Different Culture Means Different Discourse Perception: Personal True-based Story in Light of Face-Threatening Acts

One of the driving motives of language use is to pave the way for communication and understanding. However, sometimes the exclusive use of language cannot help to stream mutual understanding among people who have different cultures which, unfortunately, researchers have not treated in much detail. As such, this study brings to light the essential role of cultural norms and conventions in interaction. Based on a true story, the current study shows that different cultural norms can raise issues that cause misunderstanding and could lead to face threatening acts. This manifests that being aware of the interaction conventions of one’s culture does not necessarily mean that speakers of other cultures will have the same conventions, and what speakers of a certain culture consider to be polite may be considered impolite and trespassing in other cultures.

Society’s Perception on The Quality of Public Services and The Discourse on The Splitting of Nagari Manggopoh Agam

This study aims to determine the public's perception of the quality of public services in Nagari Manggopoh and to determine the public's perception of the discourse on the division of Jorong in Nagari Manggopoh. This research uses a descriptive quantitative method. Respondents came from the Nagari Manggopoh community a research data collection using questionnaires and field observations. Data were analyzed using technique analysis percentage descriptive. The study results show that people's perceptions of the quality of public services in Nagari Manggopoh showed very good and good, reaching 88%. Meanwhile, the community's perception of the village management discourse (Jorong Splitting) in Nagari Manggopoh shows a very high percentage, reaching 93%. This study concluded that public services provided by Nagari Manggopoh occupy an excellent interval value. Meanwhile, the discourse on village arrangement (addition of Jorong) received enthusiastic support from the Nagari Manggopoh Community.

Human Intelligence and Value of Machine Advancements in Cognitive Science A Design thinking Approach

Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) is an approach used for expressing and extracting textual meanings using statistical evaluations or modeling applied to vast corpora of text, and its development has been a major motivation for this study to understand the design thinking approach. We introduced LSA and gave some instances of how it might be used to further our knowledge of cognition and to develop practical technology. Since LSA's inception, other alternative statistical models for meaning detection and analysis in text corpora have been created, tested, and refined. This study demonstrates the value that statistical models of semantics provide to the study of cognitive science and the development of cognition. These models are particularly useful because they enable researchers to study a wide range of problems pertaining to knowledge, discourse perception, text cognition, and language using expansive representations of human intelligence.

Systemic Properties of Judgmental Discourse

The article is devoted to an acute and insufficiently studied issue—the issue of judgmental discourse. While the business language is considered clichéd and neutral, the cases of direct expression of attitude are attracting more attention nowadays. The article attempts to find out what functions judgmental discourse in general performs, as well as what the role and the functional load of a positive assessment is.
 
 The material for the study covers excerpts from the business press with examples of positive assessment. The study was carried out using methods of analysis and synthesis, classification, functional-synergetic analysis served as a private scientific method.
 
 The article shows that the perception of discourse is a complex phenomenon, subject to the laws of cognition. A language built linearly acquires multidimensional shades of meaning, being actualised in discourse. Consideration of discourse as a synergistic system of meanings highlights properties uncharacteristic for a linear system. For example, the communicative goal can be achieved through undertaking unexpected speech turns, and the use of implications can increase the rhetorical efficiency of an utterance. 
 
 The author analyses the three most common speech tactics used in judgmental discourse—praise, compliment/flattery, self-identification—and on their material describes synergistic properties—systemacy, openness, self-organisation, non-linearity and heterogeneity of the semantic system of discourse.
 
 The study has shown that a positive assessment in the structure of judgmental discourse is widespread and is realised at various levels of the discourse system. In publicistic business discourse, judgment is used not just to express an attitude; it is a tool for forming an opinion, creating a certain image, expressing the position of a printed medium.

