Harm from the drinking of people you know: A range of effects from different relationships.

To describe the range of effects experienced due to the drinking of people respondents know and analyze risk and protective factors for harm from the drinking of partners and household members, other relatives and friends and co-workers. Surveys of 2574 participants' experiences were obtained from two samples: 1000 people responded to random digitally dialled Australian mobile calls and 1574 participants responded from the Life in AustraliaTMpanel survey. Respondents were asked whether they had been negatively affected in the previous 12 months by the drinking of persons they knew who were 'a heavy drinker or drank a lot sometimes' and the nature of these harms. Weighted logistic regressions were used to analyze differences in rates of key negative outcomes from known others' drinking by gender, age and socio-economic status. Almost two thirds [60.2%; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 57.7%-62.7%] of participants reported having heavy drinkers in their lives and 21.8% (95% CI = 19.8%-23.9%) reported being negatively affected by the drinking of people they knew well in some way. Participants reported a gamut of effects, including, most commonly, adverse social effects: having to transport relatives and friends who had been drinking, role failure and faults, being emotionally hurt or neglected, serious arguments, family problems, having to care for drinkers and verbal abuse. Less commonly, respondents reported physical or sexual harm, property damage, financial stress and threats from others' drinking. Women (odds ratio = 1.49; 95% CI = 1.13-1.95), younger people, rural, Australian-born (vs. respondents born overseas in non-English speaking countries) and more frequent drinkers were more likely to report harm from a drinker they knew than their counterparts after adjusting for other variables in the model. Australians appear to be commonly adversely affected by the drinking of people they know. Harms from known drinkers are more likely to be experienced by women than men, particularly from the people they live with and other relatives.

The unprecedented rapid re-deployment of healthcare workers from different care pathways into newly created and fluid COVID-19 teams provides a unique opportunity to examine the interaction of many of the established non-technical factors for successful delivery of clinical care and teamwork in healthcare settings. This research paper therefore aims to address these gaps by qualitatively exploring the impact of COVID work throughout the pandemic on permanent and deployed personnel's experiences, their ability to effectively work together, and the effect of social dynamics (e.g., cohesion, social support) on teamwork and mental health. Seventy-five interviews were conducted across the UK between March and December 2021 during wave 2 and 3 of COVID-19 with 75 healthcare workers who were either permanent staff on Intensive Care/High Dependency Units used as COVID wards, had been rapidly deployed to such a ward, or had managed such wards. Work Life Balance was measured using the WLB Scale. Interview transcripts were qualitatively coded and thematic codes were compared using network graph modeling. Using thematic network analysis, four overarching thematic clusters were found, (1) teamwork, (2) organizational support and management, (3) cohesion and social support, and (4) psychological strain. The study has three main findings. First, the importance of social factors for teamwork and mental health, whereby team identity may influence perceptions of preparedness, collaboration and communication, and impact on the collective appraisal of stressful events and work stressors. Secondly, it demonstrates the positive and negative impact of professional roles and skills on the development of teamwork and team identity. Lastly the study identifies the more pronounced negative impact of COVID work on deployed personnel's workload, mental health, and career intentions, exacerbated by reduced levels of social support during, and after, their deployment. The thematic network analysis was able to highlight that many of the traditional factors associated with the successful delivery of patient care were impeded by pandemic constraints, markedly influencing personnel's ability to work together and cope with pandemic work stressors. In this environment teamwork, delivery of care and staff well-being appear to depend on relational and organizational context, social group membership, and psycho-social skills related to managing team identity. While results hold lessons for personnel selection, training, co-location, and organizational support during and after a pandemic, further research is needed into the differential impact of pandemic deployment on HCWs mental health and teamwork.

Qualitative expert evaluation of an educational intervention outline aimed at developing a shared understanding of cross-border healthcare.

Although cross-border healthcare benefits many patients and healthcare professionals, it also poses challenges. To develop a shared understanding of these opportunities and challenges among healthcare professionals, we designed an educational intervention outline and invited experts in healthcare and education to evaluate it. The proposed intervention was based on theoretical principles of authentic, team, and reflective learning. Experts (N=11) received a paper outline of the intervention, which was subsequently discussed in individual, semi-structured interviews. Based on a thematic analysis of the interviews, we identified 4 themes: 1) using the experience you have, 2) learning with the people you work with, 3) taking the time to reflect on the past and future, and 4) adapting the intervention to its context. According to the experts, the proposed intervention and its three underlying principles can enhance a shared understanding of cross-border healthcare. To unlock its full potential, however, they suggested adjusting the application of learning principles to its specific context. By situating learning in landscapes of practice, the intervention could contribute to the continuous development of cross-border healthcare.

