This study identifies two important factors that influence economists' perceptions of journal quality. These are the scientific impact of the journal as measured by citation frequency and the past reputation of the journal as reflected in earlier quality rankings. The results also suggest a bias in the rankings toward the more theoretical or general journals and also toward the older, more established journals.
