the cortical oscillatory signatures of decision-making, and relating these to separate processes accumulating sensory evidence and selecting a motor action. We confirmed the role of widespread beta oscillatory activity in shaping the feed-forward cascade of evidence accumulation from resolution of sensory inputs to selection of appropriate responses. By contrasting the spatiotemporal dynamics of evidence accumulation in age-matched healthy controls and people with Parkinson's disease, we identified disruption of the beta-mediated cascade of evidence accumulation as the hallmark of atypical decision-making in Parkinson's disease. In frontal cortical regions, there was inefficient processing and transfer of perceptual information. Our findings emphasize the intimate connection between abnormal visuomotor function and pathological oscillatory activity in neurodegenerative disease. We propose that disruption of the oscillatory mechanisms governing fast and precise information exchanges between the sensory and motor systems contributes to behavioural changes in people with Parkinson's disease.

An in-sensor humidity computing system for contactless human-computer interaction.

Being capable of processing large amounts of redundant data and decreasing power consumption, in-sensor computing approaches play significant roles in neuromorphic computing and are attracting increasing interest in perceptual information processing. Herein, we proposed a high performance humidity-sensitive memristor based on a Ti/graphene oxide (GO)/HfOx/Pt structure and verified its potential for application in remote health management and contactless human-machine interfaces. Since GO possesses abundant hydrophilic groups (carbonyl, epoxide, and hydroxyl), the memristor shows a high humidity sensitivity, fast response, and wide response range. By utilizing the proton-modulated redox reaction, humidity exposure to the memristor induces a dynamic change in the switching between high and low resistance states, ensuring essential synaptic learning functions, such as paired-pulse facilitation, spike number-dependent plasticity, and spike amplitude-dependent plasticity. More importantly, based on the humidity-induced salient features originating from the abundant hydrophilic functional groups in GO, we have implemented a noncontact human-machine interface utilizing the respiratory mode in humans, demonstrating the potential of promoting health monitoring applications and effectively blocking virus transmission. In addition, the high recognition accuracy of contactless handwriting in a 5 × 5 array artificial neural network was successfully achieved, which is attributed to the excellent emulated synaptic behaviors. This study provides a feasible method to develop an excellent humidity-sensitive memristor for constructing efficient in-sensor computing for application in health management and contactless human-computer interaction.

Well-being is associated with cortical thickness network topology of human brain

BackgroundLiving a happy and meaningful life is an eternal topic in positive psychology, which is crucial for individuals’ physical and mental health as well as social functioning. Well-being can be subdivided into pleasure attainment related hedonic well-being or emotional well-being, and self-actualization related eudaimonic well-being or psychological well-being plus social well-being. Previous studies have mostly focused on human brain morphological and functional mechanisms underlying different dimensions of well-being, but no study explored brain network mechanisms of well-being, especially in terms of topological properties of human brain morphological similarity network.MethodsTherefore, in the study, we collected 65 datasets including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and well-being data, and constructed human brain morphological network based on morphological distribution similarity of cortical thickness to explore the correlations between topological properties including network efficiency and centrality and different dimensions of well-being.ResultsWe found emotional well-being was negatively correlated with betweenness centrality in the visual network but positively correlated with eigenvector centrality in the precentral sulcus, while the total score of well-being was positively correlated with local efficiency in the posterior cingulate cortex of cortical thickness network.ConclusionsOur findings demonstrated that different dimensions of well-being corresponded to different cortical hierarchies: hedonic well-being was involved in more preliminary cognitive processing stages including perceptual and attentional information processing, while hedonic and eudaimonic well-being might share common morphological similarity network mechanisms in the subsequent advanced cognitive processing stages.

Perception and Memory in the Ventral Visual Stream and Medial Temporal Lobe.

Perception and memory are traditionally thought of as separate cognitive functions, supported by distinct brain regions. The canonical perspective is that perceptual processing of visual information is supported by the ventral visual stream, whereas long-term declarative memory is supported by the medial temporal lobe. However, this modular framework cannot account for the increasingly large body of evidence that reveals a role for early visual areas in long-term recognition memory and a role for medial temporal lobe structures in high-level perceptual processing. In this article, we review relevant research conducted in humans, nonhuman primates, and rodents. We conclude that the evidence is largely inconsistent with theoretical proposals that draw sharp functional boundaries between perceptual and memory systems in the brain. Instead, the weight of the empirical findings is best captured by a representational-hierarchical model that emphasizes differences in content, rather than in cognitive processes within the ventral visual stream and medial temporal lobe.

