Local residents' perception on factors affecting the willingness to pay for improved urban canal water: a case study in Can Tho city of Vietnam.

Urbanization and economic development cause water pollution in the inner-city canals and rivers globally. Bung Xang canal in Can Tho city of Vietnam is facing problems with water pollution due to the lack of centralized wastewater treatment plants and low public awareness on environmental protection. Perception of local residents was collected using structured questionnaires including both qualitative and quantitative information. Regression analysis was employed to evaluate the factors affecting the decision of respondents on the willingness to pay (WTP) to improve water quality in the Bung Xang canal. Knowledge about the environmental protection fee for domestic wastewater (10% of the VAT-excluded from the selling price of 1 m3 of tap water purchased), age of the respondents and their education levels affected the WTP positively, while respondents' perception on water quality affected the WTP negatively. There was 58.33% of the respondents showed the WTP for improved water quality in the canal. They agreed to pay a small fee of VND 10,000 to 15,000 (equivalent to USD 0.42-0.63)/month (1 US$= 23,700 VND). The result indicates that environmental education is the only way forward for a successful sustainable urban city.

Spatial analysis of cultural ecosystem services in Lublin: Perception of local residents and tourists

Motives: Cultural Ecosystem Services (CES) are perceived differently by local residents and tourists. Therefore, an understanding of spatial patterns in CES is important for urban planning.Aim: To determine whether residents and tourists differ in their perceptions of CES groups in Lublin, and whether these perceptions are influenced by gender, age, occupation, and frequency of visits.Results: The relative value of CES groups was ranked in the following descending order of importance: physical, social, cultural, inspirational, and spiritual activities by local residents (n = 138), and inspirational, cultural, spiritual, physical, and social activities by tourists (n = 134). The Wilcoxon test showed that the total and average number of the identified locations was higher among residents than tourists. The chi-square test revealed a difference between the CES categories identified by the local residents (x2 = 265.602, df = 5, p < 0.01) and tourists (x2 = 25.660, df = 5, p < 0.01).

Mist Spraying as an Outdoor Cooling Spot in Hot-Humid Areas: Effect of Ambient Environment and Impact on Short-Term Thermal Perception

Mist spraying is an active cooling technology used to alleviate heat stress during hot summers. However, there is limited experimental research on the relationship between ambient thermal parameters and spray cooling efficiency, as well as the transient and short-term thermal perceptions of local residents. In this study, an intermittent mist spraying system was set up, and environmental measurements, coupled with questionnaire surveys, were conducted under typical high temperature and still air conditions. The aim was to investigate the relationship among environmental factors, spray cooling effects, and dynamic improvements in human thermal perception. The results showed that higher ambient temperatures resulted in a more significant cooling effect, with a maximum value of 5.68 °C. Upon entering the spraying area, people experienced a large perceptual change, with the mean thermal sensation and thermal comfort change covering 73% and 62% of the total change ranges, respectively. This study indicated that the mist spray system can be activated if the ambient temperature exceeds 32.5 °C, helping local residents maintain a physiological state close to slightly hot and neutral comfort. These findings suggest that mist spraying can be applied in environmental design as an outdoor cooling spot to mitigate urban overheating, providing valuable insights for the application of mist spray systems in actual outdoor settings in hot-humid areas.

Bogatyrs and Rulers: Folklore Characters in the Ethnic Identity and Religious Practices of the Vyatka Mari