Necessity of Ordinance for Discourse Criticism and Perception of Low Fertility Problem

본 연구는 한국사회의 저출산이 대한민국의 명운을 좌우하는 가장 큰 구조적 위험 중 하나로써 절체절명의 과제라는 관점에서 시작되었다. 저출산이 사회문제로 되기 위해서는 진행과정에서 전혀 주목하지 않았던 사회적 현상을 정부의 공공문제로서 저출산정책 담론을 재인식하는 것이 필요하다. 이러한 저출산이라는 담론은 언어생활구조의 산물로 작용하여 인간의 의식이 되고, 나아가 우리의 의견이나 사상을 지배, 형성하게 함으로써 더 중요한 문제로 사회현상에 긴밀한 영향을 미치게 된다. 한국의 사회문제인 출산은 사회전반의 인식전환을 위한 담론으로서 저출산에 대한 기존의 견고한 통념들을 약화시키는 가장 실질적인 대안 중의 하나로 지방자치입법인 조례를 통하여 사회문제 인식 전환이 필요하다. 이에 따라 저출산이라는 담론구조에 주목하고, 정책을 담론에서부터 보는 관점에서 지방자치 조례를 통한 저출산 담론의 인식전환에 접근하고자 한다. 사회제도의 정책 영역에서 출산은 국가의 가장 근본이 되는 자원의 관점과 사회의 효율적 경제성장의 관점에서도 출산정책 담론의 인식변화가 절실하다. 각 지방자치단체는 지역특성에 알맞은 문화와 연계된 자녀출산 조례를 통하여 출산이 의미하는 담론으로 사적인 사랑보다 아이의 출산을 통해 열려진 새로운 세계인 공적이고 사회적인 영역으로 눈을 돌린다는 의미로 사회인식 변화가 조례제정을 통해 확산할 필요성이 있다. 출산에 대한 담론의 인식전환이 절실히 요구되며, 이를 위해서는 ‘출산 재개념화’에 대한 담론이 지방자치 조례제정에서 그 시작이 될 수 있을 것이다.This study began in the sense that the low birth rate of Korean society is one of the biggest structural risks that influence the Korean destiny. In order for low births to become a social issue, it is necessary to re-recognize the discourse on low birth policy as a public issue of the government, a social phenomenon that did not pay any attention in the process. This discourse of low birth rate acts as a product of the linguistic life structure to become a human consciousness, and further more importantly, by dominating and shaping our opinions and ideas, it has a close influence on social phenomena. As a discourse for the change of perception of society as a social problem, childbirth is one of the most practical alternatives to weakening the existing solid myths about low birth rates, and it is necessary to change the perception of social issues through the local government legislation ordinance. Accordingly, we want to draw attention to the structure of the discourse of low birth rate and approach the shift in perception of low-birth discourse through local autonomy ordinance from the point of view of policy from the discourse. In the policy area of the social institutions, childbirth is also urgently changing the perception of the maternity policy discourse in terms of the viewpoint of the country s most fundamental resources and the efficient economic growth of society. There is a need for social change to spread through the ordinance, meaning that the new world, public and social, which is opened through the birth of a child rather than private love, is a discourse that is meant to be a discourse of childbirth through the child birth ordinance, which is associated with a culture appropriate to local characteristics. There is a desperate need for a shift in the perception of discourse on childbirth, and for this purpose, the discourse on reconception of childbirth could be the beginning of the enactment of local autonomy ordinances.

Когнітивно-дискурсивний підхід у лінгвометодиці вищої школи

The article touches upon the problem of using cognitive and discourse approach in the process of teaching courses in linguistics, particularly Modern Ukrainian Language, for futureteachers of Ukrainian Language and literature. Cognitive and discourse direction in linguistics is aimed at determining the ways of representing the human mental world in language, studying the language as a universal means of reality conceptualization, forming communicative competence of the speaker and the addressee. At the moment, linguistics actively operates with the newest terms and categories, uses specific methods to research language material. According to the requirements of a school pedagogy of language, while studying the normative or special courses philology students have to master the following terms, categories and methods of research: discourse, speech event, situation of speech, speech act, speech tactics, production, functioning, perception of discourse, discourse typology, concept, conceptual analysis, conceptual and linguistic pictures of the world and so on. The principles and means of implementing cognitive and discourse approach into the process of training future Ukrainian Language and literature teachers’ cognitive and discourse knowledge and skills are defined in the article. Among them there is the principle of scientificknowledge, integration of knowledge from different philological and non-philological courses (students’ understanding the interrelation of speech and thinking, language and society, language and the process of communication), the principle of text centrism in studying linguistic material, the principles of consistency and professional sufficiency. According to the mentioned principles, the author of the article proposes the modified system of exercises that covers both traditional and cognitive and discourse tasks. These tasks include the definition of linguistic parameters of discourse, the reproduction of a certain fragment of the conceptual picture of the world in it, the display of the specificity of reflecting the certain category in the national language picture of the world, determination and understanding the interrelation of linguistic means with extralinguistic aspects of communication.

