Braking system redundancy requirements for moving walks

The reliability of the braking system of moving walks plays a major role in the safe exploitation of these people movers. According to the requirements of the new standard ISO 22201-2, the reliability of a braking system of a moving walk has to correspond to safety integrity levels SIL1 till SIL3. In order to determine the required safety integrity level, a reliability analysis of a braking system has been performed using a probabilistic method and the Weibull distribution model. This paper presents the results of this reliability analysis and shows the necessity of redundancy of the braking system of public service moving walks. The results for the proposed redundant design show a higher reliability level and less reliability degradation in time than compared to braking system designs without redundancy. Based on these results and using a probabilistic and diagnostics approach, a suggestion for an intelligent system for preventing failure in a braking system is presented in this paper. This system maintains a required safety level of the braking system of a moving walk and predicts possible failures of the braking system.

Dynamic Model of a Pneumatic Automatic People Mover (Aeromovel System)

This paper presents a new mathematical model for the Aeromovel transport system, which is a non-conventional Automated People Mover (APM) based on pneumatics. The vehicle runs over rails installed on an elevated guide, being propelled by air that is pressurised by means of an external power source (a blower) installed on the ground. The proposed lumped-parameter model is intended as an auxiliary tool for the development of this technology, especially in what concerns its trajectory control algorithms. The dynamics of the pressures in the chambers of the actuation pipe are modelled with basis on energy and continuity assumptions, and important phenomena, such as air compressibility, leakages, and steady-state head losses, are taken into account. The model is validated by the comparison between results of simulations and direct measurements performed in a real-scale prototype constructed in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Sustainable transport systems: trends on needs, constraints, solutions

In this historical moment, technology can guarantee transport systems some good solutions which seems to be quite in line with actual needs, by improving efficiency of engines (ICEs) or of travels or even rationalizing the consumption of related activities by using ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) and by developing systems which can be sustainable through their whole life-cycle (LCC). Main results of the paper can be synthesised in pursuing the independence from the main source transport systems are based on, which is a nearly-monopoly, and use of lower unitary energy in motorised mobility in order to reduce the fuel consumption per person or per ton and - consequently - the emissions. This aim can be pursued either through higher capacity transport modes (e.g. trains, metros and automated people movers), yet guaranteeing as far as possible vehicles loaded more than their break-even in energy, or with a low level of black-oil energy used for vehicles: e.g., FEV, PHEV, natural gas for heavy-duty vehicles. The WTW analysis synthesises most of this idea.

The present paper summarizes the story of the birth and grows of Aeromovel, which is an environmentally friendly urban transport system. The system of Aeromovel was conceived in the mid 1970's. The system consists of vehicles travelling on an elevated guideway. The main difference between Aeromovel and the more conventional automated people movers or monorails resides on its pneumatic propulsion. A high-speed airflow, generated by stationary units located along convenient intervals, acts on the blocking surface of propulsion plates rigidly connected to the vehicles. The speed of the vehicles is determined by air pressure differential which is controlled by means of valves located at generator units and along the guideway. Aeromovel has been successfully used in Indonesia and Brazil.

Highlights of the design and construction of a 12 km elevated APM bridge project in Saudi Arabia

AbstractThe automated people mover (APM) bridge project constructed at Princess Nora University (PNU) in Saudi Arabia and inaugurated in May 2012 is a major project with many challenges in design and construction due to its strict time‐frame compared with the big scale of the project. Therefore, the design had to be such that it ensured simplicity, time‐savings, lowest costs, aesthetics and the high quality required for bridge project elements. For aesthetic reasons, a box section was chosen for all the APM bridge sections for the bridge project, including straight, bifurcation and curved parts. This paper highlights the efficiency of the precast concrete techniques used in the design and construction of big projects such as this elevated APM bridge project at PNU in Saudi Arabia.

Managing a Sustainable Transportation System: Exploring a Community’s Attitude, Perception, and Behavior of the Morgantown Public Rapid Transit (PRT)

Automated transportation is an innovative and sustainable concept that works emission-free with fully-automatedand driverless vehicles on a network of specially-built, elevated guide ways. These systems are also calledAutomated People Mover (APM) or Public Rapid Transit (PRT) and are considered to be a solution to many globaland environmental problems related to the use of the automobile. These transportation systems claim to be clean,affordable and safe technology, and a smart urban planning solution to move away from America’s dependence onforeign oil, the faltering auto industry, and the misuse of urban landscapes. One of the first APM systems has beenoperating since the 1970’s at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. In order to examinecommunity’s attitude, perception and individual characteristic that influence the use of the systems, a randomintercept survey was conducted. Findings from correlation analysis and an ordered probit model suggestsocio-demographic attributes associated with attitudes toward the system. The frequent users are characterized ashaving a higher level of educational attainment, and are primarily students. Findings explore underlying factorsregarding commuting, crucial for transportation policies and practices for managing sustainable transportationsystems in comparable urban settings.

Funding Major Airport Ground Access Projects

Funding projects to improve the intermodal connectivity between the surface transportation system and airports is often complicated by the need to draw on a range of funding programs and sources, each with its own project eligibility requirements and regulations. This paper presents seven case studies of the funding sources used for a range of major intermodal airport ground access projects in the United States that were completed in the past 12 years or were under construction. The case studies were undertaken as part of a recently completed research study that investigated collaborative funding strategies to facilitate airport ground access. The projects included a major intermodal center, two automated people mover links between airports and nearby rail stations, two airport access highway projects, and two extensions of rail transit systems to airports. The funding sources for the seven projects varied widely with the nature and location of the project. All seven projects involved some collaboration between local, state, and federal agencies in developing the funding plan for each project, although the number of agencies involved varied, with the larger projects generally having more agencies involved in providing funding. This experience suggests that developing a funding plan for such projects requires the involvement of a broad range of stakeholder agencies in planning and implementing the project.