The author examines the mythological aspect of the entoregional identity of the modern Mari population in the Kirov oblast’ (the Vyatka, the Urzhum-Vyatka Mari) living in the Malmyzhsky and Urzhumsky districts. The author identifies the role of heroic images in modern ethno-cultural activism and the representation of the Vyatka Mari as the main problem of the study. Due to the multidimensional aspect of the problem, the article includes thematic sub-items: Features of the ethnic and religious identity of the Vyatka Mari - Images of folklore rulers in the perception of local residents - Legendary rulers in ethno-cultural activism and commemorative practices - Sacralization of folklore characters. The author considers this problem on the basis of the field materials (interview texts) collected during his expeditions to the Kirov oblast’ in 2015, 2017, 2021, and the regional media. In a multicultural region, inhabited by different ethnic groups, the Mari represent their identity through festive and sacred practices, as well as the veneration of local legendary rulers and heroes: Princes Akpatyr, Akmazik, Boltush (Poltysh) and others. Folklore heroes are objects of the religious cult of the Mari traditional religion, which is manifested in the ethnoregional self-consciousness of the Mari population. Legendary heroes are perceived by the local population as real historical characters. It is revealed that the beliefs in reality of the Mari heroes reflect the idea of the “golden age” of the history of the Vyatka Mari and their heroized past. The images of Boltush, Akpatyr are actively broadcast through the media, the ethnic component in education, local history literature. Thanks to the efforts of local activists, new objects of the cultural landscape emerge in the Malmyzhsky district - monuments at the sites of the symbolic burials of the Mari rulers. The conclusion is formulated that cultural activism, which appeals to the images of Mari folklore, plays a significant role in marking the ethnoregional identity of the Vyatka Mari people. In the text of the article the characters of the Mari folklore of Vyatka are considered in the context of identity. The obtained result allows to apply this theoretical framework for the study of folklore images in relation to the identities of ethnographic groups of the Mari and other peoples of the Volga region. The article is based on the dissertation “The system of mythological characters in the representation of the identities of modern Mari” for the degree of Candidate of Historical Sciences, defended in 2022 in the N.N. Miklukho-Maklay Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

EXPLORING THE POTENTIAL OF LOCAL FOOD IN PROMOTING CULTURAL HERITAGE TOURISM PRODUCT IN BANDAR MAHARANI, MUAR, JOHOR

Cultural tourism is based on collecting products classified as 'culture' offered in a destination area. Tourism products are one of the main attractions for tourists to travel to a place that produces or introduces tourism products. This study focuses on the potential of local food as a cultural heritage tourism product in introducing the identity of Bandar Maharani, Muar Johor. This paper explores the perceptions of local residents and tourists on local food. The existence of local food can attract tourists to try and taste the differences and uniqueness of the local food. The research was conducted in Bandar Maharani, Muar District. This study utilised qualitative and quantitative methods: observation and questionnaire surveys. Probability sampling in the form of a random sample was employed. The data analysis utilised the SPSS software. The findings lead to recommendations for improvements in tourism development in Bandar Maharani, such as promoting local food through social media and upgrading tourism facilities around Bandar Maharani. The effect of distance on risk perception towards waste incineration plants: a comparison between local residents living within 0–3 km versus 3–8 km in Dongguan, Southern China

Waste incineration is becoming the dominant method of waste disposal globally, including in China. Local residents are concerned about the potential negative impacts of waste incineration plants (WIPs) on their environment and health. This study aimed to measure the differences of risk perception of local residents living within 0–3 km versus those living 3–8 km distant from a WIP and explore other factors associated with risk perception. A cross-sectional study was conducted in communities surrounding three municipal WIPs in Dongguan, China. Of 881 residents randomly selected, 454 lived within 0–3 km and 427 lived 3–8 km from their local WIP. Differences in risk perception between the two groups and factors associated with risk perception were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. Seventy percent of the residents reported a high overall risk perception towards the WIPs. Overall risk perceptions, perceived health effects, and psychological stress domains were not significantly different between those living within 0–3 km and 3–8 km groups after adjusting for other variables. The effect of distance on risk perception was modified by social trust, as the study found that those in the 0–3 km group having low social trust had significantly higher risk perception. Gender, marital status, housing type, and duration of residence were independently associated with risk perception. Social trust is an important factor in alleviating the residents’ risk perceptions towards a WIP, and is further affected by the distance from the WIP. It is essential for WIP governors to provide accurate information about WIPs to their residents along with good quality control.