Exploring intersubjectivity between student teachers and field instructors in student teaching conferences

AbstractStudent teachers are learners of teaching and emerging collaborative practitioners preparing to join school-based professional learning communities. Using situative learning theory, this 16-week multiple-case study explored whether necessary conditions were satisfied within field instructor-led conferences towards the goal of helping student teachers learn how to develop roles as participatory contributors. Systematically shared meanings of conference discourse and similar perceptions of control regarding topic selection were explored as indicators of successful conferencing. Findings show that even though field instructors aimed to engage student teachers in mutually understood conversations and share control of topic selection; these objectives were not fully achieved. The Case of the Hebrew Press

Following the scientific revolution, the modern perception of discourse assumed that text can and should reflect, in a literal way, objective reality as observed in the real world. This perception is radically different from a traditional religious perception of discourse in general and from the Jewish perception in particular. The Jewish traditional perception was based upon intertextual (and not empirical) models of inquiry and endeavored to uncover concealed levels within texts through analytical-philological methods. It is argued that the revival of Hebrew as a secular language went hand in hand with the adoption of the modern perception of discourse. This adoption involved a change in the relationship between text, knowledge, and reality within Jewish society, which found explicit expression in the Hebrew journals established in the middle of the 19th century.

Discourses of separation: The relation between rhetoric and poetics in the work of Hoyt Hudson and Herbert Wichelns

In his 1925 article Literary Criticism of Oratory, Herbert Wichelns, a scholar of rhetoric at Cornell, observed that, with respect to literary study, oratory had become either an outcast or a poor (181). Oratory's falling out of favor indicated to Wichelns that perceptions of discourse had been radically transformed. Intimating what the change might consist of, he wrote, [i]nvolved in it is some shift in the conception of oratory or of literature, or of both; nor can these conceptions have changed except in response to the of which oratory, as well as literature, is part (181). Scholars writing after Wichelns have frequently reported on the ill fate of oratory-and, more broadly, of rhetoric as the practice and study of some kinds of written as well as oral discourse-in American colleges. How had colleges by 1925 come to demote rhetoric to a position beneath literary critical study and literary works of fiction, drama, and poetry? As Wichelns suggested, rhetoric and literature shared some life, and our elaboration of their common history and context can help us account for rhetoric's condition. Some scholars have argued that the study and status of rhetoric in the college curriculum diminished as a strong interest in literature emerged (e.g., Stewart 119-21; Connors, Ede, and Lunsford 5-7; Halloran 176). Exploring the role of the belletristic tradition in rhetoric and of representative individuals such as C. S. Baldwin and the men who held the position of Boylston Professor of Rhetoric at Harvard, the work of these scholars offers insight into the interrelations among rhetoric and literature during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Historians neither of English nor of speech as academic disciplines, however, have traced the relation between rhetoric and literature as it was construed by scholars who were active during this time. The concomitant rise of literary study and fall of rhetoric suggest that historical perceptions of the relation between literary and rhetorical discourse figure in the story of rhetoric's demise. Part of what we might call the life of rhetoric and of literature is the relation that members of the profession perceived between them. As with contemporary discussions on the issue in such texts as Jane Tompkins' Reader in History and Steven Mailloux's Rhetorical Power, we might guess that turn-of-the-century scholars posited rela-