Considerations for the design of doubly unsymmetrical precast pretensioned beams used for box girder construction

AbstractMany box girder bridges are constructed with doubly unsymmetrical precast beam units. The aim of this paper is to present special considerations for the optimum arrangement of pretensioned strands in a simply supported precast pretensioned beam with a doubly unsymmetrical section. The goal of the optimum arrangement is to minimize the distortion (lateral sway phenomenon) caused by the doubly unsymmetrical characteristic of the beam section at transfer. The study shows that the distortion of the unsymmetrical section is minimized when the resultant stresses at transfer are constant over all of the top flange and over all of the bottom flange of the precast beam for most of the sections within the beam length. In this case, the neutral axes of these sections will be horizontal with respect to the beam section. This approach is verified with the help of two different finite element models. In the first model, the beam is modelled as one‐dimensional space frame elements; in the second model, the beam is modelled using three‐dimensional solid elements. A practical example of a box girder bridge made from doubly unsymmetrical precast pretensioned beams in the APM (Automated People Mover) elevated bridge project in Saudi Arabia is also presented.

Three-dimensional system dynamics simulation of rope-propelled automated people movers

The objective of this study is to develop a three-dimensional multibody system (MBS) for the dynamic simulation of rope-propelled automated people movers (RAPM). These public transport systems include guided vehicles which operate in a fully automated mode on a separate guideway. In design stage of an RAPM the optimisation of ride comfort and durability is aspired. Therefore, an elastic rope model has been implemented in a state-of-the-art MBS software. The coupling of the rope model with standard MBS elements allows for the integrated simulation of these transport systems which will enhance the prediction quality of the overall system dynamics.

Independent Safety Assessment - Benefits and Methodology

To date, the railway application standards EN 50126 ff series - being transferred to international IEC level - have reached a mature state and are implemented in practically every new rail technology project. These standards do not only apply to heavy rail systems - as their heading ‘Railway applications’ may imply, but also to light rail and urban mass transportation including metro and people mover systems. The standard 50126 requires a “Safety Plan”, covering – beyond others – planning for Independent Safety Assessment.The Independent Safety Assessor's role is to verify, that the required level of safety and quality is achieved by all actors concerned to ensure a safe implementation of the project to the required safety standards. It is the goal of an Independent Safety Assessment to put the Safety Authority into a position to grant the allowance for operations (licensing) after the finalisation of all necessary evaluations, examinations, analyses, inspections, tests, etc. The license can be issued for single modes or sub-modes of operation.Independent Safety Assessment is to the clear benefit of all parties involved. Manufacturers and System Suppliers can take credit of the third party opinion on their supply and of the application of cross-acceptance (with the re-use of assessor generic product/generic application certificates), Operators are given increased confidence independent from potential supplier constraints and the responsible Safety Authorities can limit their resources and activities to the legal responsibility.A description of proven assessment processes and methodologies and selected examples of complex railway systems – including driverless operation and new technologies – underline these benefits.

On Solid Footing

The first phase of construction of the PHX Sky Train, a 5 mi long automated people mover to be located at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, included the design and construction of more than 230 drilled shafts to support three stations and roughly 9,000 ft of elevated guideway. The design had to account for high axial loads, lateral loads, and moments, as well as difficult ground conditions.

Accessibility and mobility have an important role in urban and regional development strategies, in a particular way for the touristic uses of territories. Transport infrastructures constitute in fact necessary elements for the use of urban areas, but assume an extra function related to the valorization of the territory. Furthermore structures for mobility are a component of the touristic supply system especially the rope transport structures that offer dynamic and unique point of views. Cable ways in urban area have this characteristic more than other rope transport systems. Starting from this assume, the article describes four projects developed in the last years in Campania Region and a transport system carry out in Perugia. The five study cases demonstrate how an increasing attention rope transport technology is diffusing in different contest especially for tourism uses. The first case is the Giffoni Valle Piana inclined lift that should connect the city centre in the valley with the medieval Castle. This project is strictly related to a general touristic strategy of the whole municipality. The second project regards the Ravello-Minori cable way and the objective to offer a sustainable alternative to the private car for travelling around two of the most beautiful areas in the Amalfi coast. The third project is located in the centre of the city of Naples and regards a cable way for the connection between the principal museums of the metropolitan area: the National and the Capodimonte museums. The new infrastructure is well integrated in the multimodal transport network and will offer spectacular visuals for tourists and residents. The Perugia Minimetro is the fourth study case and constitute an example of good integration between sustainable transport and urban planning development. The last project is the Fisciano people mover that has the aim of connecting two university campus with the interchange station of the National rail network. The description of the study cases give a general idea of the contest where the transport infrastructure is located, the general objective of the project and some information of the different technology used. In this way the general description of the cases can offer interesting remaks for students and professionals. Finally the article propose a comparison between the different transport technology, giving some construction data that have been synthesized in a table. In all the study cases emerge the importance of designing the new infrastructure not only for touristic uses, but also for systematic mobility. It is necessary in fact a strong integration of the new rope systems with the existing monility supply system.