Recognition and evaluation of mental workload in different stages of perceptual and cognitive information processing using a multimodal approach

This study explores the effects of different perceptual and cognitive information processing stages on mental workload by assessing multimodal indicators of mental workload such as the NASA-TLX, task performance, ERPs and eye movements. Repeated measures ANOVA of the data showed that among ERP indicators, P1, N1 and N2 amplitudes were sensitive to perceptual load (P-load), P3 amplitude was sensitive to P-load only in the prefrontal region during high cognitive load (C-load) states, and P3 amplitude in the occipital and parietal regions was sensitive to C-load. Among the eye movement indicators, blink frequency was sensitive to P-load in all C-load states, but to C-load in only low P-load states; pupil diameter and blink duration were sensitive to both P-load and C-load. Based on the above indicators, the k-nearest neighbours (KNN) algorithm was used to propose a classification method for the four different mental workload states with an accuracy of 97.89%. Practitioner summary: Based on the results of this study, it is possible to implement the monitoring of mental workload states and optimise brain task allocation in operations involving high mental workload, such as human-computer interaction.

Multimodal collaborative brain-computer interfaces aid human-machine team decision-making in a pandemic scenario

Objective. Critical decisions are made by effective teams that are characterized by individuals who trust each other and know how to best integrate their opinions. Here, we introduce a multimodal brain-computer interface (BCI) to help collaborative teams of humans and an artificial agent achieve more accurate decisions in assessing danger zones during a pandemic scenario. Approach. Using high-resolution simultaneous electroencephalography/functional MRI (EEG/fMRI), we first disentangled the neural markers of decision-making confidence and trust and then employed machine-learning to decode these neural signatures for BCI-augmented team decision-making. We assessed the benefits of BCI on the team’s decision-making process compared to the performance of teams of different sizes using the standard majority or weighing individual decisions. Main results. We showed that BCI-assisted teams are significantly more accurate in their decisions than traditional teams, as the BCI is capable of capturing distinct neural correlates of confidence on a trial-by-trial basis. Accuracy and subjective confidence in the context of collaborative BCI engaged parallel, spatially distributed, and temporally distinct neural circuits, with the former being focused on incorporating perceptual information processing and the latter involving action planning and executive operations during decision making. Among these, the superior parietal lobule emerged as a pivotal region that flexibly modulated its activity and engaged premotor, prefrontal, visual, and subcortical areas for shared spatial-temporal control of confidence and trust during decision-making. Significance. Multimodal, collaborative BCIs that assist human-artificial agent teams may be utilized in critical settings for augmented and optimized decision-making strategies.

Auditory Spectro-Temporal Modulation Training in Children With Auditory Processing Disorder

Objectives: Auditory processing disorder (APD) is due to the deficits in perceptual processing of acoustic information in the auditory system, characterized by poor speech perception of noise, regardless of normal hearing. The variability in speech function of APD children can be partly explained by changes in the encoding of spectro-temporal modulations (STMs) which have been overlooked, despite their significance. Given that enhancing STM sensitivity and its processing can be an appropriate way to improve the listener’s ability to retrieve and integrate speech segments covered by noise, we decided to evaluate the effects of STM-based auditory training on speech perception in noise and the reliability of this training in children with APD. Methods: Thirty-five children with APD (8-12 years old) were randomly divided into the training (n=17) and control groups (n=18) to evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of STM training on speech in noise perception. The intervention group was trained to detect STM by 120 trials every day for ten days. The STM detection thresholds and speech perception in noise were evaluated before and immediately after the finalization of formal training sessions in both groups. To address the training reliability, the tests were repeated one month after practice in the training group. Results: Following the completion of STM auditory training, the trained APD children improved notably in STM detection tasks and speech in noise tests (P<0.05). The post-training progress of STM detection thresholds and consonant-vowel in the noise test was preserved for one month after training (P>0.05), but the word in the noise test, especially in the right ear, was not retained (P<0.05). Discussion: Auditory spectro-temporal modulation training can lead to better processing of STM modulation. Its effects can be generalized to higher-order processing, such as speech perception in noise. Auditory training based on STM processing enhancement can play an essential role in improving speech comprehension in the noise abilities of children with APD.

