Purpose : The purpose of this study is to analyze papers related to homosexuality, determine the current status of research, and suggest future research directions. Methods : Using analysis criteria developed by the researchers, 211 articles between 1996 and 2022 were reviewed. Results : Quantitative research was 44.08%, qualitative research was 42.65%, literature and overview research was 11.37%, and mixed research was 1.90%. Research design 56.40% were academic journal papers and 38.86% were master's theses. Research subjects were 71.28% homosexual and 28.72% non-homosexual. The research fields were counseling and psychology 42.18%, social science 20.38%, education 14.69%, social welfare 7.11%, women's studies 5.21%, nursing 5.21%, humanities 2.37%, public health 1.90%, and medicine 0.95%. Key Variables were 25.59% for mental health-related studies, 19.43% for studies on perceptions of homosexuality among non-homosexuals, 13.74% for studies on homosexual identity experiences, and 10.43% for studies on experiences of discrimination against homosexuals. Conclusion : The amount of research is steadily increasing. Sufficient research should be conducted on the diverse life experiences of homosexuals using various research methods to understand and educate the subjects.

Alternative Books in black and white: race and homoeroticism in South African male nude photography from the apartheid period

ABSTRACT Representations of black-white homoeroticism and sensuality between men of colour in apartheid-era male nude photography aimed at white gay men, which, in South Africa, were exclusive to selected titles published by Alternative Books (AB) (1981–1991), are remarkable yet neglected in queer African studies. In this article, I explore how sexual apartheid was respectively maintained and transgressed in the historical reception of such photographs by two radically different readerships: that is, by censors involved in proscribing homoerotic commodities, and by AB’s intended audiences. Drawing from historical censorship reports on AB’s titles, I propose that the inconsistent treatment of photographs from these publications according to the racial categories of the men depicted is a particularly revealing iteration of selective homophobia and ‘official’ perceptions of homosexuality during apartheid. Considering, then, that AB’s titles anticipated a historical minority readership comprised of queer insiders rather than homophobic outsiders, I make the case for a corrective by ‘outing’ the queer and anti-racist potential of such diverse homoerotic images, which rendered intelligible possibilities for intimacy repressed elsewhere in consumer markets that catered to predominantly white gay audiences and that were, in a sense, complicit with the state’s whitewashing of male homosexual identity and desire.

Traditional family system, local government recognition and citizens' perceptions of homosexuality in Japan: an exploratory study

PurposeJapan has made some progress in recognizing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) rights, such as passing laws that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in some cities. However, there is still a long way to go in terms of legal protection and social acceptance. Understanding citizens' attitudes toward homosexuality can help inform policies and interventions that promote LGBTQ rights and reduce discrimination. This study explores factors that influence citizens' attitudes toward homosexuality in Japan.Design/methodology/approachThe research was conducted through a web-based questionnaire with 1,806 participants, where they were asked about their views on same-sex partnership recognition, homosexual rights and traditional Japanese family systems. The collected data were statistically analyzed to determine the factors that affect individuals' opinions regarding homosexuality.FindingsThe study determined that in Japan, traditional views are inversely related to same-sex partnership registration. Conversely, local government support for LGBTQ+ rights is directly associated with societal acceptance. Additionally, closer contact with the LGBTQ+ community promotes acceptance.Social implicationsThe study provides insights into the factors that shape societal attitudes toward homosexuality in Japan and highlights the importance of policies promoting diversity and inclusivity. By identifying these determinants, this study could help policymakers and advocates create effective strategies for promoting acceptance and equality for the LGBTQ+ community in Japan.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study that focuses on understanding the factors that influence the attitudes of Japanese citizens toward homosexuality.

Homoparenting as a public health issue: a scoping review.

