THE FUNCTION OF LITERACY IN A NURSING HOME CONTEXT

This qualitative study examined the literacy use of 28 older adult nursing home residents in relation to life experiences and perceptions of retirement and aging. Emerging themes focused on continuity and change between present literacy usage and that of earlier life stages, perceptions of the purpose of literacy held by older adults, the role of need in motivating older adults to use literacy skills, and contextual support for their use. An understanding of functional literacy among those interviewed could be based on their level of skill or comprehension, physical ability, perceived need, and prior experience.

Attitudes toward pre‐retirement counselling: A path model

AbstractIn structured interviews with 250 older male workers, respondents were asked whether they wished to participate in a proposed pre‐retirement counselling programme. The effect of six independent variables on the workers' Attitude toward Pre‐Retirement Counselling (dependent variable) was examined by means of a path analysis. Intention to Continue Working after Retirement had a significant negative effect on the dependent variable, indicating that a strong work orientation interfered with receptiveness to pre‐retirement counselling. An unexpected relationship was observed between a favourable perception of retirement and the intention to continue working. This finding emphasized the dominance of the work orientation and workers' lack of awareness of alternative social roles. Implications for retirement planning programmes were discussed.

AGING IN SWEDEN, PART 1: RETIREMENT PLANNING

This article explores the relationship between retirement planning and various demographic and attitudinal factors in a random sample of 603 participants aged 60‐75. About one‐third reported having planned for retirement, and multiple regression analyses performed separately among preretirees and retirees indicate that planning is more common among males and high status individuals. “Planners” in general tend also to have more favorable attitudes toward retirees. Planning among preretirees appears to be most closely associated with positive perceptions of retirement, and planning among retirees is associated with work orientations compatible with retirement.