Cortico-Brainstem Mechanisms of Biased Perceptual Decision-Making in the Context of Pain

Prior expectations can bias how we perceive pain. Using a drift diffusion model, we recently showed that this influence is primarily based on changes in perceptual decision-making (indexed as shift in starting point). Only during unexpected application of high-intensity noxious stimuli, altered information processing (indexed as increase in drift rate) explained the expectancy effect on pain processing. Here, we employed functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural basis of both these processes in healthy volunteers. On each trial, visual cues induced the expectation of high- or low-intensity noxious stimulation or signaled equal probability for both intensities. Participants categorized a subsequently applied electrical stimulus as either low- or high-intensity pain. A shift in starting point towards high pain correlated negatively with right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activity during cue presentation underscoring its proposed role of “keeping pain out of mind”. This anticipatory right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex signal increase was positively correlated with periaqueductal gray (PAG) activity when the expected high-intensity stimulation was applied. A drift rate increase during unexpected high-intensity pain was reflected in amygdala engagement and increased functional connectivity between amygdala and PAG. Our findings suggest involvement of the PAG in both decision-making bias and altered information processing to implement expectancy effects on pain. PerspectiveModulation of pain through expectations has been linked to changes in perceptual decision-making and altered processing of afferent information. Our results suggest involvement of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and periaqueductal gray in these processes.

Learning Faces as Concepts Improves Face Recognition by Engaging the Social Brain Network.

Face recognition benefits from associating social information to faces during learning. This has been demonstrated by better recognition for faces that underwent social than perceptual evaluations. Two hypotheses were proposed to account for this effect. According to the feature-elaboration hypothesis, social evaluations encourage elaborated processing of perceptual information from faces. According to a social representation hypothesis, social evaluations convert faces from a perceptual representation to a socially meaningful representation of a person. To decide between these two hypotheses, we ran a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study in which we functionally localized the posterior face-selective brain areas and social processing brain areas. Participants watched video-clips of young adults and were asked to study them for a recognition test, while making either perceptual evaluations or social evaluations about them. During the fMRI scan, participants performed an old/new recognition test. Behavioural findings replicated better recognition for faces that underwent social then perceptual evaluations. fMRI results showed higher response during the recognition phase for the faces that were learned socially than perceptually, in the social-brain network but not in posterior face-selective network. These results support the social-representation hypothesis and highlight the important role that social processing mechanisms, rather than purely perceptual processes, play in face recognition.

Auditory processing in normally hearing individuals with and without tinnitus: assessment with four psychoacoustic tests

PurposeIn most cases, tinnitus co-exists with hearing loss, suggesting that poorer speech understanding is simply due to a lack of acoustic information reaching the central nervous system (CNS). However, it also happens that patients with tinnitus who have normal hearing also report problems with speech understanding, and it is possible to suppose that tinnitus is to blame for difficulties in perceptual processing of auditory information. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the auditory processing abilities of normally hearing subjects with and without tinnitus.MethodsThe study group comprised 97 adults, 54 of whom had normal hearing and chronic tinnitus (the study group) and 43 who had normal hearing and no tinnitus (the control group). The audiological assessment comprised pure-tone audiometry and high-frequency pure-tone audiometry, impedance audiometry, and distortion product oto-acoustic emission assessment. To evaluate possible auditory processing deficits, the Frequency Pattern Test (FPT), Duration Pattern Test (DPT), Dichotic Listening Test (DLT), and Gap Detection Threshold (GDT) tests were performed.ResultsThe tinnitus subjects had significantly lower scores than the controls in the gap detection test (p < 0.01) and in the dichotic listening test (p < 0.001), but only for the right ear. The results for both groups were similar in the temporal ordering tests (FPT and DPT). Right-ear advantage (REA) was found for the controls, but not for the tinnitus subjects.ConclusionIn normally hearing patients, the presence of tinnitus may be accompanied with auditory processing difficulties.