To map global scientific production on homoparenting in the field of collective health or public health. In terms of methodological procedures, a scoping review was carried out, guided by the following question: What are the aspects addressed in global scientific production regarding homoparental families in the field of collective or public health? The searches were carried out in seven sources of scientific literature, including 58 studies, involving scientific articles and dissertations. The analytical treatment given to the studies, most of which were qualitative, followed the content analysis technique in the thematic modality. The results indicate that the perceptions of homosexuals and professionals about the care provided and health services in general was the topic addressed by the largest number of studies (n = 31), followed by heteronormative context of health services (n = 26); disclosure of sexual orientation (n = 20); fertilization (n = 14); educational information and actions (n = 5). Although the issue of same-sex parenthood has been discussed in some health sectors, there is awareness that it is necessary to rely on a consolidated basis through numerous studies when discussing this issue. It is concluded that, among other aspects, the scope of this review is not sufficiently problematized within the scope of health professionals' training and performance.

Why We Speak Up: The Effect of Preconceived Cause of Sexual Orientation on Heterosexual Engagement in the Homosexual Movement for Social Equality

Despite the increasing societal acceptance of homosexual individuals, the perception of homosexuality by heterosexual individuals is polluted by personal bias. My study observed the interaction between 422 heterosexuals and the homosexual community. First, my subjects self reported their beliefs on the determinant of sexual orientation (genetic or lifestyle). Next, they took the Activism Orientation (AO) and Sexual Prejudice (SP) Scales as a baseline measure of their relationship with members homosexual community. Subjects were randomly assigned to listen to an interview of two fictional homosexual individuals that spoke of life experience which either supported or contradicted the subjects’ self reported beliefs. Additionally, subjects were assigned to a high or low empathy condition toward the interviewee. After listening to the interview, subjects were given the choice to allocate $0 - $8,000 in support of a pro - LGBT charity. Subjects then retook the AO and SP scales to measure for significant changes in perception of homsexuals after the fictional scenario. Results indicated a significant decrease in the AO of subjects that viewed interviews that contradicted their beliefs. Additionally, subjects assigned to the low empathy condition donated significantly larger amounts. The present study has two main implications: Heterosexual individuals’ generalize their advocacy toward the LGBT community based on the actions of a singular homosexual. Furthermore, many activists naturally approach issues regarding social justice from a place of empathy, it is more sustainable to approach social justice movements from a logical perspective to allow for more meaningful and long term participation in a social justice movement.

The Formation of the Generational Difference in Social Cognition of Homosexuality: A Case Study of Mainland China

In mainland China, approximately 70 million LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) people are existing in society. In a predominantly heterosexual Chinese society, homosexual people are often treated with discrimination and prejudice. The perception of homosexuality also varies greatly by different age groups. These differences are generated by multiple social factors. This paper first uses semi-structured interviews to summarize the differences in perceptions of homosexuality among people of different age groups (young generation, middle-aged generation, old generation) from two perspectives (substantive identity and outward expression). Next, the paper analyzes the reasons for these differences in three major aspects: history, culture, and politics. Finally, this paper also looks into the future direction of homosexuality perceptions in China and offers practical advice and expectations from different aspects. The paper is hoped to promote greater acceptance and tolerance of homosexuals in Chinese society and practical measures taken by governments to create a homosexual-friendly society.

Social representations of different generations about everyday life of homosexuals in modern Russia

IntroductionThe problem of homosexuality is constantly in the spotlight of the mass media, social media and politicians. At the same time, the cultural and national specificity of attitudes towards the phenomenon of homosexuality seems obvious, as well as a significant polarization of opinions within Russian society itself. With significant attention to this issue, there are not many attempts to analyze the socio-psychological basis of representations about homosexuality. At the same time, in a number of foreign studies it was revealed that the modern Z Gen is distinguished by greater tolerance and freedom of views in terms of attitude towards traditionally segregated social groups.ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to identify representations about homosexuality among different generations of modern Russians.MethodsThe methodological basis of the research was the study of the structure of social representations (Vergesse methodique). The research methods implied the author’s questionnaire aimed at identifying representations about homosexuality and a modified version of the RAHI questionnaire. The sample was N = 444 (residents of Russia, age 16-65).ResultsThere was shown a significant difference between the Z Gen in terms of tolerance of representations about homosexuality. So called ‘double standards’ were identified in terms of attitudes towards male and female homosexuality. The rooted concept of homosexuality as a relationship based, rather, on a sexual rather than a romantic-spiritual level of relationships, was stated.ConclusionsMain hypothesis was confirmed: an inverse relationship between age and perceptions of homosexuality as normative was revealed.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