Voice Recognition in the era of Virtual Reality: Disruption of Normative Social Meaning Making

The teaching and working world has been disrupted by developments known as the 4th Industrial Revolution. As we grappled with the Covid-19 epidemic the world saw massive disruptions in how and where we work, teach, learn and socialize. As moves to continue the social via virtual platforms increased as a result of Covid-19 restrictions we saw disruptions in everyday social meaning making. This article via reflections from personal observation and conversations with colleagues engages with the idea of voice recognition as an important social cue in virtual interactions. The article shows how taken for granted social markers of engagement can be rendered useless in context were the only connector to the people you are interacting with is their voice. The article challenges us to engage with the following questions: What impacts does the move to virtuality have on social engagements that allow us to humanize each other? What can we do to maintain the important social cues important for meaning making in context of teaching, counseling, consultation as we see many of these roles move to the virtual space?

Product quality, perceived value on consumer loyalty in choosing a coffee shop in Langsa City. The research method used in this study was the sampling method carried out by the Accidental Sampling method, namely determining the sample based on the people you met. by chance or anyone who is consuming coffee in a coffee shop. In this study, the number of samples determined by the researcher was 35 respondents. The data collection method uses interview techniques and the instrument used is a questionnaire. The instrument has met the validity requirements with a reliability coefficient (Crombach's Alpha) of 0.571, 0.638, 0.433 and 0.652 respectively for Determination is used to measure how far the variable ability of customer satisfaction is product quality, perceived value and loyalty variables. Data analysis was carried out using qualitative methods and quantitative methods with the formulas namely Regression Analysis, T-test, F-test and Coefficient of Determination Test (R2) with the help of SPSS 16 software for windows. The results showed that the variable customer satisfaction t-count < t-table (0.514 < 1.697) so that it can be concluded that the variable customer satisfaction has no significant effect on customer loyalty. product quality variable t-count > t-table (6.28 > 1.697) so that it can be concluded that product quality variables have a significant effect on consumer loyalty. perceived value variable t-count <t-table (0.255 <1.697) so it can be concluded that perceived value variable has no significant effect on consumer loyalty.

Designing for people you can’t meet: Persuasive design to nurture seniors’ participation in community services during the COVID-19 pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, seniors were required to strictly isolate themselves, as the disease affects them disproportionately. Simultaneously, seniors had particular difficulty adjusting to the new reality because they had little experience using digital technologies. This paper presents a service design project implemented to alleviate the social isolation in senior homes during the pandemic. The team utilized a persuasive design strategy to create a six-step service design process with three cycles to nurture the participation of senior residents and facilitate coproduction. The outcome included technology education, communication channels, art events, and tools to support staff in continuing to coproduce the services.

Developing a nomogram for predicting depression in diabetic patients after COVID-19 using machine learning.

This study identified major risk factors for depression in community diabetic patients using machine learning techniques and developed predictive models for predicting the high-risk group for depression in diabetic patients based on multiple risk factors. This study analyzed 26,829 adults living in the community who were diagnosed with diabetes by a doctor. The prevalence of a depressive disorder was the dependent variable in this study. This study developed a model for predicting diabetic depression using multiple logistic regression, which corrected all confounding factors in order to identify the relationship (influence) of predictive factors for diabetic depression by entering the top nine variables with high importance, which were identified in CatBoost. The prevalence of depression was 22.4% (n = 6,001). This study calculated the importance of factors related to depression in diabetic patients living in South Korean community using CatBoost to find that the top nine variables with high importance were gender, smoking status, changes in drinking before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in smoking before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, subjective health, concern about economic loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic, changes in sleeping hours due to the COVID-19 pandemic, economic activity, and the number of people you can ask for help in a disaster situation such as COVID-19 infection. It is necessary to identify the high-risk group for diabetes and depression at an early stage, while considering multiple risk factors, and to seek a personalized psychological support system at the primary medical level, which can improve their mental health.

_ People who are passionate about running businesses often talk about money or people—but not both. Imagine, a chief operating officer at an oil company who doesn’t listen to any ideas that won’t result in more barrels or more money, right now. Many of us in the oil and gas industry know what it feels like to work in that organization. Or the human resources leader that puts together an offsite meeting with personality tests, teambuilding exercises, and some “feel-good” work that has nothing to do with the actual work of the company. Both examples have their place and their value, but they never work well together. It’s one or the other. This is because of a widespread belief that what is right for a business and what is right for the people that work within one are inherently in conflict with each other. At best, people view them as opposing forces to balance. At worst, they’re seen as incompatible ideas and there’s no town big enough for the both of them. I call nonsense. What’s Good for People? Elimination of Frustration Whether it’s the fabled “TPS Reports,” jammed printers, or (multiple) inept bosses, we all have things at work that make our days worse. Some of them are minor annoyances like an extra copy/paste step, but many of them cause damage to our focus, ability to make decisions, and overall efficacy at our jobs. What is one of the worst? Poor communication. Usually, small teams are not too bad at communication. But cross-department collaboration (or the lack thereof) is almost always an area where companies of all sizes can find room for improvement. Everyone knows that process problems cause wasted time and resources. But many people underestimate the real cost—the missed upside. The Reconnection Process: Mobilizing the Social Capital of Dormant Ties