Prospect of Tourism Development in Khaptad National Park: A Local Perspective

Tourism in Nepal has flourished over the past two decades, making it one of the top global destinations for visit. Its abundant wildlife, stunning trekking routes, snow-fed rivers, picturesque lakes, and warm-hearted locals have been contributing perpetually to appeal to the global and local tourists. With the rise of the digital economy, tourism is experiencing modern advancements. This study aims to analyze the perceptions of local residents regarding tourism development. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to validate the research results, utilizing both descriptive and inferential statistics. A sample size of 219 respondents was conveniently selected; indicating a higher interest among males and a predominance of economically active individuals aged 21-40 years. The study shows ICT development emerging as a common challenge for visitors to Khaptad National Park. The SEM results confirmed the fit and validity of five constructs. To establish KNP as a premier tourist destination, the Tourism Board, Government, and Municipality should prioritize its development and manage the influx of tourists. Notably, motivation and subjective norms significantly influence visitors’ behavior, while perceived behavioral control and behavioral intention do not. Local communities should actively engage in promoting tourism through effective marketing strategies, and the improvement of ICT facilities will enhance travel convenience. Hence, efforts should be made to promote local business activities and products. The findings of this analysis will benefit various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Nepal Tourism Board, Department of Tourism, hotel associations, Travel agencies, local governments, researchers, professionals, and prospective students. This study aims to grasp the subjective perception of local residents in the midst of conflicts that arise in the process of constructing waste incineration treatment facilities. To this end, the Q methodology which is easy to grasp human subjective perception was used. Since the implementation of the local autonomy system conflicts over the location of non-preferred facilities have continued to arise in the region. With the revision of the Enforcement Rules of the Waste Management Act revised in 2021, each local government is speeding up the construction of waste incineration facilities to replace them. At this point conflicts over the location of waste incineration facilities may continue to increase and collective action by residents will also accelerate. As a result of the analysis of the study there were differences in the characteristics of respondents and the perspective of approaching incineration treatment facilities by type. In particular it was found that both the construction and operation of incinerators are important indicators of local resident's acceptance in terms of the location and operation of incinerators rather than the two aspects of approval and opposition. In addition it was suggested that it is necessary to establish a strategy to secure acceptability for local residents with stereotypes.

Linking social-ecological management and ecosystem service bundles: Lessons from a peri-urban agriculture landscape

Peri-urban ecosystems especially peri-urban agriculture play an important part in multiple dimensions of both rural and urban sustainability and resilience. Yet such ecosystems on which diverse services depend are not given the commensurate concerns like city themes, and thus the lack of understanding about the interdependence characteristic within ES variation and the driving mechanism of socio-environmental factors limits effective ecological policymaking and urban-rural planning. In this study, we provided a framework revealing the complicated relationship of ecosystem services in a peri-urban area in southern Shanghai, China which is dominated by agricultural landscapes. Our findings stem from a combination of mapping quantification, statistical approaches and GIS-based techniques. The results showed that the provisioning services show trade-offs to some extent with regulating and cultural services. Six distinct ecosystem service bundles are identified and they are shaped by numerous site-specific characteristics which foster the orientation of ecosystem service management toward multifunctionality. We concluded that the spatially explicit information with GIS-based trade-off analysis is an efficient way to uncover the complicated relationships among various ecosystem services. The optimization of land cover forms and landscape characteristics is required for the sustainable management of agricultural landscapes. Ecosystem service bundles incorporating landscape features and differentiated perceptions of local residents provide rich evidence for the formulation of sustainable cultural land management strategies. They should be regarded as an indispensable element in developing both city and rural planning and multifunctional management.

전시컨벤션센터가 지역주민의 장소애착심과 공동체의식에 미치는 영향 연구 - 킨텍스(KINTEX)를 중심으로

The purpose of this study is to investigate the significant effects of local residents' place attachment and sense of community subject to exhibition and convention centers, with the focus on the relationship between the convention and exhibition center and the local residents, which is the foundation of its industry. In addition, this study is to find out the place meaning of the convention and exhibition center and to suggest that there is a strong connection between local residents and local community. With this point of view, the theory and measurement scale of the place affection which has been actively studied in the field of environmental psychology was applied to the convention and exhibition field. The place meaning in the convention and exhibition center was analyzed, and in addition, the relationship between sense of community was identified and the direction of the role of the convention and exhibition center to the local residents and community is proposed. This study used a total of 289 valid samples of surveys responded by the local residents over 20 years of old and above, living in west-Ilsan and east-Ilsan centering ‘KINTEX’ which is located in Goyang city in Gyeonggi province. As a result of structural equation model analysis using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 22.0 programs, the factors such as place identity and place dependence from the place attachment has shown a significant impact on the effects of economic, social and cultural influences on the convention and exhibition center. On the other hand, the relationship between tourism influence factor and place attachment impact was not significant. As a result of analyzing the effect of place attachment on sense of community, both place identity and place dependence were all significant in sense of community. These results can be used as basic data to analyze the perception of local residents in the operation of the convention and exhibition center. Also, it is expected that the convention and exhibition center will continue to develop and serve as a medium to build a stable image and a differentiated characteristic of a location.