Homosexuality and Indian Civil Society: Reading Mahesh Dattani After Decriminalization of Section-377

The Indian Supreme Court in the Navtej Singh Johar vs Union of India judgement (6th September 2018), decriminalized homosexuality. However, the space cleared by the legal judgement cannot be immediately availed of by those affected by it because legally determined/defined space doesn’t necessarily become social space. This essay looks at the formation of this social space and the perception of homosexuality in civil society. It will examine the impediments of communication that homosexuals encounter in the heteronormative world, and the ensuing misunderstandings regarding homosexuality. It argues that a proper medium is necessary to provide communication in a social space that would then treat homosexuality as ‘normal’. I argue that Mahesh Dattani’s plays enable the imagination and the construction of such an accepting civil society.

SOCIAL REPRESENTATIONS ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY AMONG DIFFERENT GENERATIONS OF MODERN RUSSIANS

Relevance. The problem of homosexuality is constantly in the spotlight of the mass media, social media and politicians. Psychological studies of this phenomenon are easier to find in foreign rather than in Russian research. At the same time the cultural and national specificity of attitudes towards the phenomenon of homosexuality seems obvious as well as a significant polarization of opinions within society itself. This polarization can be gender, urban, class, and intergenerational, as evidenced by numerous sociological polls. With significant attention to this issue at the level of social strata, there are not many attempts to analyze the concept of homosexuality in line with the socio-psychological tradition. In a number of previous studies it was revealed that the modern Z Gen is distinguished by greater tolerance and freedom of views in terms of attitude towards traditionally segregated social groups. The purpose of this study was to identify perceptions of homosexuality among different generations of modern Russians. Homosexuality has been singled out among other sexual orientations (LGBT) as the most discussed in public discourse. The subject of the research is social perceptions of homosexuality, particularly among representatives of different generations. Methods. The methodological basis of the research was the study of the structure of social perceptions (metho P. Vergesse method). The research methods were the author’s questionnaire aimed at identifying perceptions of homosexuality as well as a modified version of the RAHI questionnaire (Gulevich et al., 2016). The study sample consisted of 444 people (residents of the Russian Federation,16 to 65 years old). Results and Conclusions. The hypotheses of the study were confirmed: an inverse relationship between age (belonging to a generational cohort) and perceptions of homosexuality as normative was revealed. A significant difference was shown in the Z Gen perceptions in terms of tolerance of homosexuality. The so-called double standards were identified in terms of attitudes towards male and female homosexuality. The rooted concept of homosexuality as a relationship based on a sexual rather than a romantic-spiritual level, was stated.