Central auditory processing in bilinguals

Background and Aim: The majority of the world’s population is bilingual. Bilingualism is a form of sensory enrichment that translates to gains in cognitive abilities; these cognitive gains in attention and memory are known to modulate subcortical processing of auditory stimuli. Sec­ond language acquisition has a broad impact on various psychological, cognitive, memory, and linguistic processes. Central auditory processing (CAP) is the perceptual processing of auditory information. Due to its importance in bilingu­alism, this study aimed to review the CAP of bilinguals. Recent Findings: The CAP was studied in three areas: dichotic listening, temporal processing, and speech in noise perception. Regarding dicho­tic listening, studies have shown that bilinguals have better performance in staggered spondaic word (SSW) test, consonant-vowel dichotic test, dichotic digits test (DDT), and disyllable dichotic test than monolinguals, although similar results have also been reported in SSW and DDT. Reg­arding temporal processing, the results of bilin­guals do not differ from those of monolinguals, although in some cases, it is better in bilinguals. Regarding speech in noise perception, the results between bilinguals and monolinguals are varied depending on the amount of linguistic infor­mation available in the stimuli. Conclusion: Bilingualism has a positive effect on dichotic processing, no effect on temporal processing, and varied effect on speech in noise perception. Bilinguals have poor performance using meaningful speech and better performance using meaningless speech. Affective Dysregulation in Children Is Associated With Difficulties in Response Control in Emotional Ambiguous Situations

BackgroundAffective dysregulation (AD), or synonymously "irritability," is a transdiagnostic construct that serves as a diagnostic criterion in various childhood mental disorders. It is characterized by severe or persistent outbursts of anger and aggression. Emotional self-regulation is highly dependent on the ability to process relevant and ignore conflicting emotional information. Understanding neurophysiological mechanisms underlying impairment in AD may provide a starting point for research on pharmacological treatment options and evaluation of psychotherapeutic intervention. MethodsA total of 120 children 8 to 12 years of age (63 with AD and 57 typically developing) were examined using an emotional Stroop task. Signal-decomposed electroencephalographic recordings providing information about the affected sensory–perceptual, response selection, or motor information processing stage were combined with source localization. ResultsBehavioral performance revealed dysfunctional cognitive-emotional conflict monitoring in children with AD, suggesting difficulties in differentiating between conflicting and nonconflicting cognitive-emotional information. This was confirmed by the electroencephalographic data showing that they cannot intensify response selection processes during conflicting cognitive-emotional situations. Typically developing children were able to do so and activated a functional–neuroanatomical network comprising the left inferior parietal cortex (Brodmann area 40), right middle frontal (Brodmann area 10), and right inferior/orbitofrontal (Brodmann area 47) regions. Purely sensory–perceptual selection and motor execution processes were not modulated in AD, as evidenced by Bayesian analyses. ConclusionsBehavioral and electroencephalogram data suggest that children with AD cannot adequately modulate controlled response selection processes given emotionally ambiguous information. Which neurotransmitter systems underlie these deficits and how they can be improved are important questions for future research.

Concurrent visual working memory bias in sequential integration of approximate number

Previous work has shown bidirectional crosstalk between Working Memory (WM) and perception such that the contents of WM can alter concurrent percepts and vice versa. Here, we examine WM-perception interactions in a new task setting. Participants judged the proportion of colored dots in a stream of visual displays while concurrently holding location- and color information in memory. Spatiotemporally resolved psychometrics disclosed a modulation of perceptual sensitivity consistent with a bias of visual spatial attention towards the memorized location. However, this effect was short-lived, suggesting that the visuospatial WM information was rapidly deprioritized during processing of new perceptual information. Independently, we observed robust bidirectional biases of categorical color judgments, in that perceptual decisions and mnemonic reports were attracted to each other. These biases occurred without reductions in overall perceptual sensitivity compared to control conditions without a concurrent WM load. The results conceptually replicate and extend previous findings in visual search and suggest that crosstalk between WM and perception can arise at multiple levels, from sensory-perceptual to decisional processing.