This study conducted a social network analysis based on the perception of local residents in tourist destinations for a more in-depth study of the Xenophobia phenomenon. Semantic network analysis, one of the big data analysis methods, was applied. An analysis of the difference between the period of overtourism and the period of Covid 19 was conducted.As a result, in the situation of overtourism, the phenomenon of Genopovia was more dominant among considerations of the genopovian phenomenon and economic situation. In the Covid-19 situation, the difference was drawn that the consideration of the economic situation was more dominant among the considerations of the Xenophobic phenomenon and the economic situation. Theoretically, by conducting Xenophobic research in the field of tourism, it contributed to the external expansion of research in the field of tourism on hate phenomena. In practice, the basis for this was provided to prepare countermeasures to the government, local governments, and the tourism industry.

DARK TOURISM IN COLOMBIA: MOTIVATION OF TRAVELLERS AND COMMUNITY PRACTICES

Based on the infamous case of the natural disaster of the Armero volcano eruption, this study aims to analyze the perception of the local community towards the development of dark tourism. In particular, the main central question to be addressed in this article is to examine the motivation of tourists and the perception of local residents towards the tourism activity related to this event. To this end, a qualitative methodology was adopted through observation and interview. Our results show that the main motivation of tourists visiting the Armero region is the curiosity to see other people's deaths. However, his feelings change after visiting this region, as curiosity turns to sadness at seeing the suffering of so many people. On the other hand, some locals are not pleased that their history and heritage revolve around tragedy and the dead. This study highlights the lack of awareness of this type of tourism. It is therefore necessary that governments and competent authorities implement measures to encourage the development of this type of tourism. In this way, the cultural impact of black tourism in Colombia can be improved.

Attitudes and perceptions of local residents and tourists – a comparative study of the twin national parks of Aggtelek (Hungary) and Slovak Karst (Slovakia)

National parks (NPs) are the flagships of protected areas, which primarily serve the protection of nature, but are also important sites for tourism. While karst areas are generally disadvantageous in terms of traditional farming, tourism can provide new livelihoods for those who live there. Therefore, it does matter how the local people relate to the NP and tourism, and the opinion of tourists is also an important factor. In this article, we present the results of a questionnaire survey conducted in the Aggtelek National Park (ANP) and the Slovak Karst National Park (SKNP). Our results show that for locals, the forest is the most important natural resource often visited by them, while for tourists, caves are the first choice. Conflicts between locals and tourists are negligible, and all actors agree to further increase tourism. In both ANP and SKNP, the majority of tourists and locals alike have a rather positive view of the NP. However, there is still a significant group of local residents who have a negative opinion about the NP. One reason for this may be that the locals feel they have only a marginal influence on NP decisions. The ANP plays a more important role in the lives of locals than in SKNP, because ANP has a larger organisational background and more human resources for a smaller population. Although geotourism is still largely missing from the vocabulary of local residents and park management alike, there is a small but significant part of visitors who consider themselves sensu lato geotourists. As for the motivation of tourists, the keyword is “cave”, while the content of the term “karst” is much less known for visitors (especially on the Hungarian side). In Hungary, the tourism to Baradla Cave is largely due to school education. We found that the internet, although one of the most important sources of information for visitors, was not the first port of call, and was not outstanding compared to other factors.

The study focused on the possibility of chemical accidents (fire, explosion, leakage) centered on the Daesan Petrochemical Complex, which is a densely populated area for chemical substances handling business sites, and 201 producers and 82 local residents were investigated. The purpose of this study was to present a risk communication plan by identifying the significant differences in risk perception, prevention (control) possibility, and fear of consequences (damage) for risk factors of fire, explosion, and leakage. The level of risk awareness and fear of damage of local residents was higher than that of producers at chemical substances handling business sites, and it was recognized that prevention (control) of accidents was difficult. For effective risk communication with producers of chemical substances handling workplaces and local residents, it is required to plan and operate risk communication activities in the direction of bridging the gap of risk perception and fear of harm between stakeholder together. ‘Odors or other anomalie’s is a practically controllable variable and it can be used to reduce the risk perception of local residents by thoroughly preventing its occurrence. In future research, it will be necessary to utilize risk communication between producers and local residents of various chemical substances handling business sites.