A Study on the Legislation in Same-Sex Marriage in Korea

관습과 밀접하게 관련되어 있다. 혼인제도는 끊임없이 변화해 왔지만 혼인은 여성과 남성의 결합이라는 점은 변화가 없었다. 그런데 혼인이 남성과 여성의 결합만이 아니라 같은 성의 사람간의 결합도 인정해야 한다는 주장과 함께 동성혼 법제화에 대한 요구가 증가하게 되었다. 따라서 오늘날 동성혼을 법제화한 나라 26개국에 달하고 있다. 그런데 우리나라에서도 동성혼 합법화에 대한 요구가 높아지고 있다. 이와 함께 동성혼 합법화를 반대하는 입장도 세력화하여 반대운동의 강도를 높이고 있다. 따라서 이 글은 우리나라 동성혼과 관련한 법해석론과 법원의 판결을 통하여 현행 헌법, 민법과 가족관계등록에 관한 법에 의하여 동성혼을 법적인 혼인제도로서 인정할 수 있는가를 고찰하였다. 우리나라의 현행법에 의하면 혼인은 이성혼만을 인정하는 것으로 동성혼은 혼인 제도로서 허용할 수 없다고 해석하고 있으므로 동성혼을 혼인제도로 인정하기 위해서는 법개정이 필요하다. 따라서 이러한 동성혼의 법제화를 위하여 어떠한 논의와 시도들이 있는가를 고찰하였다. 우리나라에서는 동성혼 법제화운동을 하는 단체들이 동성혼 합법화를 위한 활동을 적극적으로 전개하고 있다. 이 단체들은 미국에 있어서 주된 전략으로 사용된 동성혼 합법화를 위하여 미디어의 적극적 활용, 정치세력과의 연대 및 소송을 통한 사법적 해결을 위한 노력과 같은 전략들은 그대로 차용하여 사용하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 미국의 동성혼 법제화 과정에서 나타난 바와 같이 사회인식이 변화하지 않고는 입법을 강제하기도 어려울 뿐만 아니라 정치적 힘에 의한 입법을 통하여 동성혼을 법제화한다 해도 그 법을 국민들이 수용하기는 어렵다고 할 것이다. 그러므로 우리나라에서는 여전히 혼인은 한 남성과 한 여성의 결합이라는 인식이 강하기 때문에 입법을 통하여 동성혼을 법제화하는 것은 무리라고 할 것이다.The marriage system is a social system and at the same time a legal system related to social perceptions and customs. The marriage system has been constantly changing, but marriage has not changed in that it is a union of man and woman. However, there has been a growing demand for the legalization of the same sex with the assertion that marriage should recognize not only the union of man and woman but also the union of people of the same sex. Thus, reaching the country to legislate same-sex marriage today in 26 countries in the world. Korea still does not allow same-sex marriage legally. However, there are growing demands for the legalization of same-sex marriage in Korea. At the same time, the opposition to legalize same-sex marriage has also become more powerful, increasing the intensity of the opposition movement. Therefore, this article examines the marriage system and whether there were some attempts to legislate the same-sex marriage. It also analyzed what is incentive to bring about a legal system transformation. Through this analysis, I examined what the process of legal recognition of the same-sex marriage in foreign countries suggests to our country. The process of legislating the same-sex marriage in the United States has have a great impact on the legislation of the same-sex marriage in Korea. Homosexual advocacy groups have been using media to improve society s perception of homosexuality. They have linked homosexuality with political parties as political issues. They also sought to seek legal recognition of the same-sex marriage by filing a lawsuit. These strategies used in the United States are used by homosexual advocacy groups in Korea. In this study, it was found that the social change caused the change of the legal system. Also, I could see the change of the legal system leading to the change of society. It is also suggested that the role of the law is also important in ending the dispute in a divided society. In this respect, it is premature to enact the same-sex marriage in Korea.

Implicit Association Task and Perception of Homosexuality: Differences between African American and Non-Hispanic Caucasian Homosexual Males

ABSTRACT This study investigated the relationship between sexual orientation and minority group membership in a sample of African American and non-Hispanic Caucasian (NHC) homosexual men. Participants competed measures of pathology, sexual orientation, and ethnic identity. They completed two IATs, one using homosexual symbols and the other ethnically diverse homosexual images. Results indicated that African American participants reported more ethnic and sexual orientation discriminatory experiences than NHC. It was also found that both groups exhibited a positive association toward gay symbols. Both groups also demonstrated a bias toward NHC homosexual images, although the bias was stronger for NHC participants. Moderation analyses indicated that as internalized homophobia increased, preference for gay NHC images decreased, and that high ethnically discriminatory experiences resulted in stronger associations between NHC images and “good” attributes. Overall, the results partially support the minority stress theory and highlight some important differences between African American and NHC homosexual men.