Prior research has identified the value of reconnecting dormant ties (i.e., people you used to know), allowing individuals to refresh relationships and mobilize the value inherent in a tie (i.e., its social capital). However, less well understood is how this reconnection process occurs, including how it can be done well or poorly. To address this lack of knowledge, we conducted multi-organizational research combining an inductive, qualitative field study of professional reconnections by individuals in the North Italian textile district (Study 1) and, to validate our findings, a vignette-based experiment with U.S. workers (Study 2). We find that the process of reconnecting dormant ties can and does fail, sometimes dramatically, when people do not refresh the tie and, as a result, do not trust where they stand with each other. Specifically, we find that three elements—remembering, catching up, and perceiving the tie similarly—are key to successfully mobilizing the value of a dormant tie.

The relevance of the article. Charitable activities play an important role in the formation of value guidelines and moral norms of an individual and society as a whole. Its development is determined by various factors that occur in society. The start of active hostilities in Ukraine in 2022 affected all spheres of human existence. Among them, there were changes in the functioning and development strategies of charity events, in particular events. This issue needs clarification, because it will allow not only to understand the strategies of adaptation of this form of charity, but also to predict further ways of its transformation. That is why scientific, including socio-cultural analysis of the phenomenon of charity event is extremely relevant.&#x0D; The purpose of the article. To analyze charitable events in the socio-cultural space in the conditions of a full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war; to reveal the cultural, artistic, financial and technical factors affecting the organization and holding of events.&#x0D; The methodology. A cultural approach to the analysis of the mentioned problem demonstrates that the concept of charity belongs to certain historically developed and regulated norms of social actions that implement their worldview orientations and cultural values. The specifics of scientific intelligence led to the use of the structural-functional method, which made it possible to investigate specific functional characteristics and regularities. The method of content analysis and personal practical experience of holding events made it possible to determine the artistic features of conducting charity events, the method of terminological analysis helped to find out that the Polonism “impreza” successfully filled a gap in the lexical system of the Ukrainian language.&#x0D; The results. We believe that charity is one of the “material” factors of the spiritual culture of mankind. This phenomenon arose spontaneously at the beginning of human civilization. Subsequently, it developed as targeted attention and concrete help from society to people who are unable to independently solve the issue of personal livelihood due to a number of reasons (subjective or objective). If we trace the genesis of charity, it is possible to distinguish three main historical types that are peculiar to the Western European mentality: ancient, Christian and modern charity. It was revealed that today the prevalence of charity in Ukraine is rated as “high”. It has been found out that in terms of its artistic structure, the charity event has all the features inherent in such forms of stage art as collective concert, thematic spectacle, solo concert. However, when forming the concept of a charity event, the organizers should naturally and organically integrate an auction, exhibition, fair or active online donation into the structure of the event. An important factor in organizing a charity event is attracting external help and finding people you can rely on and who will show a genuine interest in this cause. Involvement in a charity project must be voluntary, following the “calling of the heart”. It can be assumed that true humanism is achieved exclusively in the conditions of practical realization of the essence of a person through his actions.&#x0D; The scientific novelty. The time of military aggression was systematized, the place and role of domestic artists in the charitable sphere was established. Sociocultural functions of the phenomenon of charity events in Ukraine were generalized.&#x0D; The practical significance. The data of this study reveal various types and forms of charity events as effective factors in fundraising. The materials of the article can be used for the practical organization of a charity project and the theoretical features of the organization of charity art projects studied by film director students.&#x0D; Conclusions. Charitable activity is a determining point of reference in the formation of moral and ethical values and humanistic relations in society. Thanks to the holding of charity events, a number of psychological, social and political issues are resolved, in particular, the formation of national identity, which is an integral factor of Ukraine’s national security. At the international level, artistic charity events primarily carry out “cultural diplomacy” with the aim of conveying the truth about Ukraine and the war in Ukraine, and more broadly — explaining and understanding what Ukraine and its culture actually are, what is its self-sufficiency and diversity, how this energy was manifested at different historical stages despite mostly unfavorable socio-political contexts.

In her New York Times essay on self-censorship in the college classroom, Camp (2022), a University of Virginia senior at the time of writing, expresses frustration at a campus environment that seems to encourage students to withhold or conform their views under fear of social pressure. As part of a conversation about deliberation, I shared her essay with my political psychology class, who understood her frustration but also recognized the ways in which college campuses—and our small, liberal arts environment in particular—create more tightly networked groups of individuals than we experience almost anywhere else in our adult lives. In college, the people in your class are also the people you eat lunch with, go to parties with, and pursue romantic relationships with. The political discussion you have in class, while purely academic in theory, has the potential to affect your social life in ways that would lead most reasonable persons to pause before sharing a controversial take on current events.