The Effect of Local Community Support Toward Sharia Tourism in Central Maluku Regency

This research aims to analyze the local community’s supported influence based on Sharia Tourism Development in the Central Maluku Regency. Some variables are affected by this research, such as negative and positive perceptions of local residents toward the economy, society, and environment around the population. The methodology of this research is quantitative research which uses an explanatory method. There are around 51 participants as samples. Those samples are chosen from Mamala and Morella villages directly involved in tourism activities. The data is processed and analyzed using SEM PLS ver.3 Software. Results of the study found that: the social impact had a positive and significant impact on local community support for sharia tourism development, and the negative impact had a negative and significant impact on the support for sharia tourism development. In contrast, the economic and environmental impact had a positive but not significant impact on the population support local to the development of sharia tourism

Residents’ risk perceptions, willingness to accept international tourists, and self-protective behaviour during destination re-opening amidst the COVID-19 pandemic

ABSTRACT This study investigates factors influencing residents’ risk perceptions of COVID-19 pandemic, their willingness to accept international tourists, and self-protective behaviour during destination re-opening during the pandemic. Drawing upon the concept of Protection Motivation Theory, and using a face-to-face quota sampling survey of 521 valid responses from residents in a world class tourist destination in Phuket, the structural equation modelling results prove the PMT model is powerful enough to explain risk perceptions of local residents in accepting international tourists when reopening a destination during the pandemic. Furthermore, this study confirms the negative influence of risk perception on intention to accept international tourists and the positive influence of risk perception on actual self-protective behaviour of residents. In addition, the role of risk perception as the mediator between PMT factors, willingness to accept international tourists, and self-protective behaviours is confirmed in this study. The article concludes by presenting academic and practical discussion and implications based on the findings.

Can Tourism Development Make Cities More Livable? Investigating 40 Cities in China.

The field of rapid urbanization has recently paid more attention to the relationship between tourism development and liveable city construction. Previous studies have mainly focused on the experiences of tourists in tourist cities and seldom paid attention to the perceptions of local residents. Based on survey data of nearly 10,000 permanent residents in 40 key tourist cities in China, this study uses a multilevel model to quantitatively analyse the natural environment characteristics, sociocultural environment characteristics and comprehensive attraction of tourism in different tourist cities to explore their impact on urban liveability satisfaction. Results show that the developed tourist cities do not exactly correspond to the cities with a high liveability evaluation. The objective evaluation of both the natural environment and the sociocultural environment has an important influence on the liveability of cities, but the influence of the natural environment is stronger than that of the sociocultural environment. An intermediary effect exists in the subjective evaluation of the natural environment and environments for liveability perception. Simultaneously, residents’ liveability satisfaction varies according to their age, education level, annual household income and other social and economic conditions. These findings provide insights for developing countries to further improve residents’ living quality and urban construction under the condition of the rapid development of tourism.

Political factors influencing residents’ support for tourism development in Kashmir

PurposeThis study aims to examine the relationship between the perceptions of local residents concerning political factors and support for tourism development in the Kashmir region.Design/methodology/approachPrimary data have been collected (n = 650) from the residents of the top five tourist destinations (Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Srinagar, Sonamarg and Kokernag) through a pre-tested questionnaire by multistage sampling method. In presence of non-normal data, the partial least squares structural equation model is applied for analysis. The study is based on the theoretical framework of social exchange theory (SET) and institutional theory of political trust (ITPT).FindingsResults suggest that trust in government, the perceived economic performance of government and level of power are negative determinants of support for tourism development, which nullifies SET for politically disturbed regions.Originality/valueThe results of this study are useful for the local government and tourism institutions in policy formation and fill the vast gap in tourism literature with a theoretical base. This study is also an addition to the existing literature on city tourism for the politically disturbed region.