A forma como a sociedade vê a homossexualidade sofreu alterações ao longo do tempo, sendo o objetivo deste estudo perceber de que forma é vista a homossexualidade na atualidade, tendo por base diferentes variáveis: sexo, meio (rural/urbano), idade, religiosidade, contacto interpessoal LGBT, habilitações académicas e o setor profissional. Este estudo foi do tipo quasi-experimental e de caráter transversal. A amostra foi de 192 indivíduos, 97 mulheres e 95 homens. Aplicou-se um questionário sociodemográfico e uma Escala Multidimensional de Atitudes Face a Lésbicas e Gays (EMAFLG). Os resultados evidenciaram valores mais elevados nas subescalas negativas e mais baixos na subescala positiva relativas à perceção da homossexualidade concluindo que os homens, os indivíduos que passaram a maior parte da sua vida em meio rural, as pessoas com mais idade, os indivíduos que se consideram religiosos, aqueles que não possuem contacto com LGBT, os que possuem habilitações académicas mais baixas e por fim os indivíduos que trabalham numa área do setor secundário são mais homofóbicos. Concluiu-se que existe preconceito relativamente à homossexualidade.

La masculinidad en escuelas secundarias públicas de San Luis Potosí, México.

The article provides an answer to the question: How do students from public high schools located in the city of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, perceive and build their masculinity? The public schools, according to the political profile of the Mexican State, implements mechanisms through which it promotes gender relations and the construction of a hegemonic type of masculinity, that is, patriarchal, linked with the values of neoliberalism. Accordingly, we analyze the school and curricular institutional space, and the practices of the students, which allude to the conformation and perception of masculinity in three processes: a) generational relations; b) bodily practices; c) perceptions of homosexuality. Because it is relevant in the speeches of the students, the relationship that the school maintains with the family space is also examined. Part of the analysis is based on the speeches of the students recovered through group interviews. One answer, as a conclusion, to the question asked, is that the students, from their sphere of reflexivity, resignify and create new practices that question and sometimes subvert, the hegemonic masculinity promoted by the schools.

The discourse of homosexuality in Korea is particularly pronounced in the cultural field, and literature, film, play and musical are the areas where homosexuality is the most visible. For a society that has long deemed heterosexuality as normal to accept and translate works on homosexuality in itself constitutes an ideological and political action since those works inherently contain a political claim that discrimination against homosexuals is not legitimate. Meanwhile, in less than a generation, terms referring to sexual minorities have gone through changes so radical that even contemporary people comprehend them very differently from each other. Homosexual, gay, homo, queer, fag or faggot and other vocabularies for sexual minorities are polysemic words which could be regarded as normal or depreciatory depending on how the public see homosexuality, and they also orient some of the most representative political correctness of these days. In other words, the terms could serve as a scale that could reflect the user’s perception of homosexuality, hence requiring a cautious approach from the translator. As such, this study attempts to analyze how words referring to sexual minorities in The Laramie Project are translated into the Korean language through text analysis and interview.

Family and Homosexuality in Chinese Culture: Rights Claims by Non-heterosexuals in Hong Kong

Family of origin is one of the less-studied areas to have been investigated during the rights-claiming process by non-heterosexuals. This paper discusses how family of origin plays a significant role in the claiming of rights (such as the authority to make health care or medical treatment, funeral arrangement and inheritance) by non-heterosexuals in Hong Kong. Because of the functional specificities of Chinese families and their perceptions of homosexuality, Chinese non-heterosexuals are eager to introduce their sexuality to their family of origin rather than participate in a more separated approach to coming out. This process constitutes a “coming home” approach to coming out as a member of a gender or sexual minority group. The negative effects of exclusion and ignorance not only affect the mental health of non-heterosexuals in Hong Kong but also shape and create social barriers to the claiming of rights. Findings from this study reveal that family of origin is a significant factor deterring non-heterosexuals from considering, planning or taking action to claim sexual citizenship rights.