The threshold and semantic characteristics of fast transient visual-perceptive processes in patients with affective disorders

The article is devoted to the currently topical problem of modern medical psychology, namely the study of conscious and unconscious perceptual-information processes in patients with affective disorders. The aim of the work was to determine the thresholds and semantic components of visual perception in patients with various forms of affective disorders. The latest method of ultrafast (tachistoscopic) demonstration of visual verbal stimuli was used to examine 23 patients with depression and anxiety-depressive disorders. The obtained results are compared with similar indicants of the control group, which consisted of 15 mentally healthy individuals, and analyzed using Student's criterion, one-way and multifactor models of analysis of variance. It has been shown that in the presence of an affective disorder, the threshold exposure time required for reliable identification of visual verbal stimuli is on average more than three times higher, i.e. is much worse than a similar perceptual threshold in individuals without mental disorders. Thus, in affective disorders there is inhibition and suppression of not only emotional and psychomotor, but visual-perceptual processes as well. It is proved that the time thresholds of visual perception significantly depend not only on the presence of emotional disorders, but also on their psychopathological structure, as well as on the age factor. In depressed patients, visual-perceptual disorders are much more pronounced than in patients with anxiety-depressive disorders, namely: in depression, the minimal absolute sensory thresholds are significantly higher, more attempts are made to adapt the visual analyzer, and this deficit is significantly increased depending on age. In patients with depressive and anxiety-depressive disorders also revealed significant features of psychosemantic components of the mechanisms of recognition of verbal stimuli, which consists in a kind of unconscious filtering of the latter with a predominant perception of words with negative emotional loading. The obtained results might be meaningful in the process of developing the new diagnostic methods for affective disorders and in creating the personalized psycho-correctional programs based on the methodological principles of subsensory stimulation.

A Role for Somatostatin-Positive Interneurons in Neuro-Oscillatory and Information Processing Deficits in Schizophrenia.

Alterations in neocortical GABAergic interneurons (INs) have been affiliated with neuropsychiatric diseases, including schizophrenia (SZ). Significant progress has been made linking the function of a specific subtype of GABAergic cells, parvalbumin (PV) positive INs, to altered gamma-band oscillations, which, in turn, underlie perceptual and feedforward information processing in cortical circuits. Here, we review a smaller but growing volume of literature focusing on a separate subtype of neocortical GABAergic INs, somatostatin (SST) positive INs. Despite sharing similar neurodevelopmental origins, SSTs exhibit distinct morphology and physiology from PVs. Like PVs, SSTs are altered in postmortem brain samples from multiple neocortical regions in SZ, although basic and translational research into consequences of SST dysfunction has been relatively sparse. We highlight a growing body of work in rodents, which now indicates that SSTs may also underlie specific aspects of cortical circuit function, namely low-frequency oscillations, disinhibition, and mediation of cortico-cortical feedback. SSTs may thereby support the coordination of local cortical information processing with more global spatial, temporal, and behavioral context, including predictive coding and working memory. These functions are notably deficient in some cases of SZ, as well as other neuropsychiatric disorders, emphasizing the importance of focusing on SSTs in future translational studies. Finally, we highlight the challenges that remain, including subtypes within the SST class.

Field Dependence / Field Independence as a Factor of Financial Decision Making With Varying Degrees of Risk Among Students

Currently, a new interdisciplinary field of research – financial behaviour-is rapidly developing. Psychological characteristics of the subject of financial behaviour can have a significant impact on the decision-making process in this field. Cognitive style, as an individual way of processing the information perceived by the subject, is one of the factors determining such procedural features of financial decision-making as: the time spent on decision – making, the speed of decision-making, the emotional state of the individual during decision-making, the nature of perceptual information processing (especially oculomotor activity), as well as the type of decision strategy - rational, irrational or marginal.

Teachers’ opinions regarding the symptoms of central auditory processing disorder in children with reading and writing difficulties

Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) refers to difficulties in perceptual processing of auditory information. It is a difficulty experienced by a person whose pure tone hearing, intelligence, and language abilities are within the appropriate age norms. In children with CAPD, difficulty in spelling and reading loudly can also be observed. Symptom scales (or questionnaires) are required to determine the presence of CAPD-like symptoms. If risks are found in the scales, the children are referred for diagnosis. The study reported on here aimed to investigate whether CAPD symptoms were underlying to reading and writing difficulty. Eight state schools were randomly selected. The questionnaire evaluating the presence of the CAPD symptoms was answered by 32 teachers for 328 children in total. While the children without reading and writing difficulty did not have CAPD indications, the probability of having CAPD was significantly higher in the children with reading and writing difficulties (p < 0.001). When gender effect was examined, a higher CAPD symptom score was found in males. As a result of the 18-item questionnaire, it was detected that children with CAPD symptoms had a significant disadvantage in reading and writing compared to children who did not have these symptoms. Children with CAPD symptoms should be referred for diagnosis if the CAPD indications are identified.