Grappling with the issue of homosexuality: perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs among high school students in Kenya.

While the past decade has seen an improvement in attitudes toward homosexuality, negative attitudes are still prevalent in many parts of the world. In general, increased levels of education tend to be predictive of relatively positive attitudes toward homosexuality. However, in most sub-Saharan countries, it is still believed that people are born heterosexual and that nonheterosexuals are social deviants who should be prosecuted. One such country is Kenya, where homosexuality is illegal and attracts a fine or jail term. The purpose of this study was to examine high school students’ perceptions of homosexuality in Kenya. The participants included 1,250 high school students who completed a questionnaire on perceptions of homosexuality. The results showed that 41% claimed homosexuality is practiced in schools and 61% believed homosexuality is practiced mostly in single-sex boarding schools. Consistently, 52% believed sexual starvation to be the main cause of homosexuality. Also, 95% believed homosexuality is abnormal, 60% believed students who engage in homosexuality will not change to heterosexuality after school, 64% believed prayers can stop homosexuality, and 86% believed counseling can change students’ sexual orientation. The consequences for homosexuality included punishment (66%), suspension from school (61%), and expulsion from school (49%). Significant gender and grade differences were found. The implications of the study findings are discussed.

Using the Sociocultural Theory to Explain the Perceptions of Homosexuality among Kenyan and U.S. University Students

This study examined perceptions, attitudes and beliefs about homosexuality among Kenyan and United States (U.S.) university students. Participants included 2169 students from Kenya (n = 1044) and the U.S. (n = 1125) who completed a questionnaire on perceptions of homosexuality. Results showed Kenyan students held more negative attitudes and beliefs about homosexuality. Both groups acknowledged homosexuality exists on their campuses. Kenyan students reported parents were not aware of homosexuality practice. Significant gender differences were found with females holding positive attitudes and beliefs about homosexuality. The findings lend further support to sociocultural theory and provide evidence that the social context influences perceptions and understanding of social norms. Furthermore, the findings suggest the level of education may not influence attitudes and beliefs towards homosexuality similarly across cultural contexts.

Homohysteria: Definitions, Context and Intersectionality

In this article, we engage with the commentaries of our Feminist Forum article (McCormack and Anderson 2014) by Parent et al. (2014), Plummer (2014), Worthen (2014) and Negy (2014) to enhance understanding of the concept homohysteria and to explore its application to a range of demographic groups. Developing a stage model of homohysteria that accounts for both increases and decreases in levels of homophobia in U.S. cultures, we focus on three key issues that were highlighted by the commentaries. First, we discuss the definitional clarity of homohysteria. Next, we argue that while it is important to recognize the diversity of sexualities in the U.S. and historically, it is primarily heterosexuals’ perceptions of homosexuality that are most important. Finally, we call for the incorporation of an intersectional and international approach that extends the concept beyond heterosexual men in the U.S.

Influence of value predispositions, interpersonal contact, and mediated exposure on public attitudes toward homosexuals in Singapore

This national survey tracks changes in Singaporeans' attitudes toward lesbians and gay men (ATLG) and examines value predispositions, interpersonal contact, and mediated exposure as predictors of ATLG and acceptance of homosexuals. The study replicates and extends research done previously and addresses temporal shifts in values and views. Findings indicate that the relatively small positive change in ATLG from 2005 to 2010 was mainly due to values and demographic factors. The addition of several new predictive variables increased the variance explained for why people hold certain ATLG and their acceptance. Conformity to norms, intrinsic religiosity, Western orientation, interpersonal contact, and mediated exposure were significantly associated with both ATLG and acceptance of homosexuals. Perception of homosexuality as a choice was significantly associated with ATLG but not with acceptance of homosexuals. Asian orientation and extrinsic religiosity showed no significant association with either dependent variable. The findings are discussed in the context of a multicultural Asian society and future directions for research.
